If you gus are running a gze that was origionaly running a map sensored ecu (8.9:1 compression ratio) i have made a safe 170rwkw at 16psi and the engine took a thrashing UNTILL boost spike from dogee external wastegate to 19or 20psi first melting 3 pistons then finally cracking block and blowing headgasket.
my engine was running stock everything enginewise except for rwdjdm intake manifold. Im just giving a warning for all you guys looking for big power from stock gze's if you are running high boost make sure you are running the low comp AFM gze (8:1 compression ratio) as in my unknowledgeable days i smashed a good GZE. cheers.

why blame compression? was your ECU tuned for 20PSI?

seems to me it may have leaned out, actually it looks like you were runing a standard ECU.

i'd say if you are running high boost, TUNE IT!

bad luck by the way, hope the new engine lasts you longer http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/emoticons/biggrin.gif

i'm using that block to run 20psi...

Me too..

I see no logical reason why *slightly* higher compression means it can't be boosted up

It comes down to tune, how far the boost spiked, and the build of the engine .. compression in this case is nothing IMO

isnt the problem the due to the wastegate failing? ie. failing to control boost?

you even say u made a safe 170rwkw at 16psi
so its not the tune that killed your motor

what wastegate was it by the way? im guessing a china copy type gate?

What injectors where you using as the stds gze injectors would be close to maxing out at 170rwKW.

yeh
those china gates are notorious for failing
shoulda bought a decent gate to start with ie. tial, turbosmart, turbonetics, hks, trust..etc

woulda saved you a motor

i dhave too agree, there is no reson you cant run high boost in any 4agze.
id say it was lean out that caused it as the injectors struggled to cope with suppliing enough fuel for the air provided by the excess boost due to a jammed wastegate.
i know for a fact, the stock 4agze pistions are better than most aftermarket ones, and a fraction of the price!
20psi is alot, but not stupid IF it is tuned to run that much (injector size ect. included)
im not taking away from you point though, gotta be carfull when running alot of boost in any motor, especially if it has a particualy high comperssion ratio.
thanks for the heads up though.

what was the injector duty cycle when you tuned it??
coz if the injectors were close to maxing out then you probably just lean the motor out and overheated it,

if its all done properly rebuilt low comp worked head running 10-15psi should be able to take it well?

im aiming for about 140-160rwkw

sweet another street turboed sprinter in sa! that power figure is easily achieveable with either gze. smallport head ftw! I know this will start a war form everyone that reads this but having spoken to people running 4agte setups and having driven my car with a bigport head then exactly the same setup with a smallport head 30rwkw more, way more torque and boost will come on way harder!!!!!!!!!!! i will never run a 4age with a bigport head again!

interesting... i wander why it did this? did you have the same amount of boost? and the exact same set up, but a small port instead of the big port and thats it?

JDMJNKY

EXACTLY the same setup just changed the head same cams everything!

ive got smallport head on my 7rib black going to get hks 272 cmas and new valve springs ported head gzepistons this should be achiavble for this power set up

also eddie could you pm your motor specs please or what you could recomend with building 4age turbo

good manifold
turbo (size)
cooler (size)
ecu (cant you get fuel setup ie apexi fuel sysytem)

chat soon

On my old AE86 I was running a standard AE101 Ze small port, with an RB25DET turbo, RWD big port inlet manifold and Bigport to small port reducer plate, adaptronic ECU on 12.9 psi it made 154RWKW but it had reached duty cycle of the injectors and was running towards an unsafe air fuel ratio so was backed off abit.

About to do it all again now with my new project , but might go cams 264 - 272 or maybe 20V head etc this time and more boost .

Cheers

Would 7mgte injectors have helped being 440cc?
