I normally do my own, as I know what I can claim, tho this year it's a lot more complicated with shares property and a company.. so I pay my tax guy $120 to sort it all out.. to save more money do a excel spreadsheet with all costs and shit already added up for easy reference, no point in paying them moolah for a job you can do..

yeah I paid a bit of extra tax each week so I got a fair bit back, was like saving but without the bank fees and not having to worry about spending it

I earned under the tax threshhold so I think I should be getting like $200 back.
Hooray for me!
Now I just have to get it organised <_<

E-Tax Online (http://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/pathway.asp?pc=001/002/014)

Either do it yourself through a Tax Pack or do it with E-Tax (link above)

If it's starts getting complicated, pay someone else to do it, they get the best results for you that way.

Me, well it either myself or an accountant friend (who used to work for a tax return company) to do it. it's easy for me, I earn a wage, have nothing to claim back (didn't buy textbooks this year  ) so all I'm getting back is what was withheld from me during the year. I have no idea what I'm up for yet, probably not much :(

Yeah, if it's simple enough to do yourself thats the shot. I'm thinking of doing it myself too, not sure when I can get around to it. And my advice is, if you find a good accountant, stick to them!

Glad to hear that you're up with all the taxation legislation and not ripping yourself off over a couple of dollars.

You obviously know what all your entitlements are and how to get the most from them.

Congratulations

you can't claim travel expenses (ie fuel) for travel from home to work and vice versa.. but if your travelling from work place to work place then you can

keep all reciepts for all tools/equipment/work clothes that you use for work as you can use it to reduce your taxable income

for example. you earn $26,000 from being an apprentice mechanic.. spent 1.5k on new tools used at work

> the first 6k you make is tax free

> the money you make between 6k > 25k gets taxed @ 15%

> the money you make between 25k > 75k gets taxxed @ 30%

therefore...
26,000 - total income
-1,500 - less work related expenses - tools and shit
_______
24,500 - Taxale income
-6,000 - less tax free threshold
_______
18,500
@ 15%
_______
2,775 - tax payable for the fin. year

So if $4,000 (payg tax) has been docked outta of your pay for the fin year then expect to recieve ($4000 - $2775) $1225 back

but yeah generally goes a lil something along those lines depending on HECs/medicare levy etc...

Problems of doing work as a contractor and not setting aside tax (don't earn that much) but I'll again end up owing the govt tax again this year.

It isn't fun.

Edit: At least I've been keeping a proper log of all my work-related travel in the car. Isn't much but I'll claim back as much as I can to reduce debt..
