lol should last a while thos 4ac's are strong as anything haha

RobertoX
25th May 2006, 02:01 PM
yeah, it took 2 days to get running, no fucking around

it is a 'j-pipe' turbo set up (off the bottom of the headers, no turbo manifold here!)

it is running a hitachi turbo off a late cosmo (1 of the 2 off the cosmo)

it runs a 3 inch exhaust stopping before the diff

and a sigma zenith carby

it is suck through and it is VERY responsive

it is still pinging up the very top, but a few litres of sunoco 120octane should fix that ($7 a litre)

the car has been totally transformed, and now throttle slides so easily

stripping the interior etc today, rigging up an air filter and a larger radiator and she should be sweet

i have 2 spare motors, and if it blows a headgasket it will get a copper one made up, but should be reliable on 8psi

cant wait for the weekend!!!11111

the car owes me

$1000 car
$1000 susp
$100 steering
$200 wheels
$600 turbo kit

pics soon!

RobertoX
26th May 2006, 01:52 PM
thanks for the support guys

we finally hooked a boost guage up to work out why it was pinging high in the revs it was running 20psi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

the boost kept rising through the rev range,

obviously a 4ac isnt going to last long on 20psi so...

it was driving like a bit of a pig, as it had all of its timing taken out of it, but massive boost...

it is now running 10psi max, and lots more timing, no more pinging, and so much smoother and drivable

as for big port vs this - big port would be left well and truly for dead, it would be at least as quick as a super charged car and damn near as responsive

guards are being flared atm, sound deadner straight after then wheel alignment

see you out there, come say hi!!111

i was overheating bad, so i upgraded

the tyres are 185/60/14s all round at the moment

althought they also see 185/55/14 and 175/60,

im seriously considering 15s on the front

RobertoX
19th June 2006, 01:25 PM
heaps of work done during the week, all is sweet

got the air filter on, all the oil plugs are wired to the body, put my jdm tyt3 fender mirrors on for a wank, bucket seat, some more interior stripping

once again big ups to mark at madaz for his professional work!

i took it out to mallala on the weekend (grip day thing), great fun, even more so that drift

the brakes held up well but i will be putting slotted and vented rotors on it at some stage

it also needs some more neg camber, but everything else felt good, cant wait to get a cage tho!

it did a 1.33.16 (old semi slicks on front and old street tyres on rear and 0.4 bar of boost) around mallala, not happy with that until i get 1.29.99, which i should be able to do no worries on the new motor, and a few susp tweaks (very twitchy drift set up)

the motor is still running strong but it is blowing some smoke

UPDATE: as it is blowing a bit of smoke and is down on compression on 3rd cylinder

we are going to rebuild it before G1 so it doesnt let us down...

rebuild as follows:

ACL pistons and rings +1mm
ACL/Monotorque head gasket (stock size to retain comp)
New bearings
Maybe a new stud kit

and to keep with the ghetto theme

cam regrind
dremel head port

0.8 bar of boost. with a nice broad torquey power band

Hey Dave outta interest, how did the brakes hold up at Mallala. You get fade after a few laps?

1'33's not bad out there dude....was out there on the weekend with a mate who was in the 6hr thingo. He's got a fairly worked Dat 1600 that run a 1'29 on cut slicks so the 1'33 is pretty respectable on that kind of budget and tyres etc.

Any idea how much hp the engines prob making? Had it up against a 4age yet?

pros:

good power
awesome torque
responsive
really cheap power
people think your car is cool
you can wheel spin in 3rd gear
you can laugh at people with 4age's
it can be running in 2 days
its not even that loud with a 3 inch
cons:

fuel consumption goes up
illegal
ghetto
stuff can start breaking now you are making some actual power figures
pig down low
you want to speed cos you can lol

so basically keep it on boost and you will love it

Sweet...

Just the fact that it can be done in a couple of days is awesome...

What's it like with detonation etc? Being draw thru you couldn't run an intercooler, (yes?). Would you need one anyway on lowish boost?

Why would it be illegal Dave? Sigma turb's run pretty much an identical setup from stock don't they? Surely you could get it thru regency with the right brakes etc....

*copy pasted from toymods*

as for my car

we took it out at 9pm tonight

and it was running like SHIT! seemed to be fueling up and other ghey things...

but we fiddled around, and then a spring on the carby snapped....

and it started running PERFECTLY, couldnt be happier, so linear etc

and we managed to knock off 300kms of the 1000kms

things are looking up!

it is now LEGALLY registered, just waiting on the correct number plates (FKN plate theives)

my new engine mount to replace the snapped one comes in tomorrow

and my cusco front end (rose jointed caster rods, modified caster rod brackets for easy swaybar removal, and a tie rod end brace) have all been ordered, but they wont be here in time for G1...

cant wait!

RobertoX
13th July 2006, 03:42 AM

we are up to over 600kms now

going back to MADAZ tomorrow to replace engine mount, fill it up with torco syntetic oil, and turn boost up to 10psi

do another few hunded kms, and she will be all ready for G1

once again a massive thanks to C1 for his excellent running in skills while some of us dont have licenses

Sweet...what's the good word then? How much rwhp? Got sheets....?

R:)

RobertoX
16th July 2006, 01:06 AM
nope no dyno sheets,

it made 74rwkw (not on power run)

before overfueling and popping (flames)

then leaning out up top and pinging its arse apart...

SO....

we gathered all the info we learned from the dyno

and then

put new plugs in and reset the gap (big big improvement)

new points reset the gap

upped the boost to 0.8

retarded the timing ever so slightly after about 1 hour of street tune (made adjustment go drive etc..)

then we added another fuel pump, an electric facet, this was the BIGGEST improvement

this added so much more power up top it was like a different car, instead of coming on boost and 'plateau-ing out' its now pulls hard well past 6,000rpm

it was fucking flying at this stage on pump 98, started running a fuck load smoother and more econmically....

i would say it is making at least 100rwkw in our 'safe tune'

rarely pops now, and we have basically moved the power curve higher into the rev range to better suit drift etc

everything seems to be holding together well...

packing to car now.. then up for a 5:30 am start for mallala

see you all out there!

what a fucking weekend!!!! shit fuck lol!!

time line

monday: brand new block goes in
tuesday: pick up car and run in 300kms done
wednesday: purchase and replace d/s engine mount another 300kms
thursday: back to workshop for oil change, filled with torco that night another 250kms
friday: got tyres ready bought a couple of parts did another 180kms
saturday: put it on the dyno coughed splutterd spattered pinged! took the results and then we and changed and re gapped plugs, points, checked dizzy, added and elec fuel pump turned boost up to 0.9 bleeding to 0.8 bar adjusted timing!!! car was fucking FLYING so so fast...i would say a FLAT 14! pulled a car length on an RX8! did another 150 kms

so the car was run in and going fucking hard....

sunday: get up 5:30 am...head to G1 drift comp..., go to warm up, bang 3rd gear, tyres smoking me smiling.. oh shit Jpipe to turbo gasket is blown...resulting in no power!!! also a coolant leak causing my car to get hot!
quick fix is attempted...failed!

somehow i manage to still qualify....

but there was no point going in the battles with such little power...

so i called on Clem Smith (track owner) who pulled the welder (last ditch effort) out for me...

it took too long getting repaired that i missed my battle, went out for some wet slides in the team drift for the LOL factor...and then went home, broke, cold and tired with a slow car....

the end!

ps. some snazzy cusco bits for the front end just rocked up FTW... i will updated when they get in stalled!

i WOULD of gone 4.1, but you see a 4a-c doesnt like revving past 6000, so down the back straight at mallala it is on 5700, so i thought a 3.7 would be good, i was wrong, 3.9 going in next week

when i 4agte i will 4.1 http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

thats fricken awesome

if you build another 4ac you should just balance the bottom end, it might add that little bit of strength your looking for.

That's nuts. At what boost?....rpm? Sheets or ban......

Javal
29th August 2006, 05:16 PM
The car needs an actuator to retard (?) the ignition as boost goes up so he can crank more timing out down low and, and overall make more power. unfortunatley these require fair bit of time to set up. and as we all know, time is directly proportionate to cubic dollars.

And this is lawson we're talking about http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

As said before, he is going 4AGTE in a few months.
Javal.

ArJay

Aye Dave why you going 4agte?

Surely that's making enough power for you now...is it a reliability thing or are you hoping for more smoke plumige?

RobertoX
31st August 2006, 03:19 PM
nar, i want more revs and more reliability, i want to get under 1.25 at mallala, it did a 1.29 on like 4psi with aus spec brakes, so yeah...

RobertoX

Call me both...but you give us some examples of fresh rebuilt engines making 100 rwkw for $1K that you can bolt into my AE71 straight swap...

ArJay
4th September 2006, 12:19 PM
id rather small port 4ag with some carbs

but each to your own[/b]

True to each his own but that thing will hand a carbed smallport it's own arse. Carbed smallports are like hens teeth and building one you'd not have much change left from at least $2.5K after webbers and all the R&D...

Can see your point tho and it's not for everyone. Reliability wise it's no different from any other turbed engine....still blows gearboxes, diffs, and the odd head but 4ac's are like $50 each.... http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Dxaqta - id go a 4act over small port with carbs any day. Sure the occasional head might go but its a hell of alot cheaper and less stressing and at the end of the day youll be driving instead of tuning.

dave - impressive figue there! all up how much money and time does it owe you?

RobertoX

thanks for the kind words

and as for dxaquta, i could arrange to have some hektik motor built, i could get mark yager to build me a motor, BUT the best thing about my car is the fact that it is running and i can drive it the 'conversion' took 2 days and i was thrashing it that night

crazy86
5th September 2006, 10:28 AM
I had a mate with a carbed GE, and while it was a kickass motor, it cost a shiteload in parts and tuning, to get an injected engine to run on carbs, you dont just bolt a carb on and tune it, it takes a fair bit of R n D to find what length trumpets are needed get the kind of flow you want, having the appropriate exhaust etc and so on.

Considering a 4AC can be had for the princely sum of "tree fiddy", or a can of coke, this engine has some good bang for the buck quality. Im not a fan of Turbo's either, and the Dyno does need to be run in 4th, but I still think Lawson has a winner here.

keiichi
5th September 2006, 07:25 PM
so whats the advantage of converting an efi to carb? could you do it to a 22re engine?

RobertoX
5th September 2006, 11:09 PM
yes you could, but for the amount it would cost, NO, unless you wanted to put some junk carby on there and no tune it properly and lose power.....

Bensonius
5th September 2006, 11:46 PM
the problem with going to a 4.1 ratio is that you run out of gears to quickly.....

he is looking for a 3.9 which should make for a happy medium between acceleration and top speed....[/b]

hmm, yeah true but 3.7 equals more stress on the drive line...oh well should be good with the 3.9

RobertoX
6th September 2006, 12:08 AM
