hey guys,

just a question about engineering a 20v into a ae71.
because my model has the 4ac 1.6 by putting the the 20v i'm not upgrading the capacity. so i wouldnt have to upgrade my brakes or anything. and being a bolt in modification engineering will be fairly cheap, correct?

anyhelp greatly appreciated.

vic = trouble

I can give you the full list of whats required by law and its isnt pretty. Before someone tears your head off I suggest have a good search on the forums for 20v conversions. I can sell you the parts for the cooling system and for everything else go here:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/faq/index.php/BY_ENGINE/4age/20vRWD

I suggest a basic 16V conversion

Thanks champ.

is what i've been told about the capacity laws correct tho? because really all your doing is putting a efi head/setup on it. or is there more to it?

been to afew places to get quotes for my 4age into ae71:
quoted $550 for carby to efi conversion (4ac > 4age), but u needed to get a weight bridge cert, engine check that have been signed off by a rwc mech and a 02 check by exhaust or rwc place.
Also depending on engine power, brake upgrade may be required (used ae86 front brakes into ae71)

got another quote for engineering for the whole car @ $800
doesn't matter if u put a 4age, 4agze, 3sgte, 1uz, remove rear seats, roll cage, rx7 front brakes, diff conversion, etc..
its $800 for the whole test

thanks rhty.
im not going to be putting a cage or nothing in it just a stock 4age.
i'll do the conversion myself (mechanic)

was thinking of using brakes off a ae82 or something like that.
i had never heard of the "weigh bridge" before tho....

yea the dood said they needed to put down the new weight of the car with the new motor/equipment

choose jdm ae86 brakes cos they bolt in + aftermarket parts for the struts

did you have to upgrade any suspension in order to pass? did you leave drums on the rear aswell? ben.

as far as I know you only need to upgrade front brakes.

I was told by an engineer they have to check all the safety side of things

Emission's comply with the year of motor your installing
car stops in some standard stopping test
DB from exhaust complies
weight of car in comparison to brakes and
and the car has to be all round road worthy

most of the info you need will be here

was't told to do any of this.

as above best bet is to talk to an engineer and see what is required.

what you may be able to do is call a guy on the vic roads site (engineers list) and if you tell him what you are doing he can come down and have a look at what your doing. his name is sanjeev on the vicroad engineer list.. he did the engineer for my 4age in my adm sprinter.. and although i didnt have to mod brakes or anything like that.. im sure he will write you a list of thinhs he wants done. if the list is shorter than you think you are in the sweeeet zone!! and after a rigourous brake test youl be engineered..

hey guys,

i was wondering 4age 16v into the ae71 is easy to engineer (being a bolt in)
but what about a ke70 (4k motor) i know you have to change x member etc, but does anyone know or had one engineered in vic?

cheers, Ben.

ok keep in mind an engineers approval is basicly a roadworthy for a modded car. So it needs to satisfy basic roadworthy rules first.

Now off the top of my head what the engineer that I saw wanted:

approved tailshaft loop
upgraded brakes
stock ecu
air box (plenum)
stock polution gear like a charcol canister
strut brace
upgraded brakes
reinfoced radiator support where I chopped some holes

thats all that comes to mind right now

yeah no problem but you really need to find some engineer and talk to him, watch out for wackos though as my friend with his 20v lancer had a guy even telling him about the engineering of the struts and wanting a diameter upgrade...
