View Full Version : Scale models thread

Well, Genkin had a good idea, and that is that we have a dedicated pics/progress/show-off/tips etc thread about model cars. I'll delete my posts in the other thread and migrate them here....

I got to the painting stage on the sprinter I showed pics of; however had a couple of masking errors so have stripped a couple of sections back for a repaint to correct them.

Anyway, post your completed/in progress/questions whatever in here.

Mods, maybe you could clean up genkin's thread a bit? I'm happy to reanswer any questions, repost pics whatever in here.

Hey well, i've got 4 models. All nissans, and part of the Silvia family. Got my S13 and S14 as gifts and loved them, so i bought an S15 (in Progress) and a 180 (Haven't started).

Nah mine is a levin. I've had more masking issues, I think my masking tape is too thick and its caused "steps" in the paint.... Might have to just call this one "drift style,lol...

nargh theyre quite easy once u figure out a few techniques. the painting is the hardest to master, mines still heaps dodgey. but somehow you always end up being pleased when its finished

Andrew
7th April 2006, 11:21 PM
I'm also not fond of paying $50 just for the model.

What brand do you guys buy? When I bought models a few years ago I always bought Tamiya. Their quality was streets ahead most, is it still the same? Who makes Sprinters?

Axentrik
8th April 2006, 03:57 AM
I think Tamiya has the highest quality.
But Fujimi and Aoshima seem to make all the kool kits. Like tuning company cars like the MCR GTR etc...

meadan
8th April 2006, 05:24 PM
yeah tamiya seems to have the highest quality and pricetag. once u get into scratchbuilding and modifying you can get around the quality of the other kits. my levin is still my favourite and they are one of the most basic kits available, theres like no parts in the box which u actually need

20vtouge86

where do you guys get all your models from???

-Brent-
10th April 2006, 04:03 PM
You can buy them from your Local Hobby Store, whatever that is, OR theres a great shop in Japan www.hlj.com that sells a LOT of models, it tells whether they are in stock and converts the currencies straight away. I suggest the online shop if you really wan't to get into it, although i've never bought from there, if i want to buy a specific model i will http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

meadan
11th April 2006, 08:16 PM
yeah i have a few more pics if you want. they might take a while to load.
details:
fujimi ae86 levin 2door
normal watanabe wheels with custom made lips which are about 16 inch in scale
fully scratchbuilt turbo 4age motor from various random parts
kind of jblood body kit
dodgey paint which had heaps of orange peel so i put a light blue coat over the bright red

13th April 2006, 02:18 PM
Damn good work Meadan, praise too u.
Just curious what did you use to do the bodywork?

And there is finally a enginebay detailed ae86 about to be released, just to inform people.

I have a problem.
I have a nice DR30 ironmask model that was hard enough to find. And one of the front windshield pilars has a kink in it near the roof, about 3 mm down. Cause of where it is it holds alot of strength to the kinked shape.
Anyone have any ideas how to remedy this?

-Brent-
13th April 2006, 04:42 PM
Use Putty http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif That would be my only idea, or use some styrene and completely make the whole pillar again.. There is ways, just got to be skilled http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

it can get like that wolfwood....
I remember about a couple of years ago when I started to pick up modeling again..... I was building a Fujimi Mine's R32. After I fucked the paint on the body the 3rd time I crushed it in my hands and mangled it.
Now I am halfway through building up a Tamiya kit with the Mine's layout......... superior item with engine detail. But it has the early style bumper without the vents. Wish I thought to keep the wreck I mangled for the Nismo vented bumper.

All the Fujimi AE86 kits have the cage, spotlights, fire extinguisher (not NOS bottle!), as they are also available in a "Rally version" which uses all those bits. Theres also a group A touring car version but to be honest I wouldn't know what extras you get in that .
Doesn't matter if its 3 door, 2 door, trueno or levin they should all have those rally bits though.

Axentrik
18th April 2006, 06:01 PM
How do all the components fit together? Some experience with fujimi, they dont always fit together in some parts all so well. You kinda have to judge and the glue is all the holds them in position. No notches of butting up against things.

I was building an AE86 ages ago; someone squashed it, then I had paint problems after I repaired the damaged roof - so it went back in the box. I was clearing old kits out today and decided to give it a new lease on life. I chopped off the damaged roof and started a rear bulkhead- AE86 Drifto ute bro!!!!!OMGSIK!!!

Not decided yet, but I may paint it like this, and tweak the front bumper to be more like the URAS one (which should be straighforward).

I started on the TE71 I reserved myself. Lots of work to go.
I've modified the front (filled the park light apertures in the guards, cut back above the bumper), and begun fabricating some quad lights (made most of the surrounds, need lenses and buckets now).
I'm going to section the bumpers, use the ends and make chrome centre sections in c section styrene or press some aluminium sheet to suit. Not sure about a grille, might cut it all out and stick a false radiator and oil cooler behind there.

Can't decide on wheels but most likely the A3As.

i got my kit and some uber deep dish MK1's off floody 31

the Aoshima kit is pretty sik detail wise. i used to build a lot of old yank muscle car kits when they were cheap and plentiful, and this kit shit all over them.

coolest thing so far is the different height modes. the rear has 2 holes the axle can go through, stock height and slammed

also you just flip the kingpins in the front (doesn't have strut front end http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif) and it lowers the height to suit the back. instructions are all in japanese but i recognised the tricks when i saw them from my old kits http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

Just a quick question, how do most of you guys go about painting the body's of these models. I cant image youd get the desired affect from paint brushes (like the little paints that they sell for models), but im also not sure if spray cans will work too well.

Im going for a really out there color on the model so im thinking of going to to 3d p&p and asking what i can use that will stick on it, maybe have to use bumper primer or something.

v-tec
5th October 2007, 05:26 PM
Ended up getting some paint mixed up at 3d, and used plastic primer. They reckon you should be able to do that for all the parts in the models so ill probly just do it that way.

heres the shell painted

http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/592/modelwo4.jpg

Just out of curiosity, for people that have built these before, how many of you used clear coat afterwards?
My one turned out a bit more matt than i thought it would so im thinking off clear coating it, but not sure if itll ruin it..

Anyway looking forward to having this all built up with the kit bits and wheels and everything together.

while we're on the topic of models heres one i prepaired ealier... lol i wish bought it in singapore last year.

I was dissapointed that of all the d1 models that were there, there was no Ae86's. Would have loved to buy a model of Hibino's old cream coupe

Im gona appologise in advance for spamming with pics, but got my levin finished up. Got some pictures this arvo.

Many thanks to Mark (floody) for sorting out the wheels for me plus a couple of stickers and other stuff on there.
The color came out really really cool with the final coat... but then i bloody overspray the thing, tryed to redo it and it came out all matt colored... oh well.
Im probly gona put some sratches and things on the shell to make it look like a beaten up drift car later on but here's how its looking for now.
Only real custom thing i did on it was the exhaust, it was ment to have two little small dump style pipes but i pulled two tubes off the plastic bits and make some dori pipes. Theyre way too long but tryed my best anyway.

I think it came out pretty good for my first model car:

Any tips on how to modify these so they sit lower?
As far as i can see the shell clips into the sub frame thing and will only sit at that one height. i tryed to fit it down a bit lower but the back of the interior touches the hatch so it physically cant go lower.

Hey guys, only just stumbled across this thread...

My Build of my AE86 3 Door Levin:
Goal: make it similar/exactly how i want my car in the next few months...

Only just started taking pics of this build after i was a few weeks into it,
i build it slowly, 10-15 minutes on it every 2nd day or so
i got lucky, as i started the project supercheap had 5 cans of paint for $10... i win

Body: undercoated silver to attempt to get a metallic effect
http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/4981/001mn8.jpg

Exhaust: Old tip sut off (pictured beside) and new twin pipes put on
(i use the plastic bars from the frame packaging)
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/7876/002mo7.jpg

Drilled holes in the end of my new twin pipes... not the easiest drilling i have done
http://img48.imageshack.us/img48/1773/003dx4.jpg

The sump/bottom of the engine and the lower control arms
i photographed the lighter becuase i melted the lower control arms and stretched them out a fair bit, now it has lots of camber and track
you can see the thinning in the arms where they have been stretched
http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/5132/004ls8.jpg

Dash, came with 3 steering wheel options, i chose this one, i put carbon tape on the dash altho the hatch is waaay to big, meh, and it has a digital dash zomg
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/4715/005aa3.jpg

Rear axel and wheels, bent at the ends for slight camber... painted to have polished lips
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/2419/006ef2.jpg

Explaination in the picture
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/3487/007kg4.jpg

Cage, it came with the main hoop and back legs as a 4 point, i put the cross brace in, planning on putting a bit more work into this, making it an 8 with alot more bracing
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/2567/008rs5.jpg

Carbon on the dash
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/158509.jpg

Seats in the car, i cut away the passenger bracket and to lower it and move it back, drivers seat is a bucket painted the same as my real ones..

Exhaust angle/mounting
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/4586/011av6.jpg

How i paint things, find everything you want a certain colour and spray it all together, so much easier

will update over the next few days...

i'd say its 75% complete

flip the front struts for lowness or swap them left to right and invert

also rear end had a bit you glued in either side that the "axle" slipped through, should've had 2 holes in it, slip the axle through the top hole.

floody, those a3a's are they the Kai parts series??[/b]

Yes, however...
They are only half the width of the rims on the hilux, and staggered. Thats two sets of fronts on the kei car (its tiny), they're only like 7mm wide. On my TE71 I'm using two sets of the A3A rears as the fronts are too narrow for that sort of size car (i.e. anything KE70/AE86 size or bigger). The tyres are different too, and to be honest I felt a bit ripped off. The other Kai parts rims, like the formula mesh, sakura, mkIs, MkIIs, MKIIIs, XR4s, techno phantoms, starsharks, custom rim, bilbo, shadow spoke, enkei focus, and soon watanabe 8 spoke, are way better.

I think the narrow ones translate from Japanese as Kai Parts Flat Rim. I got some Impul dish rims which were the same, tall and narrow and crap, orange box. So I wouldn't buy the impul dish, volk mesh, a3a etc. You can see on the box art the different tyres, stay away they're crap.

That looks sick Grant!

Front half of the cage was a mega fail, i only molded it so it fits the inside bit of the car but it doesnt run alont the roof lines so basically blocks out the drivers line of sight... lol well at least he has a cage to protect him haha

Thought i'd chuck mine up - currently working on a Yamaha YSR-M1 - Valentino Rossi's 04 MotoGP bike. Finished assembling it tonight, so just have to make a start on the stickers - the bike is VERY detailed compared to the cars! Lots of little brake lines etc you have to hook up. Its good though.

The WRC AE101 (?) Corolla was my first one, Calsonic GTR was second, and AE86 was third (not finished - tried to get it "panda" but f$#ked it up and been struggling to get a nice paint job on it since).

Nice bikes man. I'm doing a '79 Kawasaki Z1000 model with a fair bit of custom shit.. I'll get some pics up one day. Old Jap bikes get modded much like old Jap cars, big oilcoolers, carbs with open bellmouths, big exhausts etc, lol.

Fat coupe Grant.
Those 345 tyres are massive, I had to widen my hakosuka kit almost 5mm each side for its watanabes, and they still touch the chassis on the inside, and I had to change them from female fit to male for back space.. Thats the equivalent of a 100mm widebody each side on a real car!
The 345 series rims are a scale 15x14" rear! I have a set in Watanabes and a set of Lamborghini ones, lol. You can get TV-Rs and some OZs as well, but I'd never seen the sakuras by fujimi before.

DId you use tape, or just a steady hand? I want to get my povo looking ae86 looking like that (tried panda but f$#ked it up, so have to sand it back and fill it now  )

Very nice collection- those two in particular are stunning.

Aoshima AE86 is such an awesome kit, I should finish mine.

I just completed this, finally...one down, pile to go, haha.

Its pretty much box stock with new rims, extra chrome foil work, metal license plates, opened tailgate, made the toolbox, custom exhaust.

Man that hilux is awsome....the wheels and bent numberplate in particular.Just the thing you would expect to see in the pits of a small jap drift track. As for the crisp lines, paint the bumpers before you glue them on,Aoshima kits have seperate front and rear bumpers.
The Aoshima kits are right up there with tamiya in quality,so much better than the Fujimi shit.
FLOODY 31,have you ever played around with washes ect to duplicate brake dust, dirt, rust spots ect?

Anyway heres a few more,
my engine bay...hand made airbox, plug leads, oil filter relocator and cooler and catch can still not finished

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/164295.jpg

My mates engine bay...even cut of the belt cover and made tiny little cam gears and timing belt cause he has exposed HKS ones in the real car.

updated version of my mates car in the aoshima kit.

here are some of the ones i have done over the past few years the AE86 has a real stainless steel muffler that my brother has made for about 5 of my jap cars. the AW11 was the second model that i ever made when i was 13 and the TE27 was a two day slap together oh and the big wheels on a the TE 27 are veilside 18" ones off of my s15 that i wrecked.

I really can't help with Australian stores. I find it simpler, easier and often cheaper to buy via credit card from Japan, particularly http://www.hlj.com

Aoshima for AE86 kits and they also make the TE71 kit. Fujimi's AE86 is absolute crap compared to the Aoshima one.

Well....
Aoshima are doing an N2 AE86 kit now. It was limited run and pre-order only, I procured one.
The one I ordered is the Tsuchiya TRD/ORC Levin. They also do an Enkei Levin and Trust Levin.
Should be interesting to see it when it turns up; I ordered it off scant info but its almost double the cost of the regular Aoshima AE86 kit so hopefully its good!

Got a boso TA22 and MA61 XX too. And some Starsharks.
