ey people,

i joined this forum to scan for sweet 14inch wheel's but looks like a pretty sweet forum. stumbled upon the dirty datto section :P so here i am

here's my 1987 s12 nissan gazelle MkII bought the car about a year or so ago and have been building it up slowly in my spare time. im restoring it to its former glory keeping it all period correct. well except for the suspension of cause. this will all be copied and pasted from other forums so alot may not make sense or be in context but never the less you'll get the idea. enjoy

ey ppl this is my new project car, i used to own a gazelle back in 05 bought it as my second car, did quite a bit of work to it but had to sell it due to building and finishing my 94 180sx. so im pretty much finished all the hard work on the 180 so i thought i'd pick up another project car. when i saw this one come up for sale i just had to have it. went to check it out in Heidelberg only about 15mins from my house and as soon as i saw the rear spoiler poking out from behind a fence as i drove down the street it was pretty much settled then and there haha.

checked out the car from top to bottom and it was really good condition considering its age. nothing was really unrepairable well accept for the front bar which is a bit of a set back but it'll patch up alright, it also has a cracked windscreen which im not to fussed about. i also noticed the fuel lines for injector no2 had a hole and was spraying fuel like a mofo but that was an easy fix. so then and there a put a deposit down and was going to come back to get it that weekend

so saturday came and with my cash, my toolbox and a piece of fuel tube i headed for boki's place. got there and started on the injector tube straight away, had it repaired in about 10mins. went to start her up and chug chug chug...... nothing fu**! so did some diagnosis and noticed a couple of the spark plugs were very very loose so i tightened them up and had another crack it started then died again because there was no fuel :( so boki grabbed the jerry and we were off to the servo got 5ltrs and headed back filled her up and had another crack. it tried to go but just couldn't quite get there. so i whipped out a few plugs and they were shot. so we took off to repco to pick up a new set. 20mins later had them all swapped out and we were ready to have another go. broom! its alive and running really well. so i packed up my sh** handed over the cash and i was off. YAY!

before i had even picked up the car i was up a pick-a-part looking for parts that i remember not being on the mkII when i had been to see it. so i managed to get my hands on a pair of headlight surrounds, some mint indicators, both rear parcel shelves, set of new RED :D ignition leads and a few other bits and pieces all for $16 ahahahhaa

so on sunday i finally got to work on it and tidy it up. took off the rear spoiler for repair removed the grill and the parkers so that i wouldn't damage them while working on the motor. as soon as i got home i went to super cheap and picked up some things to service the beast i got some nice synthetic oil a oil filter, fuel filter, new brake fluid, new ps fluid and a fair few cans of degreaser haha

so i started with the leads swapped them all over then put the new fuel filter on (u should see the sh** that was stuck in the old one! i dont think it's ever been changed) and thats what was causing the engine to cough and splutter. tried to start her up and started then died :( out of fuel again! off to the servo again with the jerry, this time i bought 20ltrs! haha oh and while i was there the mechanics were throwing out a big trolly jack. so i asked them why there were chucking it and they said they had got new ones in. so i asked them for it and they gave it to me!!! fu**ing sweet deal right there. so all loaded up i headed for home to fill up the gaz. got the fuel in and had another crack, it started but it was as if it wasn't sparking all cylinders so i double checked all the leads just to make sure i hadn't swapped any around, they all were correct. so i pulled the dizzy cap off and there it was all the contacts were munted! especially the coil contacts. so off to pick-a-part again to pick one up. i was happy as because i managed to find one in mint condition! and for only $8 :) also stole a whole heap of little bits and pieces for the car.

got to put a fair few hours into it 2day as i got the day off (RDO FTW!) spent most of the dat geting it to run smooth. turned out the rotor in the dizzy wasn't making full contact of both coils (twin spark engine) spent ages fuckin around with it and finally ended up just sliding the rotor contacts closer to the cap with a screw driver and that worked a treat. so i spent the rest of the day changing the fuel and water and giving the engine bay a good deep clean.

dont have pics of the progress as of yet but i'll get them up soon.

let me know what u recon, i plan on making this a really clean jdm styled street/track car.

im aiming for something like this

so heres some photo's of the slow process or removing parts cleaning them and cleaning under them. i want to get it to a really good presentable state and getting everything working before i start modifying it.

so its been ages since i've updated this thread. i'm stil collecting parts for it which is really qe hard considering the rarity. BUT! i have managed to get a mkII front bar from the middle of bum fuck nowhere! found a shell for wrecking in the middle of nsw countryside and mannaged to get the guy to send me the front bar. its in mint condition and came with indicators and a reo for $100 delivered!

the next step was to track down some jdmness for the beast and i found it in California :) because these were a usdm and came a an SE the had all the good bits on them from factory, i got one of the blokes from s12silvia.com to send me a factory plastic aero front lip and a pair of skirts all the way from cali. really cheap too.

wheels finalised for the s12 unless i find something with lower offsets, 15 x 8 -9 all round with a 15mm slip on on the rear.

now for some pics

thats the new bad and the new lip. more pics will be streaming through in the next month sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo stay tuned :)

made a bit of progress on the car 2day, cleaned all the conv. parts to go in to the s12 then pressed new ball joints and bushes into the lca's, cleaned up the s13 rotors ready to go in. stripped all the s12 front end suspension and threw it in the bin lol. now im up to cleaning the chassis and cross member ready for the installation of all the new parts.

i also noticed that the rad support had be changed as some stage in its life and some type of dodgy filler used to cover the welds and joins. so i started to remove all that by carving at it then cleaning the areas with a rotary brush. all the welds for the repairs appear to be good and correct so all thats needed is to buy some proper body sealant and paint it all up nice.

i've also changed my mind on the wheels i was going to buy. i was goin to buy a set of performance challengers in 15x8-9 and 15x10-27 but squeezing the 10's under the rears is just goin to be a pain in the arse. so i discovered a company in the UK who make period style wheels in almost every size and offset. i've chosen to go with a set of 4 spoke modular wheels in 15x8-10 and 15x9-20 which should look fu**ing dope :)

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265630.jpg

im just waiting to hear back from them regarding exact sizes and prices.

i also bought a bride seat the other day and if i dont sell it i'll put it in the s12.

heres a few pics of what i've been up to

been pretty busy on the s12 over the last couple of days. i really wanna get it to a roadworthy state asap. so while all the front sus was stripped out i stripped back all the old crusty sound deadener out with a rotary wire brush, cleans them and sprayed them with killrust and new deadener over the top. looks like new now.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265639.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265640.jpg

my new coily's rocked up the other day to so i test fitted them in the nice clean wheel arch

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265642.jpg

next thing was to strip the front end. its had a repair in the past, was a pretty good job they used alot of sealent, so im stripping all that back and the surface rust under it and treating it all with killrust and repainting it all. while all the parts are off they'll all be thoroughly cleaned and or painted. theres also sooooo much overspray on everything and its such a bastard to get off. so all the plastic pieces i have painted with brake fluid to strip the paint back without damaging the plastic.
its all coming up pretty good. im gonna order some paint next week and i'll hope to have a fair bit of the parts prepped ready for colour :)

its all in black killrust primer atm. will hit it with some paint soon enough.

also dropped the steering rack ready for modding. it was covered in sooo much shit. took ages to get it all off. now i have to rethread the s13 tie rods, adding 10-20mm extra thread and cut the same of the end so the s13 tie rods and ends will work with the s12 rack. then add some lock spacers and thats it for steering. other than maybe modding the LCA's and knuckles

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265647.jpg

i was but they dont reply to emails. i'll keep trying coz their fuckin crazy lookin wheels.

in other news

my twin tips arrived 2day. thought i'd be a poser and take some snaps. should look sweet once i weld it all up and position it. im really not a fan of the rolled ends so im gonna chop em off

2.5inch in 3 inch out

u can see the difference in size compared to stock

finished work early so decided to do some panel work on the old slapper. i could see that there had been quite a bit of bog used in the repairing of the filler panel below the lights so i carved all that off, sanded it all back and got to work tapping out the 2 large dents in the panel.

tools used:
- 3 dif types of hammers
- a screw driver i filed down to tap out square edges
- small peices of timber custom axed with a tomahawk
- tomahawk

gotta love backyard jobs lol

anyway got both dings out really easy and its only going to need the lightest skim of bog if any to finish it.

well thins kind of opened a can of worms :S because it lead me to the left panel, which i noticed had some bog on it to. so i stripped that back to reveal a really bad kink it the nose piece that houses the front parker lense. so the panel had to come off for repair.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265659.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265664.jpg

knocked all that out and got it really really straight. this piece wont need any bog its that straight now. while i was fuckin round with that paint started to chip off the wheel arch so out came the wire wheel and i started to strip that back, u know what i found? YEAP...... BOG fuckin dodgy kents! ah well stripped it all off and started to tap the panel back to shape but it started to get too dark so i laid some killrust on it and went inside.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265665.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265666.jpg
gonna need alot more work to get it nice and straight again

pretty happy with my panel beating skills these days. i used to just be a bog man myself lol. but if im gonna build another car it may as well be up to standard of my 180sx so its gonna be as spot-on as possible

so car currently stands like this......

dun dun dun
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265664.jpg

and just to give u's an idea of how far out that nose piece was here is a before and after with a line guide

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265668.jpg

it had been bent right in and kinked it completely

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265669.jpg

so i showed it who's boss

so i bitched out and just bought a set of hoshino's that were for sale locally. i finally got a reply about the 4 spoke wheels and was a little disappointed. the 4spoke 3 piece wheels are no longer in production and i can only get them in a one piece and at $300+ per wheel plus shipping and tyres it was pushing a little to high for a "cheap" build lol so the hoshino's had been for sale for a while and i finally decided to just buy them even just for the time being i guess i could always widen them.

specs are 14x7.5-1 front and 14x8-7

i originally wanted 15s but looking at a few examples of s12's running hoshino's in 14inch my mind was soon changed :)
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265670.jpg

picking the wheels up on wednesday night cant wait to start reco'ing them

in australia impossible to find but in the usa they were a factory option. an mkii front bar in australia is hard enough to find. but got both :D

so i picked up the hoshino's . they're in pretty pox condition but should scrub up alright. im going to reco them as much as possible, new bolts, new paint, carve all the gutter marks off them and polish them up. pretty happy with how they sit, will have to run a 5-8mm spacer on the front to clear the sr brakes but all in all they look tough.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265675.jpg

so last night i was finally able to go and pick up a pair of s14 caster rod brackets for the s12. 2day after work i modified them to fit the 12 and bolted them in.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265676.jpg
so three out of four holes line up so just measure, drill and ya laughin

once that was done, in went the s13 LCA
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265677.jpg

then the knuckle, hub and the coilover goes in
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265678.jpg

cant do much more till my adj. caster rods arrive and i can find a die with a m12 x 1.25 thread pitch so i can cut some more thread on the tie rods. also have to test fit an s14 swaybar. so i thought i'd start on the next project.....

a few months ago i bought a really old s13 strut bar. now the reason i bought this particular one was because it had really long mounts on the strut brackets and a short cross bar. i did this becase the s12 towers are closer together than an s13. so instead of doing what alot of people do and cut the mounts off, mod them and weld them back on in a different position all i gotta do is measure, drill, cut off excess, shape, paint, profit :D

these should explain it a little better. where the dots are i drill a hole then chop it shorter, shape a nice end and bolt it all up. i also thought that i had run into a problem of the bar fouling on the throttle cable BUT the mounts are offset about 10-15mm so i just spun it around and got enough clearence yay ;)

front have some pretty serious poke due to the s13 lca's lol and i still have to run a 5-8mm spacer so that the wheels will clear the brakes. so im just gonna machine the calipers a little to give me better clearance and less poke. the rears sit well but i might need to run a small spacer to match the fronts

fun times!

Not a whole lot to report, bought a pair of centreline skid wheels really cheap. 14x7 +-0 were in shit condition so I polished them up, came out awesome I recon. I'm gonna try to get the rest of the front end suspension together this weekend.

so i finished work earlie 2day and decided to put in some solid work until the sun went down. managed to get the front end suspension finished got the brakes on bled the power steering got the stock wheels on and dropped it back on the ground.

then i went to start it to move it but it wouldn't start. so after some troubleshooting i worked out the fuel pump was seized, damn :( so whipped out the pump to find a pretty nasty sight. tank full of sh**, pump full of sh** and the cradle starting to corrode, more damn :(

then i lost light and couldn't do anymore, even more damn :(

so i have to order a new pump and clean and modify the cradle for it.

front sus finished

pretty sweet fitment for standard wheels ;)

got plenty more done tonight. ordered a new walbro fuel pump, bought some new rear lower control arm bushes. the tank is pretty filthy and rusty so i dropped that. thank f*ck s12's have a drain plug! there was about 45 litres in there haha.

bot it out and gave the outside a really good clean, took off all the sound deadening and dirt and sh** and filth ready for a nice new coat of paint. thinking of painting it either white or red or even just laying a new coat of sound deadener. i'll figure that out when i clean the inside out.

anyway heres some pics it really does look like its just rolled off the assembly line in japan. came up imaculate :)

just bought it from nissan oem :)

so i have a pretty epic update :) to exited to even wait till i pick it up haha. i just won an engine on ebay, well 2 engines to be exact and a gearbox and a loom and an ecu and for fuck all :D

so im just gonna leave this here
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265713.jpg

its a fj20e i was originally looking for a fj20et but this came up and i really like the idea of building a strong and reliable 2ltr NA. part of the reason i enjoyed my original s12 so much. and on the other had if i want a turbo fj i'll just build it out of the spare motor :)

i guess i gotta get the thing up and running before i start with all the pipe dreams. im also looking at buying a house soon so alot of my final goals for the car wont be reached for quite some time. main thing at the moment is to have it rolling and running within the next few weeks.

im currently working on the rear end, i have removed pretty much everything except the diff and xmember, and am trying to get the rear control arm bushes out and get all the parts cleaned up and ready for reassembly.
picked up a new pair of D bushes and link bushes today and some paint for the fuel tank, i've fone with a nice bright red to match the exterior (not that its going to be seen :D)
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265714.jpg
finished modifying the fuel pump cradle for a walbro 255lph still needs a good cleanup to finish it off. plus i cleaned the inside of the tank and treated it with rust converter which probably wont last long but ah well.

and here's a quick flick of the other motor i got in the sale, comes complete but i was told a couple of conrod bolts let go and consequently caused some damage. it also comes with both stlyes of intake plenum's offered by nissan a larger one for the dr30 skyline and a small version for the s12 silvia so pretty happy about that too.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265717.jpg

so finally saturday came and after going to an recievership auction i set off with a mate to Kawarren, 20mins out of colac. took us about 2 hours and 20mins to get there in the trusy kia k2700. finally got there and the dudes shed was fucking epic! 8 car garage with a 2 poster hoist and a 4 car carport on the side. his colection of cars included a heavily modded 32gtr, ae86, r31 skyline, 2x 1200 utes, 2x Suzuki LJ50V baby 4wd's, new hilux setup for some serious 4wding and an epicly powerful buggie that keeps tearing apart hub splines haha. so anyway backed the truck in and loaded up both engines, gearbox and a box full of loom and spares. also scored a set of new rear brake pads :) so all loaded up we set off back to civilization haha. got back when it was dark so i didn't unload the motors untill today after the hangover wore off.
so at the auction i mentioned i bought a 3phase 500kg chain hoist for $80 and a work bench, the hoist really came in handy getting the motors off the truck got it all unloaded and ready to go on an engine stand. had to pull the clutch and flywheel off to get it the stand and i couldn't be fucked so i'll leave it untill 2moro. only got one pick of the whole adventure out the back window just after we left to get home. but 2moro arvo i'll be sure to take a few more of the haul haha

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265718.jpg

tonight i went back up to my dads factory to mount the engine on a stand for inspection. got the electric crane rackin again :) i brought some large metric bolt from home left over from the 180sx but none of them fitted the tranny mount hols on the block of the fj so off to mitre ten to pick some up. couldn't find any on the shelf so i had to go searching through a huge box full of mixed up bolts and screws that were reduced haha managed to find 4 that'll do the job. $5 down i headed back to mount it all up. took the presure plate, clutch plate, flywheel and backing plate off and mounted the motor on the stand yay. thought i'll pull rocker cover for a quick inspection. all looks good except for the loose timing chain but thats a common problem in fj20's. this ones quite bad though as its been grinding on the bottom of the rocker cover. all those shavings had to have gone somewhere. i hoping their chilling in the sump or stuck in the pick up. all the cam lobes look mint as and the head seems pretty clean for 20year+ old motor. so over the next few weeks im going to fit it with a modified mazda chain tentioner and give it a really good inspection top to bottom and a good clean and paint, replace hoses, gaskets etc. and then once the car is reg'd i'll whack it in a go silly :)

it was a massive headache to squeeze the new control arm bushes between the cross member tabs on my own but i eventually got them in. they weight about 15kg's each and u gotta hold all that weight then slip the driveshafts in then slot the other 2 mounting points in and then try to align the holes while still supporting the weight! bit better than what was there lol

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265772.jpg

so i made a fair bit of progress today, and a slight setback as well.

i managed to mount my freshly painted fuel tank up into position, re-install my rear brakes with new pads, tighten and torque the rear end and hook up and install the fuel pump and cradle. once i did all that i when to start the car and she fired up straight away! naice! untill i notices fuel spewing out from the rear end FUCK! this is where a checklist would have come in handy because i forgot to reconnect the return fuel line to the tank so all the fuel poured out all over my freshly painted tank ruining it almost completely. FML! so this means repainting it again :( what a fucking pain in the arse. ah well shit happens. i'll do it when i can be fucked dropping the tank again.
got the rear wheels on and was able to drop the car on the ground but it was too dark to clean out all the parts in the car and take it for a spin.

so hopefully this weekend i'll be able to finally drive the car and see how all the new gear feels, should be good. then i start on cleaning it all up again and continuing on with the paint and panel.

anyway heres some pics of todays adventure

the coilovers have plenty more adjustment to drop the car further but it still need to go through roadworthy so this height will do for now. the standard wheels look so sunken with all that camber. but i'll need that much for clearance once the hoshino's go on.

peace :)

cheers anth! paint is not as bad as i though, i'll just give it a bit of a patch up untill i can be fucked hitting it with 2pak

bit of a teaser for ya dude, i know their not the hoshies but ah well, i still gotta reco them and wrap them. i put the 14 x 7 +0 centrelines on the rear for shits and giggles. i cant wait to get the hoshie's all cleaned up lookin shmick and rockin some treads :)

good evening bitches!

got a fuck tonne of work done 2day, my mate came round to give me a hand so i got a fair bit done.

bled the front brakes, raised the front end to make it a bit more roadworthy, adjusted the steering, adjusted the front castor, removed and panel beat both front guards, installed both front guards, bumper, filler peice, grille and the front lip so i can drive it all up to my dads factory and start to prep them for paint.

i couldn't fit the new centrelines that i just bought for 2 reasons, 1. the tyres are just far too big and 2. i didn't have the correct wheel nuts unfortunately. looking at the poke i get from a 14x7 -0 its gonna look pretty serious with a 14x7.5 -1 thats about 13mm more poke, fuckenmajesus!

got plenty of pics as well so time for a picture dump enjoy :D

so im now settled into my new home. set up most of the garage so far. still need to do the floor and maybe paint the walls. both of which should have been done before i filled it with my shit. also need to weld up my wheel rack and bolt it to the wall.

moved the s12 from essendon to avondale heights 2day, was an interesting ride. the guy at the servo made me pre-pay because it looks like such a banger with no plates lol plus all the looks i was getting was hilarious. rocking no exhaust, it was soooo loud i really thought i was gonna get stung by the popo, temp reg or not they weren't gonna like it haha. so now to start working on this beast again. im first goin to strip, clean and repair the interior then stat back on the body work again as its taken quite a beating being stuck in my old drive way. i've noticed my dad had put some nice dents in the front drivers side panel the bastard! anyway he it is in its new home.

time for an update. i've been flat out with the house and work etc. but i've still managed to get some work in on the s12.

made up a top for my castrol drum so i've got a table for beers :)
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/285986.jpg

moved my vice bench in on my own (lazy mates lol) thing weighs like 170kgs. that was a struggle

i found these car ramps in the shed of my holiday house a couple of years ago. they were pretty rusted and shitty so i was gonna throw them out. instead i thought i'd take to them with a grinder and a welder and make myself a pair of low ramps. i've only cut and shut one of them but u get the idea.

perfect

while i was in the mood for creation i knocked up a portable work table/welding table to wheel around the garage. just a steel frame with a 3mm steel top. and can either house my toolbox underneath or fit 2 milk crates for storage.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/285994.jpg

started removing more parts from the car and whilst removing the sunroof i noticed some rust starting to appear on one of the mounts for the wind deflectors. so i drilled the spot welds out and stripped the mount back and treated it. welded it back into place and gave it a lick of paint. no more rust, easy as.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/286005.jpg

next on the list is body work. so many parts need to be repaired, striped, prepped and painted. today i started on the passenger front guard. now i've never used paint stripper on a car before so i thought i'd give it a go. the paint was very very thick so it took me almost a whole day of applying the stripper, waiting and scrapping off the paint. but the result is flawless. the panel is alot better shape than first thought. so i just need to tap out a couple of little dents weld a couple of crack and then onto prep.

so i finally got around to modifying an old s13 strut brace that i picked up ages ago and fitted it to the s12.

pretty easy, i'll do a small tutorial as this type of brace is quite common.

so to start find yourself a strut brace in a style like this. theres plenty around, i just found this pic on ebay ($50)

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/337932.jpg

mine i found at a wrecker for about $50 its just as old one from jp.

take it apart and bolt the strut top mounts to the car.

now hold the bar over the bay and line it up to the centre of the engine bay to make a rough mark of where the new hole will need to be drilled ( dont need to be too accurate at this point)
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/265680.jpg

now remove the mounts and measure in from the edge nearest the original mount to make both sides the same. also measure the centre of the brace tab. then find an appropriate round object or a drawing compass to mark the new rounded edge of the tabs.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/337936.jpg

drill a pilot hole no more than 1/3 of the final hole. my final hole was 10mm so a 3mm bit was sufficient. same process for the other side.
tip: put something between the two tabs to minimise flexing when you clam it. i used a socket as i always do for this type of thing.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/337938.jpg

then grind the end off and shape up your rounded edge.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/337940.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/337942.jpg

then paint /clean/polish and bolt it up.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/337944.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/337946.jpg

plenty of clearance

cheers fella's

so today i headed over to my dad's factory to pick up my three spare engines. the s13 sr20det black top, the s12 fj20e and the dr30 fj20e. all went ahead without a hitch and got them lifted on and off with no problems.

while i was there i knocked up a couple of engine trolleys using some 38mm mdf scrap and some HD castors. worked a treat and they are perfect for wheeling the motors around the garage.

now that the motors are finally in the garage i can finally inspect them thoroughly and make the decision of whether to rebuild or just clean, paint, change all gaskets and seals and whack it straight in the s12.

so hers some pics of the disassembly and inspection process.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/343349.jpg

sump off, has suffered a bit of damage but luckily i have a spare. this one will give its life to an extended sump conversion.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/343351.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/343353.jpg

damaged the pick-up as well but again i have a spare ;)no metal deposits trapped in it though which is a good sign.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/343355.jpg

so far as far i can tell the bottom end appears to be in really good shape, still all lubed up, clean and moving freely. i might pull the bearing caps off the con rods to take a look at the bearings.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/343361.jpg

these are the 2 versions of fj20e intake manifolds one is out of a dr30 skyline (larger) and the other is out of the s12 silvia (smaller)
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/343363.jpg

took the thermo housing off and other that all the shitty rust there is very little corrosion. i discovered later that the rust was caused predominantly by the steel wire coils inside the 'universal' flexi radiator hoses used in the previous setup.

pulled the plugs for inspection. all appear to be in very good condition. last one is a little rusty so there must have been some water down the plug hole at some stage.

more updates, stripped the fj down and since i've been scrubbing away like crazy to clean this motor.

products that were needed:
petrol
degreaser
brake cleaner
paint stripper
turps
soap and water

tools needed:
tooth brush
3 types of wire bruses
paint scraper
wire wheel

its taken me ages to clean the crank case the head and the block. haven't cleaned the rocker cover at all coz that'll be repainted in red crinkle paint.

[quote name='s12_silvia' timestamp='1341750969' post='80713']
so this weekend i began the task of reconditioning all my wheels. both my hoshino's and my southern ways are in pretty bad shape including a few bent areas some fairly nasty gutter rash and pitting.
so the first task was to trim some of the gutter rash back and clean the contaminants off the rims. next was the alloy filling. now i done have a tig and i was looking for other ways of repairing them. to get them done professionally i was looking at at least $150+ per wheel and at min $1200 for the 2 sets it was far too expensive. so i came across a product online by a company called laser. its called 4707 aluminium repair system. costs about $50 for the kit and all you need is a butain torch as the melting temperature of the brazing rods is 500deg c lover than aluminium. i started with my normal butain torch and that worked but it was rediculously slow to get the wheels up to temp so i lashed out and bought a map gas burner. about $130 from bunnings. its butain mixed with acetylene so it burns soooo much hotter! and this thing worked AWESOME! got the wheels up to temp in no time and laying down the braze was easy as just run a tinning layer on then just build up the material till the rash or missing chunk is filled. let cool then file, shape, machine, sand and polish.

enough with the bs stories i'll let the pictures do the talking

some of the damage

the 4707 aluminium repair system

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/395559.jpg

the map gas torch. the onei got came with a 1.5 meter hose so it so much easier to use than holding the whole bottle all the time.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/395561.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/395565.jpg

i managed to repair 2 full sets of wheels in about 1.5 hours and didn't even finish a whole rod. i filled about 12-13 gashes. this stuff is so versitile for diy use i'll post the instructional vid to show how awesome it is.

then i knocked up this little bad boy to take off some of the excess alloy before using the same technique to file and sand each wheel. they still need alot of work but im getting there. i've improved it further by bolting it to the floor rather than the jack :)

so the work continues. lately i've been doing more work on khaled's rs-x then my car but im still getting through the body work.

here's what i've been up to

i have been on the search for an air compressor for sanding and spraying purposes for about 6 or so months now and finally picked up a 3hp 100ltr 20cfm beast. down side was it was 3phase and the pump was fairly shot. with the sale came a single phase 3hp motor so i converted it to single phase with a new pulley and motor then dismantled and rebuilt the pump and repaired the pressure switch.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/403903.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/403905.jpg

so with that i could finally run my 5" air sander sander

sanded the mkII bumper down and began paint prep.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/403907.jpg
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/403909.jpg

about a week later i went to a closing down sale of an engineering factory and picked up a heap of awesome stuff for really cheap. bout another compressor for $100 its a single phase 3hp 15cfm twin pump 50ltr. th bloke said it wan't working very well and didn't turn off due to a faulty pressure switch.
got it home cleaned it up adjusted the pressure switch and replaced a gasket in the pump and it was running like a dream! $500 saving on that one :)
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/403911.jpg

the same day i also scored a drill press clamp, 4 dawn 'G' clamps and a 9" bosch grinder all up a spent $190 inc. the compressor :D i was wrapped!
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/403913.jpg

so enough about the tools back to the car.
bonnet stripped back to bare metal because there was a nasty clear coat underneath that was giving me grief. the more i sanded the more it would just chip of and give me jagged edges.

i started work on the panel below the grille yesterday. as with just about every one i've ever seen it had some damage on it. maybe its because they are really fragile...? who knows. on face value it looked to be in excellent condition so i just thought i's sand it and be done with it. but as i began to sand away just like the bonnet underneath there was some previous repairs and some bog. so out came the stripper and it was back to bare metal again. under the bog on one side i found rust. so out came the welder. now some dickhead left the argon gas on last time he used his welder so it was all gone! a whole ****ing tank! so trying to repair a small rust spot was made really difficult with having to build up chunks of shitty welds to give me enough material to work with.
but in the end it worked well enough.

i had to use the same method on another spot. it was really thin so a trick i learned was to clamp a piece of aluminium to the underside of the sheet metal to act as a heat sink to stop from blowing holes from excess heat. works well
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/404267.jpg

next was the kinks in the side from the piece being bent then bent back to shape. so u get a stretched edge. to fix this i got out my map gas torch and heated the area till it was cherry red then taped it flat with a dolly underneath. then heated it again and cooled it rapidly with a wet rag to make the metal shrink back again. im really getting the hang of the panel beating :)
few before and afters

if u want to do this type of thing u wanna have a heap of different dolly's to work with. i've bought a few, made a few, modified them, you can never have too many.

next was to give it a through clean and then rust seal then prime

flat as :)

and in other news i just bought yet another set of old period correct wheels. and these are some really interesting ones. i bought them off ebay with no specs on them other than that they would fit. datsuns, ae86 etc. etc. i liked the look and by the picture I could kind of tell that they had some decent dish and offset so I made a bid and won them at $150

once i got them home for a good inspection they turned out to be better that i imagined. really awesome specs.
front: 15 x 7 0 offset
rear: 15 x 8 -4 offset

so heres some pics. really odd wheels. dragway brand, made in Brazil they are a 2 piece design with chrome plated steel barrels and 3 spoke alloy centres.

long over due update and a large one at that. i've been hella busy these past few months with holidays, Christmas, new years etc. also went to japan for 4 weeks which was really awesome! got to check out Tokyo auto salon which was only by sheer luck that it was on at the time I was in Tokyo. bought a whole heap of stuff inc. 2 1:24 scale s12's :)
so since i've been back i really wanted to get stuck into the s12 to get it finished so i can at least drive it.

so what am I up to?

i've reconditioned the door trims, these were rooted. so many cracks missing bits and creaks etc. so i've spent many hours on the hot gluing and screwing them back together. the've turned out perfect i just need to colour match some vinyl for the tops and im done.

rebuilt the window switches

next was the radio facia. it had been completely fu**ed by none other than gary's car audio. i wouldn't have paid $5 for this job

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/504610.jpg

this was his quality cd player install. hot glue, universal metal strips peices off a ford and black felt to fix his fu** ups. i wasn't even going to attempt to bring this back to life because i had a spare but it was way off in colour and just looked out of place and i really want the original look.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/504611.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/5/8/9/504612.jpg

so i spent ages picking away at the mounds and mounds of hot glue. i managed to pick every last bit out of the inside.

next was the felt on top. this was put here to cover the wood screws he'd used to secure the steel. and not just one hole bu 2 because he'd first screwed into the metal clip behind then screw another hole next to it. so the felt was stuck down with what? yeap u guessed it hot glue. dont get me wrong its great suff but like everything theres a time and a place haha. so i gently heated and picked away at it and managed to get it all off with out damaging the facia. i looked brand new once i'd finished, bar the 2 holes in the top. the holes i'll cover with an old pioneer badge off some old retro speakers.

next was sanding back and repairing the front and rear bumpers.

the front was easy just sanded it back with my orbital sander and prepped it for paint.

the rear on the other hand i knew was going to be trouble. i could tell from the out side that there was a previous repair. so i began to hack away at the filler to reveil a decent scar. it even looks like a scar because it was repaired with stapels then bogged over. but the stapels had rusted, split the bog and the paint. there was also another tear through the bottom of the bumper.

i did a lot of research in order to repair this gash. i looked into getting a platic welder i looked into weird and expensive adheasives but none could definately assure me a perfect repair. so i though i'd have a go and repairing it with a method that just came to me. the repair needed to be strong and very flexable being a soft polyurethene bumper.so instead of using fibre glass or something similar i deceided to go buy some polyurethane sealant/adheasive similar to silicone in a cauking tube. now on its own this stuff is fairly strong once cured but it would still tear open so i added some fibre tape to the mix. I cleaned and prepped the area and held the crack together with HD stappels on the put side. then i layed down a thin layer of the poly on then added a layer of the tape smothering and pressing it into the the poly like u would with fibreglass. i covered the patch completely with 3 layers of both the tape and the poly. same method used on the lower crack except i drilled a hole and the end of the crack to stop it going any further!

so this was all just a gamble really and it paid off big time! so after it had cured for 2 days i removed the stappels (because they would eventually rust ;) ) and its strong as! i even tried to tear it and it held so im wrapped with the result. the poly was only $10 for the tube and the fibre tape it really old plasters tape i had lying around.

now all that left is to fill the outside and prep for paint.

the next on the list was the exhaust. i've been meaning to do this for ages! but i left me argon gas on a few months ago and it all ran out so i haven't been able to weld for quite a while. i went and got another bottle the other day (fu** you boc and you registration and over priced fees and refills :thumbsdown_anim:) so this was only going to be a temp exhaust, nice an quite for RWC so it didn't need to be special. i made the whole thing from scraps of old exhaust pipe that i had either lying around or i grabbed out of the scrap bin at the local exhaust shop :) took me about 3 days on and off to complete but it turned out awesome and sounds really good. the muffler is an old ford one that was brand new but has been sitting around for about 5 years or so. glad i kept it.

thought i'd update the thread as its been a while. haven't been putting any solid hours in on the s12 lately because I've been renovating my laundry.

anyway i've managed to track down quite a few parts that i have been after for a while and a few brand new ones.
i bought a pair of rear hand brake cables brand new old stock to replace the old ones in there. i already replaced these once before with second hand items and they have suffered the same fate. once the plastic coating cracks the coil surrounding the cable rusts and seizes the cable.

next was door hinge bushes. these have been annoying me for a while. the door was sagging so much that the interior trim would catch on the sill and just about tear if off so this had to be addressed. my mate khaled need the same job done on his jdm s12 so did my 180sx and his s15 so we made a group buy of brand new brass bushes from nissan. bit of a tricky job but i've done it quite a few times so its pretty easy once you know whats up.

opens and closes like a brand new door now *sounds just like a golf*

and here's a few other recent acquisitions

finally got my hands on a mkII bonnet!!!!!!!!!! thanks to dean, top bloke to deal with. so i have every part required to bring it back to its original state. i had to get it couriered all the way from NSW. dean packed it up in a massive bonnet box and taped and covered all the corners in thick cardboard and the courier still managed to fu** it. bothe back corners were sticking out of the box when it arrived and were both folded over :( i was going to do the whole insurance thing but i had no time in the end. so i just repaired them and got on with life :) the bonnet had another old repair on it around the wiper nozzle hole. there was about 3mm of bog which scared the fu** out of me because i was thinking under all the primer there was going to be a sh** tonne of dents full of bog! so i flipped it over removed the heat lining and to my surprise the bonnet was in mint condition apart from the small amount of bog around the hole. so i stripped back the paint heated the bog and scrapped it out. the dent was accessible from the other side and was very east to push out using a comma dolly. no bog required! :D

and finally for this update i managed to track down an original working radio and tape deck for the old girl. there was a bloke on gumtree selling a gazelle so i asked if he would part with the radio and he declined a few of my offers up to about $100. then i tryed once more explaining i was restoring mkII gazelle back to oem and that most s12 owners throw them out as soon as they get the car and install cd players. re replyed saying "in that case, its yours. im more than happy to help out someone who has a passion for cars." how awesome is that? sold it to me for $20 plus post! top bloke.
