So I'm after a set of wheels but before I buy some really wide wheels I wanna know how wide can you go befor you wheels will rub the inner guide line ( metal behind the plastic ) I love my car and don't wanna bend/smash the metal body work and is there a way to get around the problem or can tell me the maximum size that I can run them

Thanks

depending on how low you go I guess.

My 14x8 -14 needed the rear lips rolled flat so that they wouldn't rub on the tires enough though the tires were very stretched as well and slightly lowered. Front 14x7 -4 is still standard height and they only rub on full lock and that's on the plastic inner guard.

what sort of wheels/sizes where you looking at getting ?

Maybe 14x8, 14x8.5, 15x8, 15x8.5 front 14x8.5 14x9, 15x8.5, 15x9 on the back

Useless information without defining the recommended offset. Offset is the key as to how well your wheels will fit.
15x8 -15 offset have lip protruding about 5 mm on the rear of an ae86 with 195 x 50. Slightly rubbing guards over larger bumps with 4.5kg rear springs and trd green shocks on number 5

alot of 86's back in the day would run te37's and they were 14x7+/-0
imo you could run 14 or 15 by 7,7.5,8 and maybe even 8.5 all with a zero a small negative offset and a 195/50/15 or similar 14 inch tyre.

there is alot of info out there on what fits you will just need to google it.

I wouldnt go anything bigger then 15 in size and 8 in width with - 0 offset on stockish suspension on stock guards. Anything more "hecktick" will require guard modification, to how much depends on your wheels.

ran XR4 15x7 +11 front and 15x7+3 rear w/ 195/50r15 and scrubbed with llovel superlow springs, front had around 10-15mm clearance from the tyre to the guard (which has the lip rolled).
tried to run stiffer shocks/springs 8/6 and thicker swaybars but the car was way to stiff to maintain such height for daily driving
also the front was hitting the side of the chassie rail and firewall on the front with stock lca/control arms

if you plan on keeping stock height then you might as well run 35x11.5 15's muddies on black sunnies

whatever you choose to do please dont buy wide wheels and keep the car high. no amounts of awesomely wide wheels can make 4wd ride height look cool. in all honesty if it is street driven buy a set of te37's in 14x7 +/-0 like i said before and lower the car so it sits nice. with these wheels you can still remain legal and look cool

I'm planing to buy coil overs once I am coming back to Vic but I need to plan a head so I won't have any set backs once I've got all the parts Together and take the call off the road for a bit

Ok cool how much does Te37?

second hand can be had for 1600-2400 depending on tyres and condition of the rim. they do not pop up often however they do hold their value

you shouldn't need to touch the fold with some castor and ideally <8j wheel

as Johl said I would run 14x7 +0 on a street car. Mk3/Watanabe/XR-4 all easy to find in this size too!

<< 14x7 watas with no issues, 195/60 on the rears. if i was any lower they would touch the inner lip on my stock rear non rolled guards

I would stick with something around 8" wide at most and around 0 offset, with a bit of castor my car just barely rubs the plastic inner guard over the seam you're talking about hammering and if you go to crazy on the offset and width it'll make the car handle worse anyway. Also means you don't have to do much to the guards at all.
