basically goes like this... I want to make my own strut brace.. or more so get one made up by this metal fabricator lad that I will gettin a few things done by soon...

what I need though.. is an actual/true size template I can give to him so he can make up the rings/plates that bolt to the struts.

If anyone could help me out with this as I dont know how the f*** to go about it.. it would be most appreciated...

Ive made a simple image up of what I mean... it just needs to be an actual size version with correct measurements/dimensions and bolt holes.

would be stoked if someone knows how to do this and can create an accurate template for me.

many thanks in advance...

My brother and I made one up for a demo....

its fully stainless steel, and adjustable.....

The templates for the top of the struts were just cut from cardboard, marked onto the stainless steel plate, and then jet to a metal place to get cut.

All the stainless steel parts were sourced from trailer and boating stores.

Fairly easy really..... http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I dont want to buy one man... trying to save as much cash as possible. plus I want to make a really chunk one up. Im making as much stuff from scrath as possible, I like the idea of designin my own parts and saving money.

I just thought to myself last night that I should just ask my mate to trace the plates up from his strut brace... 2 easy really.

if anyone else wants to go to the small effort of tracing both left and right plates up n scannin them for me that would be sweet.

if u seriously think u will save money making it yourself i will be VERY VERY surprised - the alloy alone will be 30 or 40....then the tools...plus the time

and if you are doing things on a real budget i wouldnt even get a strut brace

I can get the materials and labour for nothing.. hence the reason I wana make my own man...

take the nuts off, put a peice of paper over top and carefully push the studs through the paper and press it down hard then trace it.
that should work.
or get a piece of cardboard and do the same.

mattyshop did it once on mine so we could get some camber tops made.

hmm I could see this workin if it was a flat surface.. but where the inside ring goes it has a lil lip.. if not I would have done this already. . . Im looking for something a lil more precise...

c'mon.. its not that big an ask is it..

1st December 2005, 09:26 PM
hmm i see
i could trace one but i dont have a scanner
and i dont think it would scan up as real size on a computer.

DRFT - 86

measure it off your car, i did it, punched them out and they fitted, then scrapped the idea cause premade ones are easier and fuckin cheap these days. Time wise ur just better off buy one.

seriously ahy... if you have a brace lying round thats not installed yet, or your feeling really helpful take it off if it is installed.... a piece of paper and 5 meesly minutes of ur time, trace up the mounting plates and scan em up ......... 2 easy.

the rear brace is a piece of piss man.. make 2 end plates for the bolts to go through then measure the length required... I will be making one of these also when I do the front one....

I still cant see how hard it is to get some cardboard and trace the top of the strut tower, I would do it but its not on my to do list for this week.
Already done an engine changeover and other various things.

Good luck with it though.

Cheers

arhh maybe because there is a f***ing big ass bump in the middle of the strut tower.......... and a smal lip where the inside cutout would be..
Now maybe if there were no struts in place it would b a lil simpler but there not, hence the reason Im requesting this small favour............
if the strut top was an exact circle where the inside cutout goes around I would just measure it out, but its more oval shaped and it makes it difficult to work out the right dimensions....

You could probably get it made for a couple of cartons of beer. Thats what I used for money when I need something cut and welded.

It's been a proven method amongst tradesmen for decades.
