The 2JZ is an absolute animal.... Really an amazing motor.... Currently making 336rwkw...
It will tow a car on a trailer (2100kg) at pretty much whatever speed you want, even up hills. It doesnt slow down at hills, it just keeps powering along.

Anyway, this car will travel alot, and this thread will be more of a scrapbook with pics from it's journeys around Australia.....

It might bore some people, but it might interest a few, so here she is.....

I like. How do your coilovers go with towing a car? The rear end squat much?

maxhag
4th February 2013, 10:39 AM
No rear squat at all.......

The coilovers are not bad, but I will be looking at getting some stiffer and more adjustable ones next....
I believe TEIN Supertreets are a basic street coilover....

Looks good! I was thinking of getting a celsior to use as a tow car.
But this should go well and serve more than just a tow car, haha.

4th February 2013, 01:55 PM
what effect (if any) does the converter have when you have a car on the trailer?

maxhag
4th February 2013, 05:18 PM
^^^LOL bahahahaha

Stalling up with a trailer on the back is a retarded idea.... I would never do that...... It would prob rip the whole back off the chassis.... lol

slide86
4th February 2013, 06:09 PM
no no. thats not what i meant at all........

i was speaking more of taking off under load......do you notice more of a stall effect during towing?

Yeah, I gathered you must have meant somethnig else... It still gave me the funny image in my head of someone stalling up and launching with a car and trailer on the back..... lol

I cant say i noticed any differance between towing or not........

The towing performance of this motor needs to be experiencd to believe.....

Had a little drive of this the other day ,the pick up for such a big car is amazing (2jz) awesomenes . Idrove 1jz soarer at local hill climbs a few years ago and the aristo is twice as quick (hint hint #¥€£$ )

Sweet, You know how many Kg/mm your springs are? Also How do the brakes handle it?

maxhag
5th February 2013, 12:25 PM
The brakes have been upgraded to the 4 pots and bigger rotor. The brakes are amazing.... Pulls up quickly while towing no troubles with ZERO brake fade....

I actually dont know the spring rates yet...... Not really stiff tho, but much stiffer than factory of course... They are only TEIN Superstreets......

Sounds awesome, the only thing that worries me is I have heard a few times of towing with some vehicles like this is stretching the chassis with excess load causing read door jams etc to have bigger gaps

Yeah, I have heard this too, but never seen proof... But with just a bit of care and common sense when towing, it should be ok..... The way they have mounted the tow bar uses thick steel plates and chunky bolts....

From the difference in fuel consumption on the way there and back I'm not even sure the aristow knew the Zed had jumped on!

maxhag
8th February 2013, 02:44 PM
I would say the rig was quite aerodynamic... I have read that the Aristo was the #1 most aerodynamic 4 door sedan built by any manufacturer in the decade of the 90's. To add to that, looking in the rear vision mirror, the zed was at perfect height for the wind deflecting off the Aristo, and the zed is quite aerodynamic in itself. Almost an Aerofoil really........
I pretty much had a Nissan Zed32 as a wing..... lol..... Nice bit of downforce right at the back ;)

Not to mention, the car isnt even under boost while towing.... At LARGE hills, it would boost no more than 6psi and under 3000rpm

Here is a solution to the blown turbo....

Happen to stumble across a Garrett HKS T04-R (aka T67)......... I got one of the better stainless manifolds too (3.2mm).
The turbo has zero shaft play, and seems in great condition. Has done less than 10,000kms.... Front housing is .70 and the rear is a .96..... From reading about them, they are supposed to spool up quicker, compared to other turbos its size... Anyway, there is only one way to find out....

The car will be running a low boost, low power tune. I cant afford to upgrade the fuel system yet. The car has an Apexi Neo only to do the tuning....
But honestly, iam not not wanting big power. The cars main task is to be able to tow well. 500hp is not needed for towing.
Why this turbo then you ask? The price was right, it was local from a trustworthy guy/workshop, and I am pretty desparate just to get the car drivng again, as I've got stuff to tow! :P

Just turn the boost up , that thing is huuuge

maxhag
16th April 2013, 05:58 PM
From reading a forum thread, the is a guy who has done the exact same conversion, only differance was he had a HKS piggyback....
On the stock fuel system, the most they could tune it to was 1.2bar......
Still made 299kw and had full boost by 4000rpm......

nice car man. just I quick question, would you mind telling me what the fuel consumption is like? i'm considering getting one for a tow car.

Towing a Nissan 300zx from Richmond NSW to Canberra ACT, used 3/4 of a tank, and that is driving at 130kph

Costs about $120 to fill tho...

If you are going to tow with it, you HAVE to get a custom towbar setup fitted, to suit the chassis........
Even with my custom setup, towing is strongly recomended to keep it under 2 tonnes

UPDATE:

Well, due to so many cars I am building right now, the Aristo has undriven for about 6 months.

I started working on the turbo conversion this week.

I decided to just do the Aristo properley the first time, and I am upgrading the fuel system now as well...

For the fuel system, I have bought brand new SARD 650cc injectors from Japan, a Walbro 255l/ph intank pump, new fuel filter (absolute #### to change), and a new Toyota fuel reg....

I also bought a new TIAL 44mm external wastegate ;)

Removing the intake piping and twin turbo setup was quite time consuming and took patience, and the right tools. Was a great moment when they came out! hahaha. There is actually a fair bit of engine bay free there now.
You need to block off some water and oil lines off the block, which I've done with Speedflow fittings/caps etc. I have braided line and Speedflow fittings to feed the turbo.

Removing the fuel rail, with the manifold still on etc, was also not an easy task, but was possible.. Much more fiddley than removing the twins, having to remove heaps of shit, old brittle loom clips breaking :( , and sliding the rail out the front etc.... Out came the stock 440cc injectors and in went the new SARD 650cc yellows. Putting back together was frustrating, I dropped a injector grommit (twice!) and they didn't hit the ground :( I wasted about an hour looking for the damn things, where you simply cannot see what the fuck your doing :P

Fuel rail etc is all done now.

Should have it done by the end of the week. I will still need some exhaust work done before I will be able to drive it or get a tune....

I wanted to brighten up the motor. I already had the cam covers done in black, and I still needed to do the top valley cover, and this is how I went.....
I have smoothed the cover, by, removing the lettering "3000 Two Way Turbo" and the Toyota badge.

All that is left now is to get a dump pipe made up and fit up a Turbosmart (Vee port) BOV to the intake piping.

All the conversion is now done. :D
I still have a few more things to get (eg fluids, few specific hoses etc) before I can think about trying to start it up. Money is tight at the moment, and with all the other cars, things have slowed right down in the spending department :(

Ok, so after getting the other T04R turbo up and running, it fucked out in less than a week, the joys of buying second hand turbos....... Anyway, I have bought a brand new Borgwarner SX300 60mm turbo..... A much better turbo for my application (towing/occasional daily).

I fitted it all up, and really didn't need to mod much at all to fit it. They are pretty much the same dimensions as a T04R or Z..... I really just had to weld a different V band flange to the dump pipe.....

Anyway, I am very happy with the results. Boost comes on much earlier, starts making boost from 2200rpm now, and full boost by 3500rpm.....

We put it on the dyno yesterday and got good results.....

Here is a video of the dyno..... At the end of the video on the power graph, it is a overlap/comparison with the old T04R turbo. The old tune is the FURTHEST RIGHT (the one making less power etc)

e86igu4YUiI

Here is the final tune.

http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/1/1/1/540158.jpg (http://s150.photobucket.com/user/maxhag/media/Aristo/20140824_1603352_zps27c3f62e.jpg.html)

Not a bad power curve at all, and holds 20psi extremely well...

Should have no troubles towing my AE86 track car ;)
