Theres lots of people here who found out about the 86 from initial D,

theres also people who were interested in these cars way before the whole drift/takumi craze took off.

What would have happened if D wasnt made would these cars or drift still be popular
And for the people who have been around for a while Do you think initial D fuct the 86 scene ?

Comments opinions ?

This is a GENERAL DISCUSSION any opinon is welcome. and a poll to guage how many of you are which side

please feel free to flame hard I know this is a Very sensitive topic for some people out there.

initial d is an awesome anime and i really enjoyed watching the whole series. a lot of people like initial d but idolise takumi. i have never liked any anime and i got hooked on initial d and am disappointed they stopped producing episodes for a while
*flame suit zipped up*

the thing that got me into ae86s is my ae82 as i orginally wanted an s13 but after driving 9 examples i saw this thing sitting at a dealer and i test drove and bought it straight away, it was just that damm fun. i always thought sprinters being a big F**KING rip off but after my ae82 i wouldnt mind getting one as this car is just so much fun to drive and a sprinter being rwd with a 4age must be worth it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif

There should be a "He's ok but I'm not fussed about it". I'm definately not a fanboi in denial but I'm not wet in the pants for him, that's for sure.

I've only seen a few episodes, they were pretty good but so damn expensive.

I have to admit i USED to like initial D bak in the day but then it got translated into english n every 12 y/o talked about how cool takumis panda 86 is. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/angry.gif And it was also initial d that got me into ae86s and drift in general but since then (bout 4 or so years ago) ive tried to learn as much as possible about jap cars n driftin.

So in conclusion BOO takumi YAY drift

There should be a "He's ok but I'm not fussed about it".[/b]

yeh agreed but once the poll is made theres no going back to change it, i should have thought of the options more but i really just wanna see in favour and not

Also
when talking about Initial D can you specify if its the:

1) Subtitled internet version (original)

2) TokyoPoP Version - red cover DVDs at eb`s and car shops

For example say:

"Ive seen the tokyopop version" or "ive seen the original version"

im not sure about the differences apparently TAK has an american accent in one http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

LOve it.. don't be scared to say so.
I dislike the haters too.. cause its a fucken cartoon.. get over that people love it and want sprinters cause they like the cartoon. I want a takumi replica trueno one day.. so what!
If there was a sweet cartoon on the datsun 120y i would probably want one.

i bought my sprinter back in '00 '01 and only ever seen about 5 mins of the first ep on the net, personally i think initial d overrated but in my opinion it seems to be a hell of a lot easier to get parts and accesories(new and used)now than 5-6 years ago. but also the growth and popularity of drifting has helped considerably so we all should be happy that our beloved hachis are so popular because if they werent we probably wouldnt have ae86drivingclub. now that would suck wouldnt it!! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif and thats my two cents

p.s. takumi does suck ass http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

but too bad my dad bought the 86 waaay b4 any of this 86 craze and showed/tought me about how good a car it is http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif
Plus if i idolise anyone its Katsuhiro Ueo, that'd be the main reason why i'd buy a 86.

initial d is great, i got hooked the first time i saw it back in the day (about 3 years ago)

got me into drift and ae86's then i got a reality check about how much they cost http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

but 2 years ago i had the opportuity to get my ae86 and jumped at it.

initial d is cool, takumi is just a character. katsuhiro ueo is my hero http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif ueo really got me motivated to buy one and get into drifting.

i saw the subtitled version. dubbed is shit. original music is great too

no real option for me in the poll though

i admit initial d got me into liking ae86s, i endeavoured to learn everything about them, i have spent countless hours on club4ag reading the tech forums, ask my mates, i dont shut up about them technical everything, i believe i have gone past the call of duty trying to learn about 86s. i dont necesarily want a treuno, would be nice but a levin would suit me just fine.

Those that wax lyrical and refer to a cartoon as some form of reality demonstrate why ignoring the basics of evolutionary theory is dangerous for the continuity of the human race.

initial D got me liking anime lol.
saw a few episodes a few months before i got my licence back from a 2yr suspension, found a nice but damaged sprinter for $600 and thought 'what the hell, why not?' i needed a new car anyway and i had a few months to fix it.
now i would never go back.
i'm only up to dvd #8 due to spending all my money on my sprinter instead.

also, if anyone is wanting dvd #8 i have a spare copy for sale. stupid autobarn wouldn't give me a refund

hey i was into drifting 86's just b4 jms started pt gawler days **back in the day** then after i finally bought an 86 (b4 i could drive by the way) i saw an arcade game with my car in it, so i chucked in my $6 bucks foe a card and a go which turned out to be fun, so then i started looking it up and found heaps of stuff and want to panda my car (but not white and black... an actual colour) then i found panda to be way too common thru the internet so i havent really got into the whole panda thing again, but it doesnt stop my from getting a true jap comic of it (right 2 left in japanese), car models and even a dodgie copy of the movie with subtitles (actual cartoons and shit, i think its in cantonese?!?) my bro got me in melbourne on a trip there

Initial D is AWESOME!! and Takumi is my hero!! I've seen every season including the end of season 4 and i love it!! And its not that unrealistic... geez more realistic than most car movies i've seen... And most of the stuff they talk about is actually quite real... gutter technique, anti lag system, reducing countersteer angle... most of the time its the translation that fucks it up... and also the aussie version is so altered... due to some of the adult themes implied in the original... I'm especially impressed with the detail they put into the cars... down to the parts n tyres they use... a lot of thought has gone into it... unlike the movie http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/blink.gif

Spend the time to watch the whole thing (make sure its a translated jap version)... i'm sure u'll enjoy it!! and maybe even learn a thing or too... http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif

Comic was fun reading, cartoon's pretty close, movie sucked balls.

As for Takumi, his character does nothing for me, just some spaced out kid that seems to like his car. The latest season's so bloody boring, I mean outside of the racing the plot development is always the same. And there's bugger all development in side stories. At least they had romance and comedy in the first couple of seasons which sorta rounded off the main storyline.

What I can't stand are people who refer to the cartoon as gospel on real life driving, and idiots that yell out Takumi or some stupid Initial D reference when they see you driving an AE86.

I like initial D, but thats because I like watching cartoons and stuff.. I like 86's because my boyfriend got me into them.. I watch Initial D because I like the show, not because I want to be Takumi or anything other than I like to watch alot of tv. The only thing that really bothers me is people like a friend of mine who was like 'omg you own a panda but a red one'

i dunno bout the rest of you, but i have had my 86 for a few years.. a long time befor i knew initial D even existed.. or there was a massive drift culture about to explode.. matter of fact people would often approch me and ask what the back of my car was off.. they had never seen a sprinter with a boot befor.. (hence the reason i got the plates IAE86) most people thought it some some panel beaters incarnation of a sprinter with a nissan or something..

did you all go out and buy wrecked JZA-80 supras after seeing the fast and the furious?? seriously if someone bought a car because of a cartoon or annimae what ever you wanna call it.. you deserve to be slapped! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

agreed. i bought the 86 because my friends looked so cool driving thru melbourne with 10-15 sprinters lined up. [although it was TAKUMI leading the group (for those who dont know TAKUMI, its the tofu 86 replica)] and drifting on the streets, facing oncoming traffic, dragging big skylines and being able to keep up with them in a 23 yr old car, all these things added up to equal what i drive now.
however..buying a sprinter because of a movie/anime and being prepared to be ripped off (kawaii) is just stupid. some people have too much money to blow.

Storyline aside... cuz thats really up to personal taste... Can some one tell me whats unrealistic about Initial D... I think a major problem is that people dont take it seriously enough, thats why the level of drifting in japan is so much higher!! (I assure you initial D has done wonders in promoting the sport of drifting!!) Japanese people take their anime very seriously!! I'm sure most of you would of seen the video of Ueo driving up hill and down hill at his local touge... The level of driving looked pretty close to what takumi was doing in Initial D!! i'm sure if anyone can drive like that, they'll pone more than just a few skylines and evos!!

Instead of sitting back and thinking... yeah what a crock of shit... how about thinking... hmm... i wonder if its possible and go out and practise... Thats the sort of mentality people need if they want to be successful in this sport!!

Another thing... how much money people have and how much money people spend is up to them... please dont be a hater just cuz he/she's got more money than you!! If u havent realised, u need a fuckload of money to succeed in motorsport!! U really think Micheal Schumaker or Valintino Rossi would be as great as they are without a massive financial support!?!? These guys would of been spending at least $30k a year on developing skills/experience since they were 5...

I just feel theres too much hating going on! Think about what Initial D has done for u... at the very least, its double the resale value of my car http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif ... cant complain about that!!

I just woke up and felt like blabbering on... anyways... Anime Rock!! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif

Ughh, I can't stand "Tak" (Takumi is fine with me!), Kitten you obviously watch the ToykoPop release huh? Do urself a biiiig favour and grab the asian release from ur local Chinatown or ebay. It is so much different.

Tak or Takumi doesnt care about anything because he is not a thinker, he instinctly doesnt even analyse when he drives, he just drives on pure instinct, only Ryosuke trained him to start to analyse.
But other than when he is driving. Itsuki described him best, he is just a braindead idiot holding a donut (or some bullshit, I can't remmeber what the actual words were).
Takumi as a character overal, besides his confusion with Mogi is a pretty damn boring and undeveloped character in my opinion. Ryosuke is so much interesting, and so much still remains unknown about him such as his exact past and his future (which is however speculated but not confirmed that he is quititng racing for med school).
And thats why Jay Chou fitted the character so well too, he is pretty braindead lookin, same as Takumi (but he can sing)...

Stroywise, although you could look at it as an overtake of the Emporer Evo's, Season 2 I believe had the most entertaining and developed story. It seemed a layed story, as Season 1 seemed a pure linear progression story. Stage 3 was semi-complex as it was tying up alot of the loose ends throught both series. And 4th Stage, I believe it was good as what it was meant to be, which I believe is kinda like an LP album vs an EP release in music; as an analogy.

Yes I like Initial D, but not too fussed on Takumi, could put up with the few fanbous that went out of their way to find the foreign Initial D and enjoy it, but I dispise with 100x passion the TokyoPop spawns...

However my encounter with 86 was throught couple friends, one was a car freak and the other more specifically a Corolla head. And we were together in town and saw what loked like a Corolla but unique in being a 2 door hatch with really nice long lines (I fell in love with it on first site, as I already like Rollas as I was introduced to them through my friend, but this was a betta looking Rolla shape). And I had no idea what it was, neither my Corolla head friend. My carhead friend sed it was a Sprinter, I went huh??? And he said kinda like the car from Initial D, a Trueno but different. And then I went double huh?!?! So I downloaded 1 episode on 28.8 to cure my curiosity, and then cause of where it ended I kept on downloading more, so painful on 28.8. Got upto the intro of the GTR before I was satisfied....

Anyways..... anyone who owns the Urotsukidoji set, would they car to share some "backup copies" Plzzzzzzzz!!!! Or any hardcore animes I havent seen. Tis a cool and healthy fasination I believe *nods*

Yea Initial D fits a nice niche involving cars and anime as 20vtouge sed. Nuthin better than amix of 2 things u live for. But to me it wasn a true anime until I saw Extra Stage and a set of titties were shown lmao.
Is there any other car anime? I know there is car manga such as Wangan Midnight and Overrev. Anyone know if Wangan Midnight was ever made into a anime movie or series? It has a fair amount of underground popularity, it was even made into a PS2 game.... 240z's are koool!

Namco realised a arcade game about 1 year ago very similar to Initial D Arcade Stage, called Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 2. Was a card operated game, and was a lot more interesting than Initial D.

First saw Inital D in '98 when i was a huge manga and anime fanboy, loved it to death, baught a sprinter, thought i could drive like takumi down a mountain pass, drifted off a cliff, almost killed myself, crawlled out of my smashed passenger window, climbed up the cliff and watched my car burn to pieces waiting for the CFS and an ambulance

Inital D is great, but it's fiction, and you shouldn't think otherwise.

Meh not fussed.

My older broher bought a sprinter when i was 14, i wanted one ever since then n loved em way before drifting was even thought of here, Im now 26 bought mine about 2yrs ago,

gze you think kawaii is nuts your gonna love me, I paid 13k for my, and i was glad to do so, Dont regret it for a sec. just the way I am, Glad to pay what its worth, i know what a 4ac poo version is worth and I know what your average 4 age modde one is worth, just as i know what iwas getting would of set the previuos owner back a bucketload than what he was selling it for....

although I dont normally get irritated, today i am, not by the Tak lovers but by those that think i drive an 86 to be like him and that i wana be the next drift king, those that think we as 86 drivers are delusional to be sprinter drivers and that we pay what we pay & do what we do for our rides, Get over and go back to your simple meaningless life, be happy with your nissans and other non 86s, frankly Ive had enuff and the next tool that gives me grief over it.... will wish they didnt. nuff said

ok, love initial D, love my 86, spent like a billion dollars on the arcade game (ver. 3 on my fourth card now, and almost finished maxi tune 2 as well)...

i got my car before i even knew what initial D was, i had a list of about 25 different cars, from silvias, 944 porsche, bmw, corollas, pulsars and rx7's... the only reason i bought my 1st one coz it was only $1300,and was a shit heap, but i loved it, tha handling and the experience... my second one which ive had for 3yrs (excatly2 weeks from today) was only $2200 and was fantastic..

initial D is fiction but it is based on elements of truth.

the 86 is known and is a bit of a giant killer, right?
it combo of light weight, and numerous engine combos means its never short of power... whether it be N/A turbo or supercharged (orr both)

its simple suspension geometry of live axle works better than it has any right to, yes?
everyone has there own opinion on how it should be set up, for all we know it could be standard suspension in TAK's car (its eluded to that its not...)

to give an example when tak races maya and simone and he follows, this is not uncommon and very smart as he say "if they can do it so can i..." many people racing under powered cars on circuits use this technique to try and over take more powerful cars on corners...

initial D is a cartoon, always willl be. its a fun game, and somehting pretty to look at when your got not much to do, but if you want to be tak i pity you, for the only way to drive like him (if thats even possible) is practice, practice, practice...

I actually have a bit of a soft spot for Initial D.

Dad convinced me to buy an ae86 off his mate as my first car long before I had any real interest in cars or driving. I live at the top of a mountain and I taught myself to drive without really knowing that I was doing it. I drove my bog stock 86 40,000k's in the first year, most of which was on Mt Nebo. Now, 3 years later, my ae86 has grown and so has my driving - I'm into all things 86 now, building my second car and honestly striving to get into some ameture track/drift days. But I'll always be trying to learn more about my driving and I think now I have achieved a decent level of skill with limited professsional/circuit experience.

So yeah, when I saw Initial D about a year ago I had a bit of a soft spot for Takumi. I think the storyline kicks arse, and I also think a lot of the concepts regarding the cars/driving are less bullshit than people think. A lot of the things Takumi learns in the first couple of series are things I came across while learning to drive, long before I'd even heard of the 86 craze.

I think the only thing that Initial D gets really wrong is the safety aspect. In the anime, there is pretty much no regard to safety whatsoever. On the street, the safety aspect really holds you back from pushing you skill past a certain point.

i agree

storyline does kick arse
a lot of people do think the driving is BS

people seem to forget that Initial D it self is like produced by DRIFT KING him self...forgot his name but u all know who im talking about
ive seen a short documentary about I.D, it was about how they got the storylines and how season 3 was going to end and how season 4 is going to be like or something...

anyways, my point is...dont hate takumi, not his fault his so good, i like to think i'll be as good as him if i drove at an early stage with a sprinter that has highly modified suspension, on a mountain pass, dry/wet/snow, everyday, only natural to try new skills in a sprinter, or if ur a P plater

Incorrect. I coined the term Takumi Tax back on the old toymods forums. Direct your hatred at me :D

And takumi hasn't got shit on keichi, who do you think takumi and the whole story is actually based on?

i reckon its pretty cool show, sometimes its a bit slow...heaps of dialog between driving bits, and kinda annoying as you have to read it all. i dunno what you guys are complaining about. its a cartoon show...about the things we love....CARS!!!

the TV show on its own i like, i just cant stand all the wanna be's, that try and be like him/copy the show.

anyone know what season/episode they are up to now? i gave up downloading them a few eps into "stage 4" the animation was getting pretty good. heaps better than the earlier "stages".

i thought the movie was trash, but the series is good, ive always loved jap animie, ive also always loved cars, namely 4age'd cars (my first love was an aw11) initial d just happen to combine both. If initial d wasnt around there would be some other crap floating around negatively towards sprinters, its how stuff works, just like if mad max didnt exist there would probably be alot less bogans.

i love initial d =D, without it i reckon i'd be oblivious to what kind of cars are out there, I'd be more like oo its a nissan skyline rather then owah its a r32 gtr. and initial d help me not to pick Fast and Furious tips "stickers make cars go fast" kind of attitude but rather, my gawd horse power isnt everything in touge.

So yeh i like takumi, but BUNTA's better (lol) http://youtube.com/watch?v=aR5XyHtI9Ew
