Hey, this could be well known I'm not sure but i was keen to know all this stuff and just stumbled across so thought id throw it up for everyone. ive never seen it till now

http://users.tpg.com.au/users/loats/techni.../gearboxes.html (http://users.tpg.com.au/users/loats/technical/ma61/gearboxes.html)

the w55 seems the closest to t50, (ratio wise) and i love my ratios for our tracks so ill, prob stick close to them

the w57 and w58 are meant to be "close ratio" boxes.

the w57/8 both benifit from a 1.0:1 drive 4th gear.

the main difference between the two is the overdrive gear (5th)

with the w58 better for highway cruising

the "W" box is almost identical on the outside. and made of alloy.

the only way to tell them apart is to figure out the 5th gear ratios.

so with the box on 5th gear, if you were to turn the input shaft 20x (cluch end), the tail shaft would turn.

w55 23.53 turns

w57 23.22

w58 25.54

the more turns you use, the more acurate the result i.e. w55 x 100 = 117.65 / w57 x 100 = 116.14

so as you can tell this is really only good for w55/7 to w58 comparison

to tell the difference between w55 and w57 select 1st and turn input shaft 20x, the tail shaft will turn

w55 4.89

w57/8 5.31

this is the only way i'm aware of to identify these boxes without opening them?

anyone correct me if i'm wrong

almost all factory rwd gearboxes have a 1:1 4th.

55s have an alloy sandwich plate.

57/58.. honestly, the difference.. who cares? condition is more important.

alot of people do mate.

LIKE THE ONES TRYING TO FIGURE OUT IF THEY ARE ACTUALLY PAYING A PREMIUM FOR A W58 AND NOT GETTING RIPPED OFF!!!

slydar

why would you pay a premium for a 58 over a 57? theyre the same thing except a slight difference in 5th gear ratio.

what i am saying is, id have a low k fresh import 57 over a worn out old 58 from some locally delivered shit box any day.

are you completely missing the point?

dude i am providing objective information so that people have a guide to work it out for themselves.

your opinion is great, and probably well supported. but its useless in telling the difference in the boxes. get the picture??

i drive both box'es... and theres really not much noticable difference between the w57 and w58, theres about 300 to 400rpm difference in 5th in a 6mge, my personal preference i'd say get the w57 or failing that just get the cheepest one.

Easiest way to tell if you have a W58 (far easier than pulling it apart) is to just leave it out in the rain for a day..

The iron/steel sandwhich plate will go a lovely rusty brown/black

None of the others will do this, as they are all alloy

57s are steel sandwich too. only 55s are alloy.

Sorry to go off topic, but while we are stating W gearbox info, does anyone know the reccomended oil rating to use in them? going to change mine soon so would like to know what other people have had success with.

Good point,

but it would be much easier to just get a file to check what material it is hehehehe (not a serios stab there)

thanks for all the extra info too everyone!!

PS XaeRob you could just go down to supercheap/autobarn etc and look up the car that your box came from in the trans oil section

75W-90 is the general consensus

Just to add more to discussion (and for my own gain).

So how much will it cost me including bellhousing, W55/57/58 and transmission oil and at what point do we need it?

Hypo NA - Best box?
Turb 4A - Best box?

MARKE70
4th June 2008, 09:40 PM
NA id say T50 still,

the torque of turbo/SC engines is what hurts them.

Bellhousings seem to be around $600 for the phillipines one - Are they any good????

As for the boxes themselves I'm not sure.

Can someone list expected prices for W55, 57, 58

biggo
4th June 2008, 10:51 PM
W55 - $5

W57 - $50

W58 - $50,000,000

well thats in my opinion anyway. a W5X gearbox is a w series in IMO, it wount brake unless your called 70XIN

also are those phillipine bellhousings good???

xsoarerx
6th June 2008, 12:40 AM
i wrote this up a while ago on my forum so maybe this might explian it better (and if its wrong then my bad :P), i was talking about putting one in a jzx83 with a 2jzge NA whaler.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
the W55 to W58 box'es are the same... (different to the W50 to W54 serise)
the W55 is the base box (base gears)
the W56 (very rare apperently) was used for light trucks and commericals (hiace and hilux i guess?) it has taller 1st and 2nd gear to accelarate heavery loads off the line.
the W57 and W58 are considered the "close ratio" gearbox even tho its not a real close ratio box...
the W57's 5th gear (0.861) is different to the w58's (0.783) rev to 4th the same.

they have 4 different mounting positions.
MA61 has the most foward
then...
Ma70...
something else
then Sa63 (2s celica) most far back.

alot of people rant and rave about the R154 and V160 but at the end of the day will you be pumping that much power into one? its the same as the T50ddy in the 86's, they can take a pretty big blasting before giving it up. the W5X box are much the same.

i read of people putting the R154 behind "big power" 7mgte's in the states while the W58 box has been put behind almost every australian V8, V6 and L6 as well... (check castle main rod shop for adapters) and the vh41de guys (nissan v use them as well.

also the other "stronger" toyota box'es are more expensive and require tunnle mods to fit... espically in the ma61/z10

w58's w55 and w57 come in
MA61,
Z1X soarer (good luck tho) and manual
Z20 soarer (if you do find one being parted/wrecked with a g bellhousing... i will buy!!!)
RT142 corona
apperently SXE10/GXE10 come with W58s'
some 2WD hilux's come with them (not sure which ones tho, early ones i guess)
RA60's
RA65's
SA63's[/b]

reecegze: to be perfectly honest, don't bother asking .. try and find a local sydney-ite that has a day off, lure him (or her!?!) with drinks, and get them to SHOW you what to do

some things can never easily be explained, just gotta help someone else and you'll get it

Kaizen garage, AJPS, japan, indonesia... They are VERY easy to come about these days mate, do some searching :turned:

Hokey
25th June 2008, 07:04 PM
so w55 is just as strong as w58? and what sort of power can they comfortably take all day drifting?

70XIN
25th June 2008, 10:49 PM
No, definitely aren't as strong, but there's not that much in them..

200-250rwkw on a 'under-2-litre' should be good, again, if you're changing gears far too fast far too often, you will still break selector forks and such

The gears themselves are fairly hard to strip, i have tried on a few :turned:
