Hey everyone,

This is my 1987 AE82 Toyota Corolla Twin CamIve owned it for just over a year, and am madly in love with the car. Its different, odd and it has a quirky box shape. So the plan was to set it up as a daily driver race car but at the same time not butcher the car up and keep it looking as close to original as possible. I have done all the work myself and have learnt many things about this car and also about anger management and patience ;) haha

Heres how I bought the thing:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/333974.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/21/5376765119d0789ec343b.jpg/)

The car currently weighs ~900 KG without much of the interior and some bucket seats, to reduce weight.Unfortunately the car has blown two head gaskets in the past on two different motors, and has since earnt the nick name "The 4ABHGE" (lol) and because of this it no longer runs the standard 86 KW Bigport 4AGE but rather a Smallport 4AGE which had 103 KW from factory.

As it stands now, the only modifications done to the motor is a home made Cold Air Intake and a TRD 0.8mm head gasket.
The suspension is fully adjustable AE92 STD coilovers which were made to fit the AE82 by MRP, and an adjustable whiteline rear sway bar keeps the back from rolling around.

I have 3 sets of rims, 15x7 949Racing 6UL's, in bronze and black for daily and track use and the other set, which used to be for daily use is from a Holden Gemini and are 14x5.25(ish) with a decent amount of offset (Currently for sale!) And some recent piccies:

So opened my packaging and found some instructions because this is such a difficult part to fit...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/347570.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/401/imgp8609s.jpg/)

Wait... what? Greeaat...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/347572.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/266/imgp8611z.jpg/)

Regardless I smashed the part into my car and took some happy snaps. Rebels gonna rebel.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/347574.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/252/imgp8591.jpg/)http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/347576.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/11/imgp8592e.jpg/)http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/347578.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/403/imgp8593.jpg/)http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/347580.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/802/imgp8594.jpg/)http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/347582.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/507/imgp8600.jpg/)http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/347584.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/818/imgp8601.jpg/)http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/347586.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/210/imgp8603.jpg/)AE82OC REPRESENT!!http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/347588.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/840/imgp8596k.jpg/)

Brace does wonders for the car. Toyed with my shocks a bit again and it feels awesome, you couldn't make a car handle much better in the wet, unfortunately in the dry it understeers a tad.
My only fear is the rear is too stiff for the front which is feeling funnier and funnier. With a few more goodies and a rear alignment Im sure its gonna feel different again.

Cant wait to tinker with this thing on holidays.. and race it!!#http://www.ae82.net/images/smilies/biggrin.png

Thanks mate! 15x7 +36. The front brakes are from an AE92 GTi or SX series 2. They were done by a previous owner and do really well with the slotted rotors. :)
I reckon the are the most underrated cars toyota ever made! Overshadowed by initial d and the 86

Not much to update.

I went on the TOCAU cruise and showed alot of the newer corollas how its done through the twisty stuff!

Also I liek angry birds.

- Track wheels dont fit on the car at this height, need to play with spacers and camber to find the ultimate fitment possible at this height.

- I won the GSS I <3 cars contest which is pretty rad, so lots of free stuff coming my way :D

Thats pretty much it, just getting ready for a track day which I'm not sure when is going to happen lol

Just getting ready for 2 or 3 track days coming up.

Got tyres fitted up, front studs fitted in (waiting on rears, got the wrong ones), spacers and a few more little things...#

also...

Wheel bearing issue just turned out to be a loose nut on the driveshaft :S
I tightened it up and it should be fine. Only thing is that an oil leak showed up today leaking from my drivers side diff seal...oil all under the car. Guess what's now on the to do list for next week...

Also swapped the dizzy over from the sx as it doesn't leak and fixed the timing, from what i can tell the power is more linear and responsive now. I put some engine covers back on to neaten it up and hide some of those little leaks too hahaha#

Went up to Winton today with a few mates, had a ball!

Passing GTR's and WRX's and getting TX3 drivers mad.

I had an issue with the R888's, not only was the weather cold, but they're just too big for the car and i couldn't warm them up regardless of what tyre pressure I ran. This caused them to be really snappy and unpredictable which made the car a handful all day... it was pretty fun though :P
The A1RM's pulled up better than anything I have ever experienced, felt great braking later than all sorts off cars!

But, I wasn't happy with my suspension setup, the front is rolling around too much compared to the rear and the grip of the tyres and brakes is too high for the springs so the nose is diving and the car is rolling too much through the corners for my liking.

I was just starting to gel with the car but decided to call it a day in session 3 due to doing in my rear wheel bearing and a few mates having some bad luck of their own.

Anyway, here are my session times.

Also, found the little biatch knock coming from my rear drivers side caliper - everything is tight but the top half wobbles, slider pin things worn maybe?

Oddly enough, The new spring rates are 10/8k whereas the ones before them are 6/4k. They seem to be working alot better with the car and the shocks, and surprisingly have a very comfortable ride (dafuq?) the car is more planted, stable, easier to drive and much more predictable on the limit of grip. Very happy with them! :)

Another day at winton!

Got there as soon as the gates opened at 7 and were the first to pick a spot. Swapped the tyres over and just did usual maintenance checks as per usual to get ready for the day.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/401186.jpghttp://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/401188.jpg
Sitting purdy

There was a slight mix up with the groupings so I only got an outlap and inlap in the first session when I took a friend around but immediately I could tell that the car felt very different to last time, alot more grip and predicability. Brought it in and refined my tyre pressures, and found my oil cap was leaking because I didnt tighten it properly lol

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/401190.jpg

Got the full second session. The group had a mix of cars, but got held up by an XR8 and Mitsu Starion. Unfortunately after my hot lap my fire extinguisher came loose and was flying around the cabin so I called it a sesh...Considering I was aiming for a 46er I was stoked when I found out I had done a 1:45.7

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/401192.jpg

In the third session I further refined my tyre pressures, adjusted the rear shocks to an increase oversteer tendency and then removed the passenger seat because racecar. Also, I had a massive powersteering leak so my dad cut his sock and put it over my PS reservoir LOLLOLL it did the job.Ended up pushing a bit harder but the brake fluid was going spongey and lacked feel.
The session ended and I pulled a 1:45.2 another improvement!!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/401200.jpg

The car was feeling great, the suspension was feeling spot on but the brake fluid was letting the car down. So we gave it a quick bleed at the front and that gave me so much more confidence. I took the car out in the last session and realised I didnt have to brake from turn 2 through the sweeper until the first hairpin! the car suspension was amazing. But the day was starting to cool and I thought I had less grip when in actual fact I was pushing the car harder than ever!

I finished the fourth session with a new PB of 1:44.4420 !!!! my jaw dropped when I was told and I couldnt wipe the smile off my face :D

It was an amazing day that was run quite smoothly, nobody had any big dramas and were all able to drive home. Thanks to OzRenault and MelbS15 for organizing the day, particularly OzRenault for giving me a spot, thanks!! :)

After stalling for such a long time, I thought that I should get the exhaust done. The exhaust setup I had previously was a fairly standard setup apart from the straight through xforce muffler with dodgy welds. This caused many exhaust leaks around those weld points... It was loud, droney and no better than standard, actually if anything it was probably worse.

So after making a few orders the mailman made a visit last week dropping off these two Magnaflow items. A High-Flow Cat Converter and a Straight through muffler both in 2.25 inch.

So I went about fitting them up at the exhaust shop. After getting quotes from many places and advice, I went to TrueFlow in Melton. Walked in and told them that I wanted a 2.25 mandrel system and ill supply cat and muffler etc etc.As I returned to collect the car, I found that they not only welded in the cat and muffler, but they also kinda remade my secondaries and flex pipe!! Not bad bit of work when they didnt even charge me a cent over what they quoted :D

I didnt end up going with a tip, I like how raw it looks as it is... lol

I took it for a spin right away and found the car to be less droney. When you are cruising I actually found it easier to talk and listen to my passeger than before, I wasnt yelling anymore hahaOnce you put your foot down it turns up to 11! I found that there is alot more response, torque and power! She even chirps easier in 2nd! :D

After drooling over a certain KE70 I have always wanted a particular set of rims, so after waiting patiently for a few months the perfect set popped up for an awesome price. So I made the trek to Sydney to pick them up.

The car used oil more than it did petrol (went through almost a litre on the way up, and another on the way back down LOL) and had axle binding issues due to my new driveshaft being a too long. :(

Regardless we made it up and back in one piece, although I do have a sore back (dem NSW roads...) and am still sweating and dehyd thanks to the lack of A/C on two 40+ degree days!! hahaha

Tuesday to Friday this week has been hectic!!!
- Stripped the car right out
- Changed rear toe bolts
- Changed rear calipers, pads and rotors
- Changed to braided lines all round, newer corolla ones on the rear, celica ones on the front! (ffffuuu HEL)
- Swapped pads and rotors on the front - left to right - so rotors are now facing the right way
- Changed driveshaft
- Changed front left hub
- Changed gearbox oil
- Changed air filter
- New wheel alignment
- New tyres fitted for monday :spiteful:

Car feels tremendously better! Heaps more grip than before even on skinny kumho tyres!! and there are no brakes at all.... that is until theyre warm then they're friggin fantastic!!

Also a couple of pics, because i know how you all like pics!

Tried on 10mm spacers on the rear for lols... its a bit too much poke for my liking, still didnt rub much though :P hahahttp://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/504025.jpghttp://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/504026.jpghttp://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/504027.jpghttp://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/504028.jpgNew tyres...

Old vs. new axle... longer one was axle binding as it was too long :(http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/504030.jpg

Stock vs. HEL brake lines... rears fit perfectly fine, the fronts didnt... luckily used Jo's Celica GT4 front braided lines which fit better than the "AE82" ones...http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/5/5/5/1/504031.jpg

Such sweet sweet cars.

My first car was a NZ new GT liftback...

(like this http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/toyota/auction-557604780.htm )

Similar story, had wound up with a small port.

I seriously miss that car. Really.

The great 80's linear styling, the cheapness of parts from wreakers, the amount of beer that could l fit in the boot/ rear seats (until the boot holes were discovered! (rust)).

Handle fantastically, the guys that race the 2dr versions of your car (nz newt fxgt's) typically chuck 20v's in them.

Very under rated cars, and so cheap to run....

I should really just go buy another one!

- your cars a really clean example
- your dads evidently a top bloke lending you a sock like that!
