Wanna post up the specs. Yiar i know the pics are self explainatory but we want specs http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

sr_rolla
22nd April 2006, 09:53 PM
No, you dont see rust http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif that stuff in the boot is the backing from that crappy lining that KE70's have in the boot, this car has no rust & had only done 104500kms when I bought it http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif

About the write up, I havent got any progress photos but I'll do a write up on everything I did, parts used, etc. Just give me a couple of days cause I just moved house and I gotta find the book I made up with all the specs. I will do it but.

Also, doin some more mods in the next few weeks so stay tuned.

Good stuff , funny how you have managed to escape the nissan engine in a toyota conflict so far .

Vibration is at a speed or just thought revs even with the car stoped ?

Hardie Spicer http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/rolleyes.gif i am guessing that you tailshaft is about 1.1m due to the small housing diff
Most companys have huge troubles with tailshaft in one piece passed the 1.0m mark , that company has had huge problems in the passed with the corvette and truck shafts supplied into the states . Something like a 80% fault rate http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif So you might want a local truck tailshaft person to have a look at its balance .

Also you have used rotary engine mounts on a 4 cylinder , a rotary doesn't have the harmonic vibrations of a 2 litre engine . The original nissan engine mounts are soft for a reason . Swap you toyota ones back in as a test . The series 2-3 rx7 work but are very hard for the sr due to the weight proberly being lighter on your late n/a model engine .

Just a question how does the pedal feel with the 15/16 master to the 38 / 40 mm piston hilux brakes ? or are they the 38/42 or 100 series 42/44 ?

Nice setup... I've never seen that colour in a ke70.

Good to see someone going to the SR route, not that there's anything wrong with a 4age. No doubt you considered that option, what made you go the SR? How is it for weight compared to the 4age? Probably doesn't matter, those vvt ones put out a tad more than your average 86kw bigport.

Not sure on measurements but the brakes are LN106 Hilux and all the pots are were the same size when I rebuilt them, They feel great with the 15/16 master, a little touchier than standard but not touchy to the point of some cars (holden rodeo).
The vibration is suspension related or possibly tailshaft related because I know that the shaft is a bit out since its been smacking the floor (dont ask...). It cant be the engine mounts because
A) there is some vibration from the motor, but it coresponds with the revs and the vibration im talking about comes through the steering wheel and happens between 80 and 130.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif Ive had the same vibration in all the Toyotas Ive owned over the past 7 years (3 KE70's, T-18, Corona, AE86, Dads KE70 Van & my bosses old hilux).

Also, the reason I used RX7 mounts was because they are half the thickness of SR ones so the SR ones wont fit anymore...

As im sure you'll understand, I am really getting sick of this friggin steering wheel shake http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/rant.gif

The reasons I went with the SR is,
$1350 for engine & gearbox
makes roughly the same power, standard as a 4AGZE but at 1000 RPM less
More torque (I think) at less RPM
Less plumbing (intercooler etc)
Plenty of aftermarket support
every man and his dog has a twincam, no offence ment to anybody

Size wise, i recon the SR would be about 100mm or so taller, 50mm or so longer, and about 50-100mm wider than a 4AGE, probably about 10-15 kgs heavier, so about the same as a complete 4AGZE I recon.

Put the chrome rear bar on today, hopfully I'll have the front done tomorrow http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif

Do the front wheels sit on the hubs ? i see some spacers there maybe the wheels aren't running centred ?, shimming is a vibration in the front end that can also be caused by forward and rear movement due to high amounts of caster . It a big problem in early bmw's , and i have those noltec caster bushes too and there bind big time not taking the forward and reward movement of the wheel going over small bumps that the pin toyota set up is designed for . I adjusted the crush by making the tube longer so adding some softness to the caster arm and car felt much better .
So you can fit rx7 mounts well the stock ones toyota ones will go back there now .

AE86GT
24th April 2006, 10:20 PM
its a non turbo sr20 right?

sr_rolla
25th April 2006, 11:54 PM
yeah, non-turbo

Yes the wheels sit on the hubs, theyre only 5mm spacers, No the rolla engine mounts dont fit anymore, the RX7 ones are about 20-25mm thick so not much else fits anymore,
You sound like you know a bit about toyotas improvedae86, so tell me what you recon would make the most sense as a vibration source,
steering rack ends
tie rods
steering rack mount rubbers
steering column unis
steering column bearings
wheels
these are the only things left that are original because everything else has been replaced or repaired.

bear in mind that every one of the toyotas ive owned has had this problem so my thinking suggests that it has to be a part that is original toyota and is in all the cars listed previous, and the car had the vibration before i modified it and it hasnt got any better or worse, the only thing that made a slight difference was the adjustable strut tops. I think thats just because there solid with a sperical bearing, so I dont think they made the vibration worse, its just that you can feel it more now. Also, the shake goes away when you turn, so it only shakes when youre going straight.
Hopefully I'll be getting new wheels in the next week or 2 so I'll be able to see if thats the cause or not http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/huh.gif

Also do you know anybody who stocks the steering column unis and rubbers?

shift_rook
26th April 2006, 02:59 AM
I would start with the caster arm bushes as if these are too hard , or binding , or worn the osolations of the wheel forward and back will be transfered into the strut and onto the steering . If you do a search of this occuring at the speed you are talking about you will see that early bmw's suffered from this from new . The bushing they used was too soft , and going to hard also doesn't fix the problem . The unis are available new as i think snake on this forum just got some , so are the steering rack bushes that alos might be very soft to after a life or a leaking toyota engine over them .

sr_rolla
26th April 2006, 09:01 PM
How do I check if the caster bushes are a problem, I mean ive got new noltec ones in there now?

shift_rook
26th April 2006, 10:17 PM
How do I check if the caster bushes are a problem, I mean ive got new noltec ones in there now?[/b]

I had new noltec ones too , i thought the crush of the bushing was way too much and really made the joint bind thought the movement as the wheel travels . Remember the wheel also travels forward and back direction to , this is the attended design to stop jolting forces being transmitted into the mac strut . I made the crush tube longer to soften the bushing in the moverment plane .

sr_rolla
26th April 2006, 10:30 PM
I recon I'll give it a go, if it doesnt work, I'll convert it to rose joints ala silvia drift style http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif
how much did you lengthen the crush tubes by?

how much did you lengthen the crush tubes by?[/b]

Want much , i just had them about 5mm longer and get pulling them out and grinding a bit more off them till they felt like there was movement . Not just a huge squeaking noise as the bush distorted try to move as i jacked the strut up and down thought its full travel . Also the bush twists as this is occuring , so you can imagine the force if it binding badly .

the coilovers work extremely well, they are so much better than the original setup its like chalk and cheese, and thats with the cheap & nasty coilovers I got for $50 so it should be heaps better when I get some good ones under there. At the moment the spring rates are wrong, its got prgressive 350lbs springs in the front and god knows what in the rear, all i know is there not progressive and less than 200lbs. The damper part is stuffed to so it can only get better. Im thinkin of gettin ohlins, bilstien, koni, or tien front and rear coilovers soon but i gotta get some work so I can pay for said goodies http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/rolleyes.gif . Besides i got plenty of other work to do on it before i have to shell out any more money (strut brace, splash tray under the front, paint, trim, flare gaurds properly, modify and fit new front inner gaurds and a few more braces here and there). Hopefully it will look less crappy and have all the suspension sorted by christmas as well as all the bracing that i want done plus i want to redo the brakes and get some braided lines etc.

By next chrismas i want the diff done (TRD 2way lsd, custom axles and rear disks http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif ) the G/Box done (RB20 box) and have the motor rebuilt and turboed (I want about 250 reliable rear wheel KW's), and have all the trim and paint properly sorted.

should be a sweet ride when its done tho http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif

but the Question still remains, what colour to paint it, same blue it is or close, white, black or vitamin C orange...

will keep everyone posted on my progress http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif

Hey, just a question.
If you were to put in a flywheel, would you use the S14 one or an S13 turbo one? due to motor engine differences.
and why did you use the S13 turbo box?

apparently, RWD SR20's only came out with 2 different fly wheels, 225mm & 240mm, i've got the225mm so i cant get any decent twin plate clutches for it and this apllies to S13, S14 & S15

the reason i went the S13 turbo box was because they had no S14 boxes and i was unaware that the RB20 box could b made to fit

To build an SR20 thats reliable to 250rwkw costs ALOT of money.

Simply put.

180-200rwkw can be done but its still pretty expensive and if you try to cut corners you'll be rebuilding pretty quickly too.

sr_rolla
4th June 2006, 08:45 PM
I know that it costs money to build a good SR, but i built this car to eventually demoralise most street registered cars and ultimately, thats what i plan to do...
and after talking to a few engine builders (pa's mates) that have been building performance motors for more years than I've been on this planet, i can safely say that most people spend way to much money on brand names instead of well researched products and info.

for example:
if im building an SR to make 200-250rwkw, why do i need HKS, Tomei, Jun etc components, when there are several australian companies that make cams, rods, pistons etc that are used in several forms of motorsport and have proven to be plenty tough for what i want to do.

Not only that, but they're half the price.

im not building a drag motor so I dont need massive internals, i want a motor that leans more towards torque and drivability, not outright power, similar to a rally motor (higher compression, less boost)

me and my dad will most likely be rebuilding it ourselves because in the past we have found that the best way 2 do something is to take the time to do it yourself, not pay someone mega dollars 2 do a half assed job http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/cool.gif

P.S. I know that several people will probably disagree with me on this but this is my opinion and i am only posting it up to help guide others if they wish to follow my path, so if you dont agree, please dont bombard this post with abuse http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif

thanx man,

its not that expensive 2 do it, it took me about $100 (that includes steel, grinding disks, coilovers, nuts, bolts and paint) and 4 days to do the rear of mine, the only think 2 really remember is to build in about 2-4" of droop in the system from your ride hieght. I used cheap and nasty coilovers that cost $50 from SSS, so that part wasnt dear, i would suggest using shitty ones 1st so u dont accidentally stuff good ones. Then after you've done this, all you have to do is save up 4 a set of decent coilovers later down the track.

When i get some money again (stupid unemployment http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/rant.gif ) I'll be getting some new rear springs coz the ones that came with the coilovers are waaaay 2 stiff, when i work out a good rate, i'll post it up here to save u anybody who wishes to do this the hassle http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif

sr_rolla
6th June 2006, 11:43 PM
to stiff, not bad for drifting but shithouse for genral road & track use, not sure what it is in KG's but about 350lbs front & 180lbs or so in the rear is about right, i got those numbers off a circuit car in nz. He had 200lbs in the rear but i tried that & it was a bit much so im gonna drop it down a bit for the coilovers.
If anybody has any questions, dont hesitate 2 ask and i will try 2 answer them 2 the best of my ability http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/2thumbs.gif

Fuel System:
Custom 5/16 steel fuel lines under car
twin VL pumps
VL in tank Pump
Custom surge tank
Mitsibishi unleaded filler neck

i notice you are running 3 pumps. which pump is being used as the lifter pump. and why are you using 2 pumps to feed the engine?

this is the stage i am up to with mine, sorting out a fuel system.

I used 2 VL external pumps 1st off because I had them and then put the VL in tank pump in as a lifter because I kept shitting fuel pumps, and the way its currently set up, 1 external pump feeds the surge tank, 1 feeds the motor, and the lift pump in the tank feeds the 1st external pump. I know its overkill but im not likely to run out of fuel in a hurry http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

that sounds like a very decent setup. another question, does yours run a speedo? if it does can the ke70 cable be used, maybe with an adapter or something?

sr_rolla
11th June 2006, 06:42 PM
no, to much stuffin around to bother with a mechanical speedo, i just put a VDO electronic speedo in the KE70 dash cluster, saved a heap of stuffin around with ratio boxes etc, and i can just reset it if i get different wheels, diff ratios etc

hey man, ive got an early ke bonnet if ya want it. A 6 pack will do if you pick it up, only shes a lil rusty http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

Oh, and is it possible to remove the sturt tops on the rear coilovers? As in make your own to fit in the stock shock towers? Different brand perhaps?

sr_rolla
11th June 2006, 09:23 PM
you could, but the reason i did this was so i could get S13 silvia bits off the shelf and bolt them in with no mods. At the moment it would prolly take about 20mins to change rear coilovers.

And thanks for the offer on the bonnet but i live in central NSW so driving 2 noosa for a KE70 bonnet is not my idea of fun, thanks anyway but.

well the rears are s13 sizes so that end is easy, but i need to know the extended and compressed lengths of the damper (not including mounting bracketry) that comes as standard for the front end of an S13 mono flex setup.

I don't understand the red links with the wholes in them? they don't seem to replace the standard lower arms so what are they

fark me.. you don't mess around do ya? One seriouslt well built ke...

Please don't use bonnet spacers... Hot air doesnt escape, it gets sucked in....

sr_rolla
23rd February 2008, 09:49 PM
i can't see how hot air would get sucked in? maybe cold air sucked in as opposed to hot getting sucked out? many factory cars and race cars have followed this idea (a9x, slr5000/l34, xu1 race cars, walkinshaws etc.) what makes you say that it doesnt work?

the red links with the holes are swaybar arms, the holes are for adjustability near the ends and probably to have less weight or to provide more flex in the rest of the arms, this idea is kinda half way between standard adjustable sway bars and full blade type adjustable sway bars as found on V8 supercars and such. The blade system is great for adjustability but to easy to break so this is a good second. The under car pics of the white car is of the john smith bathurst trd race car

got my quad head lights :2thumbs: wont be goin in till i get my phat JDM front lip (yo  ) from gilly, should look quite the goods with a new lip, quads and flat black with a yokohama sticker across said lip :2thumbs:

some of you may have notice that the only wank factor sticker on the car is said yoki sticker, well if the older of you will remember back to a bad 80's movie called canonball fever with john candy in it. There's a red lamborgini countach that skips across a pond like a stone and the dude driving it has a spare rear wing on his lap at the time, well that car has a tyre sticker across the front lip, thats my inspiration  incredibley lame i know, but thats my story and I'm stickin 2 it :2thumbs:

That front end looks really nice. Do you have any more pics especially the steering knuckle and balljoint setup? If you put that setup in your car you will be unstoppable! Your sure the car owner knows your sharing the pics haha ;)

cheers

That movie was classic!

Uninterested kid learning how to skip stones with grandpa, lol, "what was that about angles?"

As good a reason as any for wanting to make a mod, good on you, keep it up.

Was it a spare wing on his lap or the original wing off the lambo that he ripped off because he didn't like it........

munki: don't know if he know I'm using his pics or not but he posted them up on ae86dc about 2 years ago, if hes still on here he probably spends most of his time in the motorsport section  i can't remember his name but I'm pretty sure improvedAE86 knows who he is.

Toy-Yoda: dunno, the main thing is he has a wing in his lap

Right, i finally decided to get off my arse with this thing, 2 trips on bad country rds has made the decision for me. The front lip and quad light are gonna have to wait for a while, hopefully I'm ordering some new koni sports mr2 inserts in the next few weeks and then I'm gonna be making up some new coilovers front and rear with some new springs to get rid of the shitty kings progressives that ive got at the moment. If time permits, I'm going to setup an equal length four link setup in the rear also.

Watch this space, I'm going to do a proper write up on the struts and four link setup. :2thumbs:
