View Full Version : My 4agte tuff daily build yo!

So my name is Adam and ive been lurking on these fourms for a while now, id thought i will post up my build.

Its a 1984 KE70, with about 230,000kms. Maybe some of you saw it but i had it up for sale here a few months back after slowly loosing interest in the car.. well happy to say im glad i didnt. It had the standard 4k, 4speed in it, and i was trying to break it for an excuse to put a 4age in it, but i had no luck luck and failed!! It just wouldnt die. The car has been my fun daily for about a year and a half so i though id clean it up abit, throw some carpet back in her and give this thing a bit of love!! Simple!

So one day i was in it and started pulling stuff out to clean up the wiring! One thing lead to another and within a few hours i had completly stripped out the interior. Scratching my head not knowing what i was actually trying to do. The next weekend somehow the 4k was out 4 speed was in the bin and grease under my finger nails. What i was left with was pretty much a bare shell. The missus came up to me and said very politely..What the fuck are you doing?? and i said i dont really know! just trying to clean up some wiring. HAha

So..dont know how, but somehow i found a excuse to do my first conversion.

check out some PICS....

Seing as this car will be my daily and sometimes track this is what my wish list looks like

4agze converted to turbo
t50
t series
coilovers
put some carpet back in
re bush everything
bracing
brake upgrde
and of course all the little bits that go in between.

Pretty standard upgrades but lets see how i go. probably not gonna be the fastest of builds, but let's see how it goes

feel free to comment

BTW the intercooler in the first pic is way to big 600x300x70 for my liking..

i will be going a 520x220x65 it will be a much better fit i think.

So anyway i though id share my experience with installling my AE71 pedal box. Ive seen abit of info using templates and stuff and to honest there is really no need.
It was a piece of piss, and took all of about an hour. Keeping in mind i had all my dash out. I probably wouldnt even bother working around everything id just rip it all out.

Ignoring the holes i have already drilled, get the pedal box mounded in and nip up all the bolts making sure the brake booster is in. Get up under the steering wheel with a small screw driver and punch the 2 holes that need to be drilled. Dont hit it too hard just enough to get a mark from the engine bay side. This is where the red arrows are pointing.
24557

Next thing to do is simple..From the engine bay side you should not have 2 small pretrusions from where u just hit.. get a centre punch and hit it the other way. Now u will have both holes centre punched perfectly. Before you drill them scribe a line straight down the centers, than half way between. Done!
Where these 2 lines cross this is the middle of the big hole u have to drill. Save yourself the hassle and just go out and get a hole saw.
Once drilled throw some paint on it and Slap on a Clutch Master!!

I've installed 2 of these now and both times I didn't get the hole perfectly aligned..

You cant tell but still it was annoying to get it wrong and have to enlargen the hole with a die grinder.

adds
12th February 2012, 08:56 PM
Yeah the way i did it i was really happy the holes lined up perfectly, and a hole saw made the job headache less!

So today i went and picked up a few bits and pices. Got myselft a T25, T-series and some other stuff to go with it. just gotta source out a turbo manifold now. I probably want to go a low mount system.

So i was just thinking about the tail shaft and i was wondering if a ke70 front half will go into the t50 box?? will it work with the rear half out of a ra40??

Tommorrow im and gonna swap the huge intercooler i bought, for one a little bit smaller lol hopefull get some brakets made during the week and have that all mounted.

Stay tuned...

Looks good man, i like the black bay and intercooler mounting. I mounted my intercooler the same and i'd agree a shorter one will be much easier to route the piping.
KE70 tailshaft won't fit an AE86/71 T50, however it will fit a T18 or TA22 T50. 86 front shaft with T18 rear shaft is the standard recipe for 86/71 T50s to T series diffs.

So today i went and changed my cooler for something more practical..i got a 520x220x60. Fits in real nice and pipe work will look neater. Might just throw a can of black paint at it to give it the stealth loook
24609

gonna sort out a new radiator probably just go a ebay special..make some mounts during the week and get them both mounted it.

next on the to-do list is put a fitting in the sump for the oil return from the turbo. after that i should be able to bolt the box up to the motor and settle them both into thier new home.

Cant wait to do some skids!!

Bit of an update on my progress...

Been abit bit busy latley havent had much time to play with, but today i got some stuff done. First of all i took the sump of the motor so i can take it into work on monday and weld a oil return for the turbo. hopefully have it back on mid week. I bought a excedy heavy duty clutch so now i can finally mate the t50 and motor together. Also bought a new gearbox rubber mount. Alot of fucking around trying to put them both in seeing i have only got my car on stands, but i got there in the end. Im using a ae86 gearbox crosmember and to me it doesnt look good, as only 1 bolt either side lines up. Has anyone got and other ideas of what cross members to use or will the ae86 on be ok?? any advice?

24776

Progress shots..

2477824779

Test fitted the intake manifold, and all looks sweet now the cooler and intake manifold is all sorted i should be able to start plumbing that side of things up. I should have a turbo manifold all sorted by next week so than i can mount up my little hair dryer and work out the piping on that side.

2477724780

I was looking at the clutch slave and masters and is it reallly nessasary to run the hard lines?? can i just use a braided line straight to both cylinders?? Will this cause any issues?

Thought i would add what mods i plan for the car..

4agze AFM CAS
T25 turbo (for now)
Stainless steel low mount manifold ( untill i make a steam pipe )
front mount cooler
standard 4agze cpu
ae71 pedal box
ae86 engine cross member
ae86 steering rack
s13 brake master cylinder
JDM T50
T series with some sort of 1.5 way
15'' Superlights
Xt130 LCA
Ae86 JDM brakes
BC coilovers
new bushes everywhere
strut brace
adjustabe panhard
ae86 efi petrol tank

thaats about all from the top of my head but i will update as i go on.

Its been raining like crazy as we all know so today i improvised!!

nice job are you sure that is coke in that maccas cup? sporting that umbrella may say something quite the opposite.... just a tip. be careful there is no weld splatter on that thread... because its alloy, you do it up, the weld splatter will chew out the thread and it will be F'd.

Thanks for the advice... The an fitting is steel (pirtek had both alloy and steel) I tig'ed it for a cleaner finish but yeah it looks like splatter but it's just grinding dust. Appreciate the help tho.. Cheers.

As for the coke.. Well it was coke..until it rained!

Ordered a new head gasket from toyota so that will be on the to do list for the weekend, also have my alternator setup coming this week and also a s13 alloy radiator, so hopefully i will have all the motor stuff mostly sorted out.

Looks good. I will be interested to see how the GZE ecu copes as I'm doing the same.
Also that's an oversize crank pulley for increasing boost on a GZE so you could sell it on.

Looking good man, shouldn't be too much longer and it'll be running.

So, again its been some time since i have had a look at this tread! I have done a little bit of work to car, finding it hard to find spare time, work has me flat out!! But any way, I have almost finished off my loom, just gotta earth a few things and run power to the computer sort out my cor and wire in my fuel pumps, Tie up a few loose ends and that should be all of the wiring done..fingers crossed nothing blows up lol!!
Engine Bay Wiring

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/5/0/346200.jpg http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/5/0/346202.jpg

I got my rear end sorted. The T-series is in. Re-bushed the upper and lower trailing arms. Got some Tokico shocks, with new upper and lower bushes. Its got chopped springs still, but once some monies come my way i want to get some AJPS height adjustable spring seats and springs. Just gotta get a new sway bar and sort out my panhard rod as it fell short with the new diff.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/5/0/346204.jpg http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/5/0/346206.jpg http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/5/0/346208.jpg

Sits nice with 20mm wheels spacers!! (not gonna run them tho)

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/5/0/346210.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/252/img0699xv.jpg/) http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/5/0/346212.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/62/222ovj.jpg/)

Half my intercooler piping is done, gust gotta figure out how I'm gonna run the hot side. Weather i make a new bracket for the actuator, or just rotate the turbo and run the piping a bit different. Still unsure of how i want it.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/5/0/346214.jpg http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/5/0/346216.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/820/img0670pk.jpg/)

As for the front suspension, i bought some cusco camber tops and got some slotted and drilled rotors. Waiting on some braided lines to be made up. Gotta get new ball joints and LCA bushes and that should be done.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/0/5/0/346218.jpg

So its slowly getting there, as for the engine bay its pretty much done, gotta finish off some plumbing here and there and its pretty well done and i can finally turn this thing over!! cant wait! after all that i can put my interior back together and start on the body. My plan is am going to have it matte black with silver trim and get my wheels powder coated metallic royal purple!! Plans always change tho!!

That should do it for now
Till next time!

Should be good for 14psi on that computer bud, with the original gze injectors of course. They run pretty pig rich around 8-1psi but thats factory computers for ya.

So today I bought some Tune agent adjustable tie rod ends, new LCA bushes and ball joints and all the rest of my fuel system. I hope the parts turn up for the weekend so I can spend some quality time with the hack!

If things go to plan should be able to fire her up within a few weeks!!

whats left to do is finish of my all black interior, finish off my cooler pipe and mount my blow off valve tidy up a few wires here and there, few things to do on the brakes, exhaust,
cant think of much, theres really not alot to do cant wait to destroy a few sets of tyres. After all that i will be doing the body to make it look a little bit pretty.

Plumbed up my fuel system, just gotta run one more line to the rail and it's done. Hopefully be able to run power to my pumps and finish off a the wiring this weekend, only a few wires here and there to do and relocate the battery to boot. Down on the home stretch now, just finishing off the annoying bits. If I get enought time I might be able to crank the mighty 4a over within 2 weeks. Were you happy with the Jaycar push start button? it was disappointing it only illuminated when pushed on.. took a little bit of work to mod it to illuminate on IG+

car is looking sweet anyways man, when will you stick it up on the rollers for a readout?

Thanks man,

The start button, got it from autobahn, (narva brand) I haven't wired it yet, but on the packet it says I can have a few ways with the with the light. Always on, on when pressed, on when starting.

Probably keep the key barrell and make it so key has to be switched to on for the button to work. It's a pretty "fully sick" mod but it adds a nice touch to the interior :)

Would like to get it on the rollers early next year. Pretty interested to see how the gze ecu handles everything. Got no idea what figures to expect.

But yeah gonna smash out my brakes over the weekend and mok up some sort of air box. If anyone is interested a mate of mine gave me a r33 gtst air box and it will bolt straight up to the ke70 almost perfectly (with the battery box cut out) my cooler pipe even sits in the factory groove in the intake snorkel. Just don't like the look of it, so I'm not gonna use it haha!!

Updates shortly...

shame about the brakes mate,

I just spotted something though, and you will want to change it if im right..

The breather off the cam cover is not to be plumbed to the intake manifold, there is no PCV (unless you put one in) and therefor you will; A, have a boost leak, and B, before to long will blow those seals out of the bottom end from the turbo pressurizing the crankcase...if you haven't done so already.. (hope not.)

you can plumb the breather to before the turbo (like around the air cleaner somewhere) and plug the manifold hole. or you could again plug the manifold hole and run a catch can... (so many different setups possible) but i really don't want to see you pop a main seal from something so simple.

other than that i hope everything's coming along well!

I'm thinking just to run, from the rocker cover to a vented type catch can, than from the catch can to the manifold.. Will this be ok..?

Casey-G
27th December 2012, 10:05 AM
Nope, it'll create a leak that way.

Either run from the covers to a vented can n leave it

Or run from the covers to a sealed can and then to the intake of the Turbo..

Or just run from the covers to the intake of the Turbo if you font want a catch can.

Hey so this weekend I finally got a bit of time to work on the car, been busy latley with work and family stuff. Cant really remember where i was up to with this thread but since i have got the car running pretty good. Its running about 10psi and feels great. full boost is at around 3400rpm gonna leave it there for now untill i get a tune, and than ill wind it up just a tad. got some heat wrap and shielding in and in place. finished off interior, almost. Engine bay is done. Got my exhaust. Ended up getting a Full 3" stainless system. Re did my fuel system in my boot becaust i HATED how i set it up the first time, compare the pics, the new setup turned our great i think.

So thought id give a update, car is pretty much finished, been taking it for a few short drives around the block and it pulls hard!! Comes on boost Quick, handles awesome, and sounds tuff, I cant get enough!

Defiantly a improvement from the 4KC and cut sprigs lol.

I also acquired a F-series diff that I'm rebuilding to make place of the T-series later on. and i will also change the T50 with a W5X box. I want to get rego on it shortly after i finish the body, than I want to book in a tune to see how much horse powers it has and make sure its running ok. Ideally I want to get everything engineered properly but for now i will try get a 'Blue slip' than when i have some more cash it will be engineered. So not much else to say..Ive started on the body and getting it ready for paint very soon
