even if it makes a black hole, it will take atleased 100,000 years to be big enough to kill us.

it will just continue to pass through our earth , like so many other cosmic rays do, unnoticed for a long time to come.

Well, for starters the LHC was tested well over a month ago, and secondly there are many particle colliders around the world that have been in operation for decades, and they haven't cause us any grief so far.

For those sane people that would like to know how it works and why the world won't end, try here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthrea...hreadid=2924802 (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2924802)

they werent even coliding atoms today...

they were testing if they could accelerate a laser beam all the way around the chamber.

'end of world' isnt for another few weeks yet - relax! haha

Whoa there! Screw all that techno-babble. I prefer to learn about the LHC through the medium of rhyme.

they black holes, IF produced may not just disappear like the millions of mini black holes created in our atmosphere, as down here we have gravity. But out in space where this is an everyday occurrence, they just disperse. So its a tossup to whether the the different environment is capable of supporting them without them collapsing a few micro seconds after being created. If they can, we fucked :). I think that is the major concern with it. but I say do it, the amount of potential knowledge makes it worth the risk

Also, one theory is maybe why we haven't found any intelligent life in space if cause they all make LHC like devices, and destroy themselves in black holes, leaving just black holes in the wake of their planets former position. Also this last line is a joke:P

but seriously, keep a crowbar with you, just incase
