Concider a 450? Surely you dont need that extra little bit of power in the bush?

Rode a new fuel injected CRF450 the other day around my track, talk about responce, felt terrible to ride though, however it was straight out of the box with nothing done to the suspension what so ever.

No not necasarilly, more so for the road. 250 four banger has more than enough usable power up the bush.

Production of the 500's ceased a few years ago and as far as I know they can't be road regi'd. Not quite a trail bike either. Pretty insane either way, there's no debate in that.

cr500 e ceased in 03, were road regie,
cr500 r ceased 2000,

i had a 99 model for a year or two, awesome machine, ligament damage in the elbow sort of stuff,

now i ride an 07 cr250, dont have time for 4 strokes, so boring.

Also new husky is smelly, ktm are overrated for a company that deliberately tried to run itself into the ground to take money out of the business and crap.

Mark Savage.

Currently has a couple wr450f's, a yz250f, and 2 stripped race R1's. Might possibly also have a quad - not sure.

I don't think he gets to keep most of them but he cycles through them and does events for them. Awesome rider thats for sure.

hey guys took my bike for a ride, when i full throttle it in any gear the bike flat spots then conintues through the revs. any can help me out? could it just be dirty carb? or more a serious problem like piston n rings needing changing?

needs a bigger motor. thats a 125 coming on powerband. haha. nah, sounds like a fouled spark plug or clean out carby.
it could be low on compression. have you checked the piston and rings.

does it do it all the time or when you give it a good squirt does it get better, or remain the same.

go the ktm. my brother-in-law has the same bike but an 06 model. good fun.

if it gets better it sounds like fouling plug. what ratio u mixing your fuel.

little-cherri
2nd September 2009, 09:02 PM
just bought the bike, had about half a tank in it. he said it was running 32:1 i used to run 30:1 in my old bikes. so I might dump this fuel, put a new plug and and see how it goes. if its not better ill clean carb. if that doesnt work looks like piston n ring time.

matt99
3rd September 2009, 10:10 PM

After having always wanted a dirtbike i finally got one this year (only been wanting one for like 15 years hahaha).
Mostly got it cos mates who used to ride were getting back into it and it's not exactly a solo sport.
I bought a KTM 250 EXC 2 stroke for $500 and rebuilt the motor. So the engine is fresh, the wheel bearings, brake pads etc etc are all fresh too so although it looks a bit rough it's solid as. It's a 1997 model and to be honest in some areas they havn't changed much between then and now! The motors are very similar, same brembo brakes etc. mostly differences in the frame and suspension on the newer ones.
Great fun, 3rd gear slides everywhere, I like :).
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/0/7/3/34210.jpg

I also picked this up (impulse buy haha), it's a Husqvarna TE610 converted to super motard using SM610 parts (wheels and brake). It's not regoed and needs a bit of work (new timing chain and new rear wheel spacers) but it's learner legal and should be awesome to ride (scary perhaps haha). Not had time to work on it of late though, busy with my KTM and my two cars.

Neb, you'll have insane amounts of fun on that.

I had a 525exc road rego'd and even on motocross tyres I could still shred through the twisties. I could easily outride a roadie through twisties...but more open roads are a different matter. Still managed to crack 160km/h on it though.

If all goes wheel i should have wheels and a rigid rear end this weekend. FOund a guy with a 50 year collection..

Just gonna use it to commute to work on a cruise with my mates on the weekends and then i might sell it before i go to the states at the end of the year and come back with a roadster and a few frames.. ahhh dreams

crf450r and a cbr1000 is on the horizon.

I miss not having a bike and I rode my mate's crf450's (both '08 models) over the weekend and I'm pretty damn keen on an '08 model. After stepping off a 525 they feel so damn nimble. Certainly not as smooth as the trail weapon but christ I love the manouverability on the smaller/lighter/shorter bike.

Checking out an '06 model cbr1000 next weekend aswell. Full yoshi set up, fender eliminator, l.e.d tricky bits, pazzo levers, few other bits and only 10,000km's for a nice price.

My 05 WR250F had since brand new has about 6500km's on it which was done in the first 2 years when I lived in Newcastle. No I live in Melbs ridden it about 20 times in the last 3 years. Has a White Bro's E2 pipe and some basic mods like airbox cut out, throttle stop shortened, CDI YZ mapping, YZ cams, Dual stage filter, airbox snorkel removed, Tag T2 bars and some other stuff I don't remember.

Has been a great bike considering its been fully road registered the whole time and probably had as much on road as it has off. Even done a 300km trip on the freeway on it lol. Even though it doesn't have an alloy frame I can still bring it to most guys on newer bikes too love roostin people.

Bike looks pretty good man but ditch that helmet and buy a motocross one.

I know all the crap like aww but they are shit when youre going fast cause they catch the wind and rar rar rar but the motocross ones just suit supermoto so much more.

skit

I normally wear a moto helmet, but on fastish tracks they're too damn noisy and I find the wind distracting when it buffets you around. But above all, I consider the shoei to be safer than my moto helmet, so I'd rather be wearing it in a high speed get off. That aside, i prefer moto helmets for sure.

Bluterus
6th September 2010, 01:53 PM
So you race often?

Never worn a roadbike helmet so can't comment on noise. But I know my new helmet the bike sounds a hell of a lot louder than it did before.

If you are going fast on road depending on the speed and the openess of the road or track dirtbike helmets are bad. Mine in the bush or on moto tracks I've never had a problem but on the road mainly on the freeway at 100km/h if I lift my head too much or turn to check if cars are coming (I don't use mirror's) My neck just about get's snapped.

No mate, that was my first road race, and I got my ass kicked. As they say, in racing you either win, or you suck. No excuses though, it was a lot of fun.

It was a combined category, so all types of bikes. I finished the motard conversion the week before the event, so it was a challenge to learn a new bike, track and racing awareness all at once. Top speed there for me & my bike was around 140-145kph. The best motards can pull up to around 160kph, but theyre packing 50% more power, and have better riders who carry more speed onto the straight than I could.

So have you gone with a full setup? Are those wheels heavy? Are you using the standard caliper with new bracket or did you upgrade the standard caliper? How wide rear 4.25" or 5"? If you didn't upgrade the caliper do you get brake fade?

I didn't use the drz-sm gear, mainly because there was little available 2nd hand at the time I was building it. I used a mail order info kit to adapt mc22 (cbr250-rr) wheels. They're only 4" & 3" wide I'm fairly certain, so I am running 140/70/17 rear and 110/70/17 front, which is narrower than the 150/60 and 120 combo that dedicated motards run using 4.25 or 4.5 / 3.5 inch rims. I used dunlop alpha-10s, which appear to be the same as the old gpr70's which I was familiar with a long time ago. Most people had slicks and tyre warmers though.

The kit was around $90 from memory, and came with an adaptor to space the front brake caliper out to suit a larger disc. It also came with an adaptor ring to mount a gsxr-600/750 (08/09) front disc to the cbr hub. The kit also had dimensions for new wheel spacers which I had a guy at my work machine up. It all went together fairly well, and had no problems. I was a bit worried on the shakedown ride to work a few days before the race, but it was all fine. The brake calipers are standard. The rear disc is an ebay cbr item which is a bit thinner than an OEM honda one, which worked out better as it gave a little more clearance between the caliper. I only got it because the 2 x honda discs I had were bent to hell, no idea why as the wheels are dead straight.

I don't think the wheels are particularly heavy at all, that said, I didn't have a spoked motard set handy to compare them to.

Front brake was fine, but the track was Morgan Park, it's not notoriously hard on brakes as far as I know. Lever travel was getting a bit deeper toward the end of one of my quicker sessions, but this happens to road bike guys as well. Considering I was using standard dirt pads that were probably frying the performance was pretty good I thought. Races were only 6 laps though, not 45min motogp stuff.

Biggest problem I had over the weekend was shifting the weight bias forward to get more front grip/feel. My bike has stock springs and I'm 90kg, rear sag was way too much for circuit riding. Each session we dialed in rear preload, front compression and rebound, and raised the forks. The bike kept feeling better and better, and by the end of sunday the rear tyre wear was looking well used (as opposed to being overly shredded). But I still had a 1-2mm chicked strip on the edge of my front tyre, but the rear was well used right the edge. I'm no guru but that suggests to me I wasn't loading the front tyre enough on corner entry. That said I wasn't out to overstep my limit and crash, so I was content with making small progress each session.

Look forward to trying a smaller kart track event.

This is what I started with

and after a frame stretch, disc brake upgrade, 10" wheel upgrade, JZ tank swap, cafe racer seat, Fork upgrade, headlight upgrade, LCD tacho... everything has been changed. They are normally 49cc... this ones a 124cc stroker. Its bored, stroked, bigger clutch, heavier springs, new head, 24mm tuneable carby, lightened flywheel (re-wound for lighting coil/charging and its a machined CRF50 one)

They are completely road registerable.. but its sat in my loungeroom for about 2 years now as I couldn't be bothered finishing her off .. needs the top end reassembled

Just did a freshen up on the crf.

Went to a 31OZ flywheel to make the slow stuff more manageable, and its great its real hard to flame out in the seriously slow going. I like the tall first gear but it would just stall too easy especially on the uphill switchbacks I've been doing on some trails. Now its kinda best of both worlds, you have the tall first gear and its really hard to stall. Its also smoothed the delivery some which should help get traction and not just bust out like it used to.

Gave it a big fistfull up my steep grassy driveway and it cut nice square holes around the knobbies and hooked up ideally with no extra wheel spin.

I did some reading, and the 2008 model Hondas like mine made the hardest hit in their power delivery of almost any 450 4T of the last 5 years, mostly due to the enlarged carburettor and the lightest flywheel that Honda had ever put in the CRFS. This is what Ive been trying to manage with my tuning, and with the flywheel its done it. Cant wait to go for a longer ride and see if it helps with fatigue too. One handy thing they did was multi mapping for ignition. So you have a more manageable surge in first and second gear then the full power is unlocked with the 3/4/5th gear map. Right now its a great trailbike, for a motocrosser, haha.

Other recent mods include a trail tech stand, as Im sick of leaning it against shit all the time when I have to get off it.

I just fitted the white acerbis kit to it, and gave it a big clean, and also did both oil changes plus the filter.

Running sweet.

Might look into a different front tyre, as this front is shit.
