Hi everyone

After giving up looking for a 1st gen celica for a while i picked up a KE70 this week.

White KE70

This is my girlfriends first car she has had it for about a year. She wants a newer car so at the end of the year i will end up grabbing this and she can have my echo. I am still deciding if i should put all the bits from the red car into it or keep it as a standard daily.

The Good Stock grandma mobile
109,000km (with full documentation from toyota!)
drives like new and has a mint interior bar a brown steering surround
The Bad car has some damage to the rear passenger door and arch from blind granny

Anyways I hope you like them. I am going to make a bit of a work log when i work on them.

Daniel.

cheers mate. Yeah the red one was from ebay first went on about a week ago?

Bought it from a Guy called Edmund who is getting out of his D86Garage workshop. He is a top guy got it for a good price. He also threw in some new pistons/rings as well as a full gasket/seal kit as well as a recored sprinter radiator. Gotta be happy with that :)

not sure if thats a tip or you are having a go at me? I will take it as the former :) Dont worry it may be my first efi and 4age but it certainly isnt my first performance engine.

It may look fairly sleeperish but only when its standing still. It is stupidly loud and draws way too much attention heh.

Did a few small things today should have done uni work but i couldnt help myself! Not very interesting but i thought i would share.
The tacho now works properly
the fuel gauge has been upgraded from not working to intermittent
took out the broken mechanical oil pressure gauge in the dash and plugged the sender
Got rid of some random wiring (old alarm?) and stereo junk
Inspected the timing belt and tensioner (is well withing spec)
checked valve clearance - all good except for no3 inlet.
Have just ordered some iridium's from Beerhead
Cleaned and re-oiled the K&N filter

I also had 2 Exhaust studs removed as they had been broken off before i bought it. I got all the studs replaced as well as 6 donuts to hold the whole exhaust up.
I also grabbed a decent battery tray and bracket from the wreckers while i was waiting.

I have also decided that I will take the head off to get reconditioned and slightly worked.

Quite a while since my last update and quite a bit has happened. I will grab some pics tomorrow hopefully.

I have decided to keep the white one and use any parts i can from the red one.

First i put in a classic style recaro i had to replace the sagged drivers seat

Mounting it was easier than i thought no welding, just a couple of holes drilled in the rails some 10mm flat bar to clear the mechanism and slight modifications to the mounting points (i.e. file some holes slightly and drill a new hole in the front driver side mount). This is where the red car came in handy. The earlier style rails (slide adjust facing the side of the seat not front) made for a much simpler job. The aftermarket rails for an 86 wont fit the base of the seat in recaro OEM 6 bolt style applications. I may do a write up when i get a second sear for the passenger side.

Second i put in a stereo as i had to drown out the 4 speed on the highway on a new years road trip.

Its pretty basic but its hidden apart from the headunit, just some JBL 6.5 inch and 4 inch to go with the pioneer headunit. I had the 6.5's laying around so the whole install cost me under $150 :D . For anyone who wants to know how to do it properly i might do a write up.

Third i put in a ae82 twincam steering wheel

Oooo ahhh. what a difficult and exciting mod! As you can see I'm missing my horn button if anyone can help me out with one it would be awesome!

Lastly I have a brake and suspension upgrade!

this is using RA60 struts which seem to be too scary to use because of camber issues. Rubbish! I put a bit of research into it and this is how i got around it...

Firstly i had to dismantle the coilovers that were supposedly RA60 but turned out to be RT132  but no biggie.

So i cut off the sleeve and put them onto the ra60 strut. Put the Konis that came with the red car and some 250lb springs. On top of them sat some cusco camber plates.

For the steering I used some RA65 power steering arms. These are 125mm from the tie rod hole to the balljoint hole, the same as KE70 but with the required 90mm strut bolt spacing. There are a couple of differences however The KE70 knuckle has the balljoint hole in the centre in line with the strut bolts. The RA65 PS arms have this hole on the outside towards the disc and wheel. However using a pair of XT130 control arms brought the balljoint angle to very similar to standard.

I used XT132 tie rod adjuster tubes and RA40 tie rods to give a bit more toe adjustment and because the KE70 system sucks.

Then take it to a competent wheel aligner (A1 steering in Southport QLD is the BEST alignment you can get) and get them to bend the struts. I have 1.6 deg of neg camber with my camber tops a bit past the zero mark, I have about 3 deg of neg if i did want it. Without cambertops or coilovers you should be able to get between zero and 1.5 neg depending on your wheels etc. I must note that my front 6.5 +8 watanabes are VERY close to the strut as the strut was bent keeping these wheels in mind. So like always your mileage may vary... I dummied up the system with ke70 king lows and ke70 tops for those that are cheapskates.

Right now i am sorting out my master cylinder. the KE70 originally came with a 13/16 MC with the ra60 brakes the still worked but the pedal was too spongy. So i poped in a pajero mc which is 15/16. The pedal feels much better but too stiff for my liking. even though the ra60 came out with this sized MC the volume differences in the booster make a big difference to the pedal feel. If i was to leave rear drums in the back i would go for a 7/8 MC (sleeving the pajero MC seems the best bet.) for better feel. I would also adjust the bias towards the rear to balance the braking. However I am putting on a t series disc brake rear and i think with the extra fluid going to the rear i may lose some of the stiffness in the pedal caused by the bias block.

This is only a theory does anyone else have any imput into the last bit?

The rear is OK with koni shocks and kings low springs but i find that over a long rippled surface (tiny bumps) the car will tend to be a bit choppy in the rear. I assume this is because of the progressive nature of the springs. I will eventually get some linar rates made up for the rear perhaps 200 or 225lb? Then there is the issue of captive springs which means moving the shock mount points down or shorter stroke shocks. Which mod would be the better way to go assuming they would both have similar costs?

Lastly the car is still a bit understeer biased but hopefully my adjustable rear sway bar from the red car will help sort that problem.

Oh and the wheels and tyres are

front: Yoko C-drives 185 55 15's with watanabe 15x6.5 +8
rear: Yoko C-drives 195 50 15's with watanabe 15x7.5 unknown offset.

The track is about equal but a set of 15x7 +8 would make it spot on.

Anyhow i hope this info provides some use/ enterainment.

cheers

Daniel.

At the moment i am sorting out the wiring for the smallport 4age. The loom from the red car is "interesting" at best...

Cheers

Daniel.
