Hey, gayest question in the world but why dosent the 86 engine sound like a wrx boxer? Ive seen a few youtube clips of after market exhausts and it sounds just like any other 4 cylinder. Have they changed the stroke sequence or anything drastic like that?

Pretty sure the classic boxer note has alot to do with exhaust.

Ever heard those gay p platers in their non turbo foresters with only a cannon? They sound nothing like a wrx or liberty either...

Kind of like a V8 running no cross over pipe sounds different to one with

Its all in the headers, bolt ej headers on it and it.will sound like a rex. And for the record it is still very boxerish as they fire differently to an inline 4 (1342 vs 1432)

Like Gunner said, it's in the headers. Standard WRX dumps the two exhausts on each side together BUT the BRZ/86 crosses the exhausts over, which give a 'normal' 4cyl note. Many years ago, Subaru did one model of the JDM Legacy with cross over pipes, the customers compasined it didn't sound like a Subaru and the quickly changed back to the normal each bank exhausts joining together.

New libertys are the same again, and some wrx/sti models, but thats because of the use.of twinscroll turbos. Its suprising how many people will sacrifice drivability for that sound lol.

The thing I really like about this whole thing is, the headers that are poorly made for this car, will be easily identifiable due to the exhaust note. If its not equal it will have that lump. Also the length of header you could potentially run is pretty cool.

just like gunner and frak says, headers. im not 99% sure but when you fit equal length headers they lose that sound but gain performance

Well there you go, never thought an exhaust could make such a difference. What's the bet the BRZ comes with the headers to get the wrx noise

At full song the Gazoo Racing GT86 still sounds very boxerish.

Ill try and get a video tomorrow.
