There are 3 basic types of starter motor that fit the AE86, or any RWD 4A motor. All starters listed fit the AE86 unless said.

Normal type 0.8kw starter, 4.40kg:
28100-15031 4A-C Auto
28100-15060 4A-C
28100-15170 4A-GE, with heat sheild
28100-15160 AW11
[attachment=14314:attachment]
This starter came on AE71, AE86, both 4A-C and 4A-GE. And AE82 both 4A-C and 4A-GE, and some AE92s with 4A-GE. The 4A-GE version came with a heat sheild, the 4A-C version did not. That is the only difference. This common 0.8kw starter is NiponDenso and shares many parts with other ND starters. eg, the TE72 starter is the same, except the front housing is different.

Reduction type 1.0kw starter, 3.90kg:
28100-15130 AE86,AW11,AA63 4A-GE
28100-15180 AE82,AE92
[attachment=14315:attachment]
This starter did come on some AE86's as well as AE82 and AE92 and others. For spare parts, you can find the same style starter on almost every other Toyota from 5E Startlet/Paseo to 3S-GTE Celica, 7M-GTE Supra, HiLux, Dyna, 7A-FE etc... If it looks the same, most parts will swap over. You just need the 4A-GE housing that bolts to the bellhousing to make it work. This info will help you if you have a dead armature, or clutch or stator yoke. But the solenoid housing is only common to the 4A and 4K starters.

Planatary gear reduction type 0.8kw starter, 2.85kg:
28100-15190 AE92
[attachment=14317:attachment]
This is the type with the long through bolts. It does not look like a reduction starter at first, but it has planatary gears inside and is. It came on some AE92s with 4A-GE. Its main advantage is that it's very light. This style of starter is used on other AE92s with 4A-FE, and AE101, AE102 etc includiing the AE101 20 valve, BUT these ones do NOT fit the AE86 as they are mounted on the back side of the engine. Only the one off the AE92 4A-GE fits. But a 20valve or 7A-FE starter will be good for parts if you already have a 4A-GE one.

Did I miss anything? The same starter motors either fit or come from any AE86, AE71, AE82 Corolla, 4A-GE AE92 Corolla or 4A-GE AW11. (Or some other 4A powered cars, such as Tercel and Carina, AA63 Celica etc.)

There is another 1.4kw starter to fit 4A-GZE, and it is a reduction type like the second starter pictured. But I don't think that fits a T50.

Pretty sure that the te72 starter wont fit a ae86 and vice versa, the shaft that goes into the flywheel is shorter than that of a 4ac ae71 starter.

The TE72 0.8kw starter is exactly the same as the AE86/AE82 0.8kw starter, except for the front alloy housing. Every other part is exactly the same. You can take the guts of a TE72 starter, even the armature and pinion and clutch, and solenoid, and swap it over to a AE86 housing and it will work. More than just working, the parts even have the same numbers.

In the same way, you may think the 1kw reduction starter looks like one from a SV21 Camry, or Starlet or even a 7M Supra. That is because it is exactly the same starter except for the alloy housing that bolts to the bellhousing. Most other parts are common to that style of starter.

So could you use a T-18 starter in a 4age smallport conversion or what would best to use?

Sorry if it reads a bit ambiguous, but I have tried to be as clear as possible. You have to read every word for it to make sence.

A T-18 starter will not fit a 4A-GE.

BUT, if you have a dead 4A starter and you have a good T-18 starter, you can swap ALL the parts over.

Ah i understand now.

Yes, i believe that all of the t18 parts would fit into a ae86 ae71 etc starter, i just knew for sure that ae71 starters dont fit to te72 because i have tried that lol.

Good information, thanks Jonny

You can also buy an aftermarket reduction type starter. Im running one. Will get more details when I find them. Its physically a bit smaller and the solenoid housing is a heap smaller.

It would seam you can also use a reduction starter off a 1G motor, and use a spacer plate to suit 4A. As pictured on Yahoo Auctions Japan.

I add this in here mainly as it contains some photos of the planetary type reduction starter, both for size comparison and also shows the internal appearance.

So If I were to buy a 1984-89 4AGE lightened flywheel and clutch combo for my 20V BT, could I simply use the 4AC starter instead of the BT starter and all would be good? I ask because 20V BT lightened flywheels and clutches costs a fair bit more and If I can get away with using a 16V flywheel, then why not?

I assume you have a AE86. You have to use the 4A-C starter. The 20valve one will not fit. You can use any 4A-GE flywheel you choose. But the 4A-GZE flywheel may make the clutch hit a little bit to start with.
