What sort of money would you be likely to spend?

If you've got a bit of coin you'll find something you'll love no worries.

When you say full road what type of riding will you be doing? I presume if it's for work it'll be used solely for commuting? What type of distances will you be travelling?

Road as in 60km per day to work and back in mild traffic... maybe take the car when its raining.. looking to save a bit of money on petrol, and being a learner dont want anything too big.

My budget depends, new ninjas go for just under 8g by the time their on road, that would be the max I would spend, would prefer to get one a few years old or go for something cheaper..

an older model cbr250r would go for like 4k maybe a bit cheaper so all depends what you wana spend. if your just using for a commuter Its age shouldnt matter much. I think 400's are learner legal too but that may not apply to sa.

Something around an 05 model cbr250r would go for like 5k

^^^ didn't think they made them in '05 I think you mean 05 complied...

You should be able to pickup a cbr250 (doesn't matter what year as long as its in good nick) for around the $4k mark. This will last you the full time you want a 250cc until you upgrade..

Although i have a mate that kept his for 4 years to commute on.. :)

And yep, Ae86sam is right, cbr production ceased well before '05.

Unless you want to have a little fun on the weekend I'd advise against going for a cbr250. Not sure what a bike in SA has to have to comply as a LAM but I'd be going for a larger cc, air-cooled cruiser style bike. Commuting on cbr wont be the funnest thing (due to riding position) and I'd be going for something which allows you to 'sit' in a more upright position. Head down to your local dealer(s), have a sit and even a test ride and see what suits you. Once you've done that you should have a rough idea of what you're looking for and then check bikes that are advertised privately (I'd advise against buying from a dealer so check out privately advertised bikes on bikesales and trado)

$8k will more than allow you to get a nice suitable bike. I'd also be spending no less than $1k on gear. DON'T skimp on gear.

Look dont bother woth something made in the 90s you would have to be nuts to spend 5grand on cbr these days with the amount of good bikes you can get 2nd hand.

if i were you (obviously abiding your state restrictions) i would have a look at a hyosung 250 or a 650. Both these are top learner legal bikes. put it these way your no casey stoner or crusty demon get something thats comfortable and rides well.

All cbr250/kawa220 are junk, very uncomfortable and plain out old and problematic.

Try and find yourself something you will keep for 2-3years.

breaka, its not that many km's for a bike of its age, its not exactly new :P

but its in great condition...

kick start, ppff, starts easy. being my mums bike she manages to be able to first it first or 2nd kick haha

its one of the quickest bikes that are LAMS approved (not sure if the rules vary from state to state)

yer i think your right i just read they stopped production in 1996, but i always see in for sale ads like 02 04 etc, so it must refer to when they were complied.

what replaced the cbr250rr? do they make a 250 sport bike anymore or just cruisers?

the harley looking things are pretty comfy to ride but slow as shit.

After looking around the ZZR's seem like a pretty good option, any body know what things to look out for on second hand ones?

The age of the cbr250r's put me off, and the fact most of them are imported, the cb250's are the naked style bikes right?

^^

and the age of ae86's or Xe7X dont??... Your not going to have a 250cc bike for more than a year or two, coz trust me you will wanna upgrade and you should be able to notice if its gonna last that long, plus its not like your gonna use it as much as a car (going to the shops, pubs (unless your stupid) and shit like that). I say just buy something around the 4-5g be whatever you can buy for that coz you will sell it when you relise you can ride 100kw bikes and have passengers on it instead of 25kw bikes that struggle to pull you along.

i bought a zx2r, for my first bike...still have it, (wanna buy?)

if i had to ride it everyday,it would be ok, but a zzr has a more up position.

For commuting (with a back pack) it may be more comfy....

I also heard they have soft suspension, but I've never noticed it. mustn't be riding hard enough :soldier:.

Rides awsome around town, not leaning over all the time too so a bit on the comfy side.

if you dont mind a naked bike go for a vtr 250. great for a learner. got heaps of torqe down low and mid(for a 250) and very easy to ride.my one is way easier than my brothers zzr250 to ride. only down side is dont really have much top end. probably only do 140kph tops.

Hey mate,

Take advise from someone who has checked alot of 250cc bikes for first time riders.

If you want something to commute on and also have a blast on the weekend get a 4 cyl 250cc. Zxr 250, Cbr 250, or a FZR 250 if your a taller person (longer reach to the bars). They are all old but take someone who knows what they are talking about to check the motor, bearings, brake discs and pads. I used to commute on a CBR and it was fine. You should be able to pick one up for about 3-4k if you look around enough.

CBR on bikesales in SA (http://www.bikesales.com.au/all-bikes/private/details.aspx?R=3061539&__sid=120EC5A51C5F&__Qpb=true&Cr=14&__Ns=p_Make_String%7c0%7c%7cp_Model_String%7c0%7c% 7cp_Price_Decimal%7c1&keywords=&__N=1432%20604%201430%201429%201428%204294967259%2 085%204294967064&SearchAction=N&seot=0&__Nne=15&trecs=15&silo=1400)

If you want a commuter only go for a twin with a comfortable sitting position, like a ZZR 250(parrarell twin), GPX 250(parrarell twin), VT250 (Also known as a spada, v-twin) or a VTR 250 (v-twin and a newer model).

These are more transport orientated.

Go and ride a few different ones and see what takes your fancy.. All in all it doesn't matter what everyone says on the net. Choose the one that feels good for you.

Know so many people considering a bike these days, myself included. QLD peeps get up to 600cc straight up, so 250's should come down in price a bit. Scary to think you could ride an R6 the day you get your license.

Depends what happens with my home situation... If I don't need to cart my dog around in the morning and I can commute on a bike, think I might have to consider it. Fortunately I have a bike mech as prolly my best mate, so searching would be easy. I usually car pool with my mum, haha, but getting from my place to hers while the Aristo is cold and likes revving to get to operating temp is rather costly.

the new 250 ninjas are a horizontal 2 cylinder....
from 89 to 99 they were 4 cylinder...
and also 62% of Ninja 250 owners are new riders, and 33% of that group is women...

new has - - 36 hp @ 11000 rpm and unknown for torque

old has - - 45 hp (33.6 kW) @ 16000 rpm and 18.07 ft·lbf (24.5 Nm) @ 11500 rpm ( max speed between 180 - 200 km/h )

Wrong, There is a limited amount of bikes you can ride, You cannot ride all 250cc bikes either, Here is the list of bikes you can and can't ride:

i for one am glad that they have changed the learner rules. im not talking about lams but last year before july you could get straight on your r license and go out and legally ride a busa.
i know i wouldnt have bothered to buy a 250 and would've jumped straight on an r6 and would be a worse rider for it. you definately learn alot on a 250 if u buy a decent one.
i love it. 19000rpm. mmm its like a 4a, but better

Zx2r. 89 model. Paid 3600 for it. Was looking at Zzr's but i think they are a bit gay. I'm not that in to v twins. And cbr's are way over priced considering they are more or less the same as my Zx2r.

Nice, I was looking at getting a ZX2r ninja, The ZZr's in my opinion don't have a sporty feel or look with the single seat (like the suzuki across) and to me they feel uncomfortable, Once I get my P's we will have to go for a ride or something.

When I got my bike I was talking to the sales guy about bike prices and mentioned that I was looking at CBR's and they were alot more expensive, He said the reasoning behind it is because most of the CBR's dealers get in need alot of work as they are generally thrashed due to the whole boy racer thing.

new power to weight rules wouldnt even pass a cr250 motocross bike as learner legal in regards to power vs weight, goes way over. Xr250 even from memory.

its a sucky new law, the 250s that can be ridden has been reduced not increased, so they will probably become more exxy. i think the vfr400 JUST passes.

I would get a motard or a dirt bike of some sort. you will pick up better control skills on one of these than on a wussy little road bike and they are so much easier to pass the p's test on. my 2cents anyways
