Sup Folks!

Firstly, I'd like to explain who I am and what I do.

Michael is the name, 24, studying Mechanical Engineering. I've been a Rota Head for the last 12 years (half my life) and for the last 7 years I've had head aches with the Mazda. Constantly changing things, upgrading, shit always breaks, engines are fucked. Currently Im ripping the engine out again, rebuild after a dodgey water seal, cleaning up the engine bay, going over the gearbox for the third time.. The car (Rx7 s3) has a 12at with a huge Mild Port, Microtech Lt10s, Gt37r Turbs with all the goodies and will be good for a solid 500 rwhp, the frustration of typing this is enough... So I'll stop.

For the last 4 years I have been buying Corona's for daily's. The first 3 were Auto, the 4th one was a 2.0L with Koni adjustables, ma61 brakes and struts, Jz10/11 soarer rims 15x6-20, locker, rebuilt engine, dodgey exhaust, repco bonnet scoop and a weber. It was a great car, perfect for small sections, anything under 70km/h in the wet no problem i.e hand brake entrys, transitions etc, though after 80km/h the car had no power and I couldnt skid. The car was limiting my driving, I had to clutch the thing 3 times in long sweepers in the Natio.

A 22re Corona on Gumtree came up for sale for a good price, I went and test drove it, inspected it and fell in love. 2 days later I went and picked it up. On the way home the car started smoking. Long story short these Indian ####s sold me an engine with 4 shot piston rings (I haven't forgotten about these ####s :yeah:).

I sourced a rebuilt engine off gumtree for $1250 with a w55, sold the w55 for $450 and had myself a motor for $800. I installed it with a good friend of mine who happens to be a specialist in Porsches. All was good for 3 weeks and then nothing.

3 months later the council stickered it and I had to move it, so I got down to investigating.. No spark at leads, dizzy, coil, ignitor.. You guesses it - Broken Timing chain.

Due to Studies I gave the car to a good friend/Mechanic Ali who also has a 22re turbo corona, he knows his shit. $3750 later on a full rebuild, braided lines, reco radiator, new t25/28 and other random shit the car was ready.

I have been driving the car now for the last 2 months and I havent had a problem. The car doesnt leak and oil, though recently I have discovered that the reco radiator is leaking slighlty from the top, It leaks about 50/60ml per week max I'd say. I'll be getting that looked at this week. The car drives so smoothly, power steering is great, air con, Stereo etc Im loving it, She doesn't miss a beat.

The plans for the car are to make it as reliable as possible before Getting her Drift ready (I actually went to the Natio last night with 2 mates to teach them how to drive, I lead. It started raining on the way back and I stepped on it in 2nd up a left turn and the dirty single legging bitch came out fucking well - Its been over a year since I've drifted properly.. My mate applauded me after the run was over at the lights exiting at Sutho).

On the cards next are:

Install my Megasquirt ECU - I cant get the fucker to work/communicate with my PC, it could be a cable connect. Iv'e made the loom to plug into the existing loom, just have to run 3 or 4 wires - 02, knock, Ig and something else.
Ma61 brake upgrade
Bilstein Adjustable shocks - I have s13 coil overs installed atm - The bilsteins should cost about $800 quoted from heasmans installed.
Rewire the dodgey speaker/amp wiring from front to back - Battery has been moved to the boot.
3 inch from cat back - Still running standard half way back from where the fucking cat use to be...
Re gas the A/C
New bits of trim around the sides, rear bar and new front bar, and chrome window trim - most of which has been done now. I want to get it looking orig like my old st141. - the pics of the car have no side trim - the car now has side trim.
Drift wheel like a nice momo
Hydraulic Hand brake
Hilux diff - Iv'e read a Vl turbo diff centre/r31 skyline centre which is the bw78 is a straight bolt in.. I spoke to the man of Diffs Con at Diff Technics and he told me this was full of shit haha half the people on these sites don't know what they're on about.. Can anyone prove him wrong?
Eventually a respray but not for a couple of years, its a Rona seriously who gives a fuck!
SR wing - who has one that I can buy??????
Re badge it
A good system

I'm just syked to be driving a car I enjoy, opposed to having a car That I love/hate that hasn't been on the road for 3 years. The Amount I've spent on my Mazda is Stupid, Toyota's are Church change compared to rotaries... I just wish I was into drifting before Rotaries.. I feel like I've got this mad car that I can't slide, In a sense I've almost lost interest. A 500rwhp car is undrivable in the natio, Unpractical on the street, But they are scary as shit to drive :hehe:

My drifting bug is too strong, I can't wait to start building race cars in the future.

Anyway enough about my sitch, here are some pics of my car. The first pic is the Old st141 with the 2l, the rest are of the rt142.

Enjoy

Michael

The Old st141, pretty tidy besides the bonnet

That's pretty neat 22r install!

Try an find some ma61 wheels for a bit more offset?

troublesome_7
31st March 2013, 02:24 PM
The stock computer/ecu combo is alright. Nothing special, just for a bit of boost and flutter, goes extremely well on hi way driving. The motor is stock. It will boost up to 11 psi on a good day, and it fkn pulls man. I have to get the megasquirt in there asap, So I dont have to feather it onto boost.

Stock motors are good for 14psi or so, same with the t25/28 turbo's.

When its tuned I dont want to go over 10/11psi.

The wheels are 15x6 +20. Ma61's are 14x7 +-0 from memory. A set came with the car but I sold them, the 15's look much better. I have a set of 15x7 +15 simmons that might make their way onto it, just depends when the rest of the stuff is ready to get tail happy

Have u changed the fuel pump or is it just stock.

troublesome_7
1st April 2013, 01:20 PM
Fuel pump is stock.

I have a spare bosch 910 for it when The aftermarket ECU goes in. Injectors are refurbished/back to new specs flow tested at 200cc/min.

I could possibly find a 22re-T ECU for it but what for? Ill get it tuned maximum for what it is

On a quick note, Got fined $500 for expired licence, fucking dogs!

What turbo are you running? What turbo's do the standard 22re-t's come with?

Lceperformance have a lot of stuff.

Also has anyone done throttle body upgrades? I've heard an EL falcon will fit with slight modification..

Assailant

I'll take the rear wing pm sent.

Also on a side note, they have those aluminium window shields to suit ke70's on rollaclub, does anyone know if they will fit the rona?

Wagon86

Ive got a ct 20 Toyota turbo. Which is the same that the 22ret came out with. Its pretty small turbo would probs be in full boost at 2000rpm and then die at 5 which is perfect

It should be the goods man! It will make a good cruiser with a bit of pull :)

Also has anyone done a ra60 T series diff swap?

I have heard a 5mge throttle body upgrade are bolt on for throttle bodies, but can't confirm....

How much are those window shades going for? I've been trying to find a set myself... and I'm pretty suyre they would fit... I'd grab them since they are so rare to find... and I would go to the trouble of making them fit... lol

troublesome_7

I have also looked at the 5mge out of the cressida's.. same as Ma61. There are the 4age throttle body, which look similar also.. Will get a 5mge from the wreckers and see how she goes ;) Its also D type pin for TPS ;)

Those window shades are going for about $300 a set or there abouts, they look the part. These aren't factory, just some cool exterior add ons lol.

I will post up photos of the car tomorrow, a few things have changed.

It is now running on a megasquirt, has Lc1 wideband fuel only atm, will sort ignition out later after installing the TPS and removing the AFM for a bung in type air sensor.

It should see roughly 150rwkw at 6psi ;)

Yeah coronas are a good thing but cant agree about mazda crap. They do have some ordinary things but also have brilliantly engineered items to. I love my rotors and have no dramas. Use the right oil and fuel and quality items with a good builder and all is well. Should be a weapon when finished. Good to see progress as it comes together.

Cheers Matey!

Checked your thread out just before, wicked ride. PP's are phat. can't beat a good n/a motor especially a rotor ;)

Hows the 12at coming along?

Yeah cheers. Still wish i had it. Someone in new zealand saw it on the dyno in another car and bought it n took it back with him. Turbomotor good but no whistler yet due to manifold drama. High reving engines always sounds good weather chooka or not but a good whistle is always impressive. Keep the pics rolling in of your beast.

Speed camera shots ^^

Got a ra40 T series, looking for a zenki center now.

Getting some 14x7's and 14x9jj for drifting, I'll keep the 15's for cruising as they look better, when I get some cash I'll get some 15's in desired width and offset. 14's will be lighter on the wallet, you can get tires for nothing opposed to 15's. Tires are bit big in the pics, they have 245's on a 7' and 275's on a 9', will be putting 215/225 r50's and stretching the mofo's. The rear guard is on the tire in the pics. The eagers did look cool though :))

2 months til I get my licence back, looking for some s13 bilstein or koni inserts, otherwise will trade my s13 coilover non dampening adjustable, but height adj with 8kg springs for an ae86 dampening adjustable coil over.

Quick update:

Front bar has been taken off, doing some minor repairs and will be respraying and refitting it.

Items purchased: Ra60 T series LSD center Booya! 15x7 + 11 Longchamps :D

Items fitted: S13 G4 coil overs with dampening adjustable, upgraded from just height adjustable coils. Not sure what I will be doing with the rest of the car, but full bush treatment, new rear shocks + springs, then all aftermarket links from Techno Toy tuning etc.

Not sure on the Diff ratio's, but ideally will be needing 3.89 - 3.91 what ever they come in.

Things to do:

Replace head gasket

Wheel alignment

Rego

Ignition tune

Hydro handbrake

Fit diff

Sideways

FTP! Keep shit safe and hopefully hit the track some time in the new year.

Will keep you all updated.

Update!

LSD is 43/11 3.909 final drive booya!

Forgot that I purchased the ra60 tail shaft to suit.

Bought a set of 15' V4 Simmons also for all the haters, will look rad once painted and widened.

Will start working on the car in a couple of weeks, have to focus on studies in the meantime.

Will keep you updated as I go.

Will possibly be selling the jz soarer wheels also if anyone is interested.

Michael

So

Simmons are sold, another pair of long champs have been purchased. Now both pairs will be getting the treatment and getting widened to 8 - 8.5jj low negs.

T series conversion done, all bolted up. Utilised standard 142 brakes and bolted straight up, using a ra60 manual tail shaft. New wheel bearings. Will be doing ma61 fronts next and slotted/drilled rotors front and rear (ebay specials). Also Hydro at the same time.

Next on the agenda is to rebuild the head gasket, will get it completed by end of next week.

All that is left will be tyres, rims and the brakes. After that, its engineers and goodies.

Head gasket done!

Engine is leaking oil from front main seal, so will be ordering LCE performance leightweight pulleys, 2 stage thermostat, and lightened and improved clutch fan along with the $10 front main seal lol.

Rebuilding A/C pump, so have ordered new belts and bearings to go.

My diff makes a clunking sound, so a new set of ratio's are in order, will have to take the center to Diff Technics to fit, visually inspect also, see how the shims are etc.

After that, fit the ma61 brakes with new wheel bearings, Hyrdo handbrake with lines, service, tyres and wheel alignment.

At some point I have to take the coil over back to the engineer as its binded up somehow lol. Also, would like to re run a new battery cable to the boot, as the previous owner used 10Ga amp power wire.

After this, will register and take to get ignition timing done and a more refined tune. Then a custom airbox and a few minor things before its ready for the engineer.

After that, I've got a full respray planned, fit a new TMIC with new piping, alloy radiator, do some custom shit to the intake with a new THB off something cheap, make some rear trailing arms and upper arms, gotta deck out the suspension, widen the Longchamps, tyres, better discs, then maybe some more boost and a fuel setup..

Keep things updated as things proceed.

Cheers

Cheers matey

Had to figure out where a clunking/knocking/rotational sound was coming from, thought it was the tail shaft bottoming out on the tunnel. Turns out I believe it's a slight nick on the pinion gear, kinda knew this before install, though thought would of been alright. Possibly might be able to grind/sand smooth, though won't take the chance. Looking for a center with 3.91's otherwise its $500 to my good friend Con (lol) from Diff Technics.

Bought the SR wing.

Removed front guards, cleaned up, prepped and sprayed, same with front of car, air condenser etc. Bought and fitted new front lights and Indicators.

Have bought a new pair of front guards, along with the bonnet and boot lid SR which are all getting the prep work done.

Things on order:
Ac Belt
Ac Bearing - Rebuilding AC compressor
Hydro
Ma61 front wheel bearings
Turbo beanie
4 Inch holesaw
4 Inch Silicon (for CAI for TMIC)
Front main oil seal

Need to get:
All fluids + sparkies (car runs but might as well)
Tyres - $250 set for cheapies
Hose clamps - meh
Brakes lines for Hydro

Things needed to be done:
Remove diff center and repair
Remove front coil over - Binded up - simple fix
Fit hydro
Fit ma61's
Fix front main oil seal leak
Remount Ac
Possibly digital oil pressure gauge
Re wire battery cable front to back
Make CAI for TMIC and section off TMIC
Full service

At this stage, the car should be sway. Will just need a wheel alignment and then its rego.

1st thing once rego'd, will be to go get the ignition timing done, remove AFM, install new sensor AFM, custom pod box, refined tune (now running 11.0 AFR on +100% fuel load so its a very safe tune atm) should be good for 150rwkw sub 10psi.

After this, engineer and drive.

Will have some time then to get the car resprayed, and then the rest of the shit tricked out like

Suspension :DD
Solid mounted bushes for diff with adjustable links
Front bushes
Sway bars
Rear shockies + springs (or coil over/type)
Power steering arms
New LCA's xt130
Not sure about hubs
Slotted and vented discs (easily just replace with solid old ones)
And do something with the wheels - 15x8.5 all round most likely

It will be a random next couple of months, just can't wait to drive and appreciate the car on the road. It should be well setup, as well as a daily
