View Full Version : And now for something completely different...

so... i thought that in its current state of development it was worth while posting up my corolla.

initially i bought a red ke70 for 500 bux as a daily... well that didn't last long. within a week it had falcon springs and a locked diff. oh and a lip off a magna.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167035.jpg

good fun but god the 4k was slow. esspecially when your other car is a turbo skyline... so that had to be fixed.
i knocked up a quick j-pipe turbo setup utilising a rodeo (i believe) turbo, which was waaaaay too big and a zenith carby from a 1.8L volvo. pitty i never got it tuned.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167036.jpg

after a few teething problems, it ran nice till the heater core blew, leaked water, and popped the head gasket.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167037.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167038.jpg

and melted the spark plug away.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167039.jpg

so i replaced the head gasket and shaved a little bit off the fuel needle to richen it up. it ran much better this time round... till it developed another severe water leak, i got pissed off and thrashed it anyway, and popped again.

out that came and in went the 3tc. thanks to lawson for supplying the motor etc.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167040.jpg

here's the modded crossmember i made to fit it.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167041.jpg

with that i put in t18 struts and brakes. with the t18 steering knuckles it had bugger all steering lock so i cut and shut the steering arms shorter. works a treat.

i ended up having waaaaaaaay too much fun in it one night and bending it so i bought a ae71 that had had a 4k conversion (yes i know. what were they thinking?) for $250.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167042.jpg

the previous owner thought the head gasket was blown. it wasn't. i got it running again, did a skid then pulled the motor out. in went the 3t.

i also went about converting the t18 struts to coilovers using some china sleeve kits off ebay. $20 for a set of 4. WITH SPRINGS! so cheap! work fine too.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167043.jpg

i took it to mallala for a drift practice where the head gasket blew on the 2nd lap. seriously... toyota cooling systems and head gaskets are FUCKING CRAP!
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167044.jpg

so i fixed that one...
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167045.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167046.jpg

and it lived once again.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167047.jpg

then toyota struck again a few weeks later when it started burning more oil than petrol. out came the 3t.

now I'm quite sick of toyota engines... so I'm fixing the problem atm...
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167048.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167049.jpg

some prototype engine mounts. yet to be reinforced.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167050.jpg

and bam!
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167051.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167052.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167053.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167054.jpg

funny... the bonnet closes.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167055.jpg

so... plans are:
internally stock rb30e
custom manifold. high mount.
big turbo. unsure what.
megasquirt II ecu.
ford edis-6 crank pickup running 6 individual coil packs
gtr injecters
cut up the trans tunnel to fit a gearbox.
lots of tuning.

should be fun.

then i'll break some diffs.

i have no timeline for this project so it'll happen as time and money permits.

cheers,
declan.

nice work!! interesting conversion.

thats what this forum needs more of.
less talking about conversions and more doing.

how far back does the gear shifter sit?
does the sump clear the steering rack ok?

what is the car being built for?

Decs
31st March 2008, 02:22 AM
gearshift... i'll find out when i source a gearbox for it. all i know is that I'm gonna need to pretty much make a new trans tunnel about twice as wide and much higher.

sump clears the rack fine. fits like a glove. only problem is it just touches the swaybar cause i've mounted it as low possible as in a vein attempt at gaining a decent centre of gravity and some bonnet clearance.

whats it built for? good question. I'm a drifter at heart but i have a drift car already and i very much doubt its gonna handle very well with that much weight over the front. it'll do good burnouts, might be ok down the quarter mile. i'll street it for a while. till i get defected i spose. its just an experiment really. something different, something fun. something a little silly. just the way i like it.

my biggest concern is the diff. r31 skyline diff is about a foot too wide... any other suggestions?

set about malesting the corolla yesterday.

first we ripped out the interior.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167708.jpg

then cut a huge hole in the trans tunnel... tried to fit the gearbox, failed, and cut a bigger hole, failed again, cut a bigger hole, failed again, cut more hole. fixed. shifter sits about 200mm further back but oh well. steering wheel spacer and some pedal mods perhaps (if it annoys me too much). sorry about the poorly lit photo.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167709.jpg

motor sits nice now.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167710.jpg

funniest thing. the standard ae71 speedo cable just bolted on!
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/8/4/3/167711.jpg

now to pull everything back out. clean it up. make manifolds. finish off engine mounts. do a little dance. put it back in.

cheers to andy for lending a hand.

Maybe you could make a custom shifter (with a big bend) to combat the position of the shifter? I have seen it done before on CA conversion i think, might work for you as well. Bit easier than moving your peddles etc closer to you. Props to working so quick as well man.

what cooling mods you using ?
rb30et gets extrmely warm in a r31/VL

the same motor in a smaller space is going to get warmer, especially with a highmount and single cam isnt obviously as good as twin cams

are you going to be running special front mount set up?
or side/v/top mount
what rad you using ? rb30?
oil coolerr etc etc
be cool to see this thing finished

Decs
23rd April 2008, 11:43 PM
will be a ceffy/s13 rad most probably. rb30 is way too tall. will also sport an oil cooler and a front mount intercooler. small one tucked in behind the bumper.

spent a few hours welding the manifold together tonight. got a new welder and I'm still learning what all the knobs do. it has lots. started playing with spot welding it. looks cool i rekon so i did pretty much all the welds that way. doesn't blow holes as easy.

only an s13 rad?

I'm running an s13 radiator on my 4age and thta still gets fairly warm.

have you looked into thermo fans? and other alternative cooling systems?

Decs
23rd April 2008, 11:55 PM
i don't want to run thermo's but i'll have to. viscous clutch fans kick thermo's arses but i can't fit one in.

rad will depend on what i can fit in there. i've dummy fitted a ceffy one and it fits ok. it'll be mounted infornt of the rad support where the intercooler is cause the hamonic balancer is about 20mm from the chassis.

a standard cooling system thats in good condition in a 31 will happly handle a turbo setup on a 40deg day.

decs has run a single core import R31 radiator on a 40+deg day out mallala spending most of the time idleing on the track with no problems.

with a good radiator, correct coolant mix and thermos setup on a good shroud will keep the bay temps down easy.
and running a oil cooler will help yet again.

it's only when you run twin turbo with only oil cooled turbos and no additional oil coolers as i did, when you start to have temp issues with a good cooling system.

thats my old RB30 in the rolla. it ran happly it's whole life in my 31. will continue too for a while longer. on the limiter.

only a t18 t50 one.

got a db9 serial cable today. plugged in the stimulator. plugged in the near complete megasquirt to the pc. loaded the firmware onto the ms2 chip. ran megatune. everything checked out. with the stim plugged in i could see the rpm,tps,02,etc guages on screen changing as i twiddled the knobs on the stimulator. its crazy seeing all this shit work. I'm so chuffed!

my housemate has assembled his megaview so we powered it up and plugged it into my megasquirt with the stimulator on. its awesome. it displays EVERY engine parameter u can think of. even shit like barometric compensation ffs. u can then select a parameter and fine tune it then save it to the megasquirt even whilst driving. basically like a microtech hand controller.

megasquirt cost me about $300 once i had it in my hands... plus a shitload of time soldering. still gotta finish it and wire it to the motor yet.

stimulator was $95 USD.

megaview was $135 USD.

its good cause in building it all you learn how everything works so it gives u a great understanding of everything. so much better than just plugging one in. well that is if your a freak like me that wants to fiddle with everything and regularly sit in your lounge room till 3am soldering.

the LED closest to the db9 connector flashes everytime an injector is fired.

the next one lights up under warmup mode. turn the coolant temp pot meter on the stim and in goes on or off.

the last one lights up under acceleration enrichment. it your turn the TPS pot meter really fast or to full it lights up.

was in barker bp minding my own business putting fuel in at about 9pm.

yes regency. can't be arsed with reg anyomore. its a track car. i'll get over it one day.

back to the rolla...
i didn't have to solder it. you can buy completed units for about $430 US. i did it cause a its cheaper, b it interests me, and c it gave me a great indepth understanding of how it works which will make wiring and tuning much easier.

so i now have the base settings in place. in theory, i can wire it up and it'll start. i've set the cold start and cranking enrichments etc.

megatune is a very capable program it seems. does datalogging too. means i can plug in a wideband and go for a blat with it in datalogging mode. then i can turn that into a graph and see exactly what it did at exactly every point in the rev range.

some pics of megatune running with the stimulator pretending to be the rb30. the MAP guage always reads 97kpa cause its not recieving any manifold vacuum from anywhere. if i stuck a tube on the map sensor and sucked it would change.

the basic fuel map. rpm vs kpa vs volumetric efficiency. basically a percentage of the amount of fuel required to match the entire volume of the combustion chamber.

sweet dude, I'm starting to learn how to do all that tuning sort of thing, been reading my microtech book alot and doing some interwebz research on it.

lookds like you got your shit going on.

i have a question, i may have totally over looked it, but the pics of the manifold and turbo on the engine don't show any sort of wastegate??? unless thats not the turbo you will be using? maybe its just the angle of the pics

well spotted. i still have to add in the wastegate outlet. I'm waiting till i get the wastegate so i can decide where to put it before i start putting holes in the side of the collector.

started the wiring lastnight. stripped back a standard rb30 loom. means i have colour coded wiring and a lot of it is already set up. got ecu power switched through a relay. wired in the earths. hooked up the injector power feed and the signal to the 2 injector banks. turns out i can retain the standard crank angle sensor in the dissy. god i wanna drive it!

i bought a laptop yesterday so i can tune it in the car.
