brett himself would be best to explain it, and I don't want to put words in his mouth, but yeah he backed the damping setting off from 6 to 4 and got the traction needed, but as a result in his words made the car real 'twitchy'

edit: the next time i see him i'll point him to this thread, but hes not on the internet much

I want to see these interior shots.

Mainly ones of the internal chassis?

slydar
18th August 2008, 07:12 PM
ok.

because i know he cbf'd and wouldn't really mind..

front is

hsd c/o

s13 sr brakes drilled/slotted.

straighten steering knucke (cut weld) ackerman reduction

s13 lca, rose jointed (cut from my old lcas that came in my jap car) set up to be slightly longer than standard s13 arms

rose joint on the sway bar link

those really common jdm sway bars (the blue ones, not cusco)

pretty sure the tension rod is r33, pillow type for sure, adjustable height on the bracket.

think he has some aftermarket tie rod ends, rack ends are just whatever was long enough

rack is quaife, with extra teeth cut.. don't ask how. i was shaking my head..

rack housing is also modified to allow more travel. pretty obvious mod if you think about it..

trust tower brace

everything under there is painted machine greay or a gold colour.

engine is s14, vct removed/disabled, s13 type power fc i think, small cams can't remember brand, tomei rocker stoppers and cam gears, hks gt2510, hks twin plate, rb25 na box (same as rb20det) with sr bell, short shifter. i know it makes around 180 rwkw, tuned by charlies motors, wire by ant. the ic is just a chinese one.

rear half of the driveline is 1pc shaft, diff is 4.3 locked centre E series, housing is tarago type so about +20mm track each side. rear is equal length 4 link, brett made the links, diff has extended lower brackets, huge dash 1 million breather/filler on top, welded on brackets for s13 rear discs and calipers, nicely warped bearing carier on one side ;) it has trd blue rear 8ways, shortened and coilovered.

tunnel is modified, from rear seat tie rail back its raised, also the rear floor above the axle as well for diff/tailshaft clearence. apparently the diff sits above the old floor line at static. rails are c notched too. he runs an s15 pump in tank as a lift pump, and a bosch 044 or similar for rail pressure. surge tank in the boot, all braided lines.

wheels are custom widened using new outer halves. theyre all about 9.75" wide.. with the fronts are like 9.25 i think. theyre all made from mostly free (some damaged) xr4s, about 6.5 to 7.5" wide.. but the back spacing is usually very close to the same, meaning the widths/offsets come out ata about the same. has nice products long wheels studs all round. i don't know the offset, its never really been calculated. is more than -20. the wheels where made, biggest ones picked and the guards built to cover them. theyre virgin sheet metal, made my brett, then smoothed by tony. theyre rasied 2" front, 3" rear, i think thats just the crease at the body line.

the cage is animal, and really really nicely designed.

in addition to the normal 6 points with intrusion, it has tie bars from the rear leg to main hoop joined at the intrusion bar height, tie bar from the this point to the tunel then back up to the other side. and a single rear diagonal. its runs close enough to the body at the a/b pillar/roof to be welded to it. also has the towers triangulated.

the car was made from just about ALL 2nd hand mates rates parts, I'm sure alot of you would be really surprised to know how much it cost to build.

there are no chassis mods other than the ones described.

As far as I can tell from reading what other have said the "internal chassis" is just the boxes for the equal length rear end....
but I too am hanging out for some more technical shots..

I tried to find the one of his front suspension the other day buy now the pic doesn't work... :(

When you say he's in HPI, do you mean some action shots or an actual feature on his car.????

PS the shots so far are great...

I think i've only come across one of them before... rest are all new to me...

Many thanx

in other words awesome, but within reach of mere mortals.

dimitri, if we used your book smarts, and my ability to exploit book smarts

kaibeecee
18th August 2008, 07:29 PM
just to add on what dimitri wrote:

- swaybars are espelir ones, 25mm front, 18mm rear

- tension rods are S13, with 3 height adj. holes (i've got the R33 gt-r ones if thats what youre thinking of)

-rack ends are MX73 cressida, tie rod ends are S15

-cams are 256in 264ex

-braided brake lines, pads are endless, brake MC uses relocation of the resovoir (from a late model honda) to avoid the braces

-line lock kit installed

-hydraulic handbrake made by himself, braided lines and carbon handle

-and the 4-link boxes intersect with the cage frame. there are rear shock tower box braces that brace down from the inner walls to the floor, cupping the towers on a 45deg angle as well

-fuel lines run along passenger side tunnel affixed to a alloy bar tec-screwed into the tunnel

its all the small details that add up

thats all i can remember atm

So does the thing actually handle? It looks nuts but yeah.

What does he think of it?[/b]

youve seen the videos right? slides turn 2 in 5th gear.. might handle ok? also seems fair competitive in drift state.. against dudes running toyo proxes ect.. he recently "upgraded" to Meathead #1 535s... first comp he was on achiles.

like obviously you can see, the rails are less than 50mm off the ground. but most of the time, the suspension doesnt compress both wheels evenly, and the rails are near the middle, so it does have an almost workable ride height... just...

i havent been in it, kaibeecee has.

but ive spoken to brett about it and apparently its really easy to drive. steering effort was a question on my mind, super negative offset steerers and a quaife, but its not too bad. apparently its REALLY fast compared to before, which he mainly puts down to the 4 link.. fair call.

really i think what makes it work though is the ride height. anything that low to the ground is gonna slide ok if it has some semblance of decent suspension geometry, which it does. the lower the cg, the better for drifting.

there are a few things that i think could be improved, those rca style ball joints, and maybe some mods to the PH bar location.

i just love to see cars like this because it just proves to people that low cars can still handle well. you just need to put that bit more effort in :)

I'm quite interested in how he cut the extra teeth into the rack, dodgy or not.

I am currently looking into doing it for a mate, and while i currently only have the stock rack to go off at the moment (quaife is still in car), the way i see it is you need to weld the rest of the flat section of the rack, put it in a lathe and turn it back to size, then mill the extra teeth in? The issues I am thinking of at the moment is that the welding will possibly distort the rack.
