Purchased this a few years back and it has been on and off jackstands ever since. Im constantly upgrading changing and breaking things. So far ive rebuilt the engine twice for bearing failures caused by oil starvation from silly issues that have been corrected and also have rebuilt the r154 due to 1st gear thrust washer failure and subsequent chewing of the gearset.

haha thanks. I quite like the 7m i think its a fine engine. It seems to have developed a bad reputation.

18th September 2011, 05:59 PM
they really do have a bad rep, haha just for eating HG apprently the torque specs are too light from factory which is the reason for it

my mate zac has 7mgte ma61 drift car and it goes fine for him :) jz for me though :)

Beefy_Heafy
18th September 2011, 06:36 PM
yeah that head gasket thing would be the reason. The factory specs are shit. i don’t think there is anything actually wrong with the hardware even. its just not tight enough from factory. either way, metal hg and arp studs definitely solve the issue.

at the end of the day. u can get more out of a 2jz. but for my power goals (responsive 500rwhp) either is fine IMO

ill give ur build threads a read when i get home from work

dr1ft-pig
18th September 2011, 10:29 PM
yeah that would be it then, i was also told that the head bolts were spaced too far apart or something??? do think its a load of shit though as there is only really one spot u can put them, anwhere else and u get close to bores etc

500hp 7m will be impressive man :) im making 400 with bolt ons,ecu and injectors

<3 that your doing the whole "7mgte build up"

Beefy_Heafy
20th September 2011, 07:46 AM
Yeah. Ive been through a bit with this engine mereki. I've learned fuck tons in the last couple of years. From never having touched or driven a turbo engine to trying to figure shit out. To now knowing were to actually get the rare parts I need.
I want to build another long block with different internals and swap that in at some point. Pauter rods and wiseco pistons. Also I'd use a 7m crank which is heavier than the 6m that i use but with more counterweights. I'd get it lightened and knife edged to come under the weight of the 6m crank. Along with other goodies like teflon crank scraper and baffled sump. Would be soo tough.

Buying things and them finding out u could have gotten better things is all part of the learning curve I guess.

This should be running again soon. The last part (throttle body) that I have been waiting on forever is in the mail!

Then it's just a matter of making up the cold side Ic pipe and routing all the bov, vac lines and iac, brake booster, pcv etc

UPDATE!

got the red dragon's rear tyres for matsuri today. hopefully these will last a few events. depending on how similar the compound is to lego car wheels.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234323.jpg

Also got another part for Turbo A in the mail.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234325.jpg

nice polished stainless steel intercooler block off plate.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234327.jpg

had to put it on immediately!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234329.jpg

also mocked up the new painted cam covers

so here is some current engine bay pics

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234331.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234333.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234335.jpg

heres a picture of the old cam covers for comparison

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234337.jpg

im pretty happy with the way the engine bay is turning out. except the original plan was to go for a "blackout" style bay and body. but in my excitement for samco hoses etc i managed to buy all default blue colour thinking that it would look cool and forgetting the original plan. i think it would look better if i had all black silicone coolant hoses and intercooler joins. but its fine the way it is. too much $$$ to swap back. and at the end of the day its a driving car not a show car. its going to get hell dirty anyway

cam covers rock, sometimes i wish i didnt sell my mk3.............

u had a mk3 man? wow. why did u sell?

TODAY!!
got new coilovers and brake rotors with green stuff pads (s13 front and mx73 rear) for the red dragon

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234905.jpg

its a mixed set. s13 front ae86 rear. spring rates are 8kg front 6kg rear

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234907.jpg

they are "BC" coilovers. not my first pick but they were cheap and available. I wasn't expecting much so i was pleasantly surprised to find that they seem like pretty good quality. we shall see how they perform in the long term.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234909.jpg

i like the way that the adjustable spring seat fitted. its all in nice and snug.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234911.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234913.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/234917.jpg

fresh rotors and pads look great.

took it out for a spin and to start bedding in the pads.
the coilovers are pretty good so far. have them set to 18/30 on the front and 25/30 on the rear. I might dial fronts down to 15 and then 12 as im finding its a little more understeer biased and a little skittish over rough surfaces in the front than it used to be.
other than that, the new sussy is nice as it makes NO NOISE! the old stuff was all shagged out in the pillowballs etc was making some terrible thumping and creaking. also its more comfortable that the old stuff. actually its ride is quite reasonable.

will take pics of stance tomorrow maybe. height isnt set yet

been going hard on the cold side intercooler pipe.

not a great deal of progress on turbo a today. decided that id be pushing it to have this ready for matsuri and i wanna take my time and enjoy this build rather than stress out about it.

made up a bracket for the top of intercooler to bonnet latch and also reinstalled accusump and tied down oil cooler. then hid all the secret parts away again under the intercooler block off plate :(

bonnet works again!

also cleaned up the area around where the cold pipe comes into the engine bay. painted and put a bunch of pinchweld around the sharp edges left from cutting through the battery tray.

got this going a few weeks ago. had some fun times trouble shooting turns out there was a wiring failure in the coil packs causing 2 of the coils not to fire. which in turn caused the car to shut down the injectors due to no ignition shortly thereafter. seems simple in hindsight.

anyway. been driving around, pretty fucking awesome. haven't had the throttle mounted properly as of yet. and i have a crazy high idle around 1400 (possible vac leak) idles at like 1000 when car is cold but as it warms up it starts getting higher. also when car is dead cold you have to let it warm a bit as pressing the accelerator causes it to hesitate and stall. can get it to rev if your really gentle on the pedal. does the same thing with and without cold start injector. so im assuming this is either because of aforementioned vac leak or not having air temp sensor (accidentally melted it)

also having tps issues but i assume that is because its not mounted properly. just haven't checked it out thoroughly yet.

car goes quick... stupid quick. winds out to 200 easily (controlled environment of course)

been fiddling with boost controller to get it to stabilize at 18psi.

did i mention the brakes. holy fucking broken ribs batman. scrubs off the aforementioned 200kmph like it never happened very pleased with that purchase. bias is good sometimes it locks the rears first sometimes front. ill decide to whether or not i need to install bias valve when i get coilovers in and new rubber.

heres some pics and vids.

long story short

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/4/0/4/2/253147.jpg

default springs is 14k front 8k rear. after speaking to a few different people and having a think i opted for 10k rear springs instead.
