i might as well open a new topic for my new car.
i bought it from gold86 a few months ago, but it's been in storage since. i finally got around to bringing it home on wednesday and have spent every spare moment with it since.
pulling all the interior out etc. mostly just taking off all the good bits and putting them on my daily

no new pics yet, but i will post some when i get the chance

cheers - Dwayne

i tried it on both and i reckon it'd look better on my daily cos it would stand out against the blue but still match with the rear bar

this baby got me $600 in fines 3 doors up from my house just the other weekend.
suffice to say, it won't be going out the front gate for quite some time. and we don't have a side gate

pics demonstrating my inexperience in supension installation should be up in the few days. (au falcon springs with sprinter shocks is not very practical. looks hell funny though, so i'm gonna get some pics b4 i fix it)

ok, i'm currently in the midst of replacing all of the wiring in my car with a complete ae82 loom from a donor car i got for free. if anyone has done this or knows of any particular issues i may come across, be sure to let me know.
the biggest issues i can foresee are lengthening the loom to reach the battery and maybe swapping to column mounted light and wiper switches (if it's a straight-ish swap.

i'll also have more pics up as soon as i get the internets at home again.

column mount switch unit is a straight swap, though i had to cut out some of the trim to fit the wiper switch. ae82 twinky steering wheel is also a nice easy upgrade.

no need to apologise, I love pics! looks like the car is coming along nicely! Also how hard did you find fitting the AE82 dash cluster into the AE86 dash?

Blood Child
25th September 2007, 12:28 AM
basically it's held between the speedo cable plug on the back and the standard ae86 clear plastic cover on the front. i did have to get stuck into the cluster with a hacksaw to remove the ae82 mounts as they were in the way. also had to make a few holes around the sides to clear all the dash nuts and bolts and stuff. i just saw it as a cheaper option than buying a jdm dash.
i'm not sure if it rattles as i've had very little chance to actually drive the car anywhere, but i'll be keeping an ear out once she's on the road.

she's lined up for a roadworthy on friday. i managed to find someone who'd overlook my locker and certain minor things, but does anyone know if i NEED a mod plate before i can get rego for a sprinter with a 4age?

obey wan boenny
26th September 2007, 04:46 AM
I'm pretty sure you don't need a mod plate for a 4AGE into an AE86 because the engine capacity hasn't changed, the engine block is still the same (just has a different head and whatnot) and the engine was actually released in the AE86 chassis.

I've seen people do the swap and then just take the car into QLD Transport and report that the engine number has changed because they swapped engines due to the old one exploding and shit lol.

A guy I know did this and it all seems legit, QLD Transport gave him a slip of paper to say that the engine swap was verified and is OK.

If I'm wrong someone please correct me

 I got mine road worthied last week fine with the 4AGE in it, that was after the previous owner supplied me with the slip of paper from QLD Transport saying the engine

conversion was verified. Afterall it still is a part of the '4A' engine series.

well, i failed my rwc today. i'm just glad it was for things i didn't know were wrong. distributor seal leaking oil onto my heat tape on extractors make a nice bit of smoke, rear axle seals, rack end boots, and some control arm or something.

$500ish and most of a week should get me a rwc (i just left it with my mechanic after it was failed) and he's also getting the engine mod plated just to be sure.

running fine now. turns out the spark plugs were covered in brake fluid. who'd've thunk it eh?
got my new plates tonight and rego this arvo. drove home with supa-wide tyres scrubbing on the rear guards like a bitch. chucked some stockers on the back to save my good 215/60s which may be up for sale soon, due to excessive bigness.
chucked in some thermofan i found at the wreckers since i blew up my last one.
driving down the street tonight and the fronts were screeching even when i was driving straight. i hope alignments are cheap, otherwise i'll have to bite the bullet and have a shot at a diy alignment.
should have my sweet custom front lip on tomorrow. does anyone know how low you can legally go with these?
looks like i'll either keep the stock springs and wheels or swap in the falcon springs and go back to the centrelines.

LOL! please tell me your custom lip is the ol' garden edging

your the best Dwayne :D

10cm is the height restriction for the roads... about a coke can... except the wheels... that would be silly ^_^

looks like my mechanic replaced the rack ends and boots without aligning my shit, so i have an arseload of toe out. gonna try to sort it out myself until i can afford an alignment.

found a voucher for a free alignment at my local tyre shop, so i'll be taking her down later this morning.
tried to take pics of plates on car last night but the reflectiveness of the plates didn't mix well with my shitty photographic skillz.

also realized a relevance of my outback plates.

seems 'out back' might actually be a reference to drifting. or something XD

forgot my speedo still wasn't working so i got onto that as soon as the sun was up this morning.

i thought the pin to the back of my speedo wasn't engaging cos i noticed it was a bit bent, so i chucked her up on stands and mucked about with that for a bit, but to no avail.
shortly after that i had the brilliant notion to check the connections on the gearbox end and found them undone. sorted that, checked again, and this time my speedo actually worked.

overjoyed at this breakthrough, i decided to take my vehicle for a virtual speed run in my driveway and found 130km/h at around 6k in 3rd. (safety first ppl. 1 jackstand under each axle and a jack under the diff.)

should be heading in for my free alignment as soon as the tyre shop opens this morning.

made it all the way to caloundra on sunday without so much as a hint of spontaneous combustion. seems to be running fine, error codes are telling me that the o2 sensor isn't working so it could probably do with a new seal.
misfires a bit when it's low on fuel, but i understand this is pretty normal.

all in all i'm pleased with her performance.

at work atm. mmm dirt roads...

loss of traction at 110km/h courtesy of tvis is quite a hairy experience.

seems to still be running well, though it almost overheated on my way to work monday arvo. gotta get around to making the ae82 temp guage work or installing my aftermarket one. til then it's short distances by day and long drives only at night.

fuel guage doesn't work either, but at least the fuel light does.

got the guages working plus chucked in a speco temp guage. fuel guage was plain fucked and the circuitry going to the temp guage was torn. just swapped some bits over from the donor car out the back.

went to a twincams dyno day on saturday and pulled out 68.1kw while smoking out the workshop courtesy of a rooted o2 sensor. pulled the lowest power of the day too.
picked up another o2 sensor on the way home.

thermostat is rooted too. doesn't work til you warm it up to 110 degrees or so. does anyone know the optimum temp for a 4age? cos it sits between 95 and 105.

yeewwww, new 02 sensor, wat did we end up pullling it out of? haha, how did it go ont he way back, did it seem to run a bit better?

Blood Child

it felt a bit better, though the o2 sensor code still came on. must've been some type of placebo effect or something.

got bored last week and forked out for a new pood filter. turned out the old one had a hole worn through the side. took preventative measures and installed the new one.

finally got around to getting my fully hektik ghetto front lip happening.
reversed out of the driveway, but had to get my mate to lift it up to get back into the driveway.

made the mistake of driving to work (rough dirt road) with the lip still on. FAIL.

also, my tyres never seem to burst. instead they prefer to simply fall apart. now i've only got 3 good tyres <_<

found a bunch of parts in the back room that should probably be attached to my car. see my parts for sale thread for details. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/board/in...c=22354&hl= (http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/board/index.php?showtopic=22354&hl=)

jacked up the car and it seems that one of my trailing arm thingies is bent. apparently trying to back it off a trailer without ramps will do that....

also picked up a pair of old 15" soarer rimz. went to 13 tyre places this morning before i found any tyres close to what i was looking for (2nd hand). closest i found was a pair of 195/55 15s which are still a bit large but seem to fit under the front guards pretty well without scrubbing.

chopped up a pair of king superlow falcoon springs and threw them in the back the other day at work. MY GOD! I CAN ACTUALLY FEEL THE ROAD NOW!
wouldn't mind upgrading the front to match though as it has pretty bad under steer now. espelir front springs will probably up for sale then.

my weekend of epic fail continues...

sunday i got my front pads down to metal and spat one out causing all kinds of fail.

monday i spent all day looking for replacement pads.

monday night on the way home from brissy my shit starts going all cruise control on my ass and 'idling' at 4500.

call racq for the 2nd time and they fail at fixing.

decide to drive home anyway. it ended up sorting itself out on the way.

tonight i ran out of cigarettes at work so i went to drive the 20km to the servo for smokes.
was wondering why my car was sitting funny, but figured it was probably just a falcoon spring out of place.
got to the servo to find a flat tyre. looks like it was punctured on the inside wall.

tomorrow gonna ask our handy welding guy at work if he can make my panhard rod adjustable in case that was the reason for my flat.

somebody up there must hate me.

it was a top drive for a random find. i've got another vid i'm trying to upload, but don't hold your breath. 366mb so i had to split it up for youtube compatibility. unfortunately the filesize is so large due to resolution rather than length; there's only about 7 minutes or so.
on that note, i'm quite impressed at the video capabilities of my $200 digital photo-maker.
