Originally I contacted the seller as I wanted to have a look at it, but got caught up with work and ended up letting it go. The auction finished and the buyer didn't contact the seller so a week later I got the call asking if i was still interested in it.

A quick chat to the guy, and I was there with my brother to bring it home the following weekend. The family i bought it off must think cressidas are the only cars you are allowed to buy because the 2 of the kids had them, the old man had 2 and the wife also had one.

I took it down for a blueslip a couple of weeks ago with the 7m in it and it was failed due to an exhaust and oil leak , which turned out to be a missing gasket after the headers and the sump plug washer was worn out. So I dumped the oil into a clean container, replaced the sump plug washer and put it back in again.

I have the blueslip and rego now sorted.

I bought a jzs171 engine thinking it was a jzx100 without really looking into it too much...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/4/9/400836.jpg

But I think aside from the etcs-i sensors breaking, I think this engine will be an easier install than the jzx100 as all the throttle body stuff is integrated into the ecu. If i get speed sensors , there is no real reason why i can't wire in the traction control as well.

I've managed to find the JZS171 ecu pinouts... They are the same as the jzx110.

The 7m was removed over the weekend.

It definately has a blown headgasket.

or a closer look. Yep that is the tip of the spark plug sticking out of the chocolate milkshake.

Though the oil out of the sump, whilst black was normal and the coolant was normal. I haven't managed to get the cam covers off yet, as a bead of what looks like toyota sump sealant has been run around it and the dizzy had the same.

I'll probably pull it down to assist with easy disposal, but if anyone wants the 7m sing out.

I also managed to source an LSD diff as well and I spent about an hour last night tracing the loom and i'm happy to the point where i'll be able to start the car now once the 1j goes in. Just those fiddly things like dash warning / automatic gear selected lights etc are left to nut out.

I need to have this running by the middle of October so i can confidently take it up to the Raleigh weekend. It shouldn't have any issues towing an ae71

Minor update, spent most of the day tracing out the loom of the jzs171 and am very confident that when i drop it in it should start.

Also spent a couple of hours degreasing / washing down the engine bay to make it look that smidge better.

Why make it a tow car?! I'll swap you my Ford Ute when it's done and you will have a tow car and I'll have me a cool drufter :P

Timing belt / water pump done.. Engine is now ready to go into the bay next weekend....

1jz are a prick of a belt to do and the water pump is pretty hard to get at.

epic! im about 3/4 the way through a VVTi 1j swap into my MX83, mines JZX100 version though. Been a bit of a headache to date but nothing too major, biggest bummer is not having all of the bolt in bits that a JZX81 halfcut would have, like power steering setup etc

Matt

Pirtek can make up a hose to suit mx83 rack, and 1jz pump. I'm getting mine made next week so if you want a second one done let me know.

If you need the ecu plugs I also have jzx100 ones as that was what I thought I was buying.

i ended up getting my hands on a jzx81 HP line and hard return section that goes back under the engine, just had custom end put on to match rack, all up including return pipes etc the power steering owes me a whisker over $300... spewing.. and hopefully i can get away with not modding the pump side cos jzx81 has flare type fitting not banjo like the jzx100 pump. Im gunna see if it runs fine without the idle up sensor in the stock jzx100 line.

By plugs do you mean you have plugs to match ecu? i got some body loom plugs with tails that came with my gear so should be sweet.

Looking good man!
Picked up an mx83 myself about a month ago and just finished manual conversion on the weekend.
Will definatly be following this :thumbup:

Any update on this thing?

Matt
14th October 2012, 11:26 PM
Not really, other than I've made the wiring loom for it, quite a bit had to be modified inside the cabin, so it isn't quite a plug / play loom to swap into another mx83.

A couple of things that made me think where...

* Oil pressure Switch / Alternator charge light is now an ecu pin
* no temp gauge for the dash provisioned ( added a bit in the radiator hose with the original 7m sender)
* Neutral start switch (inhibitor) earths instead of the traditional 12v in / 12v out, had to swap the starter relay to be triggered off earth...
* Multiplex network stuff is annoying, but can be ignored.
* Speedo pin on the ecu is an output pin
* 5v relay had to be made for the fuel pump control instead of traditional earth the FOC
* Mrelay pin on the ecu
- Accessory power into the ecu, mrelay out from it, and from the main relay B+ is provided back to the ecu.
* ECTS-I - Throttle body needs constant power

It would have been in yesterday, but i ordered the wrong mounts... Have them coming from qld now and should have them by Wednesday.

The To Do list is

* Install engine
* Cooler piping
* Exhaust
* Tailshaft
* Power steering hoses
* Get gooseneck for tow bar*
* Skids at raleigh *
* Swap new rims *

This post is more for my own reference than anyone else, but thanks for asking...

this wiring is making my head hurt!

can't you just connect the "make load noises" wire and do skids?

Very minor update...

Yep thats right paddle shifter off a subaru legacy... If it is going to be stay auto, I may as well make it somewhat cool.

hells yeah!

By the way, I got my cressida towbar from pick n payless for $50 last time. Then I got a new gooseneck from carousel in moorebank for like $80. Somehow cheaper then buying the whole thing second hand.

Matt
20th October 2012, 09:27 PM
I've already got a tow bar, but will need a new gooseneck, so i'll hit them up during the week for one...

Not as much progress as i hoped today, due to having to remove a heap of stuff to get the mounts i got off ebay put on....

Inlet side, removed the sandwidch plate for the oil cooler and fuel / vacume pipes. Exhaust side, turbo oil drain pipe and water alternator / thermostat housing.

THe ebay mounts where not marked / drilled properly...Though a quick file and they managed to fit...

Engine is now in the bay...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/4/9/404407.jpg

Still got to get the tailshaft yoke swapped over, cooler pipes / exhaust made up. Fuel / heater hoses connected. Minor wiring inside the cabin and ecu to be connected, but its that bit closer now.

Also need my friends at pirtek to make me a high pressure power steer hose...

Found this old video from when I first started the car.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U3mTn1De7Q&feature=youtu.be

Cooler piping was done using 3" steel piping (yep i know it is heavy, but I can't weld alloy yet) and clamps / silicon from Just Jap after being stuffed around for 6 weeks by a supplier in Tassie.

Exhaust wise, it has a 3" Mild Steel system from Turbo back, a center muffler and the rear one. Sounds ok and not overly loud. I need to tuck the final bend up higher where it goes under the diff, but i'll do that once i get it on a hoist.

I ran into a few issues early on with the car starting and cutting out. After adding the DLC3 connector (ODB2 in non Toyota speak) I was able to run a diagnostic scan and grab the maf sensor code. It turned out the sensor wasn't reading air correctly and after giving it a clean + playing with the mounting position I was able to reliably start the car. If you are having issues with your own conversion, unplug the maf sensor and take the brake booster hose off and you'll find it will start and idle.

Additionally the throttle body motor is connected to the ECU and if you don't have power to it, the car will not rev and just idle.

Whats left

* Temperature Gauge, going to put a pipe in the top rad hose and tap in a sensor.
* Tacho - need to build a booster
* Shifter position wiring to the dash

Still going to go ahead with the paddle shift? Does the gearbox have 'sports shift'? I take it would being out a jzx110

Matt
24th July 2013, 05:20 PM
Yeah sure am doing the paddle shift, there are pins on the ecu that are effectively shift up and shift down, providing i earth these it'll fire the solenoids in the box.

Still an mx83 cressy, apparently the vvti 1j has. 50% more torque than the non vvti twin setup

Looks better without the front bar on her... Just a few tidy up things to go now and it'll be put into daily duties.

The brakes are a bit shit, but I'll bleed them today and see how it goes. LSD diff is also waiting to be fitted.

Matt
15th December 2013, 07:38 AM
Some other stuff prob worth mentioning that will help out others is the mount I used for the gearbox is the jzs171 with the xmember spaced about 10mm.

The holes on the mx83 member had to be widened.

The accelerator cable is also the jzs171 item. Power steer high pressure line is a custom pirtek job.

Temp sensor to the dash is installed in the top radiator hose and a new wire ran as the ecu multiplexes it to the dash cluster.

Not many of these getting around yet , but I'm sure as time goes by they'll be pretty common

Many kms on this motor?

The standard brakes on these are pretty shit, apparently R33 4-piston calipers and territory rotors is a bolt on job I'm told?

Matt
16th December 2013, 04:13 PM
45,000 on the motor. Good to know about the brake up grades, will be searching for some r33 pistons. The brakes are pretty ordinary to be honest, I have a 1 way valve in the vac line from the booster.

japlish

r33 calipers and ba-bf falcon rotors, territory ones are too big.

re-pack the lsd like a ma70 supra type (rearrange the friction discs) and it will work alot better ;)

I love how raspy the 1j sounds when having its neck wrung. Turbo spool is loud and I'm sure it'll perform well whilst towing.

Drove it to melb and it ran well, lil thirsty on the fuel but that could have been the ssvz commodore and xr6 turbo I may have gee'd up a little on the drive.

went thru a tank and a half. Was comfortable driving it and sat on 110 effortlessly

Finally got around to wiring the fuel pump properly for this car as I had been running it on constant battery power.

There is so much "bs" information out there regarding the fuel pump control relay on 1jz engines.

Short story is "YOU DO NOT NEED A 1JZ Resistor box" to run the fuel pump. The whole reason Mr Toyota installed it, was to reduce the noise coming from the fuel pump plus "preserve" the life of the pump.

So to connect it up, grab the wire from the FC pin on the ecu and take it to the "earth" wire on the open circuit relay (just like all other toyota engines 4age etc).

Pictures are much easier to follow..

Wiring Diagram...

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/4/9/524794.jpgAs in the diagram, there is 2 relays. The first relay is the traditional switch to ground at the ecu when the fuel pump is to run, and the second is the fuel pump relay. The mx83 didn't have the second "fuel pump relay" and you don't need to build this resistor box to slow down the pump as you have a fuel pressure reg in the fuel rail anyway.

Single Wire you need to connect - FC Pin on ecu to pin 11 on the body harness plug

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/5/3/4/9/524795.jpg

I found it neater to remove the fuel pump pin from the male connector that remains in the car when u take the engine loom out, and extend it directly to the ECU. This being because the signal came from the air flow meter in the 7m loom, where as now it is at the ecu.

NB: There is also a resistor in the engine bay that the fuel pump wiring goes through, if you remove the resistor you will have to short / join these 2 wires at the plug. I'll get a pic shortly.

good info right here!
cressy looks tuff in that pic, should get yourself some coilovers and some cheapo rota's and deck it!
going to bring this to the cruze at the EOM?

Yeah most likely will.

So this car has now gone to a new / better home. Whilst it was fun it's time to move onto bigger and better things.

plus you can't keep them all

Im currently doing the same swap
my motor came with the ecu and all wiring intact
so all i need to do electrically wise is speedo tacho and power the ecu
I think

What do you mean by tacho booster?
