thanks heaps guys.. but ive still got a problem.. i bought a thermostat about a week ago- its the one mattyshop mentioned, but my temperature on the microtech dash climbs to about 90-92deg. and the guage on the cars dash goes upto 3quaters before it cools back down to normal operating temp (80-86 deg.)
I had a cracked overflow bottle dat was leaking coolant- I fixed that
The lower radiator hose was leakin wen it was under pressure- I fixed that
any idea's what it could be??
Thanks heaps,
Danny

Then we just made it on all the time. lol

have you flushed your whole cooling system with some chemicle flush stuff?
what type of coolent are you running?

My 20V runs consistently at about 90-92 deg on the microtech, but the dash guage reads fine (and I replaced the gauge sensor to be sure). You might have a blocked radiator - possibly have a radiator place look at your car, they can probably tell you what is wrong in about 5 mins. If you're worried that it's the thermostat, take it out and run without it and see what happens, you certainly can't hurt it by doing it.

if you run it for ages without a thermostat it can get hotsports etc.. in your motor.. potentially blowing a head gasket.. potentially... http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif

it might even overheat without a thermostate.. unlikly in a 4ag.. but other cars it does..

why will you get hotspots??? only problem running a car without a thermostat is that the engine will run cool not hot. A Thermostat BLOCKS water recirculation when it is closed, only opening when it reaches a certain temperature. I guarantee you can get hotspots by having a stuck thermostat, but removing it, err No. I have run cars without thermostats before, they just run at about 65-70deg engine temp rather than 82-90.

the water take the easyest path.. eg the one with less restriction.. water won't flow around the back of the cooling passages as much as it would normally, and it might not cool the engine efficiently enough as the water doesn't stay in the radiator to cool down befor entering the engine..

try testing ur thermostat?.. get a thermometre, string.. dip it in boiling water or sumfin and c what temp ur thermostat opens?..

Im running some anti-boil anti-freeze coolant, cant remember the exact brand (it was about $25 for 3L)..
what temp should a gze normally run at? and wer on the ae86 gauge should it sit (TEMP)?
thanks again for bustin ur balls,

bout half way on a normal 86 dash.. flush your whoel system with your heater turned on.. with a good quality cooling system flush.. eg nulon...
then after you flush all the old crap out, get a good quality coolant.. most of them nowdays arn't the dodgey cheap shit that corrodes alloy.. just don't mix coolants.. make sure it is actually an anti freeze/anti boil.. and mix at the specified ratio.. most are between 30%-50%... good suggestion is a 4L bottle of Nulon Red long life concentrate.. me personally i use toyota genuine.. have about 20L of the stuff sittin here.. but thats just me.. i'm obsessive/compulsive with servicing and stuff http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/wink.gif plus i get it for free http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/smile.gif
let us know how this goes.. do a decent job of flushing your radiator/engine.. up here in brisbane we can't use a hose... dam drought.. but if i close the garage door... no body knows.. he he he.. http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

you have all forgeotten that the thermost is the main restrictor in the circuit that sets the basic system pressure. many cars without thermostat have negligible pump pressure in the circuit. this CAN result in spots that dont get full or proper water flow, and it is in these places that local hot spots, and even boiling CAN occur. this is a real problem with some engines like Chev V8's.
it is not such a big problem with 4AG's because of the gasket design and water flow path, however, the thermostat is there for this good reason
when you get an electric pump like a davies craig, they come with instructions that tells you how to remove the t'stat and replace it with a restrictor so the pumping pressure remains. on our race cars, we try to get 20-30psi. without a restrictor, the value is more like 2-5psi.
cars that need the thermost removed to run cool, have a problem. cold running engines are ALWAYS down on power.
