i'm not really concerned.. but my Diff has always made a nice high pitched whine.. like a dog box.. the crownwheel and pinion are lapped together a little closer than normal, to give it a bit more stregth..

i mean, i'm not concerned about it buy any means.. but just want to ask if anyone elses makes this noise? and yes has been rebuilt.. new bearings etc etc.. it is nice and tight and in tip top shape.. diff oil is penrite 10ths competition LSD fluid, and is checked at regular intervals, doesn't leak etc, and gets changed about once every 6 mts minimum.. more often if i can..

i found a video of my mate to drive the car, so i could hear it from outside.. it's actually quite loud! only when accelerating though.. not on decel.. as i said it's perfectly fine driving so i'm not worried about it, but yeh http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

Do you mean that bit that kinda sounds like a turbo spooling? You can hear it clearest right after the gearshift when he hits the gas. I personally never got this kind of sound and i had a TRD 2 way.

Another mate of mine has a 2 way KAAZ that makes something like the sound you're describing but his pinion bearing is rooted. Did they change the pinion bearings as well? They need the single use crush tube to get the clearances correct. Seeing as it only happens on acceleration, i'd be investigating the pinion.

Instead of keeping the crush tube, what i'll be doing is getting a solid spacer machined after the proper clearances have been set with the crush tube. That way if you ever need to rebuild the diff again, you can just tighten the bolt up as hard as possible and be assured to have the correct clearances (assuming you dont change ring/pinion over too). It also eliminates movement through shock loading for those with Ueo style left feet http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif

yeh thats what i was thinking, but the pinion movment is very very minimal, and the carrier bearings and pinion bearing were changed, the diff has been pulled down a few times as i went through many many an axle/ gear set with the GZE, and was always pulled down and rebuilt to make sure no swarf etc got itself into the clutches etc.. but i spose its made the noise ever since the car landed from japan.. just now i have been noticing it more and more, due to the lack of carpet/seats etc etc.. i might be swapping to a set of 4.5 or 4.3 gears (4.1 at the moment) i'll definitly consider this info though Eddie, thanks http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

ohh and the others, thanks http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif you should hear it with the air box off... wow.. heaps of induction noise! http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

I've found my TRD 2 way to be quite quiet.. In fact it doesn't really make any noise.. I had a gear whine (not noticeable from outside i dont think), but that was my ring and pinion which was 20 years old or whatever from a t18 which has all been changed now. New ring and pinion, no whine whatsoever (is that even a word?) .

My kaaz 2-way was quiet,

after installing rosejointed upper and lower arms, i am getting the whine noise on hard acceleration.

noise is normal. straight line noise is related to ring and pinnion/bearings only. lsd centre is not doing anything in a straight line.
