some know i own this

for those who don't i do

bought it off Jase from Ballina (interesting road trip) top bloke and car

the rain just washed off the dirt so its pic worthy as its clean

sick car, sick engine, sick blokes pieced it together and an even sicker dude tweaked it :P (me of course)

have some nicer rims to go on later and its done, all the essentials are all there (my old sus and diff plus current 4A powerplant)

INSIDE

AE82 twinky wheel
Razo knob
Breno spec drift button
AE86 shifter boot for the "factory" look
Autometer smallish 8K tacho with shift light
the pimpist houndstooth brown interior EVER :)

RANDOM COOL THINGS

has the sprinter "S" symbol in the headlights
retractable rear seatbelts  its a luxury for a KE owner
mirrors on BOTH sides
Slanty front, i actually dig it big time
FRESH brown interior, the seats are pimp, to use a seat cover is criminal

Nice man

Just wondering how you think the 4AG runs with carbies i currently have a pair and if ur gonna sell the wheels lets us no (y)[/b]

I'm going out there and saying it runs as good and performs as well as my old JDM 16v (EFI) and it was still a sound unit

the reason it's a workable option in this case is the ignition module Jase sourced when he did the conversion, to be honest i can't even remember how it works or what it does but it doesn't feel flat like it should with a locked dizzy curve.

induction is insanely horny and the carbs are uber responsive, ZERO hesitation when the throttle is stabbed just a very sudden rush of the tacho needle :P

its not as refined as a injection setup, it does still feel very "raw" for example cold starts are a bitch (locked dizzy doesn't help) it doesn't like partial throttle, as in say just off idle cruising on the highway its a bit rough, apply that extra little bit of pressure though and it clears right out (you are now speeding though) idle is good when warm but is till a bit lumpy which is actually cool and has more to do with the engine dampner than anything. it still rocked heaps on the mounts without it though :P uses more fuel as well but carbs always will.

its a really good set up though, revs right out sweet as, pulls hard and sounds PORN ;) I really enjoy it, its nice and quiet but when you open up those throttles all the noise comes from the front of the car  and its audible bliss :P

Advans will be kept still when the MKI's go on (need tyres) i'll remember your interest though

Hilton: they are hardly obese  14x7 and 14x7.5 MKI's they are in prety good nick and MKI's always look like the have insane offsets when they are mostly quite tame. they will fit the car well as i don't want to do guard work this time. not for sale either sorry, they were on ebay i expected to be outbid so was pretty chuffed when i came in on a break and saw i'd won them

and no baby seat, full interior though, backseat for my dogs.

there is a tech article on the module Jase used, its piss easy to hook up. Jaycar does a ignition setup as well but i haven't looked much into it nor will i as this works quite well as is.

bay can and will be neater, its probably the fact its yellow as to why it looks clean maybe.

racks would've looked better with the old 4 spoke rims.

i have next week off so some changes are in order, namely installing the rest of my suspension stuff (poly bushes, p/s arms etc) and fitting up the new shoes, just have to open up the bolt holes a bit as SSR's use their own nuts which are a bit unconventional. only needs to be opened up a few thou and its only the outside layer (MKI's use a multi layered centre for those playing at home)

741: that first pic is what i was basing the last build on :)

Biggo: supercheap shank nuts dude, i think they were like $2 each.

nothing happened this week as planned. ihad 5 days off work to catch up with some stuff around the house and maybe a few hours to play with the rolla

instead on monday i was pulled over driving my brothers car

unfortuantely i was not aware the vehicle had been un registered for the last 7 months. i didn't have a wallet or phone nor could i recollect my brothers address or phone number. I was grilled for about 1/2 hour as to who i was and why i couldn't recollect any numbers or addresses, why i was so far from home, was i in fact the owner of the car, had i stolen the car (as the last rego'd owner was not my brother but in fact the guy he bought it off)

eventually my details checked out as did my brothers (found a bill in the car)

i couldn't contact him to face the chrges so i was issued with 3 tickets and $660 worth of fines. They were pretty cool in the end even took the rego sticker off so they would not have to write a 4th ticket which would have resulted in a court appearance. I went to my local the next day to produce my license and was told i was lucky not to have to front court anyway as 7 months is pretty extreme rego wise.

so i've spent the last 4 days organising roadworthies and chasing parts to fix said car in order to get it back on the road ASAP.

lucky he is my brother!!!

holidays are over rated anyway :P

Thanks man, another little idea, I dunno what kind of mesh your running but some flyscreen stuff is like a rubber, try and get like the security door stuff, its metal, will deflect stuff better. been running one for 13 yrs never an issue
stay away from high pressure pumps etc........

the only one i could get from REPCO was an "ECCO" branded item, cost me $170-$180

i'll be hitting them up for that cheap one if i end up needing to replace the pump!!

may have something custom sorted r.e filters. also re doing the fuel setup tomorrow in order to make it easier to diagnose faults plus preovide an individual supply to each carb. at present the rear carb bowls (3 & 4) are filled from overflow of the front carb.

i have some old school bits from my old torana days that will work it so each carb gets their own individual supply

spent all day chasing the cause of my car dying in the ass at about 20% throttle.

fucked with EVERYTHING, different pumps, rewired the ignition stuff (coil now on passenger side as it should be) mucked around with the dizzy and timing etc.

finally started pulling the carbs off figuring "what else could it be" and when removing that sexy ally tray i made i find the problem.

well bugger me if just above the trumpets on cylinder 2 and 3 there is a port that the ally tray was covering  happily revs out to 7500 now :P

i just need to cut out the holes to suit those ports and it can go back on.

at least it didn't cost me anything :P

while i had heaps of stuff apart i did a little engine bay "tidy up"

the very basic loom for water temp, oil pressure and reverse lights now runs under the carbs instead of above so the engine appears "loomless". also put the coil on the passenger side and rewired the ignition harness to suit. looks neater and saves having that massive lead run from the dizzy over to near the washer bottle!! also means i can use my TRD coil lead OMG.

had a few other wires running about for the tacho and thermo fan, they are all under the guards now and part of one loom. tempted to ditch the overflow and washer bottle but have kept them for now. there is a lot of room in the front of an late front (AE71) so some universal overflow and washer bottles would go good under the headlights out of sight.

I'll do that later though. keen to get some tyres on the MKI's and fit up some of my other nice bits here from the old white shell (p/s arms, poly bushes, guages etc)

you might be able to grind a bit out of the booster for some clearance on the filters, or if you're running filters all the time grind off a bit of trumpet so that the filter won't get ground and torn between boost and trumpet. won't look the best when you take filters off tho :S

For a second there i was going to ask you if you're still enjoying carbs over EFI but luckily it was an easy fix :P

 ^^^

fixed my car and broke it again all in one day :P

read below for the reason it was broken in the first place

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
Well sort of a funny story

well circumstance is funny, might be expensive yet, we'll see how funny it is then

I recently made an ally tray to protect my carbs from dirt and shit, i had to remove it as it was blocking 2 ports that were needed to make the carbs run spot on. Now it had taken me all day to realise this was the fault and u had chased fuel supply issues and possible ignition failures. i only realised the tray was at fault as i was beginning to remove the carbs and spotted theholes when i removed the trumpets etc!!!

in my excitement i quickly fitted the trumpets back on (no tray) and went for a drive.

well today i have learnt i did not tighten the trumpets up in all my excitement. it appears i merely nipped them up. this became evident last night when on my drive home from work (11pm) my tunes were accompanied by a few odd clunks and bangs, thinking nothing of it i continued on my merry way.

a few klms from my place i heard quite a large clunk which ricocheted into the floor.

"wtf was that?!?!, meh its like nearly tomorrow already i must have left a screwdriver under the bonnet when i was mucking with stuff" I thought.

car drove fine right up until my street where it developed a misfire, "weird, will look at it tomorrow"

tomorrow comes (toady :P ) and i pop the bonnet to find number 3 trumpet gone (thankfully lodged between the rack and crossmember) missing nuts and bolts to retain said trumpets. all is not lost i can merely reattach said parts and pretend nothing ever happened, well that is of course until i realise number 3 auxillary venturi is gone leaving quit a large vacant hole.

"oh shit, that was the clunk"

calm down, don't stress, head down to where i heard it. 5 minutes of strange looks and gutter burrowing i find the missing piece in a flower bed

"YES!!!!!!!!" i declare as i hold the piece above my head in an unfounded display of extreme happiness, getting married having child paled in comparison to the feeling enveloping me*. this was to be a short lived glory, the sun hits my trophy and the perfect cylindrical item i should be looking at in utmost admiration is a now strange egg shaped tube, somewhat reminisent of a squashed toilet roll.

one is now not as psyched as one should be after thinking he has solved a great mystery in less than 10-15 minutes.

this leaves me in a predicament i now need to source 1x auxillary venturi for a 40mm side draught weber carb part number 69912 (thanks google) so i need to find someone who sells this shit new, or source a busted carb that i can cannibalise

here lies the lesson friends

no matter how excited you are to have performed your latest mod or fixed your latest hiccup and regardless of how highly you rate your mechanical prowess, ALWAYS, ALWAYS check your work. do not rely in your apparent ability to do it right straight up :P

oh and its always the simplest of errors that bite the hardest

*disclaimer: no where near as good feeling :P

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/159509.jpg[/b]

so that was yesterday

was put onto a guy who's shop is literally 3 minutes from my house and he just happened to have the exact auxillary venturi (brand new) i needed sitting on shelf where it had been collecting dust for he thinks roughly 8-10 years :P

$25 later i was sorted. I modified my ally tray to suit those ports on the carbs (so it will run right) and pieced it all back together. I was very happy when it all fired up sweet and was a very happy runner.

I changed the fuel delivery setup. Originally Webers are to have the feed line hooked to the front carb then splits into the second one. I have never been a fan, no reason other than my old workshop controller was into multiple carbs when i had my LJ torana and just swore by individual feeds :P. anyway i had a left over distribution block (basically a block with 4 8mm hose fittings) so now i have the pump into the block via fitting 1, fitting 2 supplies the front carb, fitting 3 the rear carb and fitting 4 has been removed and i installed a speco fuel pressure gauge. ended up being neater than expected as i could hide the fuel filter under the tray and routed the supply hoses under the tray and they now come up between the two carbs rather than out the front ;)

I also decided to improve my filtration situation by cutting down the uni filters i had and using the last 40mm, number 4 had been torn in half so i shortened all of them so it didn't look wak. Uni filters have a thin wall but the very end is quite thick probably 3-4 times the wall thickness s i was curious as to whether that extra restriction would be noticable..... it was, it couldn't breath at all and overfuelled like a bitch, black smoke and missfires ensued  so i've switched back to flyscreen for the time being. The left over sections of unifilter i'm pressing flat with some laminate and phone books, what i'll do is similar to what i'm running now i'll cut a square of uni filter and zip tie it over the trumpet. not pretty but i may as well use what i have.

This engine knows it shouldn't be driven with that minute level of filtration, so upon pulling out of my driveway to enjoy my now running car the exhaust scraped (as it always does) and promptly seperated it self just after the extractors. this sounds cool at first then you start moving and realise the rest of the exhaust is now scraping along the road.

basically every time my pipes have been hitting speed bumps, driveways and the like it has been cracking the welds on the middle muffler. it's been leaking for weeks but not a major concern :P until today when it completely seperated. thankfully the muffler is "U clamped" on so i can take it off and get the exhaust mob to make me a piece of 2 1/4" pipe to replace it ;) that way i'll stop hitting shit and the exhaust will just have the one rear muffler so it should sound a bit more 4AGEish :)

starting some other stuff image wise as well

some minor body details but mainly rims, just need tyres fitted for my rear pair, Kmart guy was cool but gave up pretty quick. i tried the aerosol trick but couldn't get it right and ended up watching a flaming tyre

Won't you just have the same problem though? Of it over fueling?

Gilly
28th November 2007, 05:30 AM
no, the wall thickness of the filter is maybe 8mm. the end of the filter has about 4-5 layers making it up to 40mm thick which is what caused the restriction

bay as it sits now, was taking some pics around the house so i grabbed some of the the new bay layout. you can see the coil has been moved over to the dizzy side so i've lost the really long lead that used to run over the engine. loom for temp sender and oil pressure switch etc has been run under the carbs instead of above. thats it really, cleaned up some loom stuff and addd the fuel distribution block but i'll talk more on that later. I've removed the catch can (sorry Brendan) car isn't being driven at present due to a snapped exhaust  so i'll sort out something there later but will most probably just vent to a vacuum line. also very ghetto filter system is sorted for now, kept the flyscreen and added a layer of uni filter "wall" so what do you get??

GDM MuffinTops :P yes they look wak :(

this is when i got it, i was stoked then!!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/157355.jpg

and now after some "tweaking"

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/159812.jpg

this is the fuel distribution block from a Torana i had like freaking years ago :) the fuel pump feeds the far right fitting then the 2 remaining fittings each feed and individual carb, the original setup has one line going to the front carb which has a sort of "T" piece fitting that links to the 2nd carb (see pic 1 for original layout) i ran the hoses again under the carbs and through the gap between them just for simplicity. block was designed for tripple webers so i needed something to block the third hole, made sense to get a pressure gauge.

makes the most sense to reshell

i have to have a registered car asap so i might grab a loan for my slightly less than my approximate value of combined parts and buy something. OR I just need a registered ealy fronted KE70 ASAP

start looking

normally wouldn't care at all but it was a clean shell and i know Jase and Brendan put in a lot of hard work!!!

was a stupid thing really, 3:30am, rounding a corner i must have turned in to much in my sleepy state and the back right wheel slapped the traffic island jumped up, landed hard and shot me across the otherside of the road and straight into a square edged gutter.

i thought it was a slow enough hit but looking at the corner in the day light i must have been travelling a little quicker than normal as its a fair distance to cross 2 lanes and into a gutter hard enough to kink a rail.

my apologies to Jason and Brendan. Jase you have dibs on the motor, i'll get in touch in the next few days as to whats happening.
