engine should mount to 4 k crossmember with mods...will sit back about 100mm further than Josh's(Josh also used a 4 k crossmember as it is more sump friendly)
so far
Car $122.50 +$100 in consumables to repair rust etc
engine $1000
gearbox $990
engine crane $200
Bellhousing ,flywheel.clutch setup etc $1300

still rising..............budget of $3000 already spent

don't need to ..
engine mounts should line up with crossmember ... may need offset bracket but meh thats easy
if you move the crossmember then you also move the inner mounts for the lca's etc...bad

DRFTPG
25th January 2008, 11:48 PM

dirty nissan...i think
may have something different from Toyota though....
got to get the engine position and mounting finalised then manufacture firewall.strip ,seamweld and reinforce engine bay + paint
then will seriously look at front suspension
rear leaf springs are away being reset 2 inches lower, extra leaf fitted and stiffened to about 7kg..
main issue will prob be the steering rack though as the engine and exhaust will sit very close to the column etc..

yep full cage ..no dash etc
exhaust will be custom extractors into 2 1/2 pipes 2 muffllers under rear floor into twin side pipes on both side a ( V8 supercar styles ).... i want flames
pedals are floor mount with slaves under the floor (105 series Alfa ) ..there's simply no room to run a standard pedal box setup will not run a brake booster

check Josh's thread on HR.com he briefly goes over what he did to the rack head to combat the clearance issue. if you mount yours further back than he did it might be a BIG issue :P

what are you doing for extractors?? or are you handy with pipe as well  again there are some good pics in that thread in relation to pipe layout

yes i have spoken to Josh
that is thew main reason the engine will sit further back.Josh said he would move his back further if he was to do it again
i'll make the extractors for it ,can get the mandrel bends etc.on Josh's car the column goes between the extractor and the block, because this is a pure track car i can run the exhaust where ever ..may yet run it through the inner guard to alleviate any clearance issue
will cross that bridge when i come to it
seen all the pics on HR but it's better when you can see the car in the flesh as you get better perspective regarding clearance etc

engine is now bolted in
removed factory engine mounts then reversed them right to left as they are angled aluminium brackets
cut 25mm off the top of the crossmember, engine mounts and welded a strip of 5mm steel across the top of the cut off section
drilled plate and dropped engine in over bolts
engine is solid mounted (no rubbermounts)
couldn't move the engine back quite as far as i wanted because the steel sump sets the maximum distance you can go back
Engine has about 5mm clearance off the crossmember
the crossmember is mounted as per 4k ....not spaced down
sump sits in line with the bottom of crossmember
steering rack has been slightly rolled for clearance.... will fix it properly ............

engine will be out again tomorrow so the crossmember can be finished
and i may yet space it down 10mm to allow better bonnet clearance

funny.... but this engine in a ke would prob be easier to work on than my old 4agc in the 86........

well it depend on whether i can get low profile rubber mounts etc
may just use a piece of 10mm thick rubber between the crossmember and engine brackets
don't want to space the crossmember down too far (max of 20mm )
car will twist alot i reckon, but will reinforce as much as possible to try to limit it
full weld in cage should help....

I'll keep a track of the thread as well, keen to see some of the finer details in specs and getting it all fitted :2thumbs:

nice sounding good dude, i like the way nothing is to custom, just modified parts from other cars, makes life way easier and a smarter way of doing it. How do u plan on doing the peadle box ect?

pedals will be floor mount ( alfa 105 series ) with slave cylinders mounted under the floor...thats the way Alfa did it 40 yrs ago.......
no brake booster.

holy crap. This car is going to be epic.

Absolute best of luck, it's good to see how you're installing the 1UZ in detail.

Only suggestion i have to make:

I couldn't recommend using rubber engine mounts enough. seriously. if you don't it's either going to:
a ) Rattle to pieces
b ) crack the windscreen
c ) warp panels
d ) warp chassis.

all in time though.

An excellent project mate, i look forward to seeing it progress.

UZE70 FTW!

ueo has undescribeable talents also lol.

if you do it that way couldnt you just use clutch masters and run lines straight to your calipers???? might be a litlle cheaper??? and easier to do?

Fuck what a beast.
Why not use rubber mounts and maybe opt to modify your bonnet?

Might be cheaper then a broken windscreen

Good luck with the build man, its going quick can't wait to see it

They look pretty schmick, design is a good compromise, however, the next question is whether they're gonna clear your steering column....

I'd recommend getting that sorted out first, or at least mocking it up, and THEN doing a mock up of the extractors.

Measure twice, fabricate once and pray to god.

Jesus got inspiration, im gonna get hard into my car today and finish this stupid mock up and get the engine out and off to the builders.

In other news those headers look nice id go the black ones personally.
also the peddle set up will be very cool to see.

Hilton...
you can't just use clutch slaves
you need brake master cylinders to equally distribute to the front and rear brakes
the alfa ones are the go as they have a remote reservoir and are set up to run dual circuit
Diff will be RN 142 hilux with r31 disc brake conversion prob use a 4.1 4 pinion lsd centre to start

true, didnt think of that.....sounded like a good idea at the time.

thanks for the positive comments guys

trying to sus out steering issues ( firewall is back 180mm) atm
need to change the steering colmn to something shorter i think
went wrecker hunting and the only rack i could find that has a larger spacing between the mounts was a crappadore ... so i will perservere with the factory rack
am still undecided though ..thinking about converting to power steer

am trying to make 2 of everything as i go so that i have spares/templates if i wish to do another conversion at a later date

was there a reason why you chose a panel van, terry? as opposed to a sedan ke70 (purely for something different, or bigger engine bay etc.)?

I'm just thinking that the lateral loads on the leaf spring rear is going to make it really unpredictable and bouncy whilst sliding.

I'm sure you have done your research before you started, but i'm just curious.

have brand new engine mounts crossmember remodified to suit

steering is now all sorted and all bolted/welded into place
am currently panelling firewall and blocking all holes that are not required (booster wiper motor cableand wiring holes )
