how did ya get the paint off the rear bumper? or did u just spray paint it? also were the headlights hard to do?

driftae86
23rd April 2006, 04:26 AM
just sprayed over the bumper with bumper primer. might go over it with proper paint at some point but cbf right now.

with the headlights i used the normal ae71 headlight brackets with some custom extensions i made up, seemed to work.

there was alot of cable ties involved and i got a bit gung ho with the jigsaw....but it turned out ok http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif just got to fix a couple of things and make a chin spoiler and then the exterior is done http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

looks heaps better! how did u secure the lights? is, it just using the original celica backing, also r the lights diffent sizes slighty or is it just me? also did the lights plugs already fit the celica plugs? or did u have to rewire?

Course_Out
4th May 2006, 02:42 PM
Looks unreal mate, very impressive! How hard was it to swap to the ke front? Was it just panels or do bits and peices underneath need to be modded?

driftae86
4th May 2006, 02:45 PM
the lights came attached to the flat celica brackets i just made some angles to fit to the car.

to swap the panels is a pretty straight forward job. need to muscle a couple of bits to make them fit though http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif maybe the car is bent or something http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

also forgot to add that i put the ae86 rear end in the car with lsd.

thanks for the comments

dori_86
4th May 2006, 02:47 PM
also did u just paint over the pinstriping that normally goes down the side?

driftae86
4th May 2006, 02:53 PM
pin striping was gone when i got the car.

the rubber stripes are still on the ke panels, havent got around to removing them yet

driftae86
4th May 2006, 04:40 PM
also to answer your first question dori - the headlight uses same plug as ae71 lights, so i just plugged them in. however the park lights (2 inside round lights) need a separate plug and rewire as there is nothing like that on the ae71 loom. havent got around to doing that yet

the next changes will be the addition of more braces and put the coilovers in the front so that it is ready for the track day.

hope you guys like it....beacause i am absolutely rapped :P

Sorry to go off topic but are you the bloke with the onevia with gold front panels? I'm the one with the 4age KE70 that was racing that night at the plex. How's you mate's car coming along?

pics:

i used acrylic paint exactly like the way i sprayed the ae86 so at the moment it looks kinda matte (sp?) and dodge, but after a couple of weeks ill cut it back and hopefully it will come out shiny.

up until now only 2 globes from the ta22 headlights were wired up, due to the fact that the 2 headlights (2 outside globes) share the same plugs as the ae71 lights. the parklights (2 inner lights) were not wired up until tonight. i kinda made a bridge from the existing parklight plugs on the ae71 loom to reach over to where the 2 inner lights are.

........im not sure if any of that made sense......basically i now have 4 working headlights, here's a pic:

car went for its first drift practice last night.

car was good, but i was using 195 width tyres on the rear, so it was a bit harder to slide than the 13 inch stockers i used with the ae86 http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

just gotta work on my driving and it should be good.

i dont have any track pics but ill put up some more normal pics soon. the rear is lower now as i put in some trd 5kg springs for extra stiffness. and the back seat exited the vehicle aswell.

driftae86
4th June 2006, 08:34 PM
this is how low the rear is now with the trd springs. this is with the brake cookers on the rear also, they are the tyres i used on the track. and the rear interior, mounted extinguisher on the tunnel and took seats out. and yes i havent painted everything black yet :P

what pics do you want v-tec

i made this today. tried to copy the jap te71's. i think it turned out quite well for a trial and error home job :P

i know some of the te71 bumpers are full chrome, but there are others with this much metal and rubber ends. which was the more practical version to copy.

i even moved the indicators for extra authenticity ;)

ive only done the front. ill have a go at making the rear one tomorrow

what do you guys think?

ill have a go at polishing it up soon too as the metal is pretty second hand :P

guards bolted on with no real issues,

ta22 lights...outer sides, used ae71 headlight bracket, i think one of the holes lined up :P, inner side used bent bits of metal to hold them on.

updates.....some of you may know that i actually sold this car to a mate of mine.

driftae86
2nd January 2007, 05:03 PM
ok ive been asked quite a few times about how to do the bumper trick. so to save people asking me, this is how i did it:

first i took the bumpers off the car. i undid the bolts that you can find in the engine bay and also the ones in the boot.

next i separated the black plastic from the metal supports. there are lots of little tabs u can see when looking at the reverse side of the bumpers, which hold them onto the metal. just twist them off or whatever u need to do to get the plastic off.

then i got rid of the metal supports because you cant use them with the trimmed down bumpers.

once the black plastic was separated i had a look at them, lined them up on car, then decided how much to trim off. on the rear u need to get rid of the numberplate light. so i used that as a guide as to how much to cut off. on the front i just guessed how much i wanted to cut off. i had to rush the front so i think i cut too much off it. ended up a bit thinner than i wanted it to be, but oh well http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

i just used a jigsaw to trim the bumpers down to size. pretty quick and easy to use.

once i trimmed them to size i drilled some small holes in the body and also in the bumpers, then used cable ties to hold the bumpers on. i also used cable ties to hold the front indicators on.

dont rush it, and remember u can always cut off more, you cant put more plastic on if u cut too much off http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

and just be aware that once u do this the bumpers have almost no function if u run into something. but its a cheap and easy way to get rid of the standard park benches.

i got the idea from gilly's old ke70 so dont give me the credit for the idea. here's a couple of pics of his old car that i used to get an idea of how much to cut off:

also, i cant give you guys any close up pics of the headlight install cos i dont own the car anymore. but its pretty simple. if u end up getting some of the lights like the ones i used on this car, just get some metal that u think is strong enough to hold the weight of the lights. then bend it as much as u need to get the headlights in the right position. find a hole in the radiator support that u can bolt your custom bracket to then away you go. just use your imagination and go for it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

probly not a good idea to rush this job aswell. because it pays to have headlights that actually shine onto the road rather than up into the sky http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif
