K so my nan bought this T18 brand new in 1979. She died in 1992 and She gave it to my dad. My dad then gave it to my little brother, who basically rally'd it and trashed it. Then the alternator went on it and the battery kept going flat, so my brother just dumped it in the backyard and left it there. So i thought i would pull it out of the grass and start fixing it up.

Rust is aplenty. Pics below.

Plans:-
Fix all rust and respray
Mild 4age na.
Brake upgrades disc rear.
Stereo
17 inch rims.

it will be like a daily driver with reasonable power. I wont be drifting it or anything. Kinda just like, respect for my grandma to fix it up since its been rotting away. I'm hoping it will turn out good.

Heres pics of it now. And some of the rust i have cut out of it.

As you can see its been sitting for quite some time.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166776.jpg

Some weeds made their way thru the bonnet lol. I also found a blue tongue lizard sitting on the front engine crossmember, heh.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166777.jpg

Good old 3T-C, Shame it has to go.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166778.jpg

Moved it under the carport where it will stay for months no doubt. New Guard and front bar needed. The ones off the black wreck arent bad so i'll be using them.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166779.jpg

Bit of rust in the back lol.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166780.jpg

I cut all that rust out, ready for a new plate. (painted it black to stop rust while i waited for welder (borrowed off a mate)
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166781.jpg

I bought this T18 from the local wreckers for $250. its a pathetic rust bucket with no rear axles, but parts for these are gettign very very rare and its got spare parts all in the back of it, so i have like 3 of every chrome strip, spare windows, spare dash, etc etc.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166782.jpg

I cut this piece out to repair the rust in the other one.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166783.jpg

Plate welded in.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166784.jpg

Will keep the thread updated as time goes by. it will probably take most of the year and $8k before its done i reckon.
The interior on the one from the wreckers is black so i'll be swapping that over and adding small trims in the same colour i paint it. Like inserts in the doortrims etc.
The current interior is blue so it kinda limits my options for outside colour, but black will go with pretty much any colour.

Ive done a fair bit so far this weekend.

Pics can do the talking.

Engine is out.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166791.jpg

Still a fair bit of junk to come out.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166792.jpg

Note the rust behind the brake booster etc.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166793.jpg

Brake booster removed ready to get at the rust.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166794.jpg

Dash, steering column, pedal box etc all out.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166795.jpg

Note the rusty battery tray, its gonna be removed and battery is going in the back.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166796.jpg

All rust removed from around brake booster.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166797.jpg

Battery tray removed and some bog is in there to take up any imperfections in the surface from grinding etc.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166798.jpg

Front apron/radiator support (whatever you call it) sanded back ready for primer. Note brake booster area primed.
Also note engine crossmember and steering system has been removed.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/166799.jpg

So thats it, I'm pretty happy with the progress so far.
Theres that many car parts stashed everywhere its not funny. Its amazing they can fit that many parts into a vehicle.

To be continued....

good work man,
you work quick,
in a matter of minutes haha
looks like its all comeing together quite well
even if your not going to use it for anything but daily driving, definitly get some new suspension,
just standrad bits new, so that its not sagged/rooted like I'm sure the springs and schocks currently in it would be? eh?
also while the engine is out maybe think about going rack and pinion steering, its alot tighter and smoother than steering box?

but yeh, just a few suggestions, i can tell from the work youve done already its gunna be good
what colour you thinking of painting it?

Yep I'm gonna get that along with the AE71/86 crossmember i'll need to install the 4A.

Not sure yet, Thinking Flouro orange like the BA falcon, Or maybe the Aqua colour on the new-ish commodores.

ae71
28th March 2008, 05:07 PM
i vote no to aqua..

also why 17's? being the style of the car i don't think it would really suit it. 14/15's are the way to go imo. 14's for properness or 15's for better performance and availability of descent performance tyres etc.

VBman

They look good with 17's.

Check out this wagon it looks sick.

http://www.boostcruising.com/database/members/files/EFI8220041211113414pslfile1.jpg

Altho I'm thinking maybe 16's for better handling and a more comfy ride. But i do want it to look good and personally i think 14" rims look shit.

Long way to go till i pick wheels anyway.

Looking like an awesome buildup.

My personal observation is that really modern colours look a bit odd on old cars...but its your car. Also the tall and skinny wheels, old car look is for taste-challenged gentleman of mediterranean extraction and rotors mostly.
Low, wide, fat little rims and you'd have a very mean looking car.

I really like T18s, to be honest I didn't want mine, but now I've got it, I've also got the bug to play with it because they are just fun little vehicles.

props to anyone who does their own panel work on there diy home project.

www.auszoku.com.au

go have a dig around there, the site is basically filled with pictures.

if you look for te72s and similar on there, you will start to get an idea (and probably start to like) the type of styling that really suits these cars and that is applied to them in their native country.

looks like youve got yourself the right bell housing there too, jdm 86 to suit the t18.

are you considering using an ae71/86 cross member and rack and pinnion? would be a big improvement.

apparently the pedal box ect from te72 to ae71 is different, maybe this points to it being more similar to an ae86.. you might find the column from one of them might be suitable. i can help you out with measurements and photos if you like as I'm at that stage of disassembly right now.

good luck with it.

chrome is best left on the bumpers in my opinion...

also ride depends also on the spring rates aswell, for example going from a 195/50/50 back to a 195/60/14 has given a lot more grip and much less front end bounce as my front springs are aprox 10kg.

Top work so far.

I'm another voter against the 17's, you have mentioned 16's as a possibility though so i thought i'd let you know that rewinds are available in that size, 15's would be better though as you could actually have a bit of tyre with your wheel...

...also if you don't like the Rewind a B-Bomb may be more your style, either would look dope.

Best of luck with the build i will stay tuned for updates.

ps: buy rims & tyres and fit susp b4 paint.

Have seen a couple with the old 15" simmons, nice look. Though you could probably get nicer sized 14s for the same money.

16s would look pox. They need small wheels as any more diameter makes them look really high.

ae71
22nd April 2008, 09:08 PM
anything bigger than 15" wont go on... i don't care of the width, offset or tyre size as soon as you sit them on the hub they will explode, t-18 will reject them!!! hahahaha

Its your car style it how you want. Better off for you to enjoy it then others to.

If you need any bits and bobs for the car let me know, i have two complete shells (no drivetrains) in my back yard, so chance are i can help you out with parts. Anything you want, just pay for postage.

ok ok! i will go for 15s

The problem is, I'm kinda over the car atm, i think its cos its winter, and cold, but i havent really touched it for about 4 weeks. I'm waiting for the "desire" to come back, co si think it will, But atm i don't really have the desire to work on the car, so i think if i work on it while the desire is not there, i will take shortcuts and skip things i will regret later.

Is that ok or have i failed?

Happens to me all the time. I go through phases.

I think when your in the mode for a few months, get heaps of shit done in that time, and you can afford to leave it for a few weeks.

Keep at it, you will get there eventually. It has something to do with no time frame aswell I think, with no rush to do everything..
