right, probably not too technical for you guys, but it is for me. being the mechanically illiterate person that i am.

just noticed a low, grinding, metal on metal kinda sound on the way home.

time for new; what? where? how? how much?

cheers

constant griding or just noise when brakes are applied?

if its noisy when brakes are applied its prolly the indicators on your brake pads...ie they're low. When u do the change you can take them out if it shits you...even when they do start to make noise theres normally a reasonable amount of pad left anyway so you could prolly get another 5k on them

if its constant griding you've prolly already worn your pads out and are chewing into your rotors. Dont let this happen for too long as you'll have to replace shit...as it is you may get away with having the rotors machined

to find out stick your finger in the caliper bracket to see if theres any pad left

handbrake & engine braking ay....been taking the scenic route through tallai? http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

pop your wheels off on the weekend (if not sooner) and take a look...pad change is piss easy

you'll see the caliper & associated bracket bolted over the rotor. If you remove the bolt (14mm) from the bottom side of the bracket the caliper can be made to swing out thus removing the old pads. If you can try and get a g-clamp or something to hold the piston in place so you wont have to worry about a brake bleed. Pop new pads in, tighten bolt and away you go (ive never actually had the piston pop out on me but i always change fluid with pads anyway)

To bleed the brakes just loosen the nipple (10mm i think)on the inside of the caliper...try fitting a piece of hose of the nipple first to contain the fluid. Once you've undone the nipple get a mate to pump the brakes until dry and refil with new fluid...keep pumping the brake until all the air is out...hold the last pump while you tighten the nipple and your done

awesome!
the members on this forum are some of the kindest people i've ever met.
i hope to catch up with you on the weekend, though i probably will have at least bought new brake pads by then. (i hope)

my girlfriend is lending me her new mirage til i get my car fixed, so it probably can wait just a few days lol

(as fun as it was driving about constantly using the handbrake)

cheers - Dwayne

i am trying to avoid doing anything that could go wrong http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/mellow.gif

no sweat man http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

at this stage i'm working most of the weekend but depending on this f***ed up heat wave i may not have to...i'll keep you posted

you dont have to bleed the lines...if the fluid is old or in need of a top up i would. Is the pedal spongey? you will notice the difference between old & new fluid...feels like a new car..almost http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

hmmm
the pedal wasn't spongey but i think it is now.
all depends on what u mean by spongey. if the car is stationary i can push the pedal to the floor, but it still stops me pretty well when i'm moving

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/blink.gif i think pads are the last of your worries if you can do that! maybe time for a caliper rebuild and some new wheel cylinders, master cyl resleeve, new brake lines..flush entire system..all up you'd be looking at about $350-$400 for all of this, well thats what i'm estimating off the prices i can get, thats with new seals though everything, new pads, rotors machined, hoses vary..full set including the rear diff one i got for round $150 toyota genuine for a mate..

don't worry, i'm doing all this stuff shortly anyway.. i do not think you can ever spend enough money on your brakes..

now now dont freak the poor lad out matt...its only just started playing up on him so hopefully its just a bit of rotor wear

but i do agree that you cant spend enough on brakes....no point going if you cant stop http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

it still stops just fine, but differently.
the pedal was nice and hard til i put the new pads on http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/huh.gif

one of the old pads was just down to the metal tho

so you changed them over?

has this fixed your noise issue? How do you mean it stops different?

you've prolly got air in your brake lines if the pedal feels less responsive during driving. How much fluid do you have in the reservoir?

Blood Child

i topped up the reservoir as i bled them (only bled one side cos i had an 8mm spanner(wouldn't fit)). i'm pretty sure it's still full

it fixed that particular grinding, metal on metal noise issue.
i still have another unrelated noise issue in the same corner tho

the brakes still work fine, but they have heaps less resistance than before. it just feels wierd

all fixed. it was just air in the line
