Well finally got my car off regency defect after owning it for 6 months and having it defected two weeks after I got it . Was completely stock when I bought it except for a 2 inch exhaust. The car is mainly a stiff hills setup, as sliding is not it's only use. Pretty much spent all my money earnt on suspension/chassis since I've'e had it so far. Car had 205,000 kms on it when bought it so the 4AC is relatively fresh and revs and goes quite nicely. Will keep updating this with future mods and' shit...

nice mate, what model falcon springs have you got in the front..? any idea on the rates they have? i have just got cuts atm and im looking for a cheap temperary setup as im poor until i get a desent job

Konakid
20th May 2007, 01:02 AM
Hot tip, get the springs out of a LTD falcon, its the statesman version of the falcon, and hence are stiffer due to the extra weight. Fronts would be around 4.5-5 id say, maybe a bit stiffer but the shocks are rooted (read:stock) so i can't really tell. Its pretty stiff all the same.

If you looking for a cheap setup just get falcons all round and new rear KYB short strokes. Works pretty mint although it highlights the front shocks crapness and tends to bounce a bit depending on condition of your shocks.....which sucks. I wouldn't have gone so low on the front if i wasnt changing to 86 struts soon, as being that low the bumpsteer and bounce is a bit dangerous.

Get falcons, they will be much better than stock cut springs.

On another note i did my second left rear tailight in a month, this one died due to mothernature....fucking trees.... http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/tongue.gif

yeah bumpsteer is a c**t. stiffer springs cut down on it but seem to have more bounce than cutties. what model are they out of..? AU, EL etc..?

just wanted something tempoary until i can get some proper 6kg for the front on the sprinter struts with new brakes etc. will be keeping falcons in the rear

Javal
30th May 2007, 08:46 PM
Springs from any E series falcon (i.e. EA -> EL) and AU (i think) can be used.

Falcon rear springs fit and seat perfectly in the rear of an xE7x.

The front springs do not fit correctly, but they will do the job.

question. what made you decide on getting such soft spings?
and tell me... what the noticable differences between running rcas and before them? what wheel allignment settings u running?

Bustin_86
23rd June 2007, 08:27 PM
If i was to hazard a guess, i would say because the car is being built for hills as well as skids.

Hence the softer spring rates, to allow for a more tractable package.

keiichi
23rd June 2007, 09:28 PM
but wouldnt the bodyroll make drifting in the hills more dangerous

Bustin_86
23rd June 2007, 09:51 PM
Not drifting in the hills lol.

Grip... There is life beyond hektik skids.

Also, there are more than one way of eliminating body roll then increasing spring ratio. Swaybars for one... Even then, Some body roll can be usefull.

Any more questions about setup should be directed the tech section dude. Clogged up KonaKid's thread enough.

THAT BEIGE T18 IS OFF ITS GUTS BRO

Konakid
23rd June 2007, 11:18 PM
Bustins got it, but yes, drifting in the hills :)

6 and 5 is in no way soft, its plenty stiff for slides in the wet and slides fine in the dry (check pic on page 1 not much body roll at all.).

As the car is a hills set up, any stiffer springs with road tyres (not much grip compared to semi's) would be too stiff.

Swaybars control bodyroll, not the springs, remember, hence the planned swaybar mods in the future as i plan to hillclimb, track sprint the car later on.

As for the RCA's, massive difference, especially when combined with the new shocks. Would have thought that the quicker steering of the PS arms would have made them be not quite as effective but the car now actually points where you steer over bumps. Gives much more confidence so the car can be driven harder, its awsome! Getting a wheel alignment on monday, seem to have lost some camber due to the only increase being the extra track of the corona arms, as the rcas extend the strut. No biggie, just need some camber tops. Will probably run between 1 and 2 mm of toe out, camber should be around -1 and castor, well as much as it can get with the stock rods!

Clogged thread? Bustin, it 2 pages!

keiichi
23rd June 2007, 11:47 PM
can u describe to me exactly what bump steer is? either i dont get it or i have no idea and it doesnt bother me.

p.s. im not clogging  just having a technical discussion between fellow ae71 drivers.

Bustin_86
23rd June 2007, 11:48 PM
So did the RCA's effectively change your camber?

Also, did they raise the ride height?

I'm a bit mystified by these things >.<

Lol, i know, just i get enough shit from lawson about C1's thread :P

keiichi
24th June 2007, 12:33 AM
RCAs dont change the ride high as they sit between steering arm and hub (wheel is on hub so yeh , stays same hight), it actually lowers the control arm - which is also why it reduces camber. i still have no idea how these stop bump steer though. avtually no... i think its because when u lower the car the tie rods point up and when u go over bumps it toes out. as oposed to toeing in.

keiichi
24th June 2007, 02:19 AM
ok i paid more attention and i think i do get bump steer, and its very annoying, now i know what u people are going on about :P
*edit* sorry ill stop talking about my crap now.

bump steer, simply put, car steers when it hits a bump in the road without you touching the wheel.. I get mega ass bump steer with an s13 front end suspension

slidn70
24th June 2007, 12:56 PM
This is my idea. When you put rona arms in, it puts the lower balljoint on more of an angle. when you hit a bump it can't pivot as much so it pretty much stays still so your tyres and steering will absorb the bump.. i get it too but my front end is so farked atm its not funny :P

Nice car konakid ;) i like your idea of building more of a hill climb car

JDM quads should be here in 2 weeks, woot, stoked that i got the beaver panel as well, will make it look more genuine compared to hacking up the standard one, word.

The inspiration for this build comes from way back last year when i first laid eyes on "drfae86"s jdm style ae71, no doubt one of, if not the first to go quad headlights in Aus. Ever since then iv'e wanted one with the same set up and jdm style chin spoiler that he cut out of garden edging. Seeing gillys car just sparked the fire again. Heres pretty much the only pic that still works from the "darkness ae71" thread, wish he used a website as host then the pics wouldn't be lost!

Konakid
11th October 2007, 09:29 PM
hey dude, nah i havent, cant seem to see how they just bolt on, it seems that the flatnose and slanty E7's rad supports have different holes for their respective headlight types. I may have to drill new holes to bolt the quad brackets to, i dont want to really, will PM gilly regarding the fitiment as i have a few questions.

Gilly
11th October 2007, 10:30 PM
they do have different bolt holes

early front KE's are the pick of the bunch as they literally bolt straight in, i did Breno's fit up in about 20 minutes.

Grant (v-tec) would be the best person to pm as he fitted an early front on his slanty nose therefore it would be a similar deal to what you want bar the mount holes for the inside (grill side) headlight mounting bolts and a hole for plug access.

breno
11th October 2007, 10:31 PM
yeah, there are anouther set of 4 holes for the quads them selves.
But they might use 2 origional ones, but they def dont use the 2 on the inside.
There are also a extra big hole in the panel itself for the extra wiring.

only really photo i have.

Pretty sure im just going to get the rad support panel from a ke70 and spot weld it back in, after getting it painted first, obviously!

Javal
12th October 2007, 04:06 AM
Changing the Rad Support over is bit of a task, but it's not overly difficult...

4+8mm drill bit (guide and full) to drill the spot welds out, and then weld back in.

Don't bother painting it, just rattle can it matte / satin black, seedy spec.

Ask craig if you for some bizarre reason get stuck, we did this before.

Gilly
12th October 2007, 07:48 AM
i will get you meaurements today if you want

my old shell is downstairs i'll take a pic and ms paint edit it with all the measurements so you should (in theory) be able to drill the holes correctly

starni_boy
12th October 2007, 09:44 AM
there's a tech article or something about early front into late front..

will try dig it up for the both of us.

wooley
12th October 2007, 11:57 AM
surely its easier to just drill the new holes than change over the entire rad support.

Konakid
12th October 2007, 07:04 PM
Gilly that would be sweet! but what about the holes for wiring? I guess ill just have to drill some more holes although This rad support will hardly hold the radiator up!

Gilly
12th October 2007, 09:23 PM
i had a good look at my cars today (i have the luxury of a square and slanty front :P ) there is major differences in the rad support, so much so that it won't be as easy as just drilling the appropriate holes. you may actually need strips of ally or steel to go over existing slanty light openings to mount the old square front.

i'm assuming you have the front off your car henry so i'll post up a pic of my very naked early front ( <<< how dodgy does that sound :P )

that will reveal the extent of the operation, i still say doable, actually rethinking just now the JDM lights have the bolt holes further apart horizontally than early square front so it might actually be easier to put a jap front on a slanty than a square on slanty.

meh pic tomorrow with measurements and shiz

Peter
13th October 2007, 06:24 PM
Sounds the shiz, ill keep on eye on this thread, as it should prove useful if i ever wish to do a similar conversion. Major Props KonaKid, Keep it up!

plans for paint? or just run around as is?

Konakid
30th October 2007, 08:10 PM
Paint, of course! Will match the front up to the rest of the car and fix the rusted boot love hole. Plans are to get some origin copy flares and graft them onto the rear making it look like a really flared stock guard, to match the flared fronts. Was going to reskin the rear guards with metal but it will be too much effort, will be able to run wider wheels with the flares.

Got the T-18 bumpers secured this arvo, only took bout half an hour, front required redrilling of the original mount while the rear only required drilling holes in the body for the original bracket to bolt into. I saw someone go to the effort of modding the original mounts to suit and welding onto the T-18 bumper but as long as you have the existing brackets then it isnt neccesary.

Heres a few pics to show how its done:

Fireplace = Mahogany and slate (Although the grain reminds me of radiata pine), felix. Learn your timbers.

I lol'd nonetheless.

And the powerplant will be.......?

Please no more antiques, i think a 4hp steam boiler aint gonna cut it.

still, 4ac, its fun enough, actually got it drivable and took it for a few runs around the block, no headlights and a missing tail light and all, went good, shorter 4.1 ratio is noticeable, bit better acceleration.

Update oneone...

whiteline adj swaybar is in and its fucking dope. I highly recommend swaybars, they are the shiznit.

Decided to paint the entire car, new colour, just not sure on one yet..

Always been a fan of white or tan but silver/grey would be dope......ohh and bought some rear flares.

is this that "loop hole" u were explaning to me at mitcham girls?

Gilly
14th November 2007, 11:51 PM
i wish there was a loop hole 2 nights ago

instead i spend an hour in a cop car while they try to find out who i am and why i'm driving a car that isn't mine and hasn't been registered for 7 months

I didn't know my parents address or phone number or my brothers (his car) i had no license or phone on me.

oh it was fun

all got sorted though, now i'm spending my 5 days "holiday" clearing my brothers defects and getting the car re-registered before monday. all fines are in my name as i was the driver and couldn't get my brother to the scene. Cop was cool though he puled off the rego sticker so i wouldn't get a 4th ticket and have to go to court.

very off topic but somewhat fitting...
