Hey all

got sick of not drifting and the 32 is for sale... so thought i';d get stuck into building a cheap rolla up, I have to say that seeing Leigh pidwells car in action over the past year has made me want to get one, I battled him at Drift Fest last year and it was just damn quick for the basic set up it was! So i thought yeah im gonna do it lol So i started gathering bits and pieces and everything has been done so far by myself or with the help of Dec's from Garage 7 in Mt Barker and soon to be All Type Crash once i get the body work finished.

the story goes like this. I got a stock KE, after some bitch slammed into my daily AE92 writing that off. Needed a car for work hence the stock KE, thatr lasted around 2 weeks before i blew the HG on the shitty 4k motor... so hooked up a cheap S14 SR20DE halfcut and put that in there, but i thought well since i have the whole half cut i mas as well put the rack, power steer, crossmember and susp in too.. so i did all that and drove it NA SR for a while... still stock looking with 13's and rear blinds lol... put some good 15 inch tyres on it and took it out to lala for some skids and the thing lasted 2 laps before breaking the shaft that the thrust bearing carrier runs on.... sigh... engine out job to fix since with the SR in the rolla... there aint ANY room to get to bellhousing bolts.

It was at this point i decided f**k it... turbo it and do a bit of a build up.

So here are the specs so far with some pics to go with it.

Susp: S13 coilovers with AE86 tops, custom length with TRD blue shocks and a 6kg spring, custom length LCA's, bump steer adjusters, rack spacers Rear consits of TRD blue 8 way shocks and a 4.5kg spring, adjustable panhard rod and swaybars front and rear. RE001's all round and yeah... handles AWESOME.

Motor: S14 SR20DE+T stock internals with turbo gear bolted on, Power Enterprise PE1420 turbo, braided lines, Exedy 5 puck clutch, B&M Oil cooler and filter relocator kit, Greddy intercooler

Drivetrain: RB20 Gearbox with SR bellhousing, custom shifter location, R31 skyline diff housing and centre, currently a 3.7 will prob change to 4.1, unsure yet, mini spool to go with it, Shall be running a Twin caliper set up with one circuit for normal brakes and other for handbrake only.

Other specs and stuff to come/go on the car: Hydraulic handbrake custom made, brake bias valve, water sprayer kit, custom s13 modified knuckes, R33 4 pot brakes with 4 stud rotors. and some BIG wheels.

now for pics

Been busy today, did the firewall and welded that up... took me forever cause the stupid gassless mig i was using kept overheating, not to mention the foam high up under the dash caught on fire... lol dutched the whole car out with smoke thats for sure... I was pretty certain i got rid of it all before i started but i must have missed some.

heres the finished but un painted modded firewall.

i'll prime and paint it later and motor back in tomorrow.

Simon-KE70
2nd January 2009, 10:44 PM
ok more progress! firewall sealed up with silastic, primed and painted then motor back in... and yeah my measurements paid off cause it fits perfectly and theres heaps of room behind the motor now... joys!

turbo outlet and dump pipe clearance to firewall looks to be very close... hope i can get around that, in hindsight i should have cut that section out also but oh well.. i'll make it work.

hmmm update time.

got the rear end pulled out, theres a huge difference between the diff's and its going to be a lot of work to make it fit. i'll get around to it soon i guess lol.

Anyway, got the bigger brakes on, i plan on doing circuit work as well as drift so why not stop well also...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/6/0/2886.jpg (http://img392.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image083aq2.jpg)

Got a hydro handbrake made up also, mate of mine did it for me. not quite yet finished but just working out the positioning and so forth

http://img385.imageshack.us/img385/7024/image081qf9.th.jpg (http://img385.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image081qf9.jpg)

bought some rims also, may still get another pair in 15X10's but for now these are 15X8's -4's and fit well.

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/3043/image080lt0.th.jpg (http://img211.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image080lt0.jpg)

FEW more updates.... cage is booked in to be done, and i've started on the diff,,, its a nightmare and not as easy as i thought. lol .

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/6/0/2889.jpg (http://img224.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pb150165bw7.jpg)

too wet today! not to worry.

started mocking up twin caliper set up and making brackets for it, got one side tack'ed up and ready to fully weld. will come out good i think!

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/6/0/2890.jpg (http://img249.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pb170007ie8.jpg)

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/6/0/2891.jpg (http://img234.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pb170010cr1.jpg)

ended up finishing my diff, with the help of Drinkies also. I dont reccommend doing something like this with a car on axle stands thats for sure as you ideally need a hoist to get the diff in and out to double check measurements and so on.

havent done much over xmas and new years period but today i decided to get busy, pretty much doing all the little jobs that ive been leaving to last, cleaning up and redoing a few little things here and there.

started on fuel system but ran out of fittings, so that will wait.

diff is also finished too... real effort and i wont be doing it again in a hurry lol, drinkies ended up helping me in the end to get it spot on.

anyway heres some more pics

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/6/0/2892.jpg (http://img145.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pc040142sl4.jpg)
relocated fuse box... its in the inner guard now, right out the way and makes room for cooler pipes, battery going in the back.

http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/3241/pc040138ew4.th.jpg (http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pc040138ew4.jpg)
the almost finished diff, just need to weld sway bar mounts on and then paint it up. Got a 4.1 ratio with mini spool going in too, cause stock 3.7 diff is gay,

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/5691/pc040140lt7.th.jpg (http://img135.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pc040140lt7.jpg)
Close up, showing stuff.... yeah stuff.

http://img357.imageshack.us/img357/7344/pc040137bj4.th.jpg (http://img357.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pc040137bj4.jpg)
Fuel system, cclearly not finished. Bosch motorsport fuel pump. should do the job ;)

and a sneak peek as the lock to come.... Myself and Dec's from Garage 7 are working on a set of modified knuckles which will give a lot more lock, and less binding due to increased travel. Basically they will be made to order, much like jap spindles, and cheaper then jap items considering the rates these days... All professionally tig welded and braced up.

looks like shit atm really lol

but the potential is there. i really dont know why im building yet another car up... as ive done quite a few now (3 ae86's 1 of which was a ground up build, a cefiro and a skyline all built up) but the KE is a combination of all the spare parts i had in my shed, and time to kill plus a desire to build something again lol.

looks good mate,
did you shorten the diff at all? (had a quick read but couldnt see)
if not the superlites are going to be a bitch to fit under the rear, i had a hard time with my 14x7.5-4s with the same diff.
the conversion looks good, very similar to mine :P
keep up the good work mate

Simon-KE70
3rd January 2009, 10:43 AM
nah diff is stock length. its only 30mm wider each side which isnt a great deal to worry about, guards will be flared and they will fit easy enough. My origional plan was to run 15X10 -26 challengers.... but that was going to be more of a challenge to fit (no pun intended lol)

Simon-KE70
3rd January 2009, 04:54 PM
Diff is in!! yeah baby... all fits up too. will grab some pics tomorrow

I really like this car. Im a sucker for red.

Its interesting you got one with the spirit blue interior, but its not a spirit. I havent seen many with that combo really. Most I see are navy or beige as can be inside.

Its gonna haul!!:unseen:

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/7/6/0/3264.jpg (http://img56.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pc090006iv5.jpg)

R33 Brake master in place, i bent up the old lines to make them fit, all but one fitted so i replaced that, ditched the shitty toyota brake proportioning valve as the 33 master has a built in one, and prob more suited to disk rear rather then drums.

Roll cage is done! and its overflowing with awesomeness as Barney would say....

after an arvo of running around picking up and dropping off car in the heat, its now at AM Performance getting exhaust and cooler pipes made up.

Cage was made by Chris Kirby from Kelway fabrications... simply awesome quality work. I only took a couple of shitty pics with my phone cam but looks awesome up close. his number is 0404 027 105 if you are interested in similar work.

any idea on what colour u want it?

Simon-KE70
19th January 2009, 10:40 PM
going the same colour as a mate painted his sil80, its a satin red and looks quite tough really! to be honest its acctually a primer, and costs fuck all and paint is easy to match haha

yeah looks nice its just in the cams manual it says quote drawing 253-4 the connection to the lateral roll bar must be at roof level and yours seem to be low but if they ticked it of all good nice build

Simon-KE70
20th January 2009, 05:06 PM
yeah i believe there is an allowance for variation there tho, im not 100% sure i didnt do it. you talking about this pic here? http://img244.imageshack.us/my.php?image=image234ww8.jpg as thats at roof level.

buddyparts
20th January 2009, 05:18 PM

Simon-KE70
20th January 2009, 05:20 PM
havent got a cams book in front of me so im not 100% sure what part of the front let you are referring to, feel free to point it out if u can mate im keen to see what you mean, just so i can ask my cage builder.

and BS to what you said... ive seen you drive, if anything i wont be able to shake you off my door

Rex_Kelway
20th January 2009, 06:58 PM
Sorry BuddyParts,

The lateral roll bar is connected at what is accepted as roof level. Simon's roll-cage is built 100% or to exceed CAMS structural and material specs. All of Rex's safety cages are...

Rex takes these things very-very seriously...

Nic19
20th January 2009, 08:03 PM
man this things awesome. wish i had the money to buy the bits for mine i need. cant wait to see it done man.
ps i got the brakes.

buddyparts
20th January 2009, 08:10 PM
sorry rex kelway

I wasnt saying the cages were bad quality i was just asking about the front legs and why they were so low down my understanding was that the car shouldnt have any gaps between the cage and the roof so if you roll the roof wont crush 2 inches till it hits the cage. All good top quality on a very worthy car.

Simon-KE70
20th January 2009, 08:24 PM
either way (since im fuzzy on the rules) i am very very impressed with Kelway's work and i'd recommend him to anyone.

And i look forward to thrashing it, and possible tandems jay, i dont think ive drifted with you before...

Schnickles
20th January 2009, 08:57 PM
Hi guys ive researched cages quite extensively i agree the bars are a bit lower than the ones ive worked with, some people do this to make it easier to weld in the car as long as it meets the drawings and regulations its ok. Heres the link if anyone is interested - http://www.camsmanual.com.au/pdf/10_gen_req/GQ11_Schedule_J_Q109.pdf

Rex_Kelway
20th January 2009, 10:20 PM
Sorry BuddyParts,

Rex just re-read His first reply and it did sound quite condescending.

Anyhoo, When they say roofline. they mean as 'close as reasonably possible'. It becomes a very careful juggling act between placement and headroom. Most cages fall into the area pictured because any further along the radius toward the roofline puts them directly into the area required for the drivers head.

Any structure is strongest when loads are fed into a corner. Hence the diagonal is fed into the centre of the bend, likewise the lateral bar is fed also into the corner.

Rex judged it more preferrable that should the worst happen, it would be better for the roof skin to collapse slightly into the air gap between it and the roof, than to have the roof act directly onto the lateral bar then directly onto the drivers head and spine.

Remeber when you research the difference in preparation allowance. While practically being no harder to actually build, theoretically 'perfect cages' all necessitate the complete removal of the roof. An option really only available to top level motorsport teams.

Sorry to trash your thread Simon...

Simon-KE70
20th January 2009, 10:45 PM
no trashing there rex im glad its all clarified and out in the open. As said im more then happy with the cage

in regards to rex and roof removal, i got my roof bars to touch the roof, without taking the roof off and plenty of welds the whole way round, where theres a will theres a way, not saying the cage is bad by any means, its actually above average, but just pointing the fact out. Also the build looks pretty sweet, still keen to chuck my fat around at mallala

driftke70,

You may have misunderstood.

It is not at all difficult to get the main hoop, front legs or roof diagonals to touch the roof.

Bends always form a given radius, so the intersections/nodes can never fall tightly into a corner. You have to choose carefully where the intersections are made. As Rex said before, the roof bars were placed in this location because it leaves the most head-space for the driver, and a safe air gap for any deformation to take place and places the intersection at the same point as the diagonal.

He could've just as easily placed these hard against the roof. It would have been no more difficult at all, but they would've been directly above the drivers head. This itself is no problem if the seat is modified and mounted lower. But with a normal seat height, tall driver and helmet you can do the maths.

CAMS don't specify that 'plenty' of welds should be made the whole way round the tube. They specify that ALL welds MUST be made the ENTIRE circumference of the join. Again, no harder to achieve, even if the bars do touch the roof...

The removal of the roof and pillars is generally required where an uncompromised or 'perfect' structure is to be built.

Rex hope this makes things a little clearer.

driftke70
25th January 2009, 10:03 PM
my bars touch the roof, they couldnt be further from the drivers head and this infact makes them further away, and they have welds the whole way round.

but if it makes sense to you thats cool

time for another update!

spent last week getting it all working... lots of drama;s and last min issues and then decided to go skidding sat night just gone. So this meant getting tune done tomorrow. The turbo i got had boost creep issues and we couldnt run less then 1 bar. now this wouldnt be a prob normally but on a NA motor we didnt wanna risk it.

soooo... we ended up pulling timing out the map to stop it detonating.. .and as a result it lost power and response in fact it was a laggy POS first time out.

real rushed on the body work to get it out but meh that will be done in good time.

drove ok in the end i guess, considering i had bugger all power below 5000 rpm and no brakes.

have changed front sway bar to a thicker TRD item, changed LCA and sway bar links around a bit and made up custom items to try and solve a few issues i was having before. Also have changed the diff ratio to a 4.1 from the 3.8 that was in there to try and improve performance.

did some more work the other day... so much more to go yet tho. been doing the body and mechnical side of things. but now im just trying to finish the mechanicals and then get it back down on the ground then i'll do the body work.

solved my sway bar link issue with the aid of some brand new links which were cheap and available off the shelf. instead of being straight up and down they are 90 degree which meant i had to make custom mounts on the bar and LCA to fit them.

so while it might not look the prettiest... i believe it will work a treat, the sway bar now is locked solid to the LCA's and cant flex like it did before with the shitty bushes.

update on my motor:

taken it to turbo tune and had it pulled apart to find out why it lost oil pressure... pretty relief valve was stuck open and it looks like a small metal shard has gone thro the pump also as the gearset and housing is scored.... the motor however is fine, bearings are mint and no damage to anything other then the pump. so thats all good news really.

so while its apart i'll put DET pistons in it, new rings, new bearings and a new oil pump + head gasket in it so that once its back together it will be a fresh SR20DET and not a DE+T.

Dude, need to ditch that sticker on the front bumper will look 100000x better!

maybe so mate but i look after the people who look after me in the form of exposure so the sticker stays (wells its off now for the new owner, but next car will have sticker in same spot)

and yes... car is sold. Its still in SA and belongs to a dude in the barossa... maybe one of Eddies mates haha

Bloody hell!

So you buy a car, build it into something capable of beating the motor doner car and sell it?

???????

I actually like that, another xe7x chassis next? or something longer?
