Hi all,

Seeing as I have been around for years I thought I may as well put up a thread of my 71.

My goal is to get to as many events as possible and keep the car on the road.

I have competed recently at a hillclimb in Canberra and had a ball, next is marulan on the 21st of oct

engine is a jdm 4age bigport with jdm ecu and extractors
fuel tank is jdm 86

both supplied by just jdm

installed engine how i got it, only thing i had to do was have the injectors cleaned/rebuilt and it actually goes really well!

also bought brand new trd rear shocks and springs through streeter and running bridgestone gymkhana 4 way adj fronts (standard stroke though)

tried to remove pin in dizzy so i could rebuild it using kit from kblox

did this

so now waiting on a dizzy from NZ so i can get her running again

Looks good, something different other than drifting!

anastasios
24th September 2012, 03:36 PM
Yea its more fun imo, you are competing against the clock/other cars in your class rather than the opinion of someone

i will take it to a couple drift days though.

Cool car, u gunna do more events in Canberra? How much the trd's cost new?

for 8/6 race spring non coilover type and rear race 8 way shocks $700

anastasios

As im still waiting on dizzy....i noticed the dizzy cap is melted/charred from the exhaust and being a jdm ae86 engine does not come with a heat sheild.

So i bought a toda heat shield, fits perfectly and should offer protection to the dizzy cap

10th October 2012, 12:15 AM
What suspension do you have in the front?

anastasios
10th October 2012, 01:25 PM
TRD 8kg springs non coilover type,
standard length bridgestone potenza gymkhana kyb 4 way adj inserts in ae86 struts with JDM brakes.
stock ae71 strut tops, ke55 lca,
custom castor rod for less squirm under braking by bilstein/heasman steering

I was planning on using a TRD shock and cutting the strut to the correct length but when i bought the struts the kyb shocks were in them and the seller did not know and i thought id kill them first.

so a bit of bad news, seems like i have done a big end bearing,

now i have to go through my options

Buy second hand engine - not knowing the condition again

rebuild to original spec - get that original feel but risk ruining it again

rebuild to make a bit more power

rebuild hybrid smallport/bigport head engine

any advice?

anastasios
8th November 2012, 03:31 PM
so found out tonight it had a metal head gasket possibly trd which was broken between 3 and 4 cylinder

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/500899.jpg

honing looks good

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/500900.jpg

where its at atm

anastasios
9th November 2012, 10:07 AM
this just turned up, looks the same as the gasket i took out, which is good as i liked the power of the engine before it blew, the machinist also found that 2 of the valves wernt seated properly, so that should help with compression too

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/500963.jpg

joeschmo_57
12th November 2012, 09:52 PM
I take it rebuilding to stock?

Why not just get slights bigger cams? You rarely got below 5k in those vids, so you wouldn't be suffering overall

anastasios
15th November 2012, 09:56 AM
rebuilding with trd head gasket and a skimmed head to make flat, apparently 2 valves were leaking which was causing me to lose some compression so should be alot better, also dont have the money/time to source and fit cams, its okay there are other areas of the car that will make it more reliable before i start chasing power.

The diff needs to be rewelded and i need to source s series diff sway bar u strap thingos that bolt to housing

so just got delivered this :)

so engine is rebuilt, goes great, i sourced some sway bar brackets but now need to source bushes, diff centre is at speedy diffs being re welded and then im good to go!

trying to get it all done for HR annual

anastasios
15th December 2012, 09:40 AM
the 71 loved the HR annual, was great seeing toyotas actually driving all together, couple of mishaps but that happene when you have 20 x 20 year old cars

the roads were just epic, indescribable, 10 x better than natio

i had no issues, got my diff centre rewelded for it, and also got the correct bush brackets thanks to jo (maxhag) i had to modify the original AE71 bush to suit the smaller AE86 bracket which was a dirty sticky rubbery job

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/502650.jpg

middle of this week i have noticed my charge light coming on, ill take the alt off this week and get Golberg to rebuild it for me with new denso parts

and ive booked myself in for wet skid pan day 30th dec at EC

anastasios
7th January 2013, 09:25 AM
so went for some wet skids on 30th with driving sports, was heaps of fun! even managed to get my gf to passenger with me for a run

did an oil and coolant flush as they were due

this was filmed on my gopro black edition i got for chrissy :) on default settings, i should have filmed in 1080p rather than 1440p

4th February 2013, 10:34 AM
Another successful track day has been completed, my first of this year. Huntley Hillclimb with Wollongong Sporting Car Club.

Had an issue with my synchros so did a gearbox oil change yesterday with Penrite Pro Gear and that helped the synchros a bit which im happy about

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/7/5/504544.jpg

my fastest time was a 31.9, not fast enough to beat justin in his civic though, he got a 30.3! which is great

results are here,http://wscc.org.au/results/club/20130203.pdf im pretty happy with beating a couple of commodores and xr8s!

this was also competing

So I have decided to sell the 5K engine out of my white KE70 as most of you would have noticed

This will help fund a disc brake rear, with hopefully a 4.7 final drive and LSD

I will then put a 4K into the KE70 with my 4-1 extractors and down draught holley.

Then I will swap the shortened AE86 coilovers out of the KE70 into the AE71 and put the standard length AE86 struts into the KE70 with some stock springs

and go rallying!!! well ill go do some khanacrosses/ entry level events first

Oh and also I will be getting an AGI cams approved bolt in cage and swap it between the two cars!!!

I have a buyer for the 5K engine in SA so just prepping that for shipping

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/507709.jpg

I also got given some baller heat shielding, 22k gold! Able to be bought from MRP

used it on my dizzy heat shield due to it being approx 5mm from exhaust for cyl 1

anastasios
29th May 2013, 06:55 PM
saved up my $ and spent it on le this:

JDM AE86 Kouki Disc brake rear end. Has a better FD (will calculate when I get it home but think its 4.1), TRD LSD, bigger sway bar than my AE71 one, disc brakes instead of drums. I also got a JDM tailshaft to suit the diff too

so party time. back to racing and drifting. cant wait to dust off the go pro again too

need to sell a set of onis now to fund some new discs and pads

cool thread

that road looks hard on brakes - what car did you do it in? Where is it exactly? There is a similar one in italy

Glad someone else on here took the 86 around the ring, how good is it? Did the one you drove have a cage etc?

im keen to go to the toyota museum in japan after seeing your pics!

Furka Pass in Swiss Alps in Switzerland was done in Peugot Turbo diesel, When i was on it 5 supercars blurted past me at stupid speeds, insane.

86 round ring is probably best thing i have done in my life. I did it in this car, yep had cage, semis, suspension and i think a bit of engine work.
It was such a rush, scary, nerve wrecking. The people on the public day are mental, 5 cars written off in the half day i was there.

Japan was amazing, such a culture shock. We worry about all these JDM cars but really its such a small minority over there. They love kei cars and cubes etc.

I reckon i could live in the library of Toyota Automobile Museum

haha yeah, we drove a stock 86 with neovas and trd brake pads, was awesome, i went back again this year but the track was closed so I went to watch the WRC instead

the 86 is a truly good car

we saw a motorbike slide out hit the railing and catch on fire in a big way and some locals in a turbo 3 series undertaking (against the rules) and lighting the tyres up in the process

good times

did you leave traction control on when you went around?

haha no way, a car with such a chassis it would be too intrusive

got it to slide past the photographers on the left right switch back

was good fun - wasnt thinking about the 10,000 euro damage insurance haha

had some awesome battles as well

Finally got the corolla out to wakefield yesterday for a Trackschool day, had a blast!

Have alot to learn on the line and need to change my front suspension setup

my PB of the day was 1:18.1, for comparison the red honda civic with B16 got 1:17.9 and the white mx5 got 1:17.1

so happy about my time for first timer at wakeys!

TRD AE86 Racing shock 5 way adjustable made by Tokico

Spent some more time this weekend preparing for track day this sunday

Tidied up my lower radiator hose by shortening the straight part going into the engine to reduce the kink in the bend. You cannot use an AE86 hose due to the AE71 radiator being narrower so a custom setup need to be used.

I also finished the brackets and hoses for my oil cooler setup

And installed my water temp sensor adapter into the upper radiator hose

I also tidied up the broken Toda dizzy heat shield (do not buy) and ziptied it strongly back into place. This is necessary to protect the electricals from being melted by the headers. I have also used gold heat shielding on the aluminium shield for further protection

Next to do is finalise the wiring for the VDO gauge setup i will now be using, get rego, then hit the track on sunday!

Just realised I have never uploaded an engine bay shot, I am in the process of changing the heat shielding on the firewall to the gold stuff, so should look alot better and I want to get an oem intake pipe to better clear the top radiator hose

Swap the silicone joiners to black and a nicer inlet pipe and will tidy it all up heaps, car is really cool though man ^_^

I wouldn't bother with the factory intake pipe, they aren't the greatest for airflow because of the corrugations and multiple bends. I would use a tight radius mandrel bend with a short joiner to the throttle body.

so had a great day at marulan yesterday, was 0.01 faster than my friend George in his 86 which has bilstein suspension and AD08s

Had oil leak dramas in the morning so I got there at 12pm but still had a blast, got 4 sessions in

I run an old model AJPS adjustable panhard rod in my car which allows me to re centre the diff once the car is lowered.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/7/5/543650.jpg

His new model is lighter, has a different turnbuckle and includes a better diff side bush (something to buy later!)

Dave from AJPS sells the bush upgrade separate which still fits my older model bar.

As you can see below the bar I had on the car had a normal cotton reel type poly bush.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/7/5/543651.jpg

The new bush type includes a crush tube, this means that there will be less wear, dilation and flex on the limit.

So pulled out the bar, cut out the old poly bush with a hacksaw and installed the new bush and crush tube

I have been using second hand rusted mild steel 4-1 headers bought from japan which are probably 20 years old. They cracked at the collector one track day, my swaybar/diff hits the exhaust on full extension and I have no flex in the exhaust. I had the crack welded up but again the collector cracked due to age/my shitty driveway.

So i bit the bullet Power Craft 4-1 N2 spec brand new ordered through Garage 88

Cant wait to go home and get them on

There was a bit of a delay with getting these on as I lost my only car key!

Managed to get in and get 2 keys made up.

I was happy with the design of the old headers, although being mild steel they were rusty and probably 20 years old.

One issue with these headers was that once I installed my oil cooler sandwich plate my large TRD oil filter did not fit, this meant I had to use an OEM small type filter

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/7/5/543656.jpg

Pulled the old extractors off and the damage was very bad and not worth repairing a second time, the metal has cracked right next to the repair done during a track day at wakefield

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/7/5/543657.jpg

Comparison of the old header vs the Power-Craft 4-1 N2 with double slip joints,

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/2/7/5/543658.jpg

They provide more than enough clearance for my TRD large oil filter as well. I did have to angle grind a bracket off the strut tower to install these, i dont the the ae86 has that bracket, my KE70 didnt

Shes not the most beautiful thing, but the engine starts 1st time every time, and there is still alot more things to be done!

Have you noticed a difference with the new headers?

Those headers would be worth more than the engine lol

Not really, havent taken it back to the track yet. but i didnt buy these for performance gains, my old ones were cracked beyond reasonable repair, these also allow me to use my trd oil filter as mentioned above

Which pipe size for the primaries did you go for out of the two they offer? Also what sort of compression and cams are you running?

I believe they are the 42.7mm off their website

head has been recod, made flat and running a trd head gasket, still using stock cams
