Picked up a AE71 wagon today to be the new parts/tyres transporter and camper/fishing vehicle. I've been looking for a while for a Panel van or wagon for the right price, and got this one today.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/1/1/402365.jpg

The car has very little rust (surface only really), few small dents, 4AC, runs, but blows oil smoke. It is a manunal 5 speed (T50). Car has 590,000kms!

It shouldn't take too long to get it up to scratch. I will be fitting a 4AGTE motor, simple bolt in job (from my crashed gold AE86), wheels, and the body will stay haggard....

It gets delivered in 2 weeks....

At first, I was thinking the rear bumper had to go, as its massive and hideous, but then realized that since its a work/support vehicle, I can use it as a mobile work bench. I can attach a mini vice to it. :P :P :P

how much of goldys suspension will go into it?

maxhag
30th September 2012, 11:24 PM
^^ none really. It would be silly to put GReddy coilovers in a beater wagon :P :P

Will get the rear leafs reset, and most likely just run AE86 front struts with shocks and springs....

that makes sense. a daily should after all be a little bit comfortable

maxhag
9th October 2012, 01:14 AM
The GReddys were "comfortable" in my AE86.... Greatly developed product......

It will be a daily, but more to carry tyres, tools, dogs and spare parts (I go thru 2 pairs a week in the drift car just casually driving), so I am always carrying tyres around getting them fitted, taking dogs to park (2 pitbulls), picking up parts etc etc etc....
It will have enough power and the suspension will still be decent enough. The car will be capable of basic track work, it being the "spare" drift car in emergencys.......

Well, the wagon finally arrived last friday night. So good to finally get it, as I had been thinking about it alot. Itching to sink my teeth into it.....

The wags is all original, and has not been modded by previous owners. It saying that, it has done over 586,000kms, so it shows signs of that.... Everything works, T50 seems ok, tailights look almost new (came with a faded set too, so had been swapped by someone). The 4AC engine blows a fuckload of oil smoke when it warms up. But it's being replaced by a 4AGTE this week :)
The body is perfect for what I was after. A beater wagon, something that goes well, but looks haggard :P It has dents, SURFACE rust, white paint marks etc.... just perfect!
First thing I did, was try all my differant wheels to see which ones I will use.
Over the weekend I -
Stripped out the back seats and seatbelts
Removed rear bumper
Removed sound deadning in the back
Cleaned and vac inside
Fitted Luisi wheel and Boss
Lip'd and flared front and rear guards (hammers haha)
Changed the smallest/stiffest rear leaf from bottom to top (slightly lower and stiffer)
Painted everything inline with the window pillars black. ie; door window frames, bit between the doors, rear plastic cover etc...... (sort of subtle two tone effect)
Prepared the gold AE86 for engine removal

I am pulling the 4AGTE and W58 out of the gold AE86 today, perfect 150kw running motor..... I need to get another turbo manifold for it tho, as I used the one it had on my other BLUE AE86 build....
I should have the motor in by wednesday this week.....

Also going to fit the awesome big brake setup out of the 86. It's the Hopper Stopper kit (290mm XR8 discs, custom hubs, huge PBR calipers, R32 master cyl, braided lines etc.....) I will be using the wags to tow my boat too, so the brakes are def needed in this...

With the fuel system, I will just rig up something from all the parts I have around. I am thinking to use a VL lift pump, and a BOSCH 910 main pump, and a surge tank.

I am getting the rear leaves reset and leaf added in the next few weeks..... Height is stupid high at the moment...
I also have a big roll of 5% window tint. Never done it myself before, but I am going to take the rear windows out and give it a go.

Off the top of my head, to complete this, I need to get:
Either AE86 shocks and AJPS springs or get get some cheap coilovers if they come up for sale in the next few weeks
High mount T25 turbo manifold
Fluids
Some intercooler piping
New alluminium radiator

There is always a few extra things, but overall, its fuck all

Just a few more pics of progress.....

Engine is done now has all the turbo gear installed, (only thing to do is the turbo Water lines, but I need a AE71 heater core first as it's leaking inside the cab.)
Dump pipe fitted,
All new fasteners/bolts etc for turbo setup (replaced all old nuts and bolts with new quality ones)
completly wired up,
Custom fitted Golpher Alluminium AE86 Radiator with twin 10" fans,
Autometer Tacho, boost guage and Microtech hand controller fitted,
Re-located battery to behind passenger seat,
I've bought some SSCUS recliner buckets and modified rails to suit....

Ok, so done a bit more on this in the last few days.......

Oil cooler setup all done.....

Fuel system is done now.
Consists of - modified tank drain plug into a bottom feed outlet, Pierburg Extenal lift pump, surge tank, Bosch 910 main pump. I had to mount it in the back of the wagon, but it is off to the side and I am gonna make up a cover for it.....

Car is 100% wired up....

Front brakes and coilovers are in. R32 master cyl fitted with modified lines..... I have ended up using the G'Reddy coilovers anyway, As I dont want to pull the blue 86 apart anymore to rape parts off it....

Change of plans Paul, No way I can have the car ready in time this week.... No Spirited driving for me....... :(
I totally forgot about tuning (engine now has bigger turbo GT28R), so that throws me way out. I still need an intercooler, and get the exhaust I have modified slightly....... I really cant afford it this week :(
Instead, I am going to go drifting at Wakefield on Saturday in the SR86.... I got 14 tyres ready to smoke :P :P

maxhag
14th November 2012, 12:46 AM
Even once the wags is running and registered, sadly there will be no Spirited Drives in it yet, because of the diff..... I really cant see it liking any power/torque through it.... I will be doing something about it, but for the mean time, I just need a running daily (current VS Statesman is just about fucked).....

maxhag
17th November 2012, 08:17 PM
Ok. Really getting excited now.... Stuff all left to do..... Just money really holding me up, as maintaining and building my cars are sending me broke.... :(

Anyway, Got to the point of turning the key this afternoon!!!!!!!! Well, not all the way to start it (no engine oil or intercooler), but to test if everything electrical is working etc...... As expected, everything powered up perfect, first time :) :) Dash, Microtech hand controller, fuel pumps.......

It is sitting nice at the front now with the GReddy coilovers. I just need to sort out the height at the back,,,

I have a chrome bumper, but didn't really like the look of it. So I deceided to make my own front, still keeping the spirit of the beater theme of the car. After trying differant bars and lips from the "pile" up the back, I found a combination that will give the front a "better, rougher" look... :P :P :P

I ended up using a stock ADM AE86 front bar, cut horizontal in half at the bottom. I then used a MX73 front lip on the bottm to finish it off..... I still have to fit an intercooler, and I will leave that visible, with some sort of black mesh and some indicators on the sides to fill the final gaps....

It is really close to running and driving. Still a bit to do to make the car "finished" in the styling department :P

To Do:

- Buy and mount a intercooler and piping etc,
- make a bracket for the HKS turbo actuator,
- Engine oil, gearbox oil
- Weld flanges to exhaust
- Fit bucket seats
- Reset rear leaves

Can't remember - but are you running a front bumper?

maxhag
17th November 2012, 11:30 PM
Thanks Joel. Doing this wagon, while doing everything that goes with the SR86, full time job (night shift), Drift fest, etc etc etc, you can imagine I am pretty busy... My life aint cheap, but cars I love, and cars I shall do... pretty happy with the timeframe so far, and it is all done well, not just slapped together with wires and shit everywhere.
I am going to have to get some sort of diff for the wagon, the stock Borgwonka surely wont like 170kw+, and would give up it's spirit..... hahhaha...... I would guess a Hilux leaf diff would be the way to go, but I still need to research which model hilux has the good LSD diffs etc....

No bumper. With the empty space above my homemade lip, it will have the intercooler in there, which will be left visible, and the the gaps to the sides will have some black mesh with indicators mounted in the mesh.....
Having no front bumper, removes the 'pointyness' of the slant front I reckon....

As my SR86 is now out of action for a while, I have made it my mission to have the wagon (Charlie) all done by the HR annual next weekend. The wagon is my only option... Will be the longest test drive I have ever done :P

Much thanks to Paul who came around today and did some welding for me. He welded a Dash 10 turbo oil return fitting to the sump, as my screw in fitting was leaking... He also made my exhaust :) Straight thru, with hotdog and stainless blast pipes :P Holy shit! This will scare spirits away! This is going to be my daily!

Been doing all the small things, seats fitted to rails, lowered the rear, fitted indicators to front , also, when I changed the diff oil and only 500ml came out... haha Looked old, but nice and clean, zero metal filings on the magnetic plug....

All thats left to do is - Rego, Wheel alignment, tuning, boost controller and speakers for the stezza.... Then it "should" be a driveble car.......

Nice work Joe :) I've picked up an AE71 wagon in totally opposite condition to yours. "Overrated" paint job and shitter of a driveline haha. Props on the quick work. I hope you can enjoy the engine more than you did in the Gold 86.

I see you're gonna meet up with the Sydney 86 guys on the HR cruise. I'm keen to trek from Berra to the Bay and then join the rest of the club. I might jump in with your schedule, though mate. Where will you meet up with them? (please don't say Liverpool)

Jezz !!!! Jo Jo you are an animal , when I am a bit better we must make those rear flares look like they where meant to fit a van. Congrats on getting her on the road , top effort when all things are considered.

maxhag
6th December 2012, 02:26 PM
Thanks Bob.... YThey look much better than my hammerjob, and clears the wheels, so it's better...... What makes you think they are not suited for a van? :P

I do need to do some "sealing" tho..... To give you some idea, while driving yesterday, I had a stone fly around the cab and land on the passenger seat.... (come in thru the wheel arch hahaha) Plan is to either seal it off, or just drive with a stackhat on......

I hope you are well soon mate.....

AIROCOBRA

The big hole at the front of the flare is a bit of a give away .

Just did a quick comparison to my graph from the other week and it looks like yours is making the same or more power everywhere and doesn't seem to be any difference on how fast it is coming onto boost. At least the power that it is making at around 100km/h is around the same as mine. Debating weather to take mine back down for more boost to see what it does or to rebuild the little turbo and see how that goes when we screw some boost into it. Very interesting to be able to put the cars on the same dyno so close together and see the different results.

maxhag
7th December 2012, 09:54 PM
Boost is coming on noticably later with this turbo......... Has heaps more legs tho...

I wouldn't push that old little turbo too hard Paul..... Be happy with what you have. Thats good power from a T25G... Cant really expect any more from it.
I would get the rear sorted, and just drive the thing.....

nelpd96|
7th December 2012, 10:05 PM
Really, at 100km/h it is making around 100kw which is about the same as the T28 that is on mine and pretty close at around 140kw at 120km/h. It is after that that mine starts to flatten off. Maybe it just feels like it is coming on late because it pulls so nice in the top end????

maxhag
7th December 2012, 10:18 PM
not much happens untill 4000rpm

Yours is a T25G, not a T28...

In simple, I took the wagon on the HR annual cruise on the weekend....... Yesterday, It was in a major accident with a Landcruiser with a 4x4 caravan.......
The landcruiser caravan rolled over twice and destroyed, while the wagon didn't shand a chance against 3.8 tonnes, and is totalled......

Ned to get an X-ray STAT! I thnk I have a fracture in my arm..... Very sore all over, feel like I've been bashed.....

Fault is disputed....

Copper blamed me tho and gave me a NEG driving charge...... I intend to fight the charge.
The massive rig was in the centre of the road on a blind corner. I had nowhere to go.........
I was not over the speed limit and the police agree with that, but too fast for the "recommended speed"......... Some bullshit....

Matt
10th December 2012, 08:46 PM
I've spent a good hour or so looking at those skid marks from diff angles and diff pics.... Sure the skid marks stop on the wrong side of the road, but if you look at the damage, the caravan rolled up over the bonnet of the car. This means the momentum of the wagon didn't stop dead at the impact zone, hence why the skid marks continued onto the wrong side of the road.

Either way jojo glad you're ok, and let us know as a community if there is anything we can help you out with...

yeah only reason I asked was because - caravan and 4wd (cop sees them as sensible and trustworthy)

younger guy in a modified and old turbo car, on a car cruise (cop sees as hooning, showing off etc)

Best of luck with it,

what did the guy in the caravan say about it?

Gutting to see man, but your alive, that's the main thing.
If the speed limit on the road is say 80km/hr... And there are not speed advisory signs for that particular corner, then as the driver you can assume that is it safe to take the corner at the nominated speed limit.
If there was an advisory sign, it is just that, a mere guide at which speed to use.
So I think what the cop said about your speed is just reasoning with no backing.
If you were in the right, make sure your fight this

Thanks guys.....

Had an X-ray today. Cleared of fracture but have bone bruising........ Was very sore this morning, but feeling better tonight......
It's really starting to sink in of all my hard work and money I put into getting this car ready for this weekend....... It makes the last month of my life seem quite surreal.... To spend every minute, of everyday I am not at work or sleeping, working on the car, buying parts, immersing myself in a focus that controlled me, all to have it taken away in a second......... Last friday, my hands were literally so sore and worn out from continiously working to get the car done last week.

With my bad luck of my other two fucked cars this year, shit is taking it's fucking toll....

That road looks like a very nice long drive, winding roads next 65kms! Sounds good!

The roads down there are great for quite Sunday drives in our prides and joys, but the hazards on the road are almost deadly as I found out the hard way....

Thought I might say, that looking at the car now, it looks like the strut brace played a big part in saving the strut tower hitting the firewall/cabin..... Great value for the $50 I paid for it :P

so wats salvageable on it max?? didnt get much of a look on the day

Main things of value that I am worried about is the GReddy coilover (which I never really wanted to put in anyway), and my big brake kit ($1200 kit (custom hubs etc....)..... The rest (intercooler, radiator, fans etc....) are not big dollar items on the scale of things.....
Cant see yet if the front has been pushed into the crank/pulley, but it looks like the engine might be ok. Top cam cover plastic is squashed, so not sure if the timing belt survived....
The only oil that leaked was from the oil cooler lines, and that was all after the engine had stopped. (engine stopped instantly)

Not sure if the ECU (Microtech LT10s) survived. The POSITIVE + terminal in the engine bay (battery mounted behind passenger), is pushed up hard against an earth in the engine bay.... Hopefully the fuses saved it...

The Good:

I lived, with all limbs.......
The turbo setup survived. Manifold (steam pipe), Garrett GT28R, dump etc are all fine......

Also, I have inspected the GReddy coilover and it looks fine... Everything around the coilover bent but not the coilover :) These GReddys are tough as! This coilover has survived 2 massive front on hit accidents, in a AE86 and this AE71 acco.

Brakes and custom hub all fine too :)

16th January 2013, 01:05 AM
Ok, so I took the top cam cover off to find this -

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/1/1/503716.jpg

Now, I have checked all the timing marks and they all still line up correctly. So nothing skipped teeth.... Thats a positive sign...
The engine turn over by hand, just as it should....

As far as the engine, I will obviously change the pulleys and get a fresh timing belt. The TPS plug on the loom copped a whack too, so I need a new TPS plug, which I dont have........ Anyone got one they can send me.... Toyota dont sell individual plugs....

Suprisingly, the intercooler seems to have come off best. not really a mark on it! ???? Everything else at the front is scrap metal.....

...The TPS plug on the loom copped a whack too, so I need a new TPS plug, which I dont have...

I know it is not ideal, but if it came to it, you can use tiny female spade terminals on the end of the loom to connect to the TPS. My 4AGTE was wired like that when I first got it and it did work fine. I just swapped them for a propper plug as I had a spare loom here.

early exels and protons use the same tps/plug as early zenki looms with a metal press clip, later kouki use a plastic press on type fitting, which do you have?
