Hey I just thought I would do a rewrite up of my weekend project

SECTION 1 ---- Fixing the bumper
SECTION 2 ---- Making the Front Lip
SECTION 3 ---- Painting

SECTION 1 ---- Fixing the bumper

This is the stock bumper, which I got for $40 -cheers ae86dave

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/1082/10002182qn.jpg

There was some over spray on the indicators so I just used a bit of turps (Mineral Turpentine) to clean up but I didn't work all that well so I turned to using 800 grit wet and dry sand paper.

http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/6451/10002242fv.jpg

I sanded them with a bit of water, I will later spray these will clear coat to give back the original look, u can buy some special stuff to make ur lights shiny again but cost more than a can of clear coat spray paint http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

With the bumper I sanded the whole bumper with wet and dry 800 git paper but i didn't use any water as the bumper is rough surface anyways so un less it is smooth i would suggest not using water.

http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/958/10002275zr.jpg

The bits on the inside of the bumper had been hacked off with a hacksaw. So they were sticking out a bit, so to get them flush with the rest of the bumper, I first used a hacksaw with an adjustable angle to help get closer to the bumper, then I used a metal file, then some low grit sand paper **cant remember but it was very rough** http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif, I then preceded to use 800 grit sand paper to get a smoother finish

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/2540/10002302zq.jpg

My bumper had been in a previous battle with an unknown object so it was “dented in" and ripped to fix this I used two flat head screwdriver to pull the split outwards (if that makes sense?) I then use a Stanley knife to cut off the little “dags" of plastic and then sanded them I then pushed the split together to create a flat surface on the front.

I then used some gap filler/tile filler (cant remember what one it was but it was just some I had lying around in the shed) this was purely put on to give it some additional strength.

SECTION 2 --- Making the Front Lip

I went down to the local hardware shop (Bunnings) to purchase some lawn edging. I bought the 100mm high edge

NOTE
I'm not sure if this sized edge will scrub on lower cars as I haven't put it on my car yet and I have king spring which will be OK but I'm unsure if it will be OK when I put my new coilovers in http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/1310/10002373gt.jpg

I also bought some fancy black pop rivet to use but they didn't come in a big enough size and as I didn't want to used galvanised ones, I bought some self tapping metal screws (remember not to buy wood ones as they would probably be to harsh and could possibly tear ur bumper!)

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/101397.jpg

After buying all this stuff I decided to trial fit it to my car using simple electrical tape, I cut the lawn edge into I think a size of roughly 190cm but don't quote me as I'm guessing from memory.

http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/466/10002447ne.jpg
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/6691/10002466pu.jpg

This is my attempt with pop rivet but the weren't strong enough to deal with the pressure of the bending at the edge of the bar because they were too small

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/101400.jpg

This is about ¾ of the screw process

http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/7623/10002511ow.jpg

NOTE
Remember to drill wholes first which r smaller than the screws u are putting in!

HIGLY RECOMMENDED

You may also have to make backing plates for the screw to screw into, just to give it some extra strength, I just used some scrap thin sheet metal which I cut into little rectangles which I then drilled holes into them. On a side note I did this after screwing the to pieces on plastic together and the realising it probably wasn't strong enough

SECTION 3 ---- Painting

To do the painting of the bumper I used 800 grit wet & dry sandpaper but didn't use any water, as it is a rough surfaced bumper anyway.

I purchase some special “Bumper Bar Primer" and “Bumper Bar Black Paint" as it contains a special product to help with the flexible nature of the Bumper Bar

First Coat of Primer
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/6297/10002575yg.jpg

Second Coat
http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/6721/10002601pb.jpg

I'm yet to finish doing the coats of paint as I'm writing this up while I'm waiting for each coat to dry http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

I will post more pics when done

do both those bumper paints come in aerosol cans?

dori_86
30th April 2006, 07:24 PM
yeah they do ill post pics of them either tonight or tomorrow, but i just went down to supercheap and bought what ever they had i think it was like $12 each can but there 450g or 500g cans, i did 2 coats of primer and still some left over in the can and i've only done 1 coat with the normal paint so far so i'll c how many i can get out of that doing heaps of light coats

dori_86
30th April 2006, 08:52 PM
painting may b a while as it has started to get cold here, so its not to great painting weather so it may take a while to dry properly! so i can rub it back between coats

wow that really looks neat man.. lawn edger woulda never thought of that.. are u doing the same thing on ur rear bar

dori_86
30th April 2006, 09:28 PM
yeah lawn edging is good cos it UV light protected so wont fade easily, it's plastic so it durable plus it can bend with out breaking shatering.

i have been thinking about the rear bumper but i'll have to wait and c as i used 10cm high lawn edge which looks good when i did a mock up on my car but it only has kingsprings in it

so it may be too low when i put my coilovers in so i think i might wait, plus i dont have a spare bumper to work on and i also think it could look a bit weird with have a lip on the front and rear without any side skirts! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

i may use something like 50mm (5cm) edging next time if its too low at the moment

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

man think i should stop sniffin the spray cans or worn a dusk mask cos i just when to blow my nose and it was black http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/ohmy.gif

sorry for the late reply as my broadband was fcuked last night so i could even reply or post pics!

i must admit this wasnt my idea, i had been thinking about doing this for aghes tho but was unsure of what materials to us as a lip i was think of a bit of bent sheet metal carefully bent on i think it's called a "bender" in the uni workshop but figure it to be too difficult so i started to think about using somethin like a rubber seal as it heaps flexible but i couldnt fin any in the right shape.

anyway...

heres the spray paint i used with the bumper in the background after first coat of paint, the brand is SEPTONE and the cans are "Bumper Primer" and "Bumper Bar Black" for all those people who cant see the pics straight away.

indicators r still needing to be clear coated over, but they can wait 4 a while http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

its pretty close to the ground, as i was reversing out of the drive way it carried stacks of gravel on to the road, so ican only enter or leave the drive way front wards http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

im now pretty sure i will have to get a smaller lip when i put my coilovers in http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif

dori_86, do u have any ideas how to make the gap smaller between ur bumper and the pakres/guards(in pic 2)?

Nice write up, keep going mate! And a guide for taking out the front bumper will be nice!

Cheers

dori_86

not sure on how to get a smaller gap but im guessing the gap would be smaller normally, but my bumper bar brackets (the thing that holds ur bumper on in position) are bent and sh!t so i sort of had to force it on http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/laugh.gif http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

to take ur bumper off theres 2 ways and one is a hell of a lot easier...

un bolt the bolt lacated at:

side of bumper at top -both sides
side of bumper bottom -both side
big ass bolt under ur (front) indicators

then theres a tricky nut and bolt to get to which if u look at you bumper the only thing holding it on is it the bolt runs down thru the piece holding the bumper on just use a socket and wrench to get it off, so it stops u from sitting ther for ages undoun the bolt but in fact its just twirlyn the nut & bolt

once this is undone

MAKE SURE U UNDO / UNCLIP UR FORNT INDICATORS!!

b4 u rip it off or u will have a fun time re soldering tabs to the wires!!

done!

the bumper bracket will now be attached to ur bumper it shoul be fairly straight forward to c that all u have to do is unscrew these to take off the bracket to get to your indicators

but if ur only wanting to get ur indicators off the refreshn them then just unscrew from the front with out having to take ur whole bumper off, but if ur painting the bumper u will have to remove the indicators to get a better paint finish

i'm going to have to claim the discovery of the bunnings edging spoiler!!!

yours looks a shit load better though!! nice one! give it a week in the sun and it will be moulded to your front bar then you can rivet it.

if any one in brissy wants any of this stuff i have about 4 metres left.

heres some pics in daylight, the "un-even-ness" of the paint isnt the paint just the water from the rain just in case some1 was wondering

also it looks lower as the car is sitting on a flat surface then the gravel is raised up so it decieving

how much did u sand the bumpers? im looking at painting my bumpers black and unsure how much to sand. my bumpers are in good condition with good paint...

dori_86
25th March 2007, 11:45 PM
all i can say is dont sand too much, cos then it will end up being "flat" as in no texture, edging is cheap as but u get HEAPS of it, u cant see pics cos i used image shack/forum and after a while they disapear for some reason

any ways here some pics later on, i have taken it off my car, i did this when i installed my coilovers as it was already scraping on stuff with king springs, but i think the edging was 80mm or somethin so it was BIG, mayb try it with a smaller size edging for a better result or trim it down

Did you sand the edging back???
I could only find Septone Plastic Surface Adhesion paint which says is good to use on plastic bumpers.
