Hey folks,
Well I thought i'd get back into the 80's toyota scene again. I started to miss my old wagon heaps so i went out and got an RT142 Corona wagon. This is off tap - rediculously clean, very well looked after and maintained, no rust, everything works - pretty much the opposite of my old AE71 when i first bought it haha. but that was also the point.

The idea behind this this is it's a daily car for daily shit. I bought it cheap and clean so the only thing i have to do is bolt shit on. Easy, fast, simple, done. it won't be as crazy as my last wagon but it'll still be hot i guarantee :sunnies: It will also be legal height and rims will fit under guards....just.

- SPECS -
'85 RT142 Corona CSI wagon
22RE
Manual
completely stock
NO RUST
Kelway strut brace
MA61 wheels
some Avante specs have been added to it - velour interior, adjustable steering column, electric this, electric that.
had a respray 2 years ago and an engine rebuild about 40k ago so it's pretty fresh
Came with a LEGIT RWC...ZOMGGTFO!!! that never happens right?
the old owner kept EVERY reciept for this thing. it came with a folder of them. Love it!
it's a bit 4x4 spec at the moment but it'll get better :sunnies:

on an urgent note i do want a black wagon rear bar - the avante one is off a sedan and looks haggis. can anyone help me out? i've tried the wreckers.

Cheers guys, there will be more soon :D

Rona wagon with roofracks n shit...rad!

Yeah I have to say mine had avanti bars when I first bought it and I'm not a fan, I replaced them with the standard black.

The front avanti bar also has a huge reinforcment bar inside it and weighs heaps in comparison.

What are the specifics on those coilovers?

Jacobxxx

Yay! Will be cool!

myke90
20th May 2012, 10:26 PM
the coilover specs are 8/6 on some ebay coilover sets but i'm hopeful you can request smaller spring rates. 7/5's would do fine. anything harder might be over the top.
they are 'ae86' coilovers so would the rears fit an RT142 wagon? i know front 86 springs fit, but what about the rear springs?

as for the bars, i don't mind the avante front but the rear is definately getting replaced.

I really can't express how happy I am to start off with a clean shell this time lol it's makes shit 1000x simpler!!

hao.

I'm kinda jealous, Michael. Good buy! :)

Yes the the rear setup from that coilover kit should fit fine. Henrys silver wagon in the original post runs ajps rear spring perches which are made for E7/ 86 rear springs.
And this should look awesome once everythings done!

Ever driven a 2.6L Sigma? Similar to that, a little sluggish and won't really rev past 5k but with oodles of torque to play with.

On topic, this thing is crazy clean. Nice pickup man :)

wat are the 22re motors/other corona motors like to drive?i picture it to be like a big 4 ac haha

same speed as a 4age sprinter if not a touch faster (pending a few variables)

but better to drive in most situations

much better than a big 4ac

shift_rook
24th May 2012, 09:14 AM
Touch less power with a bucket more torque. Easier as a beginner skid car as you don't need the same entry speeds. Once you do the basic mods though it gets a bit harder to get power out of it without spending bigger dollars.

The look of those coilovers is very questionable dude. You don't think you'd be better off just getting a better quality insert with lowered springs. Then going the proper stuff when funds permit? I know they're cheap but if they fail in the first 6 months i'd be very unsure if there's anyone on this side of the planet that can rebuild them for you..

AJPS
25th May 2012, 12:34 AM
yeah 100%

looks good

myke90
25th May 2012, 02:47 AM
Yeh the 22RE is quite good for daily use. Heaps of torque but it dies after about 4-5k lol does the job!

Yeh I know the coilovers are heaps cheap china brand stuff but lots of ppl say alot of things about cheap suspension and it's not always the case. there are MEGAN coilovers available from the US that are under 1k as well that I may go for...
The way I look at it is that it's just a cheap cruise around daily so there's no point going all out on the suspension. I'll probably do a skid in the rain on a full moon once a year and that's about it lol. Cheap stuff only breaks if you hit shit IMO :P

But it'll be good to be the test dummy for this shit so ppl don't keep thinking 'ae86 coilovers - goodbye left kidney, goodbye right testicle' haha. If it fails Chris you have permission to say you told me so! I do believe ppl on track should use quality coilovers though.

All keep your eyes out for wagon rear bars too. None of the wreckers near southside Brizzy have any. If you know a guy who knows a guy with a bar then I wana speak with them :)

shift_rook
25th May 2012, 09:49 AM
For that price though you could very well get a quality set of inserts with springs to match. I'm sure Dave at AJPS could help you out easily. Seeming you're only using this for the occasional skid i doubt you'll be changing height often or corner weighting the car so the there's not much point in the coilover anywhoo. Just my 2c :)

myke90
25th May 2012, 10:26 AM
Yeh i've looked into spring n shock setups. Will cost about $750 all up which is all good. Unfortunately I'm a picky bastard and I want the car to sit at a specific height. I've done the measurements and I've worked out that the front end at the height I want will have less then 50mm shock travel with the stock struts. This is the main reason for going coilovers :) same price, way more adjustment and base height adjustment with full shock travel.

sam2306
25th May 2012, 09:51 PM
or you could cut the struts down and use the right inserts? bam you have the height you want with suspension travel and no piece of shit china coilovers.

myke90
26th May 2012, 01:25 AM
That was the other option but I'm still leaning towards cheap nasty coilovers haha meh, haters guna hate

Quick update.
Been cleaning up a few things since i can't afford the big stuff yet.
i took the rear bar off this hagard wagon.

then cleaned it up and wacked it on. not too shabby!
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/1/0/365954.jpg

didn't like the silver door frames and the old chrome front grill/light surrounds were looking a bit old so i bought some 2k and got my paint on.

looks pretty good. still have these to go on after i make the mounts for them. always wanted a set
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/3/3/6/283312.jpg

put some $20 steel roof racks on her today too. weren't a fan of the plastic ones. i'll get pics another time.

the front end on this is kinda exactly how i want it.
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TH0Ldkp1Zs8/TtBLlbiqEXI/AAAAAAAAArQ/5Tn2oZAFh7M/s1600/corona%2Bflush.bmp

do some measuring. how often will you use the height adjustment?

I finally got all that suspension in last year.
Here's the front.

myke90
16th March 2013, 12:15 AM
LOL Hao you fucktard!

stock borgy. there have been opportunities to get rid of it but she drives great, no whining. Rather spend the money on wheels :)

The box is W series though which is good. Disc brakes all around as well. recently replaced the handbrake lines with brand new ones. they haven't really helped. the handbrake is still heaps stiff and almost useless. maybe pads would change that?

Wagon86
16th March 2013, 12:41 AM
Disk all round nice. I just put ra60 lsd diff in mine. Is a direct bolt it. Cheap upgrade from borgy. Only badish thing is its is drum brakes. Still locks up tho

myke90
16th March 2013, 11:45 PM
oh sweet. if mine brakes i might do one of them.what series diff are the ones in ra60's? my mate had a whole IRS rear end for me from a sedan. i flagged it. Too much custom work to be done for just daily driving.

do ae86 front coilovers fit straight into rt142/st141? looks sweet man i just bought a st141 again for 800 today!
You'll need ae86 steering knuckles and camber tops to suit the corona, s13 ones apparently fit with a small amount of filling to the holes
Edit: And obviously ae86 hubs and brakes

hillzy
24th April 2013, 09:47 PM
ohhk thanks, sounded like he only bought the coilover strut and said it will fit in the other page haha

myke90
2nd May 2013, 09:18 PM
Hillzy - The coilovers i got can be welded on to any hub. i just pulled out my struts and chopped them so i could weld the base height sleeve at the bottom. i'm still running the stock corona brakes. If you bought the setup 2nd hand with AE86 hubs already welded on then of course you would need ae86 brakes and steering arms :)

myke90
2nd May 2013, 09:25 PM
Assailant - yeh the wagon rides as good as my silvia! corners so well and steps out in the wet if I want it to. Open diff makes it a bit sketchy when sliding. some of the bushes have been replaced by the previous owner. when i pulled out the pan hard rod to have it made adjustable it had brand new fulcrum bushes in it. wouldn't be surprised if there were alot more things like that done on her.

i'll post pics soon. Jap fender mirrors are on. I've been working on the new wheels lately too. They're coming along.

Wagon86
2nd May 2013, 10:14 PM

myke90

See what happens. I'm actually thinking I'll put the new wheels on this beast and drive it until the end of the year and then sell/swap for an ae86. Always wanted a clean hatchback 86 that I could do the right things to.

myke90
15th July 2013, 10:18 PM
The wags is pretty much done.
Here's some pics to explain some progress.

put fender mirrors on

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/1/0/510354.jpg

tried some of my mates wheels to see what sizes i wanted. these 15x8 -10 SSR Super Stars were awesome! perfect fit

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/1/0/510355.jpg

decided on these Work Ewing fins 15x6.5 -25. they were shit condition. black and green painted on them, chrome centers were flaking and oxodised. had center caps though. cracked them open and got some barrels spun up

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/1/0/510356.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/1/0/510357.jpg

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/1/0/510358.jpg

the inner barrels took some work. time had not served them well and the brake dust was a bitch to get off. pretty happy though at the end result. i put 2k clear over them to keep the brake dust from setting in again.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/1/0/510359.jpg

after cleaning everything else up, drilling, sanding, grinding, polishing, new nuts and bolts and piecing them all together, the old girl looks like this now
the final wheels sizes ended up being 15x8.33 -6

Rebuilt 18RGEU package with Haltech f9 ECU has been aquired.
Mostly bolt in except the crossmember. The plan is to put my BT20v ITB's to it and clean it up so it's mickey mouse. I also want to get some cams from a #210 18rg head to get a little more power out of it. 18rgeu's were the least powerful of the 18rg's at a crisp 125hp.
