Picked up an 82 celica coupe

Just when I was looking for a new daily and a fresh project to start after getting defected in the mira,I came across this!
one family owned, original everything(even the tape deck)!

(sorry marvis...I do hate being a copy cat but it was a super clean car at a price I couldn't look past!)

Like I said,it's stock as a rock, factory electric sunroof,21r-c,5 speed manual and live axle T series rear end, with absolutly no mods to list as yet...but that should change once I do the road worthy and get it registered.
doesn't look to need much for rwc tho....will need a windscrean,an oil leak at the timing cover,a slight exhaust leak and a few minor rust repairs done but nothing too dramatic!

Basic plan is: More Low,super dope rims, decent exhaust and a welded diff centre(until I get a proper lsd)
that should make it a good daily driver/wet weather slider for the time being.....I'd like to get more power eventually though and I do have an rt142 corona for parts, but I'm still not sure if I wanna do the 22re conversion yet...Doesn't seem worthy for such little gains, and I know how much of a prick it is to do from doing my old corona....even though it's not quite as involved as that was....still a lot of work for fuck all!

I'll Possibly do an engine conversion down the track...I was discussing the Beams option with Sam Q last night, but for now ill keep it fairly mild.
I read somewhere you can put the 21r head on the 22r block for a higher comp 2.4ltr engine, which would keep it carb and eliminate the need for swapping the loom/ecu etc. wondering what power that setup would make with a sidedraft and extractors? if anyones got any insight on that mod?

Hope you all enjoy the thread as it progresses!

Cool cars! Shame RA65 coupes are hard to find. IRS would be good.

I have headlights and tail lights plus bits of black interior for one of these if you ever need.

At least it's a T series diff and not a bog warmer,haha!
and do you mean you've got the lights from an ra60 or 65?
I don't like the ra60 lights very much at all.....I'd be keen on the headlights if they're ra65,and are interchangeable with ra60?
But otherwise everything's in really good nick besides a small crack in the centre console, but cheers for letting me know anyway guys!
I could always find something down the track I havn't noticed yet ,so ill keep ya's in mind!

Didn't actually know that. Nice one then!
Um I know I've got RA60 headlights but I may have some 65s too. Would need an RA65 bonnet though (see how the 60s' curves above the llights) Otherwise yeah with a bit of muscle they fit in fine from memory.

KurtHS I may have an auto surrond but thats it sorry.

RA60 has a different bonnet, grill, indicators, bumper and lip, but you may be able to swap just the headlights. It just might not look/line up right, worth a try

sweet!
I'll see if I can find one at the wreckers with a complete front....I'd prefer to change it all over if I do!
I thought it probably would fit,but good to actually know for sure!
the ra65's have a nicer looking bumper/grill anyway.

changed a few things over from the mira yesterday....gear shifter,s/wheel etc.
might do the stereo today if I can be bothered,i'll take some more pics later anyway

The 21r head will fit on the early 22r s 80-85. After 85 they changed the design. So if its coming from a rt142 it would be 85 or later engine and it wont work. But if u get a 22r from a 80s hilux it might work. But ull be 500 $ outta pocket to get one

Best thing to do here would be beams. ST141 Corona cross member would fit. SA63 bell housing attached to w57 and you are on.

I have ra65 headlights here I would do cheap with post if you're interested. Always wrecking them.

ahh ok,well fuck that then.....I've got the 22re,which is heaps cleaner than the 21r-c in it,do you know if it's possible to swap out the injection parts with the carbi manifold etc?
I could put the injected engine in,i've done it before....but I cbf swapping out fuel lines, tank etc...and im not sure if the brake master cyl an lines would need changing either?
If I could just drop the 2.4ltr in and change it over to carbi it would save a lot of work!
slap a weber on it,do the exhaust and be content with it until I acquire all the parts for a real conversion!
I'm keen to do something in the meantime so it's not as slow, but I don't wanna get to involved with it,if you know what I mean.
I was sussing out prices for a weber kit, extractors and a cam.....I could throw about a grand at the R series motor to tie me over until I do it properly.
I found a place that says they've got a cam for 20r,21r,22r & 22re engnies that get's them reving out to 7500rpm or so without any head work, apparently you only need double valve springs, and it uses the stock rocker arms etc....I wouldn't mind trying one out, cost just under 400beans for the cam and valve springs!

Since the stock exhaust was toast,I replaced it with a 2 1/4" system with a lukey sports muffler.....and put a chrome tip on it that I found laying around the shop, sounds alright but I'm on the lookout for a cheap second hand set of extractors for 22re(if there's any difference?)

I've decided I am going to swap the 22re I have here after all....noticed a lot of oil on the 21r,but thought it was weird it didn't have any visible leaks? Then realized it didn't have any oil in it,lol.....so I filled it up,and then came the spots! or patches in this case! :S
I can safely say she's fucked and not worth fixing!

Not sure If I'll go all the way with the fuel injection or source the parts needed to change it to carbi.....either way,its a temp motor to get me through until I have some more funds to do something worthwhile!

I'll try to get some pics as it comes along

I have ra65 headlights here I would do cheap with post if you're interested. Always wrecking them.

I've Been thinking about this....just wondering why I'd need to use the W57 box & sa63 bell housing etc? I mean.....why couldn't I just use the std 6 speed box behind the beams? is it simply because of the shifter location or is there something else I'm missing?
I'd obviously need to fabricate a gearbox cross member and have a custom tailshaft made....and no doubt re wire plugs for reverse lights etc on the gearbox.......but is there a reason I can't do it that way? would the shifter come out somewhere in the back seat floor or something that's just not practical? lol......Just curious, cos I mean.....6 gears is gotta be better than 5 right?
and when I first started modding cars years ago I played around with a few datsuns.....and we had to cut new holes in the floors of 1600's and stanza's and make up crazy banana shaped cross members to run the stronger 240k gearbox's.....I kind of assumed it would be the same deal with this and far from impossible?

school me! haha

Anyway,I've been fixing the car up slowly over the past few weeks...removed the rusty mudflaps and the trims along the sills then painted bellow the doors black so it makes a clean line right through from the guards to the q/panels.....looks a lot better!
Also had a bit of rust I had to get rid of and clean up but its turned out pretty good.
otherwise no really exciting news sorry.....it's still stock as fuck atm, cleaned up the old 21r-c tho,and fixed an oil leak from the crank seal....only to find it was also leaking from the oil pump gasket,*Face palm*

been having second thought on not dropping the 22re in it tho......it's just a heaps cleaner engine, but I'm not to keen on swapping out fuel lines n looms etc for the efi so I'm thinking about fitting a 22r manifold & carb then swapping the dizzys for vacuum advance.
obviously an elec fuel pump too since the 22re doesn't have the cam lobe for the mechanical pump...I'm pretty sure that's all there is to it tho?
It'll just be a thrash around donk for the time being while I source parts etc for a conversion.......might put a cam in it and tinker around with the head tho, possibly slap a weber on an some extractors.....nothing too serious, but it should get me by for now.
Anyway.....I'll try to snap some more pics today, looked at the few that I have n thought "hmmm, looks kinda shitty" hahaha

Until then

Josh

I think everyone just assumed that you were thinking of getting a beams without a gearbox so thats why people suggested the w57, also I believe the beams 6 speed gearboxs are expensive?? Also the shifter shouldnt sit that far back anyway
And im led to believe the sa63 gear will be an almost bolt in affair meaning that the gearbox and engine will be in the standard position, therefor meaning you wont need custom mounts, gearbox crossmember or even tailshaft I spose. Essentially taking a sa63, taking the 2sc out and replacing with a 3sge
This is just my understanding, maybe someone else can shed so light?

Joshie_Mcslide
5th August 2013, 04:54 PM
So far, finding a manual sa63's been unsuccessful....seen two auto's but yea,no luck as of yet.....anyway,turns out I've decided to whack the 22re from the corona in it for now.......minus the E in 22r/e tho.....I can't be fucked swapping over fuel tanks n lines and changing the engine loom etc just to run the efi, so I Picked up a complete 22r head with manifold, carbi & fuel pump etc for $100.
I'll be pulling the 22re out, swapping the head and dizzy etc. over the next few weeks to run the carbi setup.....chuck a weber n some extractors on it to squeeze out as much power as I can for the time being....Depending on weather the sale of my mira goes through or not,I may also get the cam I posted the link for & some double valve springs and so on...fit it all up in the same job.
I'm not expecting it to be a super fast race engine or anything but it should make a big improvement over the tired old 21r-c!
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/0/3/5/510825.jpg (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/Critical_Movement43/media/22rhead_zps6f13b006.jpg.html)
Had a bit of a sketch last night too.....because Fuck photoshop!
lowered the suspension, fitted some fat rims and added some spoilers n shit......come up alright.

So anyway.....that's pretty much it at this stage, sorry for my lack of pics....but yeah, nothing really worth getting pics of as it's still stock as....hence the drawing, hahaha
Peace out.

Is that the same 22r that is always in older hilux's? Because even putting a weber on them is a waste Of time. My mate had a hilux with a 22r. Slower than my stock 4k at the time

That's mostly because it was a hilux dude......and Toyota used them up until 92 or 94,the later ones are better.....It's exactly the same engine as a 22re in a corona or ra65 but with a carbi, and I'm not just putting a weber on it and expecting power...they need a cam and extractors too so they breath better.
It's an upgrade from what I have, and I've been forced to do it because the 21r-c in it now has a few terminal oil leaks and I can't get it passed RWC.....Like I said,I'm not expecting a big power upgrade, just a respectable and reliable heart beat to get me through.

Wagon86
6th August 2013, 11:30 AM
Good to see ur going through with the 22r. Should be a good little up grade. Im still tempted about that cam. Could be fun.
Should be an easy swap. Will the 21r bell housing bolt up to the 22r.?

Joshie_Mcslide
6th August 2013, 06:46 PM
Pretty sure the bell housings are the same...I think the only real difference between the 21r-c and a 22r is the bore size.
But if for some reason they did slightly change the gearbox bolt pattern,I have another W57 box in the parts corona anyway.

Good times ahead,I can't wait to finally get it on the road!
I had a guy look over it for me the other week....a pre inspection,inspection,lol....pointed out a few things that needed fixing/tidying up and I've pretty much got it sorted....once I drop the 22r in it should pass the road worthy without an issue!

I'll take some snaps when I start ripping into it......so until then!

Peace.

If you're pulling the head off the motor, replace the timing chain, guides, etc.

Also, for what it's worth, all 22Rs are pretty bland because the intake ports choke at 130CFM because of the swirl port design, so they make no power over 4-4.5k. Camshaft and exhaust upgrades help, but don't really fix the problem.

Here's a pretty picture that highlights what I'm talking about. :)

Joshie_Mcslide

I'm all over replacing the timing chain,I've done one before without taking the head off,but I know it's the Achilles heal of the 22r's and would definitly need to happen sooner or later anyway.
On the whole no power after 4500rpm thing......that's why I want to get that cam claiming a 1500-7600 rev range using a stock head.
I've abused a stock 22re before,so I'm well aware of there limitations......just the idea of 7600rpm from a 22r had me thinking "bullshit"
but at the same time I was pretty curious to test one out!
we'll see I guess.....

ill-minded
7th August 2013, 03:10 AM
I'd be wary of any cam that advertised being able to rev an engine about 2,000rpm past the factory rev limit. Even if it did let it breathe that much, I don't think the bottom end would be all too pleased, given the relatively long stroke.

By all means, test it, but I do think it sounds like marketing crap, haha.

Joshie_Mcslide
7th August 2013, 10:12 AM
Yes this is true......but realistically I'd be happy if it was good for 6000rpm,and I guess if I do destroy the bottom end in the process at least I'll know what needs to be upgraded next,lol....as annoying as that would be at the time!
I may even opt for one with slightly less impressive specs yet,try to avoid throwing a piston out the side of the block or whatever, lol!
The plan is still on the drawing board at this point tho.....I do wanna keep the car as a daily for a while yet,so reliability is one of the main contributing factors I'll be shooting for....secondly I'd like to at least say that I managed to squeezed more power out of a 22r than what a 22re has,if I can do that I'll be a happy man! :)

should be easy enough tho and anything it makes beyond that will be a bonus!

Ordered my weber, extractors and an adjustable panhard rod........I'll pull my finger out over the next few weeks, slap this 22r in and and get some rego!
I've got some 5kg springs for now until I find an s13 front setup......I have some more recent pics too after fixing some rust holes and painting the sills where the black strips used to be....looks pretty tidy now, just very stock which isn't really my style.

True,I was stoked they were in such good condition! It's had a respray somewhere along the line by a previous owner...there are a few pin dents and scratches an patches of clear flaking off in places but you can tell it was well looked after through the years, just not by someone who was mechanically literate at all,lol....the body and interior are great, just the engines been run into, and through the ground!

quick question.....first head I've ever done, and the one head bolt that's still in the block in the pics stripped as I was giving them all a last turn to make sure......I should be safe to just take that bolt out to replace it without causing any drama's yea?
or because it was already torqued to the correct specs before it stripped should I just leave it and hope for the best?

some various shots throughout the conversion....I ended up having to pull the head off again, drilling out that one head bolt I mentioned and installing a hallicoil before refitting....wasn't too hard tho!
I've also got a bad habit of snapping bolts......had to redrill and tap 2 holes in the back of the head for that plate/water gallery thing pictured.

Don't mind the piece of garden hose.....I ran out of money this week and forgot to buy hoses, hahaha!

She runs great tho now, easily on par with other 22re's ivé had if not better.....I did have an issue with a loud tapping noise in the front of the engine at first,I thought I'd damaged the chain guides but everything was intact......Ended up being the fan,I'd done it up finger tight and forgot to go back to it after the belt was adjusted.

rwc and rego now and then It's time to get low!
then once the rego's out of the way I can start saving for some wheels......looking at something less common than the norm...I.e... No meshies or longchamps etc....haha,maybe some Hayashi streets,or star sharks or something like that?

I wanted it to look as stock as possible

Wagon86

So she done rather well on the first inspection....only needed four things:
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/0/3/5/515840.jpg (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/Critical_Movement43/media/rwc_zpsdeef3d49.jpg.html)
Had to buy this redline adaptor the keep the rwc man happy......just keeps everything looking stock.
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/0/3/5/515841.jpg (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/Critical_Movement43/media/aircleaneradapt_zps53f436f2.jpg.html)
painted up the air cleaner and tidied everything up to the point I'm even getting coppers compliment the car when I'm pulled over and they're checking the numbers etc......it's happened 4 times now anyway, lol
here's a few finished snaps...
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/0/3/5/515842.jpg (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/Critical_Movement43/media/bay3_zps05e37194.jpg.html)

Not bad......

So anyway....I was just knocking the things off the list for rwc,the guy said the adjustable panhard was fine so that went in.
oil leaks were a bit of a piss take considering its a freshly sealed motor, but I gave it a squirt down anyway.
reverse light was as simple as it sounds, got one from the rony missile.....
Last on the list was the front brake lines......no problem I thought, get some brand newies made up at Enzed,$120 the pair.......So I install em right......get in the car,no brake peddle?
I thought,ahh yeah....just needs a bleed,so I go grab the Mrs to give me a hand.....she's pumpin,im turning,but shits just not happening?
I knew exactly what was up,but still denied it until I tried everything else....removed,inspected and cleaned the calipers....nothing!?

So basically, this is what i'm dealing with now
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/0/3/5/515845.jpg (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/Critical_Movement43/media/nomaster_zpsafa90da2.jpg.html)
missed the 2nd inspection because the master is in getting honed and re sealed...just waiting for a call some time this week and we're back in business!
It's shit they don't make that master cyl anymore tho,it's costing me between 250-350 to have reco'd.....prob could of found one second hand but couldn't be stuffed hunting!

Also....non Sally related(well a distant cousin anyway) I bought this thing.....

Still need to whack a cam in it tho....I'll probably opt for something a little less aggressive than my first pick now tho.

So because the master cyl decided to quit,I didn't make the 7 days for the 2nd inspection.....was due Monday, got there on Friday....four days later and this was the resalt of my 2nd,1st inspection........
http://www.ae86drivingclub.com.au/dcimages/3/0/3/5/516009.jpg (http://s1202.photobucket.com/user/Critical_Movement43/media/rwc2_zpse6ed06ca.jpg.html)
Yes,that right.....in 4 days I managed to rack up another 4 items......clearly these were over looked in the first place, and the leaking brake fluid made me hit to roof! $350 for a reco master cyl that leaks is a shit go if you ask me!
took it back to the brake joint..........turns out it was only the 10mm bolt with a copper washer in the side that was loose!
Anyway,it's all sorted now and rego is back on track for next pay day so she'll be down low and dirty before the end of the year!

LOL @ Daniel.......I actually upload all these pics to my facebook from my mobile, then save the image from there and upload to photobucket.........So it's not that I don't keep you in the loop it's just that the loops moved real slowly with this build and mostly during work hours, lol!
Cheers Marv.......the decals were one factor that sold me on this car when I bought it,I was tossing up between this and a metallic brown corona!
Obviously the T series diff and w series box > borg warner shit were other winning factors too

Joshie_Mcslide
24th November 2013, 01:32 PM
Also, just a side note......I mentioned earlier in this thread I wanted to do an ra65 front conversion,
but I've changed my mind since........I do still want to fit up an ra65 bumper(if they're actually different) and just the lower lip section from the 65 to improve the front profile of the car but retain the original style headlights/bonnet which have since grown on me.
I'm calling it an RA62.5 so I want to make it obvious that it's not a 65 but more than just a 60,if you know what I mean?

Those lights are the only uncool thing about the car bro. Please pretty please give them a go!

lol.....I think it's a mixture of the lights and the pointy front end they have, once i change to 65 front bar and lip it'll draw attention away from the ugly lights........plus,when they're up you can hardly tell the difference anyway.....you'll see!

Anyway....she's legit now, almost.........I'll book the rego later this week!

I'm actually thinking about fitting the 5kg springs now before i take it in to vic roads.......they wont know it wasn't like that during the inspection and i figured if i roll out of there nice and low with fresh plates on,the coppers will hopefully assume it was like that during the rwc inspections and leave me alone for a bit..........that's the theory anyway.
thoughts??

I know right......that bumper looked like a blunt spear head!.....pointy but blunt with no real shape about it,and with those lights....it was a face a mother had trouble loving!

I have to admit tho, after comparing the 2 up close and personal...the flowing lines across the front of the ra65's,clear smoke indicators....they do look good don't they, lol.
I wouldn't mind seeing if the 65 lights and indicators will fit in with the 60 bonnet and grill......if it does, and those lines work in with my grill...I'll probably get some, just a matter of finding a set to try on,lol
anyway....since it crack head hours on Christmas day I really should piss off to bed soon......just wrapped presents for the kids, sat down for a beverage and they got up and informed me that Santa's been here while I was in another room....the sneaky bastard!
So now im up telling them to go back to bed every 10 mins....and its getting old fast!

Nah they dont. RA65 lights are wider from memory and the little eyelids on the 60 bonnet wont fit them. Need an RA65 bonnet unless you pull a massive dodgy and hack it up.

My thoughts exactly. Straight lines. Its a bit of an avante garde looking chassis, needs some slightly kooky wheels to set it off.

I went with the white lineas as a rally throwback since my car is white anyhow, but your car would look amazing with Hoshinos or maybe some Enkei Apache or some equip 01/02.

Could also see some feroche if you can find a good size, or classic ssr mk 2s. I think the 4 spoke and slightly unusual style is definitely something that works on this body.

We'll see what happens Marv.....I'm thinking a mini spool for my next purchase now anyway! cheaper than a proper lsd but not as dodgy as welding it.....plus if I do ever get defected or need to pass a rwc again ill have my stock center to put back in.

Hooked it up with some yellow foggies today....got a $50 voucher for my birthday and walked around the store until I found something I could spend it on,lol!
almost bought rear speakers but it was too hot to hook up sound today...some pics

I was thinking about bending up a few steal brackets for the front lip, give the rubber some support so it doesn't wobble and maybe kick it out forward a bit so it isn't so flat?
see what happens in the next few weeks, got a little bit of cash from my birthday......prob blow a couple hundred on the spool, and what ever I have left will go aside until I got enough for some wheels.
I might even put a set of those played out 15x8" steelies I've been seeing everywhere....just as a temp set until I find the right set/pairs.
I'll paint them up silver so they're not generic black, maybe a metallic charcoal center?
set of 195/55's with thin, double lined red walls for shits n giggles!

Also found some Negative camber, rca's I might purchase....save fuckin around swapping out lca's....they bolt up off center using 4 bolts per side instead of two, gives you about 0.5-1" track and -1.5 camber or something like that.

Fog lights look right at home there

My thoughts exactly!
although I am going to move them up slightly by about 3-4mm.......the brackets don't quite fit flush to the bumper because of the metal plate/bracket thingo that the number plate bolts to........I think I'll just measure it up and cut it into 3 pieces so that each piece butts up nicely against each light bracket.
It'll be a subtle change, but just enough to minimize the gap so it tidys them up a little!

Still gotta wire them up yet too,lol.......the switch that came with the kit was the crapiest, ugliest piece of shit ive ever seen....so I'm gunna hook them up once I pick up a decent missile switch or something to use instead.
also, just while we're on the subject.....the instructions say to wire them up so they can only turn on with the high beams, but I wanna be able to turn them on with my parkers or low beams.....
Obviously there's legality issues for whatever reason....but I could turn the fog lights on in my old mark II with only the parkers running, and that was factory equipment!
If it's legal in that instance then why can't I wire up aftermarket lights the same way???
Think I'll get picked for it if I do,or do ya's think I'd probably get away with it?

currently building a roof wing/spoiler for it.........I've worked with fibreglass before but this is the first time ive attempted to construct something from scratch!
it's a bit wobbly atm and still needs some sanding and filling but i'll post some pics of the process when im closer to finishing!
If I had a choice to do it again I'd probably buy one for an ae86 notch back and widen it,even if they do cost 300+!
It's taken a few hours each day over a 5 days so far to get to the point I'm at which is close to finished but still a ways to go!
here's some pics of the first test once it took shape........day 1

Also a friendly police man informed me,while handing me a fine for failing to have full control of a vehicle(which is debatable, but I didn't loose any points and I was waring thongs so I just copped it on the chin) That tinted taillights are in fact illegal and need to be visably red.....which I was aware of to some degree but went ahead anyway....I like the look,so fuck it!
But I scored another pair of lights for $38.....my plan is to tint the clear lense between the globes and outer lense to hopefully achieve the same look while retaining the red colour on the outside of the lights......Not sure how it'll turn out but i'll have spare lenses so it's worth a try.

it's starting to look half decent.......just using a filler to even it all up and smooth it out!
