I was pretty sure there was never a good FWD car that was made, mainly because of its major disability of being FWD...

there are some real similarites to the 86 scene, though it is definately a little more old school. they dont run any bigger wheel than a 15, and most the wheels theyre into are classic styles, alot of them 3pc. (alot of them are on 13x8s with 175 50 tyres http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif )

theyre into carbs and throttle bodys, the SLAM their cars, ect.

ive owned one. ill get another one day. the are an awesome car to drive, pretty easy to get alot of lift off over steer.

pug 205 gti will shit over nearly all fwd cars
look at the position of the wheels
just like the original mini the wheels are positioned as far into the corners to give the feel of a go-kart
cupped to the 1.9 or mi16v from the 405 it is pure grin material

Equal between mk1 Suzuki Gti and Pug 206 Gti. I'm a little biased cos I've owned both, the Pug handling is awesome once you get the hang of it (it likes to oversteer, I'm not sure how, but it does) and the Swift had nuts straightline speed for what it was, with good handling as well. They may not be "pure sports cars" in some peoples minds, but ff can be a hell of a lot of fun. Isn't that what its all about?

I vouch with MC on this one, the cooper deserves a plug.

My freind has 2 cars - an ae86, and a cooper. It's not an S, but its pretty well a circuit spec conversion (1380cc, twin del'orto's, lightened flywheel, very long duration cam, ported, stripped interior, caged, suspension, etc).

It is the angriest N/A car i've been in - and it sounds beautiful.

Slydar - you are right, there's some very "unique" British engineering in them. Not sure I'd go so far as to say a joke, but that's a personal thing. From a driver's viewpoint I would dare say it is at least as fun/challenging to drive as anthing else. And it's one of the few cars ever made that you can still buy every part - literally - aftermarket, given the development it saw from its racing history. Sure - I know you're going to say "that's because everything standard was *&$#".....

Can't comment on the Pug, never been in an older one. Heard many good things though.

my 2 cents anyhow.

dude, engine was designed in the early 50's it was fundamental around then...you find a car that delivered so much from something so simple over the years.

The Cooper S may have a crap engine by todays standards, but they have so many race & rally wins its not funny, they still outhandle nearly anything on the road worth less than $200,000, they have shitty brakes but who needs em' when you dont have to slow down for corners, they owned at bathurst ('66 9 minis entered and they filled the first 9 places) and if it wernt for the winging french they would have 2 more monte carlo wins aswell.
On top of that they have the best after market support of nearly any car (accept '67 '68 '69 camaros, you can buy an aftermarket shell for those things), you can get conversion kits to run swift motors in them, among others, and there just so damn cool (the original italian job, need i say more). And they still embarass new machinery some 55yrs after they were invented, thats gotta count for something.

Also, the "new" minis suck ass, just to be clear http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

P.S. I still hate front wheel drives, but if i wasnt a fat bastard i would own a mini in a second http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif

needless to say, the bmw mini's got rover's un-rev happy 4cyl (when rover was originally going to build the mini, it was designed for that engine) so when bmw took over the now defunct rover, they had to stick with it, as bmw's engine's dont fit under the bonnet, and ive never seen a bmw engine fwd, except for the isotta http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

i read, atleast 2 years ago they were testing minis with peugeot's peaky engines...but it never happened http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/sad.gif

i remeber at a historic car meet not long ago, with camaros to studebakers to minis to Fj holdens...

a cooper s won around wanneroo by about 20 seconds against the A class cars.....such a machine. The dogbox was louder than the engine...hmmm http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

what the eeeFFF is that car? (above) and its got a F20c in it!

Hey isn' this poll about what the best FF car is and not a 'is RWD is better than FF poll'.

Anyway earlier on, there was a post about vtecs being vtired up, HONDA does have some of the best NA 4cylinder engines ever made in their line up: We all the know what the F20c can do in the S2K: 2L DOHC VTEC 177kw/240hp Aus spec redlining @9000rpm, 1.8L B18c5 DOHC VTEC in the DC2R 147kw/197hp Aus Spec redlining @8000rpm, 1.6L DOHC VTEC 118kw/160hp redlining @9000rpm and in addition, the almighty 3.2L Vtec V6 engine in the NSX Type R producing 209kw/280hp STOCK! All with potential to rev up at least 10,000 rpm and even beyond!
The NSX TYPE R 02 Model will kill a R34 GTR down the qtr mile easy! and it's NA

So if you put a stocko ITR up against a stocko top of the range Celica,
the celica will get creamed around the track and drag strip!

VTEC rocks!

have to say i agree with you... honda's make an awsome NA engine.. far better than anyone at the moment..

but i love the feeling of toyota VVT-IL in the sportivo rolla... coming on full lift at about 6700rpm.. it changes lane.. hahaha.. and they sound just as good a vtec http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

Peugeot 205 GTI and Old Golf GTis are both good FF drive cars.. S16/GTi 306 are pretty good too..

New Golf and Clio are both excellent cars, in term that you can go pretty fast with paddle-shift, excellent traction control etc. but they are not as involving to drive as their ancestors, in my opion too civilised and do no encourage you to push them to the limit...

Old school mini is pretty much the only ff car i would own if i had a choice in the matter..

a mate of mines father has done an old cooper S up, roll cage, stiffer springs, semi slicks, racing buckets, 4 point harnesses and it runs on avgas... thing hauls ring apparently.. so if u see a little black mini flying around brisbanes southside let it past... u wont keep up http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

theyre into carbs and throttle bodys, the SLAM their cars, ect.

Grab a decent euro hatch (206 gti, 205 gti, Renault clio sport) and then you will see what ff oversteer is about!

Great thing is is that you can drive out of a slide by pointing the front wheels where you want to go and mash the throttle - I don't really understand how you spun out unless you were absolutely maching it (I've over corrected a couple times in the Pug, its a bit scary!)

I'd have to say best FWD car Suzuki Swift GTi, throughout all the models (mk1,mk2 and mk3).

I own a mk3 and I love driving it, sooooo much fun and handles superbly.

Like someone else said they do things that normal people think "Thats shouldn't be able to do that"

For a 1.3L they are awesome, can't wait till I build my turbo up and have some real fun :D

The whole point of the 'hot hatch' mentality is for the car to be lightweight, high revving and N/A with quick handling and awesome throttle response and noise from the naturally aspirated motor. By turboing it, torque is massively increased which will just be frustrating when trying to drive fast through the twistys with the front wheels struggling to cope with all the grunt, not being able to get the power down. Then you have to worry about buying bigger brakes, the 5 gearboxs you blow a year, a decent LSD, etc, etc.

Yeah it will be quicker in a straight line but you'll most probably find that the effort and money wont be worth the result. If you want a quicker car, maybe buy something faster stock like an Integra type R honda of buy something that is already turbo and rwd.
