Hey all, pre-empting Sams request for info, heres a start on a database for late Toyota coilpacks.

Ive been using these for about 4 years or so now and have sold many sets on conversions I have done as well as just parts sales for other peoples projects. Some basic facts and info from my experience.

These coils have the igniter built in. This igniter fires on the falling edge of a 5V square wave. Dwell times between 2 and 3 msec work fine. They are extremely rugged and reliable (not including a few recallss etc Toyota conducted, which I believe were all to do with Indonesian made coils, not denso Japan).

To give you an idea how rugged they are, I have probably sold/installed a few hundred and although I have had a few DOA's (dead on arrival), I am yet to see one in service stop working. Maybe Ive just bee lucky.

They will also support over 100Hp each (per cylinder) with boost pressures up to 23 or 24psi no problem to them, even when firing in waste spark config.

Heres a start for a database, from a few motors I have around atm.

http://www.kaizengarage.com/images/toyota_coilpacks/CIMG2163.JPG

These were put with the rubber seals more or less in the same plane so you can get an idea of comparative height.

Source vehicles and part numbers from left to right:

90919-02227 ST215 Caldina 3SGTE
90919-02230 GXE10 Altezza AS200/Lexus IS200 1GFE vvt-i
90919-02239 ZZE120 Corolla 1ZZFE
90919-02240 NZE121 Corolla 2NZFE
90919-02236 SXE10 Altezza RS200 3SGE Beams dual vvt-i

Other coils that I have used a bit which aren't pictured are 2AZFE Camry and 1NZFE. Both of these are longer types, whcih are useful in certain motor like porsches and jags where you need extra reach. Similar in length to the GXE10 ones pictured above.

As a note, also following up som something Sam asked. I have the following plug kits available for sale. These took a lot of hunting and the three components are from three different countries.

http://www.kaizengarage.com/images/toyota_coilpacks/CIMG2167.JPG

The price is $15 per kit (per coilpack). Please let me kow if anyone needs them. I had to buy a few.

wow Anthony I am impressed. I appear to have 2NZ coils but I need to check. I have written down the cable colours and the part numbers but I don't have it on me. Do all these coils have the same connections? or use the same colour standards? I need to find out how to connect my yaris coils asap. I will post up a few pics on here when I get a chance. Also Anthony I am putting an article together on my website, can I use your pics and info with credit given to where ever you like?

Yeah I guess that's OK. All the coil packs have the same wiring. looking into the coil pack socket, or at the back (wiring side) of the connector with the clip at the top, the first pin is Earth, the second is trigger (IGT) the third is ignition feedback or confirmation (IGF) and the 4th is Ign 12V.

The wiring changes a lot from model to model, but the pinouts remain the same.

no, they're all too tall for that. the next best thing is 4 1JZ coils and a 4 channel igniter. not quite as neat though.

Some information I bumped into.
Here are the Toyota part numbers for the 1ZZ-FE coil pack connectors:

! x Connector: 90980-11885
Pins (x4): 82998-12440
Toyota connector pins with 160mm wire - Toyota P/N 82998-12340 (USD $4.43 each)

Pinout, looking into the coil connector moulding itself :

Left to right : Ground - Trigger - Tach - 12V

Also for those with Aftermarket ECU's:-

The dwell should be set as follows:
8V 6.3 ms
9V 5.3 ms
10V 4.4 ms
11V 3.8 ms
12V 3.2 ms
13V 2.7 ms
14V 2.4 ms
15V 2.2 ms

yeah that info is above as well :) Not too many aftermarket ecu's run voltage dependent dwell, for those that don't 3msec works fine.

Yeah I guess that's OK. All the coil packs have the same wiring. looking into the coil pack socket, ]or at the back (wiring side) of the connector with the clip at the [/B]top, the first pin is Earth, the second is trigger (IGT) the third is ignition feedback or confirmation (IGF) and the 4th is Ign 12V.

The wiring changes a lot from model to model, but the pinouts remain the same.

I am a bit confused with the wiring. Is it Earth, (IGT), (IGF), Ign 12V looking from the front (looking into the connector) with the clip at the top from left to right or looking from the back wiring side left to right? Can someone confirm the correct way to look at it.

Thanks in advance

ToddW

Theyre both the same thing. Either looking at the male terminals molded into the coilpack itself, clip at top, left to right, or looking at the back of the plug with the wires coming out toward your eyes - clip at top.

Here's a pic to help explain...

total noob question, if i convert to using these, will i need to retune my non statndard ECU?...

Anthony

Generally speaking, no you won't.

Sam-Q
5th March 2010, 12:15 AM
when I went from waste spark with 2 x twin outlet coils to waste spark in the quad coils the tuner adjusted the dwell time a bit, don't ask me why though as I don't know crap about those kind of things

Anthony
5th March 2010, 12:29 AM
Different coils need different dwell times, simple as that.

Thanks again Anthony for clearing that up for me. I misread your original post and my confution snowballed from there.

Thanks for the help!

what coils do you use on 16v 4age Anthony?

Anthony
14th September 2010, 05:55 PM
depends on the cover style. flush type (bigport) id use 2nz for a neat fit. recessed (smallport or ze) id prob use 1zz

If you use these coilpacks in an ae71, you will find that your tacho wont work.

It can be fixed by doing this mod to the tacho board.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/showthread.php/24743-AE71-Tacho-mod-for-modern-ignition.

Have a good one.

nice work Matt, is this the same as an AE86 in the process?

LittleRedSpirit
8th February 2011, 05:45 PM
Im sure its similar, i guess I could take the 86 cluster I have apart and see what the board looks like.

I think I read somewhere that the ae86 has a similar resistor to swap, although from the photo I found on the interwebs, its in a bit different spot. I just used the values I knew from the info posted on club 4ag and compared to the resistor values as tested on the ae71 board. I swapped the capacitor and did a few experiments trying to get the right resistors in the right places. Its similar in that you only swap the one resistor I guess, its just doing the right one. I hope everyone does the 1 hour of work and does this mod if they have a dead dial in the dash, its working great. im gonna go shoot a video of it so you can see exactly how good it works.

Good Info.. Could the 5v could be split to feed to coils? or it will be to much and the volt will drop causing it to not to trigger them?

coilpack adapter plate?

no only 20v, I was going to make it for the 16 as well and I only needed 5 people to say yes in advance and I would of done it but no just one or two.

you can use the big port valley cover on the small port cam covers, same bolt location just a little taller
allowing you to use the taller coil :)

also 227 coils are used on the fwd beams as well as caldina like anthony said
the beams now uses 39 coils as the 36 no have been stopped from production ,you would just have to change dwell time like anthony said or you can use 227 which is the same as 39 coils anyway

Hey Guys,

I am just going to thread dig this thing up out of its resting place to ask, does anyone have a list of lengths for the different coilpacks mentioned here?

I have been recommended to use the Yaris coil packs on my 1G that I am deleting the dizzy from for purposes of neatness and sequential injection in my 2 door ke70 sedan.

I just wanted to compare some lengths and see what would sit the neatest in the 1g Valley.

Thanks for any help guys.

Cheers, Andy
