Boring back story. Really, who reads these things?
After scouring Gumtree, eBay, Tradingpost and Carsales religiously in search of either a 2.0 MK2 Escort; 2.6 Sigma Scorpion; E30, 323i Coupe; L20B Datsun coupe; or a cheap, rough MX5 and not finding anything in my price range of $2500 (base purchase), after a few months I'd actually started to give up on my search for the time being and learn to enjoy my BA4 Prelude. Yeah, I know. Impossible, right? FWD Honda garbage.

Wednesday afternoon I received a call from my dad asking If I had seen the 320i E30 on Gumtree. I hadn't but being the interweb troll that I am, the page was in front of my eyes before he could even hang up the phone.

The ad read:

BMW 320i selling as wreck

up for sale is my BMW 320i

it has a blown diff or tailshaft, meaning it doesnt move so will need a trailer for pick up.
brand new tyres just put on
new front suspension
was my daily up until it died and drove perfectly. low kms with only 217 000
5 speed manual

$900ono all reasonable offers considered
04###### txt only
swaps also considered

Being a four door sedan and only a 2.0, it wasn't exactly what I was after but it did meet the rest of my criteria for an E30; 6 cylinder, 5 speed and cheap, so I messaged broseph to see what was up.

Specs:

1989 E30 320i Sedan
M20B20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M20)- SOHC 12v L6.
95kW@6000RPM
164N·m@4300RPM
5 Speed Getrag 240
Genie Turbo "sports exhaust"
Stock, hilux-spec suspension.
Sony Xplod CD player - 6's in the rear and stock speakers in the front.
~10KG of sound deadening removed from boot. I put the carpet back in though
AE86 cigarette lighter for GPS(speedo doesn't work)

Plans:
As this is my daily, I don't plan on doing any thing crazy to it. Don't think I will even put wide, low offset wheels on it. The OEM "Bottle cap" alloys look fine on a lowered car with nice rubber and that's pretty much all I plan to do.

H&R Race Springs (Front: 5.6kg/mm - Rear: 9.8kg/mm) Rear spring rates are effectively halved on E30's due to the nature of their semi trailing arm IRS design.

Bilstein Sport dampers all round.

Bilstein Sport and H&R Race.

Miller MAF Conversion to remove the barn door style AFM. Claims to free 10 strangled ponies.

BTB copy exhaust headers from Hot Tuning.

When I give the M20 a rebuild, I'm going to stroke the 2.0 to 2.3 using the crank and pistons from a 323i. I'd like to use my head to do a 2.7 stroker on a 325e bottom end but for registration/license purposes I'd rather retain the stock block and engine number. It would also be interesting to see what I can get out of the M20 with 80mm bores because most people ditch them in favour of a 2.5 motor, or a DOHC 24v from an E36, or M series BMW.

4.10 LSD.

I have another 320i Coupe, that for some reason can't be registered in SA and therefore will receive the track treatment. It's hektik dark metallic purple, fully gutted with Suzuki GTI seats and a GK Tech wheel/eBay boss kit at the moment but will probably be getting a Holden 5.0 and T5.

OniKyan

Those plans are definitely on the cards. The normal "i" lip is missing and PO painted the front valance black, so that's definitely going back to white. I want a black "is" lip , I like them colour matched on every colour but white.

First up is the H&R Race and Bilstein Sports, though.

Pictures, as promised. Just some crappy cell phone pics taken in the car park at Matsuri today.

Get better tail lights!

Put up the track car. That'll be more interesting than a daily driver. :D

Nice deal on the car though. I been looking at E36 and nothing's cheap enough to grab for a hack car.

OniKyan
2nd July 2011, 08:20 PM
This thread will end up being about both vehicles but I haven't taken any pictures or done anything to the two door yet. It might be a few months off though, as I'm building my AE86 and fixing up this daily first.

The coupe is a 1988 320i. It came with Super Pro trailing arm, and lower control arm bushes. It was missing the pin and bushing for the shifter linkage, which I purchased from Pelican Parts for about $15, (BMW wanted over $100). It has no AFM and the steering rack is bent, however, I will be doing a MAF conversion and swapping the steering rack with one from an E36, as they're 3.2 turns lock to lock, opposed to the 4 turns lock to lock on the E30. It feels like you have to turn the steering wheel over 9000 times when doing a 3 point turn.

As of yet, I can't really call it a "track car". It's more than a few months away from seeing one but that's all it will ever see due to the Nazis at Regency.

In regards to white car.
Found an M20B23 for the crank and pistons and a 4.10:1, open, small casing diff. Should be getting them both this weekend.

pull your bumpers off (2 allen key bolts under each bumper), unscrew the black corner trims (1 screw under each corner trim), unclip the black centre trims (just pull out after the corner trims are off) and paint your bumpers white whilst your at it. will make the car look awesome.

you can buy IS lips for $150 or less posted to your door off american ebay these days. i was selling them on australian ebay before the americans started selling direct to us. better than paying $350 to bmw for one if they can manage to find one themselves in stock in another store.

leave your rear lights, i like nothing but period and series correct lights on any car or it looks too ricer.

pull the wing off, use no wing or something oem. mt1 looks awesome but is expensive even if its a copy. "i" is cheap but i prefer 4 doors with no wing.

when you shadowline do your door pillars and mirrors in matte black too.

this car will look awesome with a little cleaning up. i want a 4 door late model so bad but having 2 cars is enough for now

Swapped front seats for the Suzuki GTI Recaro's.

Also got the black off the front valance, just using some thinners on a rag. Pretty much wiped straight off but didn't have much of an effect on the OEM textured stone-guard paint.

OniKyan
4th July 2011, 12:11 AM
The M-Tech 1 spoiler is ducktail style. M tech 1 is definitely my favourite style for E30's but M tech 1 is for Series 1 (chrome bumpers), M Tech 2 is for series 2(plastic bumpers).

This is the M tech 1 spoiler.

Indeed, it is an E28 M Tech, lol. I just grabbed the first one in Google images, didn't look too close.

Here's an E30 M Tech 1
http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/picture.php?albumid=286&pictureid=1644

Its design would make it fit many cars with ease. If I had a KE70, I would put an M tech 1 spoiler on it.

Genuine would be near on impossible to find but FRP repro aren't hard to come by.

DTM Fiberwerkz in the US sell them.

http://dtmfiberwerkz.com/access/mtech-style-rear-spoiler-p-88.html

International postage would be the killer, a spoiler by itself would probably be alright but I wouldn't get a whole kit through them.

Minor update.

Purchased an open centered, small case 4.10 diff today and a complete M20B23 with loom and ECU etc.

Not going to bother putting the 4.10 in yet though because next weekend I'm getting a 3.46 LSD and an iS lip off the same dude I bought the B23 from. Swap the LSD centre into my 4.10 and I'll be able to get the speedo working again. The speedo plugs are different between early and late diffs so I've been rolling with the GPS speedo for the last week or so.

M20B23 will just sit in the corner of my shed until I have the time, money and parts to do a complete rebuild of my B20, swapping crank and pistons for the B23 items. 2.3litre sexy times.

Vance
10th July 2011, 09:16 PM
you sure the 3.46 LSD isnt medium case? only LSD small case diffs ive heard of are 4.1 out of a 318is

OniKyan
10th July 2011, 09:25 PM
It's a 6 bolt, it came from a 323i. It's possible it started life as an open diff and an LSD centre was put in there, I'm not too sure.

So basically only painted my brake ducts white, fog deletes black and mirrors white for the time being. The paint I bought didn't match the Alpine white as close as I would have liked so I might have to get something mixed up for the bars.

Was planning to shadowline the chrome with bronze to match the bronze 15x8 Grid-V's I was contemplating on, however, I've been offered a set of 15x7 et25 BBS RG for a cool $1,000. It's a good price for genuine BBS's in E30 offset but I'm thinking I might be better off with some re-released Enkei 92's.

15x8 et25, 7kg and can get them delivered for $850-$900. They'll be available at any time so I won't have to put off more important things to get them either.

Picking up a pair of s/h Bilstein sports for the front and Koni adjustables for the rear this week. Just need to work out what springs I'm going to use. I really want H&R Race but they'll end up being about $500 with shipping. If I could get a set of custom springs made up to my specs locally, at a cheaper price, I'd be all for it.

OniKyan
8th August 2011, 04:30 PM
MK2/3 Suzuki Swift GTI. They were done a bit dodgy, the swift rail has been welded to the e30 rails so they sit slightly high. Still a million times better than the standard un-bolstered E30 seats and they match the rest of the interior pretty well, so I can't complain.

They're actually a Recaro designed seat, if you were wondering.

Jdm-Mcc

1986, 911 Turbo, known as a 930. Has RUF turbo, wastegate, cooler, cams, rims, mad exhaust and a few other bits. RUF is to Porsche sorta like HSV is to Holden.

The wastegate actually has it's own little muffler which then goes straight to atmosphere, I'll have to take a photo. I might take it off when he's not looking and chuck on a straight screamer.

Yeah but that's the stigma of Porsches only because a few fucktards perpetuate it! My old mans a diesel mechanic haha, definitely not your wank Porsche driver.

I'd rather other cars before it as well but it's still a cool and fairly quick car.

Anyway this is Oni's thread and I've gone OT enough already.

Found a cheap two door 323i. Has to be put back together and needs a good clean though.

Fuel is getting to the rail but the injectors aren't pulsing. Hopefully I can get it running just using parts from the M20B23 I bought to stroke the 320i. If I can do that, I'll swap the good stuff over from the daily, probably move it on and drive the 323i.

Saves me a lot of effort in the long run as I was planning to stroke the 320i but now I can just focus on head, injection, intake and exhaust on the 323i. Also have a spare engine, loom, ECU & AFM to take parts from.

Should be able to flip the 320i for enough to get the 4.10 LSD rebuilt, new bushes, shocks, short shifter and a service.

I have been told things about this problem. Happens to halfcuts after sitting around for a while.
It could be the injector solenoids. You can "shock" them into working if you touch both terminals with power from a car battery.
If it's all injectors though it's probably a problem higher up. Hope this helps, which it probably won't haha

Just picked up this 10/1983 323i. Even on the test drive it was obvious how much more grunt the 2.3 had.

Only real problems were cosmetic; paint needs a buff and polish, seats are torn(I have my Suzuki GTI's anyway), shifter boot is made of insulation tape and all 3 pedals felt a bit funny. Clutch had zero feel, brakes were super stiff and the accelerator pedal was sloppy. I should be able to sort it out with all the E30's I now have though.

Klaus may be up for sale soon.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/8/5/3/260623.jpg

Apparently this only happened on the very early '83 E30's and was rectified in late 83/84. It's repairable but would need to take the motor out to do it properly.

I also hate electrics and couldn't be bothered getting it running so I just bought this other 323i. The Legend of Ron Burgundy begins.
