Hey Eddie, you can get 4.556 from the front diff of some hilux surfs, or 4.778 from the rear diff of a diesel 4wd townace import only)

the higher ratios usually come in the front of hiluxs. i have also seen 4.6 in a yr22.

also in every case so far that i have found, an irs ring and pinion will work in a live axle diff and vice versa.

wow thats some serious figures thanks slydar, i didnt quite understnad all that so correct me if im wrong haha realy appreciate all your help!!!!

if im lookin at the hilux surf plate and seeing F4.5 then whatever number depending on lsd or open i should be on a winner?

FAST EDDIE
9th March 2009, 05:01 PM
and how do i physicaly know what ratio the diff is by looking at it and counting teeth im guessing?

Anthony
9th March 2009, 05:12 PM
petrol and diesel both have that ratio in certain versions. You can trust the diff code on the build plate with 4wd's generally because they would have to change both front and rear for it to be different. unlikely.

slydar
9th March 2009, 05:19 PM
on the build plate it should have 1 letter and 3 numbers.

you need the front diff out of a 4x4 hilux. the build plate i think only lists the rear if i remember correctly.. the code for the rear will be GXXX, first 2 numbers are the ratio code. check them against the list above and thats the ratio. front and rear ratios are the same.

toyota ring gears will have the ratio actually written on them.

sometimes its just the number of teeth. something like 41 11.

or just the actual ratio in a circle, like 4.8 with a circle around it. thing to note here is when its written like that, the figure has been rounded. eg my t series 4.778 has 4.8 written on it. but the code on the car was T362.

FAST EDDIE

wicked!! im fairly sure that diff you gave me said 4.3 in wrecker writing how acurate would that be man?

slydar
9th March 2009, 05:24 PM
and sorry should have explained, in that list, the ratio ive written first, then a space, then the 2 digit code for that ratio.

so 4.444 is 11
4.625 is 12
4.556 is 25

those are the numbers youre looking for.

Anthony
9th March 2009, 05:26 PM
yeah it was 4.3 for sure. ive got a 4.7 for mine this time. to go with w58.

FAST EDDIE

well i just went to a comercial wrecker who imports toyota ratios and he was saying he had a 4.7 ratio which got me excited so after alot of measuring and realising the 4.7 was smaler than a f maybe a t or an e he had what he said was an oddball 4.55 ratio, after trying the axle and comparing it to my 4.3 centre it turns out the centre he had was a 4.55 f series. so theres another one to add to the list there is a 4.55 solid axle centre diff available!!!!

Celica RA45
13th March 2009, 06:25 PM
the 4.55 is called a 4,6 they are also 4.78 and 4.88 availible as well brand new crown and pinions are about 450 aussie

slydar

4.556 > code is 25... pretty sure that list is fairly complete.

either way, got what you need now?

just want to clarify one more thing...

i read in here that u can get centres from the front of hiluxs, etc

will the front ratio be the same as the rear??? in theory they should be but is there something in the tranny case that makes a difference???

FAST EDDIE
13th March 2009, 09:16 PM
yes front and rear diffs r the same ratio.

not sure slydar have to try it i neede to try either 4.55 or a 4.77 to see what i need. will see how this onw goes then may need to go to 4.7

i like this alot... going to 4wd wrecker tomorro

no good eddie, the f is part of the auto transmission code. the diff is b series, incompatible.

slydar
14th April 2009, 07:42 PM
that code doesnt make any sense to me.

the next biggest size diff after G is A, and that is what i would expect in the rear of a late diesel hilux, but yeah i couldnt tell you if the front diff was gonna be f series or not.

but yeah that code doesnt make sense to me.. or set out how they usually are. maybe if you took a photo of the build plate i could help but yeah later stuff is a bit strange sometimes.

eg's for say, a ta22 celica, which will have a 4.1 t series. code will be T292

another eg, say, mid 80s tarago, mostly are e series 4.3, they will be E282

to get an F series out of a 4x4 hilux, usually earlier stuff is G series rear, so it might be G282, if its G series rear it will be F series front, front and rear ratios will be the same, so you can assume with some level of certainty that the front diff is a 4.3 F series.

Rip it
14th April 2009, 11:12 PM
Also remember that all rear Hilux's are G series, independent fronts are different, could be worth looking at the code for an independent front, should be F series. They are different front and rear.

I've got a 4.5 shimmed lsd that I'm wanting to swap for a 4.11 if that interests you? I'm not 100% sure if it's an f or g series though. Is there a quick way to find out?

I wouldnt do that.. those early hilux's with the solid front end have a G series Rear.. but F Series front..

pretty sure you couldnt have a shimmed lsd if it was g series.

also ant how necessary do you think 4.7 is with a 58? I have a 55 in there till i finish the car and can afford a nice 58, but if the center needs to be changed id rather have that good to go before I get it all back together, its a 4.3 at the mo.

Anthony

hard to say. 4.3 will be fine, I just wanted to get the same overall ratio as the J160 in 2nd with 4.3 was as I liked it. I guess with the W58 and a 4.3 it would just be a little quicker. probably not such a bad thing.
