Good to see this car going somewhere again!

3/4 bolt holes on an 86 rail will line up (front left tab will need moving)

I've got an 86 Bride super low rail that I had professionally modified to fit this that I may swap for an unmodified one :)

no updates or anything, just been driving it and enjoying this lovely adelaide weather.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/3/3/6/245820.jpg

i'm wanting to do the great ocean road in feb so i'm just going to make this nice and reliable for the trip and then modify it afterwards.
but even then i'm thinking of leaving the engine stock and just doing minor handling mods, i don't want to go overboard because i don't want to push it too hard and risk crashing it (there are plenty of e7 sedans that i can do that with).

Handling is something that pano's need. I'll let you know how my front end on mine goes, about to build 86 coilovers based on SW20 rear inserts and otomoto 5kg kit.

I'm yet to choose/change shocks in the rear of my pano. Take it from someone who's using 2 inch blocks, don't get them if you plan on having your car handle well.

Hi fags. I have been contracted to do all the suspension work on this panno. Here's tonights efforts.

Let me preface this by saying that I found A LOT of super dodgy shit going on. After speaking to Declan and hearing the story of how this suspension setup came to be where it is today and the circumstances under which the components were fitted, instead of flaming whoever used to own the car, take this is a 'what NOT to do' guide.

Let's get to work than, shall we?

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276685.jpg

Here's the first thing I noticed. Swaybar not hooked up to the control arms on either side.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276686.jpg

No castellated nut used on the tie rod end - a big no-no. Castellated nut with split pin, unless a nyloc nut is provided with the kit. That said this does have a locking type washer on it.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276687.jpg

And, uh, those brake lines should be secured... somewhere....

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276688.jpg

And that tie rod end should not be a banana.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276689.jpg

AND THOSE STRUT BOLTS SHOULD NOT BE FINGER TIGHT HOLY FUCK DECLAN HOW DID THESE NOT FALL OUT RESULTING IN FIERY DEATH?

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276690.jpg

Oh, don't mind that. Brake line wasn't done up tight enough and was losing fluid. No biggie. SERIOUSLY?

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276691.jpg

That is by far the SADDEST xE7x rack i've ever seen.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276692.jpg

This is the task at hand.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276693.jpg

Time to rummage through the extensive AJPS bolts bucket. Due to having a few screws loose, the panno was missing a few bits and bobs.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276694.jpg

Like all of these.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276695.jpg

I believe this is where i'm meant to say 'because race car'.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276696.jpg

That rack looks a lot nicer now.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/276697.jpg

ALSO - NEW RACK MOUNT BUSH FITTING TRICK ULTIMATE WIN TIME.
Doing these generally makes me want to kill myself, but after doing well over a dozen of them I have the technique down. All as follows:

On the pinion side of the rack with the 'd' shaped bush, apply bush grease (not included) -
-along the side 'lips' where the 'd' bush mounts along the rack
-along the top of the retaining 'shoe' / clamp
-on the bump in the crossmember that locates in the front of the 'd' bush

fitting bushes -
-really work the D bush in, make sure the ends meet at the seam
-fit both bushes before fitting retaining clamps

-fit passenger side retaining clamp LOOSELY - bolts only in a few turns
-put drivers side retaining clamp in place - insert the 'tongue' at the end of the retainer into the 'groove' in the crossmember
-while compressing the back of the retainer with some large multigrips, use a prybar to push the rack forward to push the rack into the locating notch on the crossmember and align the front bolt hole. While doing this insert the front retaining bolt. You may need a friend, or you may have to get inventive.
-use prybar to push retainer down into bush, levering off the gearbox to engine brace - fit rear bolt while doing this

Using this method will dramatically reduce the amount of cursing involved.

Only things left to do are - FIND SOME HUBS, fit and bleed brakes, eyecrometer wheel align and fit the rear shocks.

That's all for tonight.

^ i think i might make this my sig.

i have no idea how the whole front end hasn't fallen apart and killed me yet but i'm going to go ahead and assume that there is a divine being of the car gods looking down upon me and smiling at my windowless awesome-ness.

ps - front end is looking shiney and nice now, thank you josh!

My car was exactly the same as far as loose and non existent nuts and bolts go. I would go and check over the entire car now, who knows what else is wrong. I don't know how people can be so lazy/ignorant when it comes to something so simple and important.

Well given the circumstances, most of the shit that's going to be going wrong is in the front sus -apparently some very tired and temporary suspension was put in there just as a means of getting the car rolling and the person it was going to be onsold to would resolve that. Then it quickly got onsold again, and possibly again. Hrm.

Decs, cause i'm a nice guy and I made the mistake of turning on my computer instead of going to bed like a normal person, here's tonights efforts.

Front end fully assembled sans hubs and brakes.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/277223.jpg

TRD Blues in the rear, nicely stiff.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/277224.jpg

Here's all the junk that came out.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/277225.jpg

AAaaaaaaand the finished product.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/277226.jpg

Stance - I think decs wants to drop the rear down more. There's about 1.5 - 2.5 deg of camber in it. It needs a wheel align, as much as the famed Javal 'eyecrometer' alignment is definitely sufficient, I do not recommend running it for more than a few days.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/277227.jpg

Silly amounts of lock. Panelvan rack + lockspacer + P/S arms will do that.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/277228.jpg

Very nice.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/4/3/277229.jpg

since then i've really neglected it and just left it out the back of my grandparents house, not wanting to drive it or even look at it to be honest.

i'm now at a crossroads, where i either go all out on the car and do what i have envisioned in my head for it or sell it and move on.

i haven't made my mind up about either yet.

I've tossed up letting my pano go in the past too, not an easy decision to make but I'm definately keeping mine now. They really do tick a lot of boxes as far as daily driver requirements go, good space in rear for carting stuff, simple/easy to fix mechanically, look kinda ok when tidy, cheap tyre size, cheap to run, small car makes for easy parking (parking spaces are getting smaller and smaller), well balanced so it makes for ok sort of handling for what it is etc...

All i can say really is don't rush a sale if you're in two minds about it, adding i nice smallport with aircon & a good stereo would be enough for this car to keep you entertained. Would never bother keeping it though if you're planning anything other than dailying it.
