Toyota 86 / GT 86 / FT86 wreck alert !!!!!

A few weeks back saw a Black Toyota FT86 on a truck near Goulburn NSW, Melbourne bound. It had taken a big hit up the bum . Would say they would write it off but like most pranged cars it would have been repairable , only a matter of time and money .

So I would expect this to turn up at auction soon if the owner doesn't buy it back. Of course it will be a non repair write off ---- so a parts car or fix as a track car ??????????

Anyone out there know what happened to it before and after I saw it ????

Matt
16th August 2012, 05:12 PM
Interesting predicament the owner would be in, a long wait for another one - Toyota is quoting up to 18 months on these 86 now or do they go out and buy a replacement car.

I bet a smashed GT86 / FT86 would be still worth be worth a mint as allot of workshops would kill to have a spare engine.

Delazy

Diff/gearbox/engine would all fetch big $$$$

It would definitely worth abit in parts...

Saw pics floating around of one that had taken a truck in the drivers side door also

Matt

Is this the car you saw bob???

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/4/9/398415.jpg

And also found this

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/4/9/398417.jpg

I have also heard of another that has had a minor front ender being held together with racing tape as there is a 14 week wait on the parts required to fix it.

AIROCOBRA
16th August 2012, 11:19 PM
No Matt , It was definite , a black car and the major hit was on the left side not the right , but a similar amount of deformation.
Shit that make 3 down already.

ah that bottom blue one!!! that's the one from this week. that's orrong road in WA. my brother saw that on the side of the road.
some douche changing lane, and went into the 86.

I want the back boot mat and the spare tyre xD;;

Doubt the Perth one will be written off, looks fairly cosmetic to me ( maybe some minor damage front links).

Blue one has both front and rear damage, rear ended by an r34 apparently at 90kph (most likely 50kph). Direct hit into chassis rail means can't open door

Matt
18th August 2012, 04:27 PM
Yeah the blue one is definately written off... alsways the way though new cars wtih very few kms on them get damaged no matter how careful you try to be

From a driver with 30 years experience within the first month of owning the 86.

I'm sure there will be a few getting around in Aus that low that haven't been stacked.

Hey just thought I would clear things up about the Blue one since I was in the accident.. It was not hit at 90kph it was hit at around 60-65kph. The damage looks worse on photos but both cars were written off due to the chassis being bent. All doors were able to be opened and closed but the boot was crumpled and not able to be shut.

Here is a better photo of the accident26944

i had dreams of a proper toyota inline engine

i thought a lightly souped aurion v6 would actually suit it well - but then its like a 350z (not exactly a bad thing) but not like an 86

i guess the FA does everything it needs to for the right price - BUT - its not what in my mind....in a 'perfect' 86

and a grunty 2.0l isnt enough these days and people dont like to rev their engines

bit sad really

You know I am probably wrong --- but I am old and fat and can still remember when a 3K with twin webbers was considered a preformance engine ( shit I must be old ?). But every time I have driven a FT86 ---- Well its NICE ? but just not quite there ! Bit like 1JZ Soarer auto V a 1JZ Soarer R154 manual . SAME --- SAME but NOT the same at all . The 86 is a model like corolla and Camry that will continue on. They say the next 86 will be developed on the same platform but with a inline 4. That will be the car to buy and keep.

The existing 86's are still plenty fast enough for allot of p-platers to write off.. I'm waiting for the wreckers after a shell has been picked clean to give me a call.

I am getting concerned for my safety!! Before one of these people who clearly cannot drive do something stupid and kill someone sitting in a bus stop shelter, can I recommend they all do some driver training to reduce the chances.

Or join a sporting car club and test there non existant skills in a controlled environment. www.sscc.org.au (http://www.sscc.org.au)

ae8zn6
2nd August 2014, 07:32 PM
I suppose when you think about it though: A top spec Corolla hatch costs almost exactly the same money as the GT...

So people who would have normally just gotten a corolla, are buying these...

And the kind of people who normally buy a corolla from the showroom floor are probably not normally all that interested in cars and/or performance driving. They would just look at the two cars in the showroom side by side and take the 86 because it looks cooler and doesn't say corolla on the back.

If the cars in those photos were corollas we wouldn't be batting an eyelid, so I's say that is where a lot of this is coming from.

Having said that people who can't drive should probably just leave the driver assists on and they would likely find themselves in a lot less trouble :S

They really should include an optional driver training day like AMG, FPV etc do when they sell these. Seems like they would reduce this happening a fair amount of people actually had some idea of what not to do.

There certainly seem to be a lot of them being written off or damaged, as someone said its in the hundreds as to the number of cars damaged each day on our roads & i wonder if the percentage is higher for these cars ??

I think a lot of cars get written off when the air bags get deployed because when the air bags go off they can do structual damage to the car too due to the ineritia /energy as the air bags deploy, i heard if just the steering wheel ones go off you have to change the steering column out too & brackets etc & if the dash ones go off obviously the dash has to be replaced etc ..

drift kid
7th November 2014, 02:23 PM
Yeah whole column assembly as it has a crumple zone in it and the air bag can affect it's structure, probably highly unlikely but insurance companies and repairers don't like to take risks

Wanted to share my personal crash here.
Been driving on a highway about 100 km/h with my girlfriend when the rain began. There was a Toyota Land Cruiser driving in front of me and I decided to slow down a bit to give myself more space and less rain on my windshield. The second I began to slow down - the car's front right wheel fell in the puddle (which of course, shouldn't be on a closed paid highway) and the car went to the right, smashing the barrier and thrown back in the middle of the road. I was able to correct the car a little, otherwise the hit would be in the back of the car, which is not too safe I suppose.
Luckily, nobody was hurt(not even a minor scratch or shock),the car didn't roll over and didn't smash any other cars during the crash. It felt like nothing has happened at all.
I'm thinking of selling this one "as is",cause driving a repaired car after accident like this doesn't seem to me like a great idea. The car is only 20 000 kilometers old.

This is the damage in detail and all it's glory. 3 airbags on the front were used.
The car starts and even drives(altough, front right wheel is dead)
