PLEASE WRITE ALL TECH ARTICLES IN THE FAQ SECTION FROM NOW ON

:)

<a href="http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/faq" target="_blank">http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/faq (http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/faq)</a>

It is a WIKI style FAQ

Which means that anybody can sign up and edit it...

I will also be needing some volunteers to help move everything from the forum over to the FAQ please. You may score a moderator position on the forum if you help out.

Thanks

Nicko

I guess this seams like a good idea, and I guess you have thought about what forum is the best to use.

I have seen many forums, e-mail lists, websites etc come and go over the years.

We probably have to think; What is the most usefull/searchable/accurate layout style that will still be usefull and relivent in 5 or 10 years time?

I guess WIKI is the answer, I'm just wondering if it was discussed.

Also, are there other wiki sites on the AE86 that serve the exact same purpose? Does Australia deserve its own site?

how do I make new topics in the main index?

rthy
10th November 2007, 01:52 AM
never mind I have figured it out now, I have started to add my lock spacer article in a new and extended form

rthy
10th November 2007, 10:00 AM
hmmm, I have finished posting the remainder of my lock spacer guide

its a bit disheartening to write something in fine detail and then have someone edit it whilst your still putting it all up taking most of the info out because they think it should be more basic and written like a mechanic instead of a manual

DavisJD
11th November 2007, 08:56 AM
Is there anyway of making it so the original author can add the information that others submit (like an approval system), or a FAQ moderator.

Rather than every Tom, Dick and Harry butchering them?

Driftspec
11th November 2007, 09:00 PM
Unfortunately Wiki doesn't let you do it that way :( Which really sucks, because a lot of the articles should be written in a technical aspect and the original article preserved. Might just have to be something that is enforced by a few people, wherever possible.

There is a tool available to see who has been editing entries... always funny to see how Sony has been editing the MS XBox 360 wiki, that one raised a few eyebrows...

rthy

looks like I had a bit of a mix up a while back, what really happened is that I was doing some major adding and editing to an article and at the same time someone thought they would do some minor corrections. That was all good except when I tried to save it, it said it had already been changed since I opened it and it wouldn't let me save, I tried to copy and paste but for some reason it didnt save properly. I am thinking it was my fault though.

Well I have done a heap of work on 20v conversion guide, I sure hope its right. Hachirusto made a good effert on the rear suspension guide too.

Awesome work guys

If you are going thru the tech section adding things, please add a post to the end of the thread you're adding saying "ADDED TO FAQ"

That way we can tell which have been added

rthy

I havent posted it yet but I am doing a massive revisiion of my cooling system guide, it will when done have 3 different setups instead of just the one

I'll throw up a basic suspension installation guide (originally written by ae86fow) to match up with the other info in the FAQ

rthy
26th November 2007, 07:06 PM
would it be a wiser choice to break it up into individual peices to make things easier to look up? like one called "spring rates" and other sections?

nothing I am sure about, just an idea

rthy
26th November 2007, 07:26 PM
now that is an idea that I like, or how about something very simular:

have a main suspension setup page where it has information where necesary and the appropriate links but for sections that dont have links just have the necessary info untill it has its own section, anyway we will work something out

which just reminds me, I shoudl set up a section about the rear end geometry and adjusting the anti squat and so on

added a short article in spigot bearings

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/faq/inde...NE/4age/spigots (http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/faq/index.php/BY_ENGINE/4age/spigots)

hopefully almost all the questions new people ask will be on there

rthy
2nd December 2007, 06:22 PM
it will indeed get there, I do belive in what I predicted, in that this will be a huge resource. One thing though will this ever be backed up? I couldnt bear the thought of all of us losing all our hard work to some dickhead cracker. I think I will back it all up myself

Take your time with that article we all have busy lives

I havnt had the time to add to the wiki for a while but could we have it a sticky put up in the tech question forum for people to search the wiki for information because I have noticed alot of topics poping up with all the same questions over the last couple of weeks

rthy

ah man I started and finished a new article and I thought it would take about 20 min to write but it instead took something like 3 to 4 hours, damn!!

Differences between the Silvertop and blacktop engines (http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/faq/index.php/BY_ENGINE/4age/20vengines)

this I hope will stop the perpetual questions asked in forums about this also maybe inform people about a few things they didnt know. I hope I got it all correct in my info out of my head.

Could someone proof read it for me though I am rather understandably feeling rather stuffed after all that.

rthy
25th April 2008, 12:05 AM
oh also forgot to say I will add a heap of pics when I can. I didnt want to take all of Billzillas pics, it wouldn't be right so I will take my own. Kinda handy have a parts pile of black and silvertop bits

Jonny Rochester
25th April 2008, 12:20 PM
Good work on the 20valve thing. Maybe you could list the full specs of the camshafts, plus the lobe centre angle of the inlet cam, and how it changes with VVT.

Other topics to cover:
What do I do if my ECU is not using the VVT?
Is this a interferance motor, and what size cams would make it so?
What port is best to use for MAP signal?
Picture of silver/black pistons, and where to buy replacements?

rthy
25th April 2008, 04:34 PM
jonny: while those ideas are good I think most are out of topic for an article about comparasins between the two engines. With the exception of a picture showing both pistons, as that is something I was plannign to add amoung a few other things.

Also I need to find out the answer to all those questions myself first! :D

Damo: PM me

rthy
4th May 2008, 11:29 AM
edit: Nick the maths icon isnt working, any idea why?

rthy
4th May 2008, 02:16 PM
well I bypassed the math function because it was broken and instead did all my formula in wikipedia, took a screenshot, edited the pic, saved it and then just posted the pic in my new guide on our wiki. Slow and painfull but it looks good I think.

Anyhow I stayed home today afterall and I have spent ages writing this article:

Calculating Static Compression ratios (http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/faq/index.php/BY_ENGINE/4age/compression-ratios)

it was real hard to write, but its all there:

if you change your head, bore your engine out, stroke it whatever... this will show you how your total static compression ratio will change. Well that is assuming I am right, all I started with is the inital formula and the rest of the article and formulas I worked out myself. So no promises its right (if I am wrong my new engine goes boom! hehehhe)

I don't expect anyone to check everything but could someone see if my grammar is ok?

Driftspec
4th May 2008, 02:51 PM
As usual, awesome work Sam. Having a read of the compression change article now, although its a bit of a headfuck for me on a Sunday arvo

rthy
4th May 2008, 09:36 PM
yeah thanks, now thinking about it I will add a little bit on how to allow for different pistons.

rthy
6th May 2008, 12:21 AM
ok people I want to know what articles do you guys want to see added to the FAQ section next? I am still working on my fuel system guide but is there anythign else that should be added?

I want to make our wiki something really decent and even if I am the only one still adding crap then so be it.

Anthony
6th May 2008, 12:52 AM
Whats the protocol for editing incorrect information? do you have to contact the author, or is it like wiki where you just do it?

samuel
6th May 2008, 07:27 AM
Just edit it and leave something like "last edited by Anthony"

the FAQ is a public resource

WHOEVER wants to change it can change it, and nobody in particular is in charge or NEEDS to be notified before an edit

No matter who they think they are... Hey Atlas...

How about an article which actually explains offsets, wheel widths, backspace, stud pattern and diameters correctly and scientifically, with the idea that the user can learn to calculate what will fit for themselves.

I know there is already a guide listed, but it focusses more around blankly stating what will fit on an 86 and what wont. This all goes out the window when you have flared gaurds and folded lips etc. I feel it would be a more flexible and practical resource if it gave people the information about how they can calculate things for themselves on their own cars. The existing guide is quite decent, though, I don't mean to critiscise.

in the 1 stop diff info it says ra40 diffs mounts don't line up properly to directly bolt inot an e7 or 86. i run this diff in my car and put it in myself and know that it all fit in perfectly.

Here are the measurement variations I measured between RA40 Series One and Kouki JDM AE86 diff mounts:

ADM RA40 / Top 4 link inner spacing: 519 / Bottom 4 link inner spacing: 977 / Spring hat centre spacing: 950

JDM AE86 / Top 4 link inner spacing: 494 / Bottom 4 link inner spacing: 980 / Spring hat centre spacing: 930

Its very close. Make up your own mind about whether it fits. Several people have used them with no issues.

I believe the spring hats are smaller diameter on the RA40 diff as the springs were tapered. RA40 has bigger drums also. Requires tailshaft modification, to use the RA40 tailshaft rear section. I believe it can be done with a t18 rear half shaft but have not tried it.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, the mounting points on the ra40 diff all seem to be a few mm offset further forwards on the housing, effectively making the diff sit further back in the car. Just something I noticed. Tailshafts have some ability to move back and forth so its probably not a practical issue as far as fitting and using it goes, just a bit less spline contact in the gearbox perhaps.

See the tapered RA40 spring and the different sized hats:

johl
12th May 2008, 01:11 PM
i use a t series rear half tail shaft and it works fine. i didnt have any problems putting in my trailing arms into the diff so the difference in spacing is virtually irrelevent. and also i didnt even notice the difference in the spring seat and they sit in there just fine. so as far as I'm concerned this diff is 100% bolt in just like a jdm diff is.

thats an idea I have been thinking of myself, its a good idea but a hard one because theres so much bogus info on there

maybe we should have where/who the information came from next to it and exactly was was and wasnt attached at the time

BTW I weighted a T50 without oil, mounts and with a shifter to get 30.5kg

yeah i agree, there is alot of conflicting information.

i think the idea i had in mind, was just some approximate numbers +/-5kg, just so when people say "sr20 is to heavy and will throw out geometry", members can have a good idea on how heavy these are to make a proper decision.

of course we will try and keep it as accurate as possible, what you think?

rthy
25th May 2008, 04:23 PM
yeah sounds like our best best Dave.

the reason why I like the idea to list where the information came from if possible to help validate claims.

HachiRoku
25th May 2008, 09:53 PM
In that case, Dave, those weights you took from my post in another thread, were taken from here: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/8422/4age.htm

I had another look over that page, and it seems quite informative and comprehensive. Being from a Westfield club website, I'd tend to tust it as a source. If anyone's going to be weight conscious, it's Westfield/Lotus 7 people.

rthy
26th May 2008, 12:35 AM
thats a fair point, I that case I personally think we should make a note next to these weights to show that it came form there.

However that T50 weigh conflicts with what I measured myself, so its either my scales are off or they are wrong.
