View Full Version : The 'Smashed-up Drift Car' thread

svenmate
17th June 2009, 12:00 AM
There's just something about these cars that amaze me - that the driver is truly pushing him/herself to the very limit and wont let the appearance of the car get in the way of maximum fun or trying to get as close to the wall as possible.

Ive developed this obsession for japanese drift cars that are falling apart, rusted up, held together by blu-tac and receive no mercy by the madmen that drive them. Such popularity of this design scheme has increased recently with the exposure of drift festival events at Ebisu (matsuri).

This thread is dedicated to all discussion and media topics.

Let me begin.

i like the guys that get close without fucking their cars up too bad. With these guys its not so much like the missle car dudes, but more so people that cant afford to repair their car or get a new one right away. I do appreciate them for staying out there and stuff, but you gotta have a little pride, your cars like a gf, gotta wine and dine them, keep em happy, just gotta treat em mean now and then to keep em keen. Not rape the crap out of them and throw them in the gutter, to me cars are more than just parts and random shaped pieces of steel.

its the way they're driven thats appeling to me the things they can do in these cars others cant in there 15k cars because deep down they cant atempt the mentle shit coz in the back of there mind theres that possability they could lose alot

These cars are cool in a way, but end of the day, I can't say I actually like the style.
Much prefer cars that are slightly on the rough side, but still have some presentation to it, these are just fucked, it's like saying rally bashers that you pick up super cheap here in Australia is cool.

Sure you can keep drifting without worrying, but I'd imagine most of these rigs aren't driving straight.

Konakid

...and your streeter is with the bent rail :P

its cool to a point, you can get super close to each other, not really much skill in smashing walls though.

From the videos ive seen these guys have plenty of skill, the damage comes from very minor mistakes because they are just pushing the drift envelope further than anyone ever has which in my eyes can only be a good thing.

It's not bent, it's been straightened, just slightly crumped but still straight. Still far from a missile, like that 180SX which doesn't even have a rear anymore, it just gets ridiculous.

Like said by some, if it wasn't in Japan you'd neg the shit out of it and the owner. There's barely anything cool about a car beaten up to that point, the Chasers that Daigo, Fukuda and a few others own are considered missiles, the body has some damage here and there, but by general standards, still a 'car'.

The white 180SX by no means, is doing anything spectacular, the wow factor comes from the fact that he just smashes a few walls and keeps going, which a usual drift car probably wouldn't. The whole thing besides the novelty of completely fucked up, is a joke.

Also, the no-hatch rustopia AE86, going ONLY on the video that was posted with on 7tune, again, nothing special, any other AE86 driver in Japan would be doing that or even better. Not sure where the "he is pushing the envelope further in drifting" is just because it's a shit heap.

I still like watching this shit, and I guess I am ranting a bit, but I'm just confused how people are delusioned by pieces of junk doing the same as cars that actually look nice(r).

It's allll about wall slapping :)! and it's not just smashing into the wall, it's about how close you can get while still in control of your drift... And i think the way these guys think of it is.. If it spins 2.. susp is stiff and motor is good They couldn't care about the looks of the car.. because they know, theres no point in smashing up 1 car, buying another, smashing that up etc.. probably seems like a waste of money to them? And also, i think everyone knows if your going to drift.. your usually going to break shit... And also... i thought this was an appreciation thread to those who drive these cars.. not a rant thread about how bad people think they are.. My personal opinon is i give these guys 2 thumbs up!!:thumbup:

can someone tell me why trashing your cars into walls is cool? ...or do i completely miss the picture? Yes, props to them for not giving two-shits when they drive, great. But, honestly... smashing your car into a wall for the hell of it?

It's not like you can say that they cannot afford to fix it... they're simply ruining their car with no reason at all...

you gotta remember that most of the dudes that own those real fucked up ones also have there clean(ish) drift cars, its just cheap fun for them espec for things like drift matsuri.

people hate on me for it, but whatever, i love a good banged up, battle scarred car, cause to me drifting should be about the fun, not impressing others by how shiny your shit is. if you're too busy trying to impress others, you lose sight of enjoying yourself, and that usually means dropping a rear wheel in the dirt or entering too fast and getting into the mud or some shit, you know, pushing yourself

i've seen too many people get emo about scratching their shit, just makes me feel that much better about not giving a shit.

this car is kinda cool, apart from the front end

yeah but man there is a difference between having fun and outright ploughing your car against a gaurd rail 'for the hell of it'... I agree with what your saying, but simply driving your car into walls is almost retarded. getting your car covered in mud becuase your trying something new/having fun is one thing... but charging concrete walls?

Actually I would love to see something like this in circuit racing. Wonder if it's cool anymore in that scenario.

driftke70
17th June 2009, 01:27 PM
i think the ones that are slightly damaged are cool, the people that dont give a fuck like streeter sorta, but anything beyond that is just signs the driver is less skilled or his car isnt as well prepped so more room for error. I agree with seek and kabiceee, its all about the fun, but having a car thats so bent you cant steer the thing properly wouldnt be much fun to me, and the whole idea of pushing yourself further and challenging yourself goes further than seeing how close you can scrape a wall, theres more speed/angle more consistency, being able to roll onto a track and first lap put down an unbelievable lap, being able to build a car thats reliable, meeting challenges within certain tracks like jumping the strip at ebisu or what ever, i know each track has a sweet little challange thats fun to master, like qr's dipper or archys first corner being able to float it in nicely.

like mentioned earlier.. these cars are for the drivers to thrash as hard as they can go without need of repair. They are usually pro D1 drivers that love to experiment with walls and tire barriers and not really care if they connect with solid objects.

ae86hachiroku
17th June 2009, 01:49 PM
I'm not talking about D1 drivers like Daigo Saito and whoever else. Their cars are still somewhat presentable as a useable vehicle.

It's the privateers like the white 180sx and whatever else that doesn't resemble a car anymore.

no, its just a consequence of pushing the envelope.

"if you wanna make an omelete, you've gotta break some eggs"

its all the essence of the driving speaks louder than the presentation of the car

^Thats what i meant, yeah.

To say that guys in their 'pretty' cars are pushing just as hard as the guys in missile cars is just not true, if they were, their cars wouldnt be 'pretty' they would be smashed to shit!

I actually dont think that any of the drivers purposely smash their cars into the walls, i would be confident in saying that it only happens because they are pushing THAT hard that one second of too much handbrake or throttle and bam, into the wall or the car infront.

Hate that car.

Build a drift car, use decent parts then as it gets thrashed it will begin to look like that.

But building a drift car that would looks like a pig even when it hasnt been thrashed by using garden edging as flares is just gay. No suprise its an american car.

benzo
17th June 2009, 05:38 PM
^+1

actually setting out to build a pig is laaaame..this is what I try to tell people, a car should become 'pig' as a result of the way it is driven, not because matte paint and broken body parts are 'cool'

lol at the 'custom' roof spoiler riveted onto the ae86 though

Parts of it are cool, most of it is tryhard cool

Anyway I can't see how these broken cars are cool, interesting to watch them. but not really cool

Stuff like Streeter's car I can appreciate, because he is an effing gun driver and doesn't give a damn if he has a few (small) scrapes. Too much more than that just gets silly, eg the white 180 with round rear end lol

ae86hachiroku
17th June 2009, 06:50 PM
Well, Streeter's car is fine, and I like it, because the original intention is for it to be nice, but has been beaten up here and there from driving and learning.
Going straight for the pig look like said is lame. Though I'm sure even the White 180SX was nice at one stage, just the owner just kept going, for gods sake just replace the shell, it's cheap enough over there. haha

Hmm.. This is getting ridiculous.. It's not an argument thread guys.. It's a thread to post up pics of Smashed up drift cars! And i honestly think in all reality that 80% of you are missing the whole point of these cars.. Ever thought of the fact that these cars are just practice cars? They all would own a nice looking respectable drift car, and then use those shitters for practicing new techniques maybe? Hence the name of the "Missile Car" they use them untill they are totally fucked or die..

as far as im aware missile cars started out from whats his name, major mental blanks right now, guy from team orange, owns ebisu, god damn it, owns the zoo...

anyhoo he used to get like na s13s and stuff and practice proximity, they had a few banged guards and doors, maybe no front bar, but they wernt that fucked, they were happy, i was impressed by their driving, and he won d1 the following year.

anyway, ill argue with pictures

lame as fuck

just reminds me of the days when hobos got into motorbikes, cut and painted their guards with paint brushes, drove around in lodeos thinking they were full sic, can just see the next phase in the gold coast, guys driving around in laurels with flat brim hats, smashed up, stockies on the back, band aids, going to the track and just knocking tyres all over the place.

here is my theory, you dont see many missile cars with sponsor stickers and pretty paint do u? thats cos i doubt sponsors would be too happy about rubbing that expensive paint and stickers off onwalls and other compeditors.
look at leigh pidwell and luke fink in vic, both drive pretty stickered up sponsored cars in comps that they dont wanna smash, but when they really wanna have some paint swapping fun they get their shitters out!

The thing is, most of the rear damage was caused by wall scraping, however im pretty sure the wall/walls sit below the line of the boot, hence why the boot is no where near as damaged.

when youve got a useless taxi driver fuck, running around with massive power and nil skill taking out anything slightly boxy because he is retarded the hate is most definatly warranted!

maybe he has a secret dislike for older jap cars. Streetforced/ SRNRG is apparantly not sponsering drift anymore so you mightnt see him at future events anyway.

Car still runs and drives. Putting it all into a new T18 shell for more skids. Not to mention I have enough spares to pratically build another of these anyway.

Rules have always been no talking about streeting on here.

I am currently re-writing the rules to be a bit clearer about this.

I don't care if its a statement or otherwise, it is not allowed on here.
