So ive now got the whore of a 'rina. According to gil-san im the 6th owner since john imported it. Heres some pics

Rust repair

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/7735/nick1580.jpg (http://img18.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nick1580.jpg)

Bogging, will have to do till i paint it.

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/6800/nick1582.jpg (http://img18.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nick1582.jpg)

What it could look like

http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/2173/post31145331372.jpg (http://img10.imageshack.us/my.php?image=post31145331372.jpg)

Has a lip and wing, so i migth do another lowdown with this. Gotta sort out the rear toe issue for that tho. Paint will probably be white or poo brown as seen on ae71neo's hot 71. Rear guards need chopping tho, so theres a long road to go.

UPDATE 26/1/2010

Ive finally got it sorted (well almost) So hear are the latest specs. Everything from now on will probably just be running mods/repairs.

no motor.
pretty sure the only motor thats been in it in aus was the Sr20 that it got imported with.

Gilly
15th March 2009, 11:52 AM
nah it had a 3TGTE?? whatever it came with stock when it was imported, John skidded it. Adam and Cass bought it as a roller and never got around to getting a motor in it. i bought it off Adam realised i too couldn't do the SR conversion i wanted too so i pretty much pillaged the good bits (S13 front, TRD rear, rims and some other bits) then i sold it off to Daz who SR'd it added RA60 coilovers, deep dish SSR's and then i lost track of it from there , i thought it was complete and driving around somewhere until i got Biggo's pm. hopefully it gets finished off now. wicked platform for a skid car bar the rear end which is tricky. you should endeavor to get in touch with Tim Ottoway or the owner of his old RA60 (orange 1jz item) Tim reworked the sub frame to get a semi decent range of camber, castor correction out of it.

Once again Biggo i love your work!
My mate had one of these in NZ with a 3s in it, turbo and ecu upgrade and it was insanly fast and stuck to the road like shit to a blanket.
Tims probably easier contacted on secretdrift, his user name is his name.
Good luck and i look foward to updates.

Hey daz, theres a few more bits of rust i found, no holes tho thankfully. The pic of the rear window repair was pretty much entirely gone, the ruddy windscreen wasnt even sealing let alone siting on anything.

Gonna grab some more wire today and fix the blow out in the front left corner. Will get a pic guys as its pretty gnarly. The more i look at it it seems that a jack has slipped rather than a wheel coming off. Im sure ill find rust in there to.

Ill add some pics of some gtt sedans tonight.

man dont fuck the rear guards. just fix em.

you can fit massive rims in there NP. hacking it up might be regrettable, it is a rare car here after all.

biggo
18th March 2009, 07:08 AM
guards are fucked, and i dont think i can be bothered fixing them. I dont really want massive wheels in there anyway.

Any ideas on how to fix the rear toe at all? Old mate at work seemed to thing that any welding would crack, but i dunno.

driftke70
18th March 2009, 12:04 PM
on toymods there are some modified arms a fella is selling in pairs that suit ma61, from memory they are almost the same rear end, so you would be able to wind the excessive toe out.

slydar
18th March 2009, 12:33 PM
there is not much you can do.

all toyotas from that era run the same trailing arm style irs.

it pivots at 2 points as you will notice. there is stock toe and camber adjustment, but lowering as far as we like makes it out of range that the stock adjustment car compensate for.

you can either increase the amount of adjustment by modifying the sub frame, or modify the stock arm so that it hold the hub/driveshaft at a closer to stock angle. but your roll center will still be fucked.

i dont know why you care. sif youre gonna daily it. the camber looks cool. the toe, meh.

you buy these cars with the realisation that the rear end is a bit shit, and live with it.

or mod it if you can be bothered, but it depends if its worth the effort to you. id have thought the answer to that, would be a no. it could be a lot of effort, and the roll center is still below the ground. that said, tim did report noticeable improvements when he modded his subframe, so i guess its still worth it.

im not gonna do anything on my soarer.

should note, hacking it, as long as its safe, cant hurt. the rear subframe and/or arms will be the same as ra65 FOR SURE. its an xa6x still.

18th March 2009, 04:29 PM

More from today

http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/7316/nick1597.jpg (http://img9.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nick1597.jpg)

they are imports if you havent already guessed. Im pretty sure this is most likely the only 4 door one too.

The adjuster things on toymods have been sold out for ages, i dunno really. I have to agree the subframe is fucked. Might pull it out and have a gander still. Im having second thoughts on modifying it now tho as any motor i put in it will make easy meat of any tyre profile i plan on running.

the clear choice of engine for this car is a gen 1 3sge.

gen 1 block bolts up to 2s mounts. so its a bolt up proposition in this car.

gen 1 block bolts up to 2s sump.

w box will bolt up with the correct member (sa63)

if you get the right tailshaft, itll bolt up too (sa63 again, also maybe ra40 ect)

the rest is normal fwd to rwd shit really. few tricks but i can go over them with you.

ive got a motor at mine you can look at too.

biggo
20th March 2009, 06:50 AM
ive got a motor at mine you can buy too.

Fixed

That is probably a good starting point tho. Becaause knowing me she will more than like likely go thru a few incarnations while in my ownership. 3sge is will not the ultimate but far from the worse and probably the sensible approach. I was always anything but sensible meh.

A bit of rading last night unearthed that altezza lsd's bolt into f series irs housings? Anyone know more cos most that ive looked at say you need some special half shaft adaptors.

Colour will be plain jane white, just for the ease and its not such cop bait.

Im going to get wasted and laid this weekend so ill leave it to marinate in tectyl until i get back :)

driftke70
20th March 2009, 10:13 AM
bender going on a bender

sounds good but,

as far as i am aware altezza situation is right, know nothing of the half shafts and cvs though.

biggo
20th March 2009, 01:32 PM
what did you buy beal?

Might get a detroit locker as new lsd's are $$$

Also found an ra60 coupe with irs that may be wrecked. might have to grab a few nessicities and spares heh.

slydar
20th March 2009, 02:34 PM
ra60s are live axle. its a 65 or 63 :)

and F is an F. theyre all cross compatible. only bearings need to be changed.

your half shafts with be fine. its only when like the factory diff was something odd like a torsen or viscous (other brands toy' dont do viscous i dont think) that the half shafts need changing.

i have a F lsd too atm. you might tempt me if you package buy both (motor and diff) with the coil. also have a w box with bell for S.

Had a look at beals rona and the boot is completely different, my only hope is to do a half decent job on the only boot lid in the country hehe.

from what i can gather its
14x8 SSR mk3's all round... say its a 0 to -10 offset from my experiance.
with TRD inserts (im guessing ae86 gear in it) 8kg/mm front 6kg/mm rear.
and the cage would be either carina or ae86... you can get a cage for eveything over there sooo yeah.
and what body spec's you looking for?

16th April 2009, 08:42 PM
well id gather its an AA60 rina so that means, i dunno what it means.

the struts on mine are MA61 type, not sure if aa60's had pwr steer or not so i guess that would make a difference on struts. Rim specs are win, well for me anyway, cage is just something to gander at as im sure mines out of something non toyota.

All round win that article tho, let me know if you wanna sell it :)

think of the rina' just like a xT140 corona, its pretty much the same car besides the body which is not all that dissimilar. good thing about that is an easy brake upgrade for you would be MA61 rotors and calipers. you can get some good disks and pads for them... the stock ones are almost fine even in my JZA61 supra

the car in the article was a TA63 carina, i guess it came with a 3tgeu or even a 3tgteu.
it would of had power steering just like most of the 80's FR toyotas in japan, only australia failed on not getting power steering in our car.

he would of gotten the mounts from a AA63 carina which came with a 4age from factory as well to mount that motor in there, think that motors a AE92 as well ;) and notice a part of the intercooler piping is an old KYB shock cartrage

marvis has a ae86 cage in his celica, might not be the best fitting but if you have one laying around could be worth a try, even if its just the hoop and rear braces.

hummm what else.... all i can think of atm....

oh yeah, when you sell send me PM ;) and that mag with the article in it is mine!!! forever!!! muhahahahahaha!

Like yo work.. A lot.

Just wanted to ask about how you did the rust repair on the guards. Before welding in the new metail did you lip the gaurd edge so they overlapped? Or how did you do it? About to do it on mine..

Peas

biggo
28th April 2009, 07:47 PM
yes and no, the top 2 squares are just sitting there welded on. the long edges of the other 2 have lips on them, basically just make the peice a lil longer and grab some thick plate, hacksaw a line like 10-15mm and use that a lipping tool. once you got it like 90* degress you can just hammer it under and it will sort it self out. Worked beaut on the boot lid too.

RE the rear end - its the same as MA61/xZ20/RA65 etc etc etc
Ive had a look at it, will leave it till im done with the body but really theres not alot you can do, fair sure commo offset bushes are a bigger diameter so that wont work. old dattos use a weld on mount kit, its far to funky for me to deal with tho.

And john - that f series diff i have is like the weight of a t50! only smaller hehehehe

biGtai
28th April 2009, 07:58 PM
Cheers mate. Unstood it all except the 90 degree part.

If it is a Z20 etc rear end jump onto supraforums.com.au or the likes some guy in NZ makes a bushing kit. Factory LSD!? Miss my MZ21 :(

Edit: it's not a Z20 rear end as there double wishbone from memory.
MA71 = MZ20
MA61 = MZ10 maybe!?
Not sure if that guy made *A61 bushes..

biggo
29th April 2009, 07:42 AM
The 90 degree part - once the lip is bent that much with the lip tool you can then just hit the lip with a hammer. The tool is used to keep the same amount of lip all the way along.

Spent a backbreaking weekend getting the gte ready for its new owner. Has been a mammoth 28hrs so theres been no time for my new nugget. But seeing as im here now i may as well show you what im planning. Ive gotta say after the last build ive learnt a stupid amount both on my driving style and car setup. I will never own a responsive turbo car again, probably not a corolla either. Turbos are just a stupid idea unless your running anti lag. I see no way to mountaineer a car like the gte ever. Not unlees you fancy 17s with 235's.

Anyway, ive worked it out for the rina, im pretty confidant i can keep her chassis straight so all there is left is building it to suit my style. I love my top end, so the plan is now

Rebuild gen1 3sge to stock specs, probably a lil bit looser, burning a bit of oil never hurt anyone.
Pair of cams round 280*
Adaptronic
4 into 1 extractors
ST20V quads

Will see how that goes

And probably for the drive line swap extention housings on the w57 for shorter ratios. It already has a 4.1 final drive so ill just source a truetrac center. Suspension wise its to be advised, ive got a good start on it tho. Hopefully itll be done in 3 months.

Shes not much at the moment, mostly in bits.

Where and how much was your f series lsd beal? Might buy a proper one if the budget fits it in.

Had a decent gander in the cam cover today, I dont know where people get the idea that 3sge gen1's spit the shim over bucket out. If anything id say it would just split and crack first. And being a gen1 it has 2 cam covers as opposed to gen2 on which have a single one. Far out the baffles in there are way to excessive. they would each hold near on half a litre in them cos they have a stupid chooken mesh screen at one end. Im going to bin the lot and be done with it. oil drain at the back of the cam is pretty massive imo.

driftke70
31st May 2009, 05:37 PM
yeah, the mesh slows it down so the drain needs to be big, havnt had a look in those gens but.

Found a clutch setup, got it on order, found a few other bits and bobs and some parts are in the mail.

Does anyone know if you can squash aluminium? I need to go from round to like and oval shape but not.

Anyone?

12th June 2009, 12:32 AM
what are you trying to do? you can squash it easily if its like tube just heat it and bend but dont heat it too much in one spot at a time because it will crack,

biggo
12th June 2009, 07:16 AM
I need to make a manifold for the quads. Using the tvis plate, gut the butterflies, and the diameter is close enough to 2.5 inches. Problem is the quads are near on 50mm at the back so i dunno. Plan was to get 4 2 to 2.5" reducers and squash them.

Maybe tomorow

Put the moator! together today, ended up using a 2sc mount on the intake side and a 22re mount on the exhaust side to try tilt it back to the drivers side. Few lil hiccups but nothing major, got some more info for the tech article ill have to update oneday.

Might pick up the motor tomorow and test fit it in the bay for measuring purposes. need to know how long i can make my intake amonst other things.

Clutch is sorted. Pretty keen on running the W57 instead of the W55. Intake is semi sorted, dropped the junk off to an engineering firm to make templates of.

Last door is painted, might grab some black and paint the bars this weekend too. I dont think the door turned out very well tho, ill have to blame the beers for that.
