Always meant to take some good photos of my ride, finally got around to doing it.

I present to you, the cleanest AE71 I've ever seen.
1983 CS-X model, if you're thinking it looks familiar it was originally owned and built by DC's very own Golberg / Lawrence to those in the know.
To say this was built by someone who's pedantic to fit and finish would be a gross understatement! <3

Recent respray in original OEM red.
120,000ish~ k's on the body only! I think.
Tried and true 16V JDM RWD bigport built by RS Yasu of Japan.
Originally an auto, converted to T-50 manual with a short shifter + Exedy racing clutch.
T-series disc diff, 86 front suspension, original set of SSR's with RE001's on the front.
Sneaky vintage Recaro's and AE93 steering wheel the 5-0 never look twice at.
+ much more I CBF'd listing. :)

Posted up a few more on my menswear label's Facebook page as well: www.facebook.com/skinnybrunette

Enjoy!

Alex.

Sorry guys, I'm shit with DC!

Thanks for the love!
Yeah, she's real pretty. :)

Specs on the engine, for those that asked.
Handbuilt in Japan by RS Yasu (hence the cam covers).
Those that know, know they're actually supposed to be hammer-finish green.
But christmas tree vibes wouldn't have been the way to go!
When we were replacing the sump gasket recently-ish, we inspected the underside of the pistons, and we believe that it may have been bored out to 1.8L, and running CA18 pistons.
We haven't confirmed this officially, but it would make sense, as that's RS Yasu's specialty.
So, running this on standard management might be seriously under-utilising it's capabilities!
One day I'll look into it.

Haha, the seats are one of my favourite things.
Most people, even car people, don't notice that they're Recaro's until they're in them, they blend into the 80's-ness so well.

Haha, I drive her every day!
I couldn't keep her in a garage and never drive it, that's not my style.
At the end of the day, it's a car. It's a Corolla. It's not a Ferarri.
Plus, you hardly see these cars in mint condish on the road anymore.
I hate cars with no character, no personality.
The kids don't get a chance to see sweet old JDM flavour terrorising the roads enough in my opinion!

Wish I could ditch the P's, but unfortunately the plate ruining the aesthetics isn't a valid enough reason for the 5-0, go figure!

In other news, I've spoken to Lawrence, the previous owner.
He tells me when he gets a chance, he'll post up some photos of the build + photos of it when he originally took possession of it.

I'm glad to see everyone appreciates all the effort that went into this car.

As Alex has mentioned, and I appreciate his acknowledgement I was the one responsible for building this car from the ground up.

I bought it back in August 2008 as a salvage vehicle, it'd been in a minor front end accident.

You'd never know it was damaged

The damage. Shame really, but I guess if it wasn't damaged then it'd still be owned by its elderly owners.

So when I got it, its specs were as follows:
1983 Toyota Corolla AE71 CS-X
3spd Auto
102,000km's

It had been exceptionally well looked after. When I got it, it even had a newspaper from 1988 in the boot (yes, that's 20 years of sitting in a boot). The boot looked like it hadn't been used in those 20 years either.

Firstly stripped out the dash to remove the auto pedal box ready to put in the manual one:

And then went the 4AC along with its auto gearbox:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/508573.jpg

I got the power steering setup in and the lines are all mounted for it:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/508574.jpg

Also got a JDM AE86 fuel line, which conveniently was in the Toyota warehouse in Melbourne. That a long with a whole host of new gaskets:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/508575.jpg

Built front AE86 struts with new KYB SW20 shocks an Lovell's Super low springs. JDM AE86 brakes also

I also made up this plate to do a better job of the shifter hole:

Starting to look a bit more complete here (Dec 2008):
I had earlier acquired an excellent condition set of SSR Meshies
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/508580.jpg

Along came an AE86 from Japan which kindly donated its engine:

So another year passed, loved every minute of driving the car and had very few issues.

Unfortunately over that year 2nd gear syncro was starting to play up a little.

So I rebuilt a spare gearbox ready to go in:

My workspace all laid out ready, note second gearbox has a smashed second gear and was used as a very useful point of reference.

Meanwhile, I acquired a disc rear end T-series from a JDM AE86.

Then went on to rebuild the callipers:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/508600.jpg

Got the diff and rebuilt gearbox in during July 2011.

I learnt along the way that AE86 handbrake cables don't fit an AE71, had a nightmarish time getting cables done. Several return trips to the brake place, missing bolts from calipers, holes in my floor, finally got out of there with a semi-decent job and will never go back.

From there I drove the car for another year.

Then the unthinkable happened (September 2011):
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/508601.jpg

I was just casually sitting at red lights with a space either side of me when a guy from Thailand on an international drivers licence slammed into the back of me. No insurance of course.

Luckily I was insured, and I didn't pay a cent to fix it (Shannons = Awesome).

As you can see, the damage wasn't bad, but it put a crease in the RH quarter panel and munched the rear bar.

Seeing as the rear was going to be repainted, it seemed stupid not to do the rest of the car. So I paid extra and had all the dents in the car fixed and the entire outside resprayed in the same factory red, but in 2 pack with extra gloss. I also had the tiny amount of rust that had just started cut out and repaired.

I stripped the car myself for the most part so that it'd be painted properly not just everything masked up:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/508602.jpg

A photo at the panel beaters, windscreen was also replaced and the rear screen popped out for the spray:

The car was all complete for December 2011.

I didn't actually take any photos when it was done.

2012 rolled in and a stark realisation hit me. My project car was finished! I had completed everything I had ever desired to do with the car. This concept of finishing had never been a thought to me before then.

To be honest it wasn't what I wanted to realise, I concluded from that there was only 1 more thing the car would do from then on. Deteriorate with age, a very pessimistic opinion I know, but it was true.

I just happened to be chatting with Alex about my realisation at the time, but nothing came of it at that point.

Fast forward a month, and Alex calls me asking, do I want to sell the car. At this point I was unsure but after much deliberation myself I decided it was time to move on.

I moved up to something faster, quieter and more comfortable. A JZX110 Mark II:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/8/0/508604.jpg

These are the final shots before I exchanged ownership with Alex:

Notice the lack of stickers or P plates which everyone is having a go at Alex for :P

No, a credit to Alex, he's basically kept it exactly as I always envisioned. So for that I'm very pleased.

Engine specs are still somewhat a mystery.

What we do know is as follows:
It was built by RS-YASU in Japan
Engine came with a modified ECU which rev limits at 8500, the engine makes power up to 7500.
It has an RS-YASU forged crank in it.
TVIS is deleted
More than likely it is overbored running CA18 pistons (specialty of RS-YASU) which brings it out to about 1.7L
Has factory cams in it.

If anybody is interested, I still have and am working on my other project AE71 which I owned for much of the time I had this car. Its a totally different build though, the body is rubbish but the driveline is far superior. In spite of the condition of the body, I'm just as meticulous with it. See my build thread:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/forums/showthread.php/9588-Golberg-s-AE71-4A-GZE-Skid-Bucket

If you like my work, I have a sponsor section (Just click the link in my sig) where I advertise different things. I've just started a new business called QuickTech. Through that I'll be offering various automotive electrical and mechanical services. Website will be up soon.
